Dear Friends of Centenary College,

The need for lifelong learners and leaders has never been

greater. At Centenary, we are dedicated to providing our

students with an exemplary education that shapes mind,

intellect and character. Whenever I hear the stories of our

students, faculty, staff and alumni, I am reminded that what

Centenary truly excels at is changing lives.

In this President’s Report you will read about some lives

that have been changed by this institution and how

Centenarians in turn are inspired to change the lives of

others. Here are some of the ways that Centenary is leading

by serving others:

• We were the first college in New Jersey to make

community service a prerequisite for graduation. This

past year, the Centenary College community donated

more than 21,000 service hours to worthy organizations

in our region and beyond. From the more than 400

Centenarians who traveled to the Louisiana Gulf Coast

to restore homes and hope since 2006, to nine Midnight

Runs that brought food and essential supplies to the

homeless in New York City last year, Centenarians have

touched the lives of thousands.

• New academic offerings in Environmental Science,

Film Studies, Costume Design and Creative Writing

were introduced during the 2009–2010 academic year.

These programs will create greater career opportunities

for students and meet the emerging needs of the

marketplace and society. Graduates of our new

concentration in Environmental Science, for instance, will

be well prepared to work on solutions to environmental

issues, whether it is through advanced study or entry-

level positions.

• Twenty-six faculty members became certified for the

launch of Centenary’s Prior Learning Assessment

(PLA) program and can participate in an initiative that

awards college credit for life experiences such as

employment, military service and volunteerism. Studies

have found that PLA students earned postsecondary

degrees at much higher rates than other adult learners.

This innovative program is just one example that

demonstrates Centenary’s commitment to developing

the human capital so critical to our nation’s success.

As President of this institution, I am deeply proud to reflect

on the tremendous work Centenarians have accomplished

this year. At the same time, however, we must look to

the future. The opening of the David and Carol Lackland

Center has strengthened our effort to make this campus an

educational, cultural and artistic beacon for northwest New

Jersey. Members of our faculty maintain their commitment

to a relevant curriculum that prepares our students

for successful careers and inspires them to make their

communities a better place.

We could not continue this great legacy of transforming

lives without your support. We are profoundly grateful to the

alumni and friends of Centenary whose generosity makes

our good work possible. On behalf of the entire Centenary

College community, I thank you for your belief in our

mission, achievements and goals.

Warmly,

Dr. Barbara-Jayne Lewthwaite

President, Centenary College

Opportunity of a LifetimeWhen Psychology major Amanda Ziemba ’10

joined the Centenary Substance Abuse

Research Team last year, she never

imagined the opportunity would lead to a

job in her chosen profession. Ziemba was

one of six Centenary Psychology students

who completed a research project on

substance abuse treatment and presented

their findings at the Eastern Psychology

Association (EPA) Conference last March.

She parlayed the experience into a full-time

position with medical imaging software

company Canfield Scientific, Inc., where she

is employed as a clinical project associate.

“I never would have known this kind of

position existed if not for being a part of the

research team at Centenary,” said Ziemba,

who will complete her Centenary degree

this December. “It definitely opened my

eyes to the fact that there are still so many

questions that have not been researched

and need to be answered.”

Centenarians Made news 2009-2010 the Proposal Heard around the world When Valedictorian Emily Hawley ’10 proposed marriage to Joshua Walker ’10 at the end of her valedictory address at May Commencement, the couple’s romance and Centenary made headlines on major networks and more than 600 newspapers throughout the region, nation and world.

Centenary’s Good samaritan Centenary College presented a “Good Samaritan Award” and a $10,000 annual scholarship to

9-year-old Reese Ronceray, who saved 5-year-old Andrew Gentile from drowning. Reese took swimming lessons at Centenary for three years and credits the College as well as an episode of “Sponge Bob SquarePants” for

his swimming ability. College President Dr. Barbara-Jayne Lewthwaite presented Reese the award on July 14, 2010.

Beacon for the region Centenary College celebrated the Inauguration of the 12th President of the College Dr. Barbara-Jayne Lewthwaite on April 9, 2010. The theme of the milestone event was “Beacon for the Region” to highlight the many ways the College impacts lives and communities in northwest New Jersey.

Finishing on a High noteThe Campaign for Centenary College,

a record-setting initiative that ushered

in an exciting new era at Centenary

College, concluded on June 30, 2010.

Centenarians celebrated one of the chief

accomplishments of The Campaign, the

official opening of the David and Carol

Lackland Center, at a special event on

September 30, 2010.

