Welcoming Welcoming

Dear Friends of Centenary College,

Devoted teachers change lives. Plato knew this. So did Albert

Einstein and Helen Keller. It is true for any student who has ever

been mentored, challenged or inspired by a teacher to use their

gifts and talents in ways they never thought possible.

The same can be said for Centenary College. Our greatest asset is

our extraordinary body of committed faculty, staff and

administrators who sincerely believe it is a privilege to help others

forge a path towards self-discovery. The hallmark of a Centenary

education — whether one attended Centenary when it was

Centenary College for Women or after it became a co-educational,

baccalaureate and graduate degree-granting institution — are the

enduring relationships formed between teachers and students that

continue to influence the lives of so many alumni today.

Since becoming President of Centenary College last May, it has

been a great personal joy to reconnect with many of my own

former students who are now accomplished graduates leading

successful and purpose-filled lives. Asked to reflect on their

Centenary Experience, they speak about how their lives were

forever changed by a community that took a genuine interest in

their well-being and future.

Alumni recall professors who set high standards but were always

available for counsel and advice, coaches who encouraged and

challenged them to achieve their true potential, and mentors who

pointed out opportunities that helped them define and envision a

future career path.

I am happy to report that all Centenary students — traditional

undergraduates, adult learners, online learners and international

students — still benefit from this unique brand of personalized

education. Relationships matter at Centenary. It is the foundation

on which our students learn and grow, and the reason graduates

leave this institution smarter, better and more conscientious

individuals. Your support allows us to continue this long-standing

tradition of excellence.

“Relationships matter at Centenary. It is thefoundation on which our students learn andgrow and the reason graduates leave thisinstitution smarter, and more conscientiousindividuals.”

At Centenary, faculty, staff and administratorsbelieve it is a privilege to help students forgea path towards self-discovery.

Educating TeachersCentenary offers Summer Teachers’ Academyfor the second year

Teachers are learning to become

better, more effective educators at

Centenary College. Last summer,

the College hosted its second

Summer Teachers’ Academy for

New Jersey’s K–12 teachers, where participants had the

opportunity to learn how to enhance math and science

curriculum by integrating technology such as Smartboard,

Senteo and iPods and podcasting into classrooms.

The goal of the program, according to Dr. Simon Saba,

assistant professor of Education at Centenary, is to provide

professional development. This will help in-service teachers

educate, inspire and provide tools that help students

become knowledgeable and excited about technology,

math, science and environmental issues.

This year’s Summer Teachers’ Academy drew 40

participants from Warren, Sussex, Morris and Hunterdon

counties, who spent three days engaged in intensive,

hands-on workshops ranging from “Field-Based Learning in

Science using iPods and Podcasts” to “Math Assessment

for the 21st Century.” The program was created with

underwriting support of the FirstEnergy Foundation.

“The feedback from the teachers was extremely positive,”

said Dr. Saba. “They were enthusiastic about bringing

what they learned into the classroom come September.”

As the second woman and second faculty member to lead this

great institution, I am ever mindful of the need to honor the past as

we welcome the future. As you will read in the “Centenary’s

Presidents” section of this report, the College has faced numerous

challenges throughout its 143-year history. Yet Centenarians

always rise to the occasion and managed to adapt and flourish

through difficult times.

This Centenarian is extremely proud of the fact that in spite of one

of the worst financial downturns in history, the College thrived in

2008-2009. For that, we owe a huge debt of gratitude to the many

alumni, friends and organizations that gave so generously this year.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, dedicated faculty and staff and

the entire College community, thank you. Your belief in Centenary

College ensures that we advance our mission and secure a bright

future for generations to come.

Sincerely,

Dr. Barbara-Jayne Lewthwaite

Academic ProgressSeven New Faculty MembersSeven new faculty members joined

Centenary College in August 2009, which

better positions the College to provide an

outstanding education and engage

students in true learning and

real-world experiences. The addition of

full-time faculty also ensures a broad

range of academic courses are available,

so students may complete a degree in a

timely manner.

