COMMUNITY AWARDS BANQUET 2012
Celebrating 40 Years!
1973 - 2013
We have endeavored to make the informa on contained herein as accurate as possible. Please accept our apologies if your name or informa on has been misspelled or omi ed, and please let us know so we might correct our error.
Dean’s Message Now that I’m prac cally a veteran in the Dean’s Office, having been through the rhythms of a full year and more, I am pleased to report that the Community Awards Banquet is one of my favourite events at Augustana. What makes it so special is that we bring together donors who are commi ed to assuring affordability and access to
post‐secondary educa on here at Augustana with the award recipients who are personally benefi ng from their generosity. In this way, we are together affirming the bonds between genera ons that are so important to building healthy communi es, developing future leaders, and assuring that educa on con nues to be recognized as a public, not just a private, good.
As we head toward spring and the conclusion of another academic year, it’s a special pleasure to share with all of you my op mism for Augustana. Yes, it is true that like all of post‐secondary educa on here in Alberta we are facing budgetary challenges. Nevertheless, we are rolling up our sleeves and there
is a palpable can‐do a tude. This is reflected in many places; e.g., in the con nuing support we are receiving from the University of Alberta to expand our facili es and develop new, twenty‐first century learning environments for a growing enrolment; in the collabora on between the City of Camrose and Augustana to raise $5 million to complete the campaign for the Performing Arts Centre; in the development of an Aboriginal Engagement Commi ee to help us improve our services to Aboriginal students and communi es; in the work of our Athle cs department to expand opportuni es for students through sports like soccer and golf; in the determina on of our Execu ve Council to finally realize the dream of an environmental research sta on at Miquelon Lake Provincial Park; and in the commitments of our faculty to monitor student success, increase reten on and gradua on rates, and assess our performance with regard to our goals for student learning.
A year ago, I quoted to you the conclusion of our Unit Reviewers, an external team that included respected academics from other universi es in Canada and the United States. Most importantly, they wrote: “The Augustana Faculty as a unit knows where it is going, and how to get there.” They complimented our staff, our loyal alumni, and our many supporters for what they labelled “a remarkable success story.” To all of you who con nue to play a part, I extend my hear elt thanks.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of our Community Awards Program. It is a program, I am pleased to report, that is the envy of other Facul es in the University of Alberta. As we pause tonight to celebrate its history and to say thank you, I hope that we also can join together as allies to expand our circle of friends who are making generous investments to help young people realize their dreams and aspira ons.
Thank you and best wishes, Dean Allen Berger

The Community Awards Program Our 40 Year History
The Community Awards program was established in 1973 to assist in making post‐secondary studies possible for students with limited resources and to a ract students to the then Camrose Lutheran College. The ini al commi ee, comprised of community members and college officials, was charged with the responsibility of recrui ng gi s from the business community to fund awards. Working with the community, the Commi ee promoted two award funds – the Current Scholarship Fund, now called Annual Awards, and the Scholarship Founda on, which held the Community Scholarship Fund and Associated Endowments. The program met with great success in its early years and that success con nues – several awards established in those first years are celebra ng 40 years of commitment to post‐secondary educa on! The Awards program today con nues to reflect the vision and goals of the founding members. It is administered through the Development and Student Awards Offices at Augustana Campus in partnership with the Student Awards Office on the University’s North Campus. We con nue to invite interested individuals, businesses and community organiza ons to invest in our students. We wish to express our sincere gra tude to all our Community Awards Program donors – past, present, and future for your vision and commitment to fostering the educa on of our students.

The Augustana Community Awards Program … has a direct impact on the students who choose to study at Augustana. These awards are steeped in the tradi onal values of educa on and
leadership that is our community ‐ both past and present.
Annually Funded Awards Annual Awards receive funding each year from commi ed individuals, businesses and organiza ons who have pledged to support an award they have created. The commitment is usually in the yearly amount of the award to the student. In 2012, over $65,000 was received in this way, funding 90 awards to approximately 85 students.
Endowed Awards Associated Endowments are established for many reasons – for example, to ensure the annual funding to an exis ng award, to recognize a loved one or to create a living legacy ‐ in perpetuity. The fund itself is invested and the principal never touched, only the earned interest is spent. In 2012, the interest earned from the Community Scholarship Endowment Fund and Associated Endowments allowed us to fund awards totaling over $109,000 for about 110 students.
Bursaries Bursaries are established by donors who wish to fund a student primarily on the basis of financial need. Bursaries may be funded annually or through establishing an endowment.