Since its official announcement in 2006,

three major capital projects in The

Campaign have transformed the College’s

main campus in Hackettstown, N.J.,

and produced far-reaching effects for

Centenary and the region.

“The commitment to building state-of-

the-art facilities that support a vibrant

learning and living environment has

changed the way people see Centenary

College,” said Virginia N. Littell ’04

HA, Chairman of The Campaign for

Centenary College. “Prospective students,

businesses and community organizations

now have a greater appreciation for the

College’s programs of excellence and its

outstanding contributions to northwest

New Jersey and beyond.”

Capital improvements also have raised

the College’s profile, advanced programs

of excellence and fostered greater

engagement in the Centenary community.

The renovated and expanded John

M. Reeves Student Recreation Center

has increased the competitiveness of

Centenary’s NCAA Division III Athletic

programs and put the Cyclones on the

map. The Zeitler Wrestling Facility, a

5,000-square-foot addition to the John

M. Reeves Student Recreation Center,

has provided space to support the

College’s nationally ranked Wrestling team

and allowed more Athletic teams and

recreation programs practice time in the

Folkner Family Gymnasium.

Although it has only been open a short

time, the David and Carol Lackland

Center, made possible by a lead gift from

Carol Burgess Lackland ’54/10 HA, a

member of the President’s Circle, and

College Trustee David A. Lackland ’10 HA,

has already made a tremendous impact

on the College and region. Students are

utilizing the 68,000-square-foot facility

as an exciting learning laboratory for

Communication, Dance, Theatre, Film,

Television and Radio. Everything in the

Lackland Center is state-of-the art, so

undergraduates have the resources to

develop into confident artists, journalists

and performers. Prospective students are

also wowed by the Lackland Center and

are looking to Centenary for its innovative,

career-centered programs and thriving

campus community.

the Campaign that transformed Centenary College

Full teaC accreditation awarded Centenary College was the

first institution in New Jersey to receive full accreditation status from the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC). This rigorous accreditation ensures that Centenary students enrolled in the Undergraduate Teacher Preparation Program and the Master’s in Special Education Program are being taught in classroom environments that model those expected of professionals in the field of education.

advancing the Curriculum Centenary’s Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program earned national accreditation from the Council of Social Work Education (CSWE), paving the way for the education of more social workers to address critical needs in our communities. Additionally, the College introduced four new academic programs in Environmental Science, Film Studies, Costume Design and Creative Writing.

Professional Partnerships Pfizer became the

newest corporate partner to utilize Centenary Adult and Professional Studies (CAPS). A cohort of MBA candidates began the accelerated program last November and are completing their degree conveniently at Pfizer’s campus in Peapack, N.J.

academic accolades The Centenary Women’s Basketball team now holds the second-best team GPA in Division III, right after Carnegie Mellon University. Having posted a 3.613 team GPA in 2009–2010, the Cyclones earned the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll accolades.

Changing Lives

We’re gaining more recognition outside of this region. Winning brings winning.

Will Livingston ’11

‘‘ ’’

First all-americanCyclones wrestler Will Livingston ’11 had only

five matches under his belt going into the

NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships

last March. “I just went in with a positive

attitude,” said Livingston, who sat out part

of last season to recover from knee surgery.

When Livingston took third place in the

championships, he became Centenary

College’s first All-American.

A New Jersey native, Livingston attended

Ohio State and Virginia Tech before transfer-

ring to Centenary. “I didn’t realize I needed

a smaller school,” he explained. After a cam-

pus tour and a meeting with Wrestling Head

Coach John Garriques, Livingston was sold.

Last year, the Cyclones were ranked 27th in

the nation. With five returning seniors, and a

strong lineup of freshmen, the team is poised

for multiple All-Americans and could even

break into the Top 10 national rankings this

season. The unstoppable momentum is good

for student-athletes and for Centenary. “I think

it sheds a brighter light on us,” said Livingston.

“We’re gaining more recognition outside of

this region. Winning brings winning.”

The Lackland Center is northwest New

Jersey’s largest cultural and performing

arts center. With the 485-seat Sitnik

Theater; the Edith Bolte Kutz ’42 Theater,

a black box theater; new dance studio;

and 400-seat dining hall, The New York

Times described the modern two-story,

glass-encased facility as “a Center

bursting with life and raring to open.”