Academic Programs ExpandCentenary students now have more

options and opportunities in the fields of

Science, Communication and the Arts.

Centenary faculty members developed

four new concentrations in Environmental

Science, Film Studies, Costume Design

and Creative Writing. These innovative

programs allow students to further

specialize within an academic area and

gain exposure to a career path.

Summer Scholars Takes Off If you

build an engaging summer program for

high school students, they will come.

Centenary’s popular summer enrichment

program grew 133 percent its second

year, with more than 250 high school

students enrolled in course sessions

ranging from “Television Production” to

“Math and Chaos Theory.” Many

students returned for a second year,

citing Summer Scholars’ appealing

programs, energetic faculty and staff and

community spirit as the top reasons for

choosing the program.

No. 1 Equine Studies programCentenarians have long known that the

College’s Equine Studies program is the

best in the nation. After Centenary’s

Equestrian Team surpassed 17 elite college

teams to become the Intercollegiate Horse

Show Association’s (IHSA) Hunter Seat

National Champions, the rest of the

country, knows it, too. In a stunning

performance at the national championships

last April, a Centenary rider, Lindsay

Clark ’10, also captured the prestigious

Cacchione Cup. One IHSA official

summed up the equestrians this way:

“The Centenary Team is phenomenal. They

rode like the champions they became.”

Internships Up 21 PercentNickelodeon, CBS News, Sean John,

Seventh Avenue’s hottest street wear

brand, and the Morris County Examiner’s

Office are just a handful of companies and

organizations that offered internships to

Centenary students last year. With more

undergraduates recognizing the value of

experiential learning and faculty members

promoting learning outside of the

classroom, student internships rose 21

percent.

Empowering Students Centenary is

becoming known for its model programs

that ensure student achievement. Last

summer, 100 percent of eligible pre-

freshmen completed the STEP Ahead

Program, a six-week residential plan

designed to prepare incoming students for

college level work. One year later, the

program’s success is evident: 100 percent

of STEP Ahead participants successfully

completed their first year of college.

Additionally, by the end of freshman year,

the average cumulative GPA for all

students requiring a learning

accommodation was 3.1.

National Champions In the world of

Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE),

Centenary SIFE is considered a dynasty.

Last May, the team took first place in the

National Entrepreneurship Competition for

its inspiring “Power of Possibility” project.

Team members traveled to Portugal,

Singapore, Guatemala, Alaska and the

Mexican-American border to help

struggling entrepreneurs gain a foothold in

local and international markets.

Stars On and Off the FieldCentenary’s NCAA Division III student-

athletes are stars on and off the playing

field. Seven teams qualified for post-

season play last year, and both the

Women’s Basketball team and Softball

team reached the ECAC (East Coast

Athletic Conference) Tournament. In the

classroom, the College’s student-athletes

boast a GPA of 3.1. Centenary also leads

the way in ensuring student-athletes

succeed, with an impressive retention rate

of 93.4 percent.

Headliners Noteworthy speakers,

authors and seminal leaders enriched the

Centenary Experience in 2008-2009.

Amari Verastegui, state director for theNot for Sale Campaign, spoke on human

trafficking and globalization for “Global

Mondays,” a series that is part of the

Academic Foundations Course for first-

year students. Mark Morris, theacclaimed founder and artistic director of

the Mark Morris Dance Group, led

student workshops and delivered highly

engaging presentations as the College’s

Gates-Ferry Distinguished Visiting

Lecturer. Budding writers enrolled in the

Summer Scholars program gained insights

into publishing and writing with a visit from

the best-selling authors of The Nanny

Diaries, Emma McLaughlin and

Nicola Kraus.

CommunityEngagement Taking the Plunge Centenary was the

first college in New Jersey to introduce a

community service requirement for

graduation, and giving back continues to

be a trademark of the Centenary

Experience. The College donated more

than 25,000 community service hours in

2008-2009. Initiatives included the annual

Community Plunge, held at the start of

each academic year. In August 2009, 280

freshman and transfer students visited

senior centers, worked with disabled

children and volunteered at a total of 14

sites throughout Warren and Essex

counties.