2012 Augustana Dean’s Entrance Citation Winner
Awarded to students entering an undergraduate degree program at Augustana Faculty based on superior academic achievement (minimum award average of 95% or equivalent) in grades 10, 11, and 12. Receipt of funding for the second, third, and fourth years is con ngent upon achieving a minimum GPA of 3.5 on a full normal course load of which at least 9 credits per term must be taken at Augustana Faculty.
Rita Baumann First‐Year B.Sc. Biology
“It’s been my goal since ninth grade to win this award,” says Rita Baumann, first‐year Biology student and recipient of the $10,000 Dean’s Entrance Cita on Award. “I worked hard throughout high school to make sure I had the compe ve marks to apply for it.”
Augustana Campus was an opportunity to earn a quality educa on within a manageable class size for the young woman from Thorsby, Alberta. “I'm really used to having lots of one‐on‐one me with my high school teachers,” she says, “and I wanted at least the opportunity to have that with my professors.”
Rita received several other awards – academic entrance and excellence scholarship from Augustana, some from her high school and another from the Alberta Greenhouse Growers’ Associa on, where her mother is a member. A er her undergraduate degree, she plans to apply to veterinary medicine programs in Saskatoon and Calgary on her way to becoming a large animal vet.
“For me, this award means having to worry less about paying for my studies,” Rita con nues. “It relieves some of my stress, because I know I've got some of my tui on covered. My parents don't have to pay as much towards my educa on, so it takes the pressure off them too ‐ and makes me feel less guilty about them having to pay.”
With this award, Rita feels that she can start planning ahead and working during the summer. “I can save money for my educa on down the road,” she grins, “instead of freaking out about amassing a huge student loan so early in my university career!”
Rita Baumann
Outstanding Independent Work Award Winners
The Outstanding Independent Student Work Award is granted twice a year to students whose work has been presented at the Student Conference. The award recognizes the best independent student work over the course of a term. The nomina on is to be submi ed by the mentor of a student who is comple ng a for‐credit independent study who also presented at the Student Conference. A commi ee consis ng of two to four faculty members (drawn from the Research and Learning Environment commi ees), and a student member from one of the commi ees will adjudicate the award.
Alanna Lindsay (Winter 2012)
Alanna is from Wainwright and completed her B.A. in Psychology and Sociology in 2012. She is currently at North Campus in Edmonton, pursuing her master's degree in Speech Language Pathology and Audiology.
In her award‐winning project, she studied undergraduate students who iden fied themselves as “cynical” with respect to civic and poli cal engagement. Alanna detailed their experiences of cynicism and helplessness for Dr. Jason Goertzen’s research.
“Independent work at Augustana is an AMAZ‐ING experience,” says Alanna. “The independent work that I completed in my under‐graduate degree helped prepare me to complete my master's thesis. It's so rare that students have the opportunity to work one‐on‐one with professors. I learned a lot about independent research, data analysis, and cri cal thinking through my project.”
“Dr. Goertzen was an amazing mentor,” she con nues, “and working with him expanded my worldview and increased my desire to learn more about psychology and research in general. Independent research holds you accountable for, and gives you an ac ve role in, your own learning.”

Annelise Welde (Fall 2012)
Currently in her fourth year of a B.A. in Psychology, Annelise was Valedictorian of Hay Lakes School in 2009. She will convocate in June and has been accepted into a September M.Ed. program in Counselling Psychology. Annelise worked with Dr. Rebecca Purc‐Stephenson to qualita vely examine how children experience maternal breast cancer.
“In other words,” Annelise explains, “what is it like for children when their mothers are coping with breast cancer?”
Annelise worked on a similar prior quan ta ve project, but this me she surveyed exis ng qualita ve research and created a cohesive narra ve. The goal is to qualita vely capture the experience of children in ways
that standardized quan ta ve measures cannot.
“It is in mida ng to start an independent project because you realize that the success or failure of the project depends mostly on you,” Annelise explains. “If you don't put in the me and effort, the results will reflect that. Overall, I've found independent project work to be empowering because it makes me realize that, with supervision, I am capable of planning and conduc ng research. I am thankful to have had this opportunity because it sets me up to succeed as an independent researcher in the future.”
Allyson Cornelis (Fall 2012)
From Legal, Alberta, Allyson is in her fourth year of a B.Sc. in Biology. She conducted a literature review and lab work on the influence of Vitamin A on immune cells called macrophages with Dr. Sheryl Gares. “I came up with my own lab ques ons and got to help design the lab project I conducted,” she says. “It was really interes ng to learn some fun lab techniques and to get a feel for what the en re research experience is like. At mes I even felt like a real scien st!”
“I told all of my friends that everyone should do an independent project,” Allyson con nues. “It is completely different than relying mostly on textbooks. There is also the necessity of pa ence, perseverance, and adaptability. I learned quite quickly that things in the lab don’t always go as planned and you definitely have to be flexible and adjust to things.”
“I learned to acknowledge the assump ons I may have made about something and learned how to approach things differently and more efficiently,” Allyson says. “It was great to have my own project that I worked on from its infancy to its comple on. It is something I am proud of and is definitely a highlight of my me here at Augustana.”
