The Golden West College FoundationThe Golden West College Foundation was organized in 1985 to solicit and manage gifts to benefit the

college and its students. The Foundation is dedicated to supporting the College’s mission of providing

comprehensive academic opportunities to the community for lifelong learning.

A board of directors, who provides the leadership and direction for the organization’s operation, manages

the Foundation. The Foundation has grown steadily since 1985 with assets over $1,900,000. This has

been accomplished through donations of cash, bequests and grants from individuals and businesses. The

Foundation has provided $2,810,949 in scholarships to Golden West College students. In addition to cash

assets, the Foundation annually receives donated equipment and supplies that represent thousands of

dollars in gifts in-kind.

The primary focus of the Foundation Board of Directors is working toward building support for college-wide

needs. To nurture groups who have special interests in supporting Golden West College, the Foundation

provides staff support and direction to three auxiliaries. Each auxiliary is managed by its own board and

officers, requiring membership dues for operational expenses.

The Golden West Foundation continued its participation in the Scholarship and Awards Ceremony held in May by awarding scholarships to over 200 students. Since 1986, the Foundation has awarded over $2,800,000 to deserving students. This has been extremely gratifying to the Foundation as the awarding of scholarships is a direct contributor to the enhancement of student success at Golden West College.

On Saturday March 25, the Foundation held its ninth annual major fundraiser, the “Golden West College Gala.” Our success with this event continued, raising approximately $132,000-- a new record. The proceeds funded the Foundation’s Wish List Program and the Foundation’s Endowed Scholarships. We particularly want to thank Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., Elmore Toyota and Union Bank of California as major sponsors and all the other underwriters who gave so generously to this event. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Gala Committee and its co-chairs, Emilee Young and Charla Kabana, as well as the community at large for continuing to support this very important event for the college. We are looking forward to continuing success at our tenth Gala scheduled for March 24, 2007.

Our 15th Annual Courtyard of Honor Ceremony was celebrated last October. We had six Pillars of Support (+$25,000) including the Profesóra Cronk Memorial Pillar, Charlie and Margie Bunten Pillar, Carolyn Cunningham Pillar, El Viento Pillar, the James Jordan Memorial Nursing Pillar, and the Norah Morrison, J.D., C.F.P. Pillar. The donor wall was increased by 40 donor names, with seven in the Golden Society ($10,000+) category. Three outstanding GWC alumni were honored as Alumni Pillar of Achievement recipients. Since the inception of this awards program in 1991, seventy-three alumni have been honored.

As we look to 2007, we want to express our collective gratitude for the support and leadership of the Foundation Board members whose continued commitment and participation is critical to the overall success of the Foundation’s mission. The Foundation’s objectives for 2007 include expanding Board membership and continuing a high level of participation from our members while seeking fresh ideas for new fund raising opportunities and existing programs.

This year has continued to be relatively challenging from an investment perspective with the market basically performing in a relatively narrow range. Under the guidance of the Investment Committee and its chairman, Doug Fabian, we have exercised a high degree of conservatism relative to our investments during the past year and will continue to exercise prudence in our efforts to increase the value of the portfolio and to provide a reasonable return on endowed funds. I would like to take the opportunity to thank Fabian Investment Resources and Spectrum Asset Management for their continued support and guidance on a volunteer basis.

In closing, I would like to personally thank the Foundation Board of Directors, Golden West College President Wes Bryan, and those who have provided advice, counsel, professional guidance, financial support and personal time to the Board during the past year. It is not often that I have had the unique opportunity to work with such a dedicated group, and I look forward to the upcoming year in which we will work as a team towards the goal of enhancing student success at Golden West College.

Message from Golden West CollegePresident, Wes Bryan

President, Golden West College

As you are aware, Golden West College is celebrating “40 years of excellence.” Our year long celebration started with our participation in the Huntington Beach Fourth of July parade where our Foundation partners with Huntington Beach Hospital to sponsor a float. This year we won the Sweepstakes award. It was also gratifying to see our current student body president, Brandon Shelly, as well as our first student body president from 1966, John Furbish, waving to the crowds.

