Alison Owens named Missouri Charter School Teacher of the Year

Alison Owens, Lift For Life Academy’s teacher extraordinaire, possesses the ability to teach math like no other. In recognition of her outstanding efforts, she was recently named Missouri Charter School Teacher of the Year by the Missouri Charter Public School Association. She is head of the LFLA math department and has dedicated her 23-year teaching career to empowering her students to learn math concepts that have enabled them to become successful, confident adults.

Her results are shown in the test scores: Our students’ Algebra I EOC scores reached an all-time high of 73 percent in 2011, surpassing neighboring school districts, many county districts and state scores. Alison has also helped our students score extremely high on the math portion of the ACT and gain college credit at St. Louis University. At the 3rd Annual Celebrating Success Fashion Show on May 11, Alison received a special proclamation from the office of Mayor Francis Slay, recognizing her achievements as an educator at LFLA. Congratulations, Alison for a continued job well done!

Lift For Life Academy’s success revolves around lifting incoming students from severe underachievement to grade level proficiencies. The tremendous generosity of our community makes this possible. We extend our deepest gratitude to all our foundation supports. The following are just a few examples of this generosity. Monsanto Fund gave Lift For Life Academy an extraordinarily generous grant for our Lifting Science Program. LFLA will work with Washington University-Institute for School Partnership to improve middle and high school students understanding and academic proficiency in sciences. KEEPING KIDS IN SCHOOL provides those “extra” services, supports, staff and interventions coupled with a rigorous/ relevant curriculum, which help at-risk students stay in school, achieve academically and graduate with the skills required for college, work and citizenship. We are grateful to The Cruse Trust, Florence Heiman Charitable Foundation, the Saigh Foundation, the Pott Foundation, the Kuhn Foundation, the Staenberg Family Foundation and numerous other supporters of this program. Employees Community Fund of Boeing St. Louis made a very generous grant to purchase Study Island to help middle school students prepare for end-of-course tests. The generosity of Pi Beta Phi/Sign of the Arrow allowed the Academy to purchase nonfiction texts for our Reading Improvement Program. St. Louis Philanthropic Organiza-tion funds purchased tools to assess middle school students performance throughout the

Many thanks to our foundation supporters

year. A very kind grant from the Clayton-Ladue Rotary Club was used to purchase a life-size human skeleton and organ models. A grant from the St. Louis District Tennis Association allows LFLA to offer both boys and girls tennis teams. LFLA Board member Joan Bradford made a gift in memory of her son Gavin Bradford Donohue. The Chester E. Flegel Trust made a gift in memory of Esther Flegel, Chester’s mother.

Anthony Bedessie, Marshall Cohen, Norman Klayman and Aryes Byrd with plaques dedicating LFLA’s two art rooms in honor of Peggy Klayman’s love of art. Thank you, Norman and Peggy Klayman!

Marilyn Goldwasser, 72, and Bob Goldwasser, 73, Lift For Life Academy volunteersBob and Marilyn Goldwasser volunteer by helping sixth graders during their math and English classes at Lift For Life Academy. “But sometimes, they teach me,” said Bob Goldwasser, a retired engineer. “I can still do junior high math, but now there’s a matrix the students use in multiplication.” The Frontenac couple tutor from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. every Wednesday. This is their second year helping LFLA students. “He can’t spell and I can’t add, so we’re perfect for each other,” said Marilyn Goldwasser, a retired speech pathologist. Their tutoring strategies are different, too. He likes to stay in the classroom to assist with pre-algebra drafting, while she prefers working with students one-on-one as they craft their personal narratives in the quiet of the hallway. But they both agree on one thing: The dedication of the LFLA teachers. “The students need to get the basics down to do well in school,” Bob Goldwasser said. “They’re doing better here than they were in the public schools they came out of. The kids are all at so many levels. It’s a tough thing for teachers to manage, but that’s where I think we are helpful.” And for us, “It’s a fun morning.”
