Cell organellesTRANSCRIPT
Cell Review (pg 6)
Nucleus
• Control center, contains DNA
Nucleolus
• Region within the nucleus that makes ribosomes
Chromatin
• Long strands of DNA found in the nucleus
Nuclear Pore
• Holes in the nuclear membrane. Allows passage of materials into and out of nucleus
Cell Membrane
• Made of a lipid bilayer. Selectively permeable • Membrane structure (draw)
Mitochondria
• Site of cellular respiration. Turns glucose into energy
Golgi Apparatus
• Processes and packages materials for secretion. The “UPS” of the cell
Ribosomes
• Site of protein synthesis
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (SER)
• Transports materials throughout cell, makes lipids, detoxifies poisons
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER)
• Covered with ribosomes. Transports materials throughout the cell, especially proteins
Lysosome
• Cell “stomach”. Contains digestive enzymes that break down debris, worn out cell parts, and bacteria
Microvilli
• Extensions of the cell membrane. Increase surface area for secretion and absorption
Centrioles
• Form spindle during cell division
