HPGCL
POWER SCENARIO
CAPACITY ADDITION PROGRAMME OF HARYANA
• In the 17th Electric Power Survey carried out by the CentralElectricity Authority (CEA), New Delhi, peak demand of 6839 MWhas been projected for Haryana during the year 2011-12.
• However, on the basis of actual load growth pattern, Haryana hasmade liberal projections of 15% per annum increase in growth ofpeak demand which is expected to reach 7335 MW during 2008-09 and 11155 MW by the year 2011-12.
• Haryana has accordingly embarked on an aggressive programmefor capacity addition to the tune of 5000 MW during the 11th Planperiod.

The proposed site in village Kumharia (in DistrictFatehabad) found suitable as per the preliminaryinvestigation.
Detailed investigations carried out in the year 2001 by theSite Selection Committee of NPCIL
The site was assessed for a potential of 2800 MW (4x700MW units).
Haryana Irrigation Deptt confirmed availability of total of 320cusecs of water for 2800 MW plant, in January 2006.
The Site Selection Committee in June 2007 againinvestigated the site for setting up 2X700 MW Nuclear PowerPlant in the first stage.
NPCIL has recommended this site besides three others

Phasing out of Faridabad Thermal Power Station
HPGCL OLD AND OBSOLETE UNITS
•The three Coal based Thermal Units at FTPS, Faridabad weresupplied and commissioned by M/s. BHEL, in November 1974, March1976 & April 1981.
•These Units were originally rated for 60 MW Capacity each and weresubsequently de-rated to 55 MW by the Central Electricity Authority(CEA) on 11 January 90 on account of technical constraints which still
exist.
•The Units are based on obsolete technology and have already out-lived their useful life as the designed working life of a thermal Unit isnormally considered as 25 years.
•These Units are designed for coal inputs with very high calorific value(5500 Kcal/kg) and low Ash content (i.e. 22%). Coal with theseparameters is not being supplied by the coal companies since lastmany years.
HPGCL The major constraints are :
• Very high cost of generation• Poor coal quality. • Poor quality of raw water.• Problems in ash disposal. • Non availability of standby auxiliaries.• Location of the plant in the heart of the city with a
Municipal road passing through.• Major Safety Hazard.• Environmental issues.
HPGCL PHASING OUT
During August 2005 the Government of Haryanaaccorded administrative approval for:
Phasing out the existing coal based 3x55 MW FTPS inthe next 5-6 years.
Setting up of 1050 MW (3x350 MW) Gas basedCombined Cycle Power Plant at Nawada Koh nearBadkhal during the 11th Plan.
HPGCLUNIT-2 RETIRED
• Though, the performance of all the Units has gonedown during the last 3-4 years, the deterioration inperformance of Unit-2 was very rapid due torepeated failures of boiler tubes on the one sideand turbine blade failure on the other side.
• The Board of Directors of HPGCL in its 66th
meeting held on 15.10.08 approved the phasingout of Unit -2 of FTPS.
• Government & CEA approval for phasing out units1 & 3 by March 2010.