Additional features of the new facility

include WNTI 91.9 FM, the listener-

supported radio station; CCTV Channel

23; a 55-seat café, as well as classrooms,

offices, meeting spaces and lounges.

Though The Campaign for Centenary

College has ended, alumni, friends and

benefactors continue to support the

programs, growth and progress of the

College. Current initiatives underway

include the renovation of Centenary’s

65-acre Equestrian Center in Long Valley,

N.J., new athletic fields and further

improvements and upgrades to campus

buildings and facilities.

strengthening ConnectionsCentenarians love to make gifts online.

Online giving rose 83 percent in

2009–2010 as more alumni and friends

chose to donate to the Annual Fund

through the College’s website (www.

centenarycollege.edu) and the alumni

Web site (alumni.centenarycollege.edu).

Donors also appreciate the fact that

online gifts have an even more immediate

impact on an individual or program.

“We had the opportunity to make a

donations for a specific purpose —

improving the Equine Studies facilities

— which was important to us,” said Carla

and Warren Rosen, grandparents of

Hannah Wild ’13, an Equine Studies

major at Centenary.

Alumni are also connecting with

classmates and their alma mater

from their laptops and Blackberrys.

Centenarians who take full advantage of

the website can access event information,

view photo galleries of College events

and happenings, and join a discussion

group to reconnect with classmates or

talk online about an area of interest such

as Cyclones Athletics or Centenary Adult

and Professional Studies (CAPS). There

are even new ways to network with the

College and alumni.

Linked In, Twitter or

Facebook. Whatever

your preferred method

for social and

professional

networking, Centenary

College offers alumni

and friends more

online options to stay connected. The

College now keeps Centenarians (more

than 1,000 and growing) informed

through an official Centenary College of

New Jersey Facebook page (facebook.

com/centenary.college) and Twitter

account (twitter.com.Centenary_nj). The

College also launched a network on

YouTube (youtube.com/centenarycollege)

and Zinch (zinch.com/college/centenary-

college) that is regularly updated with

videos and news from the College.

the Gates-Ferry distinguished Lectureship National Book award winner and poet Mark Doty inspired many with a reading and Poetics Colloquium on October 19–20, 2009. Doty was the College’s Gates-Ferry Distinguished Visiting Lecturer for 2009–2010. The lectureship recognizes the dedication to the College of Joseph R. Ferry, Trustee from 1948 to 1976 and treasurer of the Board of Trustees for 20 years.

Changing Lives Big sister of the yearAngela Rodriguez ’90 embodies the

Centenarian ideal of “service for a

lifetime.”

An active volunteer with Big Brothers

Big Sisters of Essex, Union and Hudson

Counties, Rodriguez and Sabriyah Jones

were named Big Sister and Little Sister

of the Year last June. The honorees also

traveled to the White House, where they

met with President Barack Obama.

“It was a surprise and great honor,”

said Rodriguez, who introduced her

little sister to Centenary College. The

service-oriented Centenarian, who

graduated with a B.F.A. in Fashion

Merchandising, hopes the award will

bolster her work with young people.

“I would like to combine my knowledge

of the fashion industry with my passion

for community outreach,” said Rodriguez.

“I received some good publicity when I

was named Big Sister of the Year. Now

let’s see what I can do with it.”

enGaGed witH tHe Greater COMMunity 2009-2010Making a difference The Centenary community donated more that 21,000 service hours in 2009–2010. From Psi Chi, the Psychology honor society that raised funds for a school that serves children with disabilities, to the annual Centenary Disaster Relief effort on Louisiana’s Gulf Coast, Centenarians are committed to making the world a better place.

experts on Law enforcement “Emotional Survival for the Emergency Services Professional” was the topic of an annual seminar for more than 125 law enforcement personnel and first responders on May 25, 2010. Centenary College’s Institute for Law Enforcement and Emergency Services Education (ILEESE) sponsored the event. The seminar and ILEESE are funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Help for teachers Educators facing layoffs received a boost from Centenary College. “Education After the Classroom” held on June 21, 2010, was a forum for teachers to learn about education trends and career options within the teaching profession. Teachers who were employed by one of Centenary’s participating Professional Development Schools are also eligible to continue their education at a discount.

Centenary’s continued success is made possible through the support of the people and organizations listed in this report. This past year, donors gave more than $1.45 million to support The Campaign for Centenary College, as well as $1.38 million for the Centenary Fund.

