IEBA
Is a local development association, private and not for profit, created in 1994, in Mortágua in the Portuguese region Centro. Its' statutory objective is
“(...) the development of its territory, namely through the technical support and the promotion of
economical, cultural and social activities, human resources, education and training and also through the
creation and management of enterprises.”
Mission:
IEBA is an association that aims at contribute to social cohesion, integrated and sustainable development of the territory, people and organizations with we collaborate, through the realization of activities, projects and specialized technical services, in the economic, social and cultural fields.
TERRITORIAL CONTEXT IEBA is located in a small municipality named Mortágua in a rural/interior territory in Portuguese
region Centro, in the middle and near from 3 important cities in this region: Coimbra, Aveiro and Viseu and at a 1h:30m drive from Porto and 2h:30m drive from Lisboa.
Mortágua has 10.000 inhabitants, distributed by 90 small places in a 250 km2 area; the population density is therefore 40 inhabitants/km2 - which is low.
Mortágua' soil is mainly covered by forest - 84% and only 16,8% is used to agriculture; there is also a dam in river Mondego, creating a beautiful lake. Nature, sports and eco-tourism is a high potential economic sector, existing a five star resort nearby the dam lake, well known by international canoeing teams, which stay there for its unique training conditions. Energy is a very important sector in this territory, existing production of hydro-electricity in the river dam, wind energy and biomass from eucalyptus forest wastes.
The main demographic trends are the week dynamism and negative growth of the population; a decrease of the younger population and an increase of the population with 65 and more years, which causes a population aging and an increase of the old people dependence. The school level of the population is low, and is very difficult to create news jobs, especially to the young generation; even though, unemployment rates are lower when compared with the region and the country.

The overall objective is to use ball sports (five-a-side football, football, basket and mini basket, handball,
volleyball, beach volley, rugby, baseball, softball, bowling, golf and mini golf, tennis and ping pong) as a
catalyst for transmitting life skills to children and youth in order to reduce violence, prevent bulling and other
social problems. Children can learn about rules, fair-play and practice conflict resolution without violence.
This will promote ethic values and healthy life styles among young people.