Ethiopia Reads “Those who read —

bloom,” is the credo of Ethiopia Reads, a

nonprofit organization working to create a

reading culture in Ethiopia. Centenary

joined the international effort in 2009 and

collected 1,500 books that were shipped

to Ethiopia with the support of a grant

from the UPS Foundation. Emeritus

Professor Robert Quade and student-

athletes from the Wrestling team initiated

this worthwhile project.

Becca’s Closet Centenary became thefirst college in New Jersey to form a

chapter of Becca’s Closet, a national

organization that provides formal attire to

high school students who otherwise

would not be able to attend their prom.

The chapter grew out of an Academic

Foundations Course for first-year students,3

1. Centenary’s Equine Studies program is the best in the nation. 2. The College added four new academicconcentrations, including Environmental Science. 3. Student internships are up 21 percent. 4. and participants collected dresses and

accessories at two Open Houses last

spring. Clients were treated to styling tips

from Centenary’s Fashion Design and

Merchandising majors as well. “We hope

that our dedication to this project inspires

others to become involved,” said Nate

Smith ’12, Centenary chapter president.

“It is satisfying to help fellow teens and is

a positive experience for all involved.”

CNN Hero of the Year Liz McCartney

is a familiar face to the hundreds of

Centenarians who have traveled to

Louisiana each January since 2006, to

provide much-needed assistance to those

devastated by hurricanes. McCartney, the

co-founder and director of the St. Bernard

Project, a nonprofit organization

spearheading the rebuilding effort in New

Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward, was named

CNN 2008 Hero of the Year. McCartney

recognized the efforts of the more than

400 students, faculty and staff members

who have volunteered to restore homes

and hope for four years. “This award is

about all our efforts,” said McCartney. “It

takes dedicated volunteers like those at

Centenary to get the work done.”

Launch of a New InstituteCentenary brought its expertise to the

greater community with the launch of the

Institute for Law Enforcement and

Emergency Services Education last March.

The College held a Critical Incident

Response Seminar at Sussex Community

College, the first in a free series of

education programs for law enforcement

professionals. Established to provide a fully

integrated response and crisis

management training for law enforcement

agencies and first responders in northwest

New Jersey, the Institute was made

possible by a $894,348 grant awarded to

Centenary College from the U.S.

Department of Justice.

Global Community Last summer, 23

students from Hoseo University in South

Korea participated in Centenary’s

Summer Culture and Language Program.

The experience was so positive for the

international students, they wanted to

find a unique way to say thank you

and honor the College. That led to a

staging of an authentic Korean wedding

ceremony, whereby students re-enacted

the roles of bride, bridegroom, ceremony

master and others, utilizing costumes,

props and decorations all shipped from

South Korea. Attended by faculty,

students and members of the

Hackettstown community, this singular

event helped to build cross-cultural

bonds and further understanding of

Korean culture.

Advancing CentenaryMeeting the Challenge Many will

remember 2008–2009 as challenging due

to the sudden and devastating national

economic downturn. Centenary responded

to the economic crisis with tuition

programs designed to encourage

individuals to earn new degrees and

certifications in a competitive job market.

The Displaced Worker DiscountProgram allowed individuals separated

from their employment to enroll in one of

Centenary’s adult accelerated programs

and receive a free course. The discounted

program was available through Centenary

Adult and Professional Studies (CAPS) in

Iselin and Parsippany, as well as online.

Centenary also joined the Yellow RibbonProgram and offered free tuition to

qualified veterans of the United States

armed forces. Funding for the program was

made possible in part by a benefit

authorized under the post-9/11 GI Bill. The

bill guarantees tuition funding for each

qualified veteran for any amount under or

equal to in-state tuition at New Jersey’s

highest priced public institution. The

remaining tuition expenses at Centenary are

split evenly between the College and the

Yellow Ribbon program. With the assistance

of the Yellow Ribbon Program, four veterans

began classes at Centenary in Fall 2009.