At each of our events, I have had the privilege of meeting students who have benefited from the generosity of your support. Some were scholarship recipients, others were helped through the book loan program, and others were able to use equipment in their classrooms purchased with wish list donations. Living in an affluent area we sometimes forget how important these efforts are in making a significant difference in the lives of our students. Getting to meet them years later, it is also rewarding to see the difference they have made in the lives of others. It simply validates what we already know intuitively – that an education not only improves the quality of an individual life – it contributes to the community as a whole. It is a gift that keeps on giving. After all, a Foundation that spends over a quarter of a million dollars per year of its bequests on student scholarships is really about building futures.

I am proud to be associated with a Foundation Board that understands the importance of educational opportunities and donates their time and energy to help expand them for students in need. This is why I have made it a high priority to aid in the expansion of our Foundation Board and increase our donors and scholarships. Recently, I read an article in the “Chronicle of Higher Education” that pointed out that donors increasingly are realizing the importance of supporting two-year institutions because they understand that importance of helping students get ready for transfer or learn entry level job skills. They know that if they can help them get a strong start, they are more likely to finish their degree or certification. Community colleges play a central role in workforce preparation.

I hope as you review this report you will consider involving yourself to a greater degree in the projects that our campus community sponsors. Without your support, the college could not begin to offer the scholarships and programs which provide our students with so many avenues to success. I am excited to be on this Board as we make plans together to ensure that the next 40 years will be as bright as the last.

On September 12, 2006 over 200 faculty and staff convened in the tiered amphitheater for an impressive group photo, the first since the opening day dedication ceremony on September 12, 1966. Each decade group stood together making a beautiful rainbow of color.

Happy 40th Anniversary GWC

Faculty and staff received different colored tee shirts based on which decade they became a permanent GWC employee: 60’s employees wore blue and white tie dye, 70’s wore orange, 80’s wore green, 90’s wore purple, and 2000’s wore red.

Page 6: The Golden West College Foundation · The Golden West College Foundation ... names, with seven in the Golden Society ($10,000+) category. Three outstanding GWC alumni were honored

The college kicked off its 40th anniversary celebration with a retro-60’s float in partnership with Huntington Beach Hospital.

With the Master Blaster confetti machine in high gear, the float rocked up Main Street to great 60’s music of the Jon Kubis Band with the G-DUB, the 1971 VW Bus Outreach vehicle, in the lead. Driving the G-DUB was President Wes Bryan, and

riding shotgun was CEO of Huntington Beach Hospital, Mary Botticella.

On the float, representing Golden West College, were Judy Elmore, GWC Foundation President, John Furbish, 1966 Associated Students President; Brandon Shelly, 2006 Associated Students President, and Edith Cardinali, charter staff member and the Classified Employee of the Year.

GWC Public Safety Officers are using the “buddy-system” in order to partner up with students to help provide our faculty, staff, and students with additional campus security through a bike patrol pilot program. The purchase of two (2) Smith and Wesson police bike packages, funded through the Foundation’s Wish List program, will ensure that the entire campus community will benefit from this service almost immediately.

The Smith and Wesson police bike packages include two (2) 24 speed police force mountain bikes with helmets, dual strobe lights, trunk bags, Modular Nite-Rider sirens, and rear lights. The GWC Public Safety department will staff the program with student Campus Safety Assistants (CSA’s) selected through an initial recruitment and interview process. The CSA’s will then be provided training similar to that of law enforcement bike patrol units across the state. The Public Safety Officers that volunteer for the program will also be given the opportunity to train along with the CSA’s in order to supplement the ranks of the program and team with a student to provide additional training and total quality service.

“The program is not only a boost in the level and depth of public safety services we are able to provide the campus community, but also a great opportunity for students seeking on-campus employment to provide a real service to the campus and our surrounding community,” states Mike Duffy, Director of Public Safety.

CSA bike patrols will maintain high visibility and focus their attention on areas of the campus such as the parking lots in a combined effort with public safety officers to deter incidents from occurring. Their maneuverability on and around the campus will help to maintain adequate response times to requests for service, as well as reduce the amount of vehicle traffic on the interior of the campus. The program will be implemented in February 2007.

A Charitable Gift Annuity is an extraordinary way to make an irrevocable deferred donation, increase your income, and slice your tax bill — all in one transaction. Our Charitable Gift Annuity program was created as a service to our many friends who have expressed a desire to make a gift of significance, while still retaining income from the gift property during their lives.

