A few old couples used to get

together to talk about life and to

have a good time. One day one of

the men, Harry, started talking

about this fantastic restaurant he

went to the other night with his

wife. “Really?”, one of the men

said, what’s it called? After

thinking for a few seconds Harry

said, “what are those good

smelling flowers called again?”

Do you mean rose? The first man

questioned. “Yes that’s it,” he

exclaimed. Looking over at his

wife he said, “Rose what’s that

restaurant we went to the other

night?”

"Three Senior Pals"

Three seniors are out for a stroll.

One of them remarks, “It’s

windy.”

Another replies, “No way. It’s

Thursday.”

The last one says, “Me too. Let’s

have a soda.”

SeptemSeptemSeptemSeptember Birthstone: ber Birthstone: ber Birthstone: ber Birthstone: SapphireSapphireSapphireSapphire The birthstone of September is the sapphire. It is appropriate that this

month’s gemstone, the sapphire, is most commonly royal blue, because

it has been revered by royalty since ancient times. King Solomon was

said to have worn a sapphire ring to protect himself from harm.

Russia’s Ivan the Terrible adorned himself with sapphires because he

believed they strengthened the body and lent its wearer courage. And

Prince Charles chose a sapphire for Princess Diana’s engagement ring

because it is believed to symbolize loyalty, respect, and lasting

affection. The famous blue sapphire surrounded by diamonds now

adorns the hand of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.

What is the secret to living

a long life upward of 100

years? Perhaps the

residents of Acciaroli,

Italy, know the secret.

This small coastal hamlet

south of Naples has the

highest concentration

of centenarians—that’s

people living to 100 years

of age—in the world. No

doubt, the residents of

Acciaroli will be rocking

on September 22,

Centenarians Day.

What is Acciaroli’s

secret? Mayor Stefano

Pisani thinks the longevity

is due to his town’s

relaxed, low-stress

lifestyle. Researchers

credit the diet of locally

caught fish and locally

grown fruits and

vegetables. One

cardiologist believes there

may be a genetic

component attributed to

small, efficient blood

vessels. Luigina

Vigiconte, aged 101,

believes that one must

“always be optimistic,

never bitter, and always

be polite with people.”

Vincenzo Barrata, at 103,

has a different theory: “A

lot of women in my life.”

Must we all move to

Acciaroli to become a

“super-ager,” with less

Alzheimer’s, fewer

cataracts, fewer bone

fractures, and a stronger

heart? Or are there real

lifestyle changes we can

make to live to 100?

Doctors have been trying

to decipher the secret to

longevity for a long time.

Weight control, they

believe, is a big factor to

living a long, healthy life.

People should not only

consume fewer calories but

maximize the nutrition of

each calorie. Also, eat a lot

of fiber, which reduces

heart disease and bad

cholesterol and increases

weight loss. Of course,

activity such as walking

and running is a plus, just

as spending time with

others keeps our brains

happy and nimble. But

what do the doctors really

know?

Centenarian Haruo Ito

advises, “Sleep well.”

Justina Sotomayor says,

“Be loveable.” Frieda Falk

believes that “learning new

things makes

you happy and keeps your

mind active.” The truth is

most likely to be a mix of

lifestyle and luck, and any

added stress you suffer

worrying about how to live

longer is bound to be

counterproductive.

“As Summer

into Autumn

slips

And yet we

sooner say

“The Summer’

than ‘the

Autumn,’

lest we turn

the sun

away.”

Dickinson

September is a month for fun,

I love to have a breakfast bun,

Picking juicy apples, to make a pie,

If I don’t get a piece, I think I’ll cry.

Children up early and out to school,

Guess it’s time to close the pool.

So get out the sweaters, blankets, and boots,

Winter is coming, no more bathing suits.

This month’s wellness

corner is about starting the

day out right with a

healthy breakfast. Often

called the most important

meal of the day, breakfast

helps fuel the body and

mind to be able to power

through the day. So, if

you’re one of the people

who routinely skips

breakfast, you might want

to pay attention!

For people over the age of

60 starting the day with a

nutritious meal can help

fight fatigue and

malnutrition, regulate

metabolism and appetite,

and provide a boost of

energy after eight or more

hours without food.

Starting the day with a

healthy breakfast can help

you feel better and

function better all day

long.

If you are like 69 percent

of Americans over 60 who

enjoys coffee with

breakfast, you can pour

your next cup knowing

that coffee, when

consumed in moderation,

can improve memory and

motor skills. Research

done in Sweden and

Finland in 2009 found that

people over 60 who drank

three cups of coffee a day

were 65 percent less likely

to develop Alzheimer’s

disease or dementia. In

addition, the antioxidants

and vitamins found in

coffee are considered

excellent antidepressants

and memory and

performance enhancers.

Okay, so you’ve had your

coffee, but don’t stop

there. Most nutritionists

consider a meal that

includes whole-grain

carbohydrates, fruit, and a

high protein or dairy

source to be complete and

healthy.

Viola was born on February 26th

1926, she was the second of three

children born to Italian immigrants,

Otto and Irma Molinari.

She lived in Bethpage until May 13th

1945 when she married her husband

Fred Bonello who was in the Army

Air Corp. At the age of 19 she left her

family to move to Phoenix AZ until

his discharge.

They lived in Hicksville until 1953,

and with the help of a GI mortgage,

they bought their home in

Farmingdale. Together, they had

three children; Nancy, Fred Jr. and

Robert. Viola has 6 grandchildren

and 8 great grandchildren.

Her husband, Fred, passed away in

1993 after three years of sickness and

with determination and a strong will

she kept her home. Always lending a

helping hand, words of

encouragement and advice to her

neighbors and friends, Viola became

known as the “Ambassador” of

Midwood Avenue (her street name in

Farmingdale).

On February 23rd 2005, her life’s

journey changed. Although she was

severely injured and she suffered

physically, her mind, will and spirit are

strong.

Anyone who comes in contact with her

at Lake Shore, knows she will give

God’s blessing. She also watches over

the other residents and helps them

however she can.

The staff at Lake Shore is wonderful.

Although her physical limitations do

not enable her to participate in a lot of

activities that are available, she

enjoyed the Senior Prom. The picture

of her and Lori is next to her wedding

picture in her room. Story by daughter Nany Ferraro