“Step Up to the Plate” On July 31,

alumni, friends and supporters stepped up

to the plate and hit one out of the ballpark

to support the Centenary College

Scholarship Fund. This year’s Scholarship

Benefit took place when four-time Atlantic

League Champion Somerset Patriots played

the York Revolution at TD Bank Ballpark in

Bridgewater, N.J. Hundreds turned out for

a great evening of baseball hosted by

Steven B. Kalafer, chairman of the

Somerset Patriots and Flemington Car and

Truck Country, and chaired by D. Nicolas

Miceli, market president of TD Bank.

The Centenary College Scholarship Fund

provides tuition assistance to deserving

students who otherwise would be unable

to pursue the dream of higher education.

Since its inception in 1993, major

scholarship events have raised more than

$2 million to support the Fund. Centenary

awarded $12 million in financial aid to full-

time undergraduate students in 2008–2009.

“Hard Hat” Tours “Wonderful.” Took

my breath away!” “Just amazing…it’s so

much larger and impressive than I

anticipated.” These are just a few of the

comments shared by alumni, friends and

supporters of Centenary College who took

“Hard Hat Tours” of the forthcoming David

and Carol Lackland Center.

The tours, which began last summer and

continued through this fall, provided

participants a firsthand view of the

progress of the new facility and the

fantastic opportunities it presents for

Centenary and the greater northwest New

Jersey community.

The Lackland Center was made possible

by a lead gift from David Lackland and

Carol Burgess Lackland ’54 and the many

alumni, friends and supporters of The

Campaign for Centenary College.

Second Major Project Under WayConstruction of a 5,000-square-foot

addition to the John M. Reeves Student

Recreation Center is under way. The

addition, the new Zeitler Wrestling Facility,

will take Centenary’s competitive NCAA

Division III Wrestling program to new

levels. The addition also will contain office

space and will make the Reeves Student

Recreation Center, which was renovated

and expanded in 2007, an even more

attractive facility for prospective student-

athletes. Funding for this addition was

made possible by a gift to The Campaign

for Centenary College from a donor who

wishes to remain anonymous.

1. Centenary is a global community. 2. Centenary partner Liz McCartney was the 2008 CNN Hero of the Year. 3. Initiatives, events and recognition to advance Centenary included (left to right): “Step Up to the Plate,” “Hard Hat” Tours of the Lackland Center, a Wrestling Room for the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center, the Yellow Ribbon Program for veterans and a 2009 CASE–WealthEngine Award for Educational Fundraising.

As Dr. Barbara-Jayne Lewthwaite noted inher “Welcoming the Future” message, thereis much we can learn from our predecessors. The President’s upcoming inauguration onApril 9, 2010, is an optimum time to honorthe past by highlighting the history andachievements of the 11 other individuals who led Centenary College.

Dr. George H. Whitney, 1869–1895 When the NewarkConference of theUnited MethodistChurch founded theCollege in 1867, theyselected Dr. George H. Whitney as the

Centenary Collegiate Institute’s firstPresident. Dr. Whitney oversaw the earlydevelopment of the main campus inHackettstown. Upon his retirement in 1895,Dr. Whitney held the title of PresidentEmeritus until his death in 1913.

Dr. Wilbert P. Ferguson, 1895–1900Centenary’s secondPresident also facedone of the institution’sgreatest challenges:the fire that destroyedthe main building onOctober 31, 1899. Thecause of the fire was unknown; 65 studentsescaped unharmed.

Dr. Charles Wesley McCormick,1900–1902Elected President inthe wake of the 1899fire, Centenary’s thirdPresident encounteredhis fair share ofchallenges: a smallpox

epidemic that quarantined the Town ofHackettstown in 1901. Dr. McCormick is alsothe first faculty member to becomePresident of Centenary College.

Centenary College continues to benefit from generous corporate and foundation support given through the Independent College Fund of New Jersey.Begun in 1953, the Fund makes a single, united annual request to corporations and foundations on behalf of the 14 member colleges.
