Dear Family & Friends,
It’s September; have no
fear there’s still plenty of
warm weather left and
the last major holiday of
the season still to be
enjoyed! Labor Day
traditionally is
considered the end of
summer. It recognizes
the creation of the labor
or union movement and
honors the social and
economic achievements
of American workers. In
addition to Labor Day,
there is Rosh Hashanah,

Day and National
Assisted Living Week to
celebrate this month!
The month of September
is the perfect time of year
where we begin to
transition from one
season to the next. We
hope everyone continues
to take advantage of all
the activities and outings
we have to offer. Making
friends and making
memories is what life is
all about. We are happy
we could be a part of
your journey….
Before we say our final
goodbye to summer take
some time to sit back and
reflect on a summer well
spent! We sure had a
great time with lots of
memorable moments;
what was your favorite?
A few of ours include the
Senior Prom, Hawaiian
Luau and all the picnics! Until Next Month,

opportunity for residents,
their loved ones, staff,

surrounding communities
to recognize the role of
assisted living in caring for
America’s seniors and
individuals with
disabilities.
“A Spark of Creativity” is this year's theme for National Assisted Living Week, which hopes to inspire residents to tap into their creative side, whether through the arts or beyond. Specifically, residents should explore art therapy as it can offer many benefits to older adults, such as improving cognitive and sensory-

Fun Fact about September • September is the ninth month and the only month with the same number of letters in its English name as the number of the month. • Shakespeare did not mention September in any of his plays. • In 1752 in Britain, September had only 19 days as we changed from the Julian to Gregorian calendar. • September is the only month in which stock share prices have more often fallen than risen.
• Richard Saunders, the 17th century English astrologer and physician, said it was good to eat pomegranates and goats’ milk in September. • The last day of September in any year always falls on a different day of the week from the last day of any other month. • September is the most popular month for birthdays in the United States. Specifically, September 9 is the
most common birthday.

In September 1944 (75 years ago), the average annual salary was $2,600. Minimum wage was 30¢ per hour. The average cost of a new house was $8,600. A Hershey’s chocolate bar was 5¢, a loaf of bread was 9¢, and postage stamps were 3¢ each. A car cost $1,220. But best of all, gasoline was 23¢ per gallon—even cheaper than a gallon of milk, which was 62¢.

Getting an annual flu vaccine is the first and best way to protect yourself and your family from the flu. Flu vaccination can reduce flu illnesses, doctor’s visits and missed work due to the flu as well as prevent flu-related hospitalizations. Increasing the number of people who get vaccinated each year helps to protect more people including the older people, very young children and people with certain health conditions who are more vulnerable to serious flu complications.
Age weakens our immune
systems. This means as you get older, it becomes more difficult to fight off infections and illnesses. This makes seniors at a very high risk for contracting the flu.
Vaccines introduce a dormant virus into your immune system to prompt the creation of antibodies. In other words, they instruct your body to build a preemptive layer of defense against a specific illness.
If you catch the flu after being vaccinated, these antibodies are ready to attack and neutralize the virus, minimizing its impact.
In order to compensate for a worn out immune system, doctors have developed a vaccine specifically for seniors. There is a flu vaccine engineered for seniors known as the Fluzone High-Dose Seasonal influenza vaccine.
Getting vaccinated is the best way to avoid becoming a statistic. Flu vaccines are safe, effective, and widely available.
Flu vaccinations will be given out right here at The Lake Shore starting in October. See your Medical Director for dates.

Our Star of the Month is one of Britain’s most recognizable faces. Hugh Grant has brought his trademark floppy hair, nervous stammer, and upper-class English accent to roles in such memorable films as Four Weddings and
a Funeral, Notting Hill, and Love
Actually. Read on to discover interesting facts about Hugh Grant and to explore his life.
Early Life and Career
Hugh Grant was born Hugh John Mungo Grant on September 9, 1960, in Hammersmith, London, United Kingdom. Grant’s father was an officer in the Seaforth Highlanders. Later in life, he ran a carpet firm and pursued hobbies such as golf and painting. His mother worked as a schoolteacher and taught Latin, French, and music. Grant was fond of literature and acting. He won a scholarship to Oxford, where he studied English and drama and considered a career as an art historian. However, after Oxford, he turned down a scholarship to do postgraduate studies in art history at the Courtauld Institute in London and focused on his acting career instead. After making his debut in the Oxford-financed film Privileged (1982), Grant
dabbled in a variety of jobs, including tutoring, writing comedy sketches for TV shows, and writing and producing radio commercials. He also formed a traveling comedy troupe called the Jockeys of Norfolk. Big Break
Much of his early work went unnoticed except for his performance in Maurice, which won him a Best Actor award at the Venice Film Festival. Nevertheless, at 32, Grant was on the brink of giving up on acting. Then his agent sent him the script for Four Weddings and a Funeral. “If you read as many bad scripts as I did, you’d know how grateful you are when you come across one where the guy actually is funny,” Grant later recalled. His charming performance as a fool in love earned him a Best Actor Golden Globe as well as a BAFTA Film Award for Best Actor. The film became the highest-grossing British film to date with a worldwide box office in excess of $244 million, and Grant was an overnight international star. *To hear more about Hugh Grant and his
rise as an actor join us on Tuesday

In astrology, Virgo’s Virgins are those born between September 1st–22nd. Virgos are one of the most careful signs of the zodiac. They pay attention to detail, analyze problems, and plan so as to leave nothing to chance. Those born from September 23rd–30th balance the scales of Libra. Libras strive for balance, avoid conflict, and desire fairness for everyone. To achieve this, they are sociable, strategic, charming, and diplomatic both at work and home

The Sapphire is the September birthstone. Some linguists and astrologists believe that its name comes from the Sanskrit word sanipriya, meaning “sacred to Saturn.” Next to the diamond, the sapphire is one of the hardest materials known. Sapphires come in many colors (ranging from yellow to green and orange), but the finest sapphire color is a rich, velvety cornflower blue.
Flower of the Month – Aster The aster is the special flower for September. A member of the Asteraceae family, the aster takes it’s name from the Latin word meaning “star” and refers to the flower’s star-like head. Known alternatively as the Michaelmas daisy, starwort, and frost flower, the aster usually blooms in late summer and fall.
