CETListakingaleadershiproleinpromotingandenhancingteachingandlearningacrosscampusthroughthefollowingtwocampus-wideinitiatives:

1. Provost’sEvidenceofTeachingEffectivenessInitiative.Thisinitiativewascreatedtoexploreandexaminebestresearch-basedpracticesfortheevaluationofteaching(formativeandsummative).Formativeevaluationprovidesinformationforongoinggrowthandimprovementforfaculty.Summativedatacanbeusedfordecision-makingpurposessuchastenureandpromotion,reappointment,andotherpersonneldecisions.Thegoalsofthislongtermprojectareto:

• TaskForce1–Redesign“CourseEvaluation”Developrecommendationsfortheuseofmultiplemeasuresandtriangulationofotherevidencetoteachingeffectivenessforformativeandsummativeevaluation.

• TaskForce2–DesignOtherMeasurementsforTeachingEffectivenessDeveloprecommendationsfortheuseofmultiplemeasuresandtriangluationofotherevidencetoteachingeffectivenessforformativeandsummativeevaluation.

3. GatewaystoCompletionProject(G2C).OaklandUniversityenteredintoathree-yearinitiativecalledGatewaystoCompletion.Theprojectwilllastthroughthe2018-19academicyear.Thefirstyearoftheeffortisfocusedonhelpingfacultyandstaffgatherandanalyzeevidencetocreatecoursetransformationplans.Theredesignedcourseswillbetaughtandrefinedinthesecondandthirdyearsoftheproject.TwocourseswereselectedfortheG2CprojectbasedonopportunitiestoincreasestudentsuccessandreducehighDFWIratesintheseintroductory,foundationcourses.ThesecoursesincludeBiology110:IntroductoryBiologyandMath111:IntroductoryCalculus.TheleadfacultywhoareworkingtoredesignthesecoursesincludeSarahHoschandJonathanYatesfromBiologyandLazloLiptak,KevinAndrewsandAnnaSpagnuolafromtheMathdepartment.TheSteeringCommitteeincludesadditionalstafftooffersupport.Thisfirstyearinvolvedcollectingandenteringpredictiveanalyticstodeterminetheneeds.Facultywereinvitedtoparticipateinlocal,regionalandnationaltrainingopportunitiesincludingwebinarsandconferenceshostedthoughtheGardnerInstitute.Duringthesummer,theBiologyfacultywillbeworkingonredesigningthecourseandimplementingthechangesinthefallandwinter.TheMathteamwillmeetduringthefall2017toredesigntheircourseandimplementthechangesinthewinter.

CETLispleasedtowelcomeJenniferHeislerasoursecondChairFellow.TheChairFellowprovidesmentorship,andorganizeseventsandresourcesforchairsandprogramdirectors.Thisfellowshipisaone-year,part-timeappointment(averaging8hoursaweek).JenniferM.HeislerisanAssociateProfessorinthedepartmentofCommunicationandJournalismintheCollegeofArtsandSciences.Shejoinedthefacultyin2001afterreceivingherPh.D.inFamilyandInterpersonalCommunicationfromMichiganStateUniversity.JenniferservedasChairpersonofCOM&JRNfrom2009-2015duringwhichtimethedepartmentexperiencedsignificantgrowthincludingmultiplenewfaculty

members,agraduateprogram,andseveralundergraduateminors.Herresearchinterestsexplorehowfamiliesdiscuss(ordon’t)difficulttopicssuchasdating,relationships,genderroles,religion,andfinances.Jennifer’smostrecentworkexamineswork-familybalanceforfacultymembersinhighereducation,includinghowtheroleofdepartmentChairpersoninfluencesdepartmentalcultureforfacultywithchildren.