The Foundation has secured its second $25,000 annuity with Carolyn Cunningham of Seal Beach, Leisure World. These funds will be allocated to the Nursing Department for unrestricted use.

Golden West College Foundation Gift Giving Opportunities

Gift Annuities

There are a variety of options to consider when making a gift:

Annual FundCash contributions to the Foundation’s annual fund are a critical source of private support for the college. Annual fund donations finance the scholarship program and other endeavors that strengthen the college but are not funded by the state.

Memorial GiftsGifts in memory of loved ones and deceased friends — or gifts which honor living individuals — are gratefully accepted by the Foundation.

Such contributions are often used to reflect the interests or talents of the person being honored. The Foundation is pleased to help potential donors explore appropriate uses for the memorial gifts.

Foundation Auxiliaries

After 13 years of presenting the highly successful scholarship fundraising Fashion Show, the GWC Patrons got adventurous and tried something new for 2006 with Chefs for Scholarships. They changed their venue from the Hilton Waterfront back to the campus. Over 20 local restaurants and beverage establishments were invited to provide tasting samples. Designed as a family event for faculty, staff, and community members, it included continuous entertainment, a wonderful sampling of great food and beverages, and a chance to socialize with friends and colleagues. This first time venture netted over $16,000—a Patrons fundraising record!

Deemed a rousing success by co-chairs Joanne Bumm (left) and Jo Andrews (right), and enthusiastic attendees, Patrons will host the second annual Chefs for Scholarships in September 2007.

monochrome, but the technology for printing photographs on fabric has come so far in recent years, that the 40th Anniversary quilt is in full color. Surrounding the photographs are the names (signatures) of campus personnel who donated $20. Proceeds from the signatures will go into the scholarship fund.

Non-Cash Donations, con’t.

The STAR collection has served the students well this semester. Almost all curriculum areas on campus have a book representation. Additionally, campus faculty are starting to recommend purchases and sending their students in large numbers to use the books we have purchased. So far we have spent $6690 of the $10,000 allocated for the 2006-2007 school year. Most of the books have circulated (been checked out) at least 8-10 times, although, we have a few heavy users that have gone out over 100 times! And students are starting to get in their requests for the Spring 2007 semester. So again, thank you so much for the allocation of funds for the STAR reserve collection, it really has made a difference in many students success on the GWC campus.

“Fund raising is the gentle art of teaching the joy of giving.” - Henry A. Rosso

The first Pillars of Support were inducted at the inaugural Courtyard of Honor Ceremony in 1995. Since that time, GWC has honored 45 Pillars of Support with four of them inducted this past October. A Pillar represents $25,000 or more in cash donations by either individuals or businesses. These gifts represent over $1 million.

These endowed funds are designated to student success in a variety of areas such as student scholarships for Huntington Beach Police Department cadets in the Criminal Justice Program; scholarships that assist student nurses; scholarships in memoriam that allow the loved one to live on through the success of a student; and funds that build programs that train our students to be on the cutting edge when they transfer to a four year institution or are hired into the workforce.

in 1991. As a part of the 25th anniversary

celebration, the first honorees were installed

on September 12, 1991. This past October

the Foundation inducted four new recipients

bringing them to an overall total of 72 inductees

since 1991. Each nomination is recommended

to a campus committee from different

disciplines. The committee recommends the

top six candidates to the president for final

selection. The recommended candidates must

have completed at least 30 units at Golden West

2006 Scholarships &Student Recipients

Since 1986, the Golden West College Foundation has

processed $2,810,949 for student scholarships. Each

scholarship application involves a process of review

and consideration by multiple scholarship committees

choosing the recipients according to each scholarship’s

required criteria. These committees consist of donors,

faculty, staff, and managers from a variety of academic

disciplines on campus.

The Scholarship & Awards Convocation held May 9

awarded 183 scholarships to GWC students. During

2005/06 a total of $336,543 was awarded, representing

a 29% increase in donations over 2004/05.

The prestigious R. Dudley Boyce Outstanding Student

Award went to Erin Sullivan. Erin was this past fall’s

Homecoming Queen and served as vice president of

the Future Teachers Club. Erin is most proud of being

an Honors student and Alpha Gamma Sigma Honor

Society member—maintaining a 3.67 GPA, and planned

to attend California State University Long Beach 2006

in the fall semester. She will continue to pursue her

lifelong dream to become a teacher.
