Introductory Topics to Lean Practitioner

An introduction of Lean including definitions, benefits, principles, and history

Gemba Walk (The Real Place)

The Gemba Walk is an opportunity for staff to stand back from their day-to-day tasks to walk the floor of their workplace to identify wasteful activities

Kaizen (Continuous Improvement)

Kaizen is a philosophy regarding the processes that continuously improve operations and involve all employees

KPIs (Key Performance Indicators)

KPIs refer to a set of quantifiable measurements used to gauge a company’s overall long-term performance

MUDA (Wastes) / MURA (Fluctuation) / MURI (Overburden)

The terms refer to the three categories of waste found in a business. While Muda is the non-value adding actions within your processes; Muri is to overburden or be unreasonable while Mura is uneven

5S

5S stands for the 5 steps of this methodology: Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize & Sustain

OEE

Overall equipment effectiveness is a measure of how well a manufacturing operation is utilized compared to its full potential, during the periods when it is scheduled to run

Continuous Flow

Continuous Flow is the act of moving a product through the production process from start to finish without stopping

Takt Time

Takt time is the maximum amount of time in which a product needs to be produced in order to satisfy customer demand

Value Stream Mapping

Value Stream Mapping for analyzing the current state and designing a future state for the series of events that take a product or service from the beginning of the specific process until it reaches the customer

Flow diagram (or swim-lanes diagram)

Flow Diagram is a process from start to finish, but it also divides these steps into categories to help distinguish which departments or employees are responsible for each set of actions

Spaghetti Diagram

Spaghetti Diagram is a method of viewing data to visualize possible flows through systems. Flows depicted in this man-ner appear like noodles, hence the coining of this term

Jidoka ensures that quality is automatically built into a production process

Andon

Andon is a tool that is used to inform and alarm workers of problems within their production process. It is an integral part of applying Jidoka in the workplace

Poka-Yoke (Error Proofing)

Poka-Yoke is the use of any automatic device or method that either makes it impossible for an error to occur or makes the error immediately obvious once it has occurred

Root Cause Analysis

Cause Analysis is a method of problem-solving used for identifying the root causes of faults or problems

Standardized Work

Standardized Work is a systematic determination and documentation of work element sequence and process for each operation

Visual Management System

Visual Management System is a technique that communicates important information in the physical workplace

Module: Short Interval Control / Active Supervision

Short-interval control identifies and acts on opportunities to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of production

SMART Goals

Goals that are: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Specific

PDCA (Plan, Do, Check, Act)

PDCA is an iterative four-step management method used in business for the control and continuous improvement of processes and products
