                Community Read Comes to Geneva

Through the partnership of Geneva Reads, the Geneva Public Library, Writers & Books, Rochester-area libraries, and our GHS Library, the Big Read/Community Read is coming to the Geneva community in October!  The Community Read is The Things

They Carried, by Tim O'Brien. A finalist for both the 1990 Pulitzer Prize and the Na-tional Book Critics Circle Award, The Things They Carried depicts the men of Alpha Company: Jimmy Cross, Henry Dobbins, Rat Kiley, Mitchell Sanders, Norman Bowker, Kiowa, and of course, the character Tim O'Brien

who has survived his tour in Vietnam to become a father and writer at the age of forty-three.  Local - and free! - events will include a book dis-cussion, a film series, a nearby presentation by the author, and also programming next month in the GHS Library Media Center when our GHS stu-dents will have a chance to meet and have dis-cussion with Vietnam vets as we examine the book's themes and motifs.

On October 1, 2010, at Opening Day ceremonies across America, 1,750 diverse young leaders of City Year will pledge to give a demanding year of full-time service and sacrifice to help students and schools succeed. The 2010-2011 corps, the largest in the organization's 22-year history, were selected from a record number of 8,400 applicants from across the United States to serve in City Year's 20 U.S. locations. City Year corps members serve full-time in high-poverty schools from the before the first bell - energetically greeting students each morning at the school house steps - providing high-impact tutor-ing and positive school climate activities throughout the day, and operating homework help and academic-based after-school programs that extend the learning day. For more information on the ceremonies, please visit www.cityyear.org/openingday.aspx
