rooms are all decorated so elegantly, thank you to all our Santa Helpers! There is much anticipation for our annual holiday party which will be held on Thursday December 8th. This will be a joyous evening of celebration with a special dinner, a chance to sing some holiday carols with entertainer Tommy Parris and the Lake Shore Staff all ending with a special visit from Santa. During the month we will
also have 3 evenings of “Light Seeing Adventures”- this is were we tour local neighborhoods and admire all the beautiful lights and decorations. We would like to wish everyone a very Happy Holiday Season and a Bright and Healthy New Year!
Happy Holiday, The Lake Shore
The New Year’s Eve
celebration is a time for
recollecting the days that
have passed, remembering
what we have learned and
making changes in order
to get the new year off to
a good start. We make
resolutions, the promises
to ourselves to eat better,
exercise more, and make
better choices. Most
resolutions come and go
as quickly as the parties
we attend in celebration.
It’s difficult to live up to
an ideal or theory, and
most resolutions are just
that, an idea that sounds
good but doesn’t always
fit neatly into our
everyday world. Maybe if
we choose a certain day to
focus on those things we want in the new year, like
spending an hour each

Looking for that perfect
gift for someone on your
“nice” list? Consider a
coloring book.
Coloring books are no
longer just for childern.
Adult Coloring clubs
meet up at bars after
work. Executives gather
employees in conference
rooms for improptu
“coloring sessions.” Just
look at Amazon’s
bestseller list, which
recently included three
coloring books for adults.
The hottest is by Scottish
artist Johanna Basford,
whose Secret Garden offers dozens of
elaborate illustrations.
There’s also Steve
McDonald’s Fantastic Cities, with vast
cityscapes to fill. Think
outside the crayon box
and opt for colored
pencils or even gel pens.
Why are adults suddenly
so drawn to coloring?
Media such as ABC,
Fox, Yahoo, and even
the New Yorker have
tried to explain the
faddish phenonmenon.
Clinical Psychologist
Ben Michaelis explains
that the amygdala, the
part of our brain
responsible for our fight
or flight response, takes a
rest while we focus on
coloring. The process
creates a calming effect.
Dr. Michaelis is such a
believer that he both
prescribes coloring to his
patients and uses it at
home with his own family.
*Now you know all the benefits of coloring; join us for our weekly group Coloring Activities. *Adult Coloring Books also make a great Holiday Gift for your love ones☺

Pleasant Thoughts On every tree the snowflakes glisten,
Holiday songs, we must listen.
Happy times with family and friends,
Christmas is here, and the year it ends.
Children look for toys under the tree,
And pass the day so pleasantly.
Santa and his twelve reindeer,
Make us happy in the coming year. Shining
Star of David, candles bright,
Shining on for all eight nights.
Family and friends dance and sing,
As holiday joy Chanukah brings.
We celebrate a miracle, as it is told,
And the story is passed, to young from old.
The Lake Shore staff is dedicated to
making sure you feel at home. We’ve had several residents move

extend a special welcome to those

It was Ebenezer
Scrooge, from Charles
Dickens’ classic novel
A Christmas Carol, who famously uttered,
“Bah, humbug!”
London publisher
Chapman & Hall
released the book on
December 19, 1843,
and it became an
instant success.
Scrooge, the central
character of the book,
is a bitter miser and a
hater of Christmas.
But after being visited
by a series of ghosts,
Scrooge eventually
learns to love and
appreciate the holiday.
Despite his change of
heart, Scrooge has
always been
remembered for
saying “Bah,
humbug.” To this day,
anyone not in the
Christmas spirit may
even be called a
“Scrooge.”
Christmastime should
be a joyous season, but
let’s face it, buying
gifts, visiting family,
cooking dinners, and
hosting parties can be
stressful. For that
reason, even the most
enthusiastic lovers of
Christmas may find
relief in muttering
“Bah, humbug” on
December 21st,
Humbug Day. The
term humbug is
actually unrelated to
Christmas and dates
back much further
than Ebenezer
Scrooge and Charles
Dickens.

It is with great pleasure we present
Joan Daly as Lake Shore’s Resident
of the Month. Joan was born August
19th 1934 at St. John’s Hospital in
Queens, NY. She is the third of five
children, an older sister, Mary and
brother, Charles and younger siblings
Vincent and Ceil. Her father worked
in construction and was also an Army
man who fought in World War II.
Joan’s mother immigrated to the
United States from Canada. She
worked as a waitress at the U.N. Joan
grew up in a religious family; with
her faith, still something very
important to her even today. She was
very active in church groups and the
Gregorian Chant Choir.
Joan worked in a library on Wall
Street but left after she got married.
She met her husband, Michael, at
church. They married 3 years later, in
1956. They have 6 children-Louise,
Michael, Philip, Richard, Dennis and
David. They lived in the Bronx where
Michael, her husband, worked at the
post office while he attended
Fordham University to get his
teaching degree. The family
eventually moved to Centereach
when Michael got a teaching job.
Joan true to her Italian roots would
hit the counter with a wooden spoon
when the kids were causing trouble
to keep them in line. When Joan had
time to herself she would enjoy
crocheting, knitting, sewing,
calligraphy, and reading tarot cards.
When the children got older, Joan
went back to work. She worked at a
school teaching kids how to drive.
Then she worked in the traffic
department for the Town of
Brookhaven. Joan’s last job before
she retired was working for State
Senator Lack, where she acted as a
liaison between constituents and the
senator. Joan was also Brookhaven
Town’s Woman of the Year in 1987.
Joan has 12 grandchildren-3 girls
and 9 boys; and 5 great
grandchildren with one more on the
way!
Joan has been a wonderful addition
to the Lake Shore Family! If you see
her around stop and say Hi!

You are optimistic and
cheerful. You are known for
your robust humor. But be
careful: boasting can lead to
unhappiness. You keep
everyone entertained, making
sure no one gets too stressed
during the holiday season.
December 7–13: Ivy
You have a great respect for
law and order. People know
they can count on you to
organize and plan. You love
the challenge of a big holiday
party or a lavish family feast.
Perhaps you long to be a
general, chef, or travel agent.
December 14–21: Mistletoe Known as a tireless worker,
you may focus on your task
until you are oblivious to other
things. Your great powers of
concentration may include a
photographic memory. You will
know exactly which gift to give
each person on your list.
December 22–31: Poinsettia
Creative and artistic, you have
many talents. But you choose
your own projects. Curiosity
can lead to success, but your