Established in 1990, the Cornelius Walsh Society recognizes benefactors who represent the pinnacle of leadership support for Centenary College. Alumni, parents and friends who donated $1,000 or more know that their gifts to the Centenary Fund advance the programs at the College today and help its students become tomorrow’s leaders. Special thanks to Gail Blank Dawson McNally ’57 and John “J.J.” McNally, 2010 Co-Chairs.

Therapeutic Riding at Centenary (TRAC) has made a

tremendous difference in the lives of special-needs children

and adults. Just ask Dakota Hager, age 16, who has cerebral

palsy yet has received therapeutic riding lessons at Centenary

for three years. “Riding helps my balance and hand-eye

coordination,” said Hager. “Therapy works better when it

is fun!”

TRAC is housed at the Centenary Equestrian Center in Long

Valley and is directed by Octavia Brown, Ed.M., H.C., associate

professor of Equine Studies. The mission of the program, that is

accredited by the North American Riding for the Handicapped

Association (NARHA), is to provide individuals with a variety

of disabilities the opportunity to live healthier lives. Since its

inception in 2003, the program has served approximately 60

clients, most of whom are children. In addition, 30 students

have become certified therapeutic riding instructors through

TRAC. “Professor Brown and the staff have helped me to

grow,” added Hager. “They encourage me to keep pushing

myself and when I don’t understand something, they explain it

to me. It is exhilarating to accomplish something new.”

Susan Boer, Dakota’s mother, describes TRAC as “a godsend.”

“TRAC has been a positive influence on Dakota’s physical and

emotional growth,” she said. “It keeps her believing in herself

and her ability to succeed in hard work. This is an activity that

allows Dakota to feel like other kids her age.”

Centenary encourages me to keep pushing myself, and when I don’t understand something, they explain it to me. It’s exhilarating to accomplish something new.

In just three years, Assistant Professor of Biology Lauren

Bergey, Ph.D., has made a significant difference in the lives of

her students.

“Dr. Bergey was enormously influential,” said Patrick Bowen ’10,

a Biology graduate who now works as a hydraulic technician

for the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Bowen credits

Dr. Bergey and a senior seminar that landed him an internship

with the USGS and later, a full-time position.

Others like Heather Romlein ’10, who began graduate studies

in Microbiology at Seton Hall University this fall, say the

Biology professor was instrumental in their decision to pursue

advanced studies. “She was the one who planted the idea in my

head and told me, ‘You can definitely do this,’” Romlein said.

Passionate about helping students achieve success, the College

awarded Dr. Bergey the 2010 Centenary College Distinguished

Teaching Award at May Commencement. The annual award

recognizes the excellence and dedication of faculty members.

Dr. Bergey said it was an honor to receive the award. “At

Centenary, I make one-on-one connections that I did not get to

make when I taught at larger schools,” she said.

Dr. Bergey received her B.S. in Marine Biology from Millersville

University, an M.S. in Environmental Science from East Carolina

University and a Ph.D. in Biology from Rutgers University. Her

current research looks at behavioral ecology and population

ecology of three populations of fiddler crabs in sites with

varying pollution loads along the New Jersey coast.

At Centenary, I make one-on-one connections that I did not get to make when I taught at larger schools.

the independent College Fund of new Jersey

Centenary College continues to benefit from generous corporate and foundation support given through the Independent College Fund of New Jersey. Begun in 1953, the Fund makes a single, united annual request to corporations and foundations on behalf of the 14 member colleges. For 55 years, the Fund has continued to secure corporate financial support for the State’s independent colleges and to promote a greater understanding of the importance of maintaining the opportunity for choice between public and private education. The Independent College Fund of New Jersey represents all of the State’s fully accredited, privately controlled colleges and universities, except those that are engaged primarily in religious studies.

The following donors contributed to the Fund in calendar year 2009. Most gifts are allocated by formula although a number are designated to specific institutions. Support in 2009 for independent higher education in New Jersey through the Fund totaled $1,535,892.75.

GivinG has never been easier“Centenary makes it so easy to donate through its website. It is so thoughtfully done. We had the opportunity to make a donation for a specific purpose — improving the Equine Studies facilities — which was important to us. Even donors who may not be comfortable with computers will find it easy to make a gift online.”

Carla and warren rosen Grandparents of Hannah Wild ’13

Making a gift to Centenary is fast, easy and secure. Visit alumni.centenarycollege.edu to donate to The Centenary Fund or to make a designated gift. For further information, contact the Office of Strategic Advancement at (908) 852-1400, ext. 2379.
