President’sCorner Lisa Buffaloe, CDOA

2013 NADOA President

I cannot begin to tell you how excited I am about the upcoming 40th Anniversary NADOA Institute. The InstituteCommittee has done an excellent job on getting the program speakers, delicious menus and fabulous entertainment.I’m looking forward to all the ‘stars’ that will be showing up at this year’s event and I am encouraging everyone to be‘participants’ and whole-heartedly join in the celebration.

The Red Rock Resort Spa & Casino has become one of my new all-time favorite hotels. You might want to considerpacking some bubble bath or bath salts to enjoy while watching a movie (an extra TV over each tub) and soaking inthe deep luxurious bathtub. On a sad note, Starbucks will not allow the hotel to have coffee service in each of therooms. Early risers who need caffeine before breakfast might consider bringing along a travel pot and coffee, orderinga pot from room service or running downstairs in your jammies to Starbucks.

The spa at Red Rock is Fabulous!! This is actually what drew me to Red Rock in the first place (as many of you know,I am a spa freak). I would highly recommend making an appointment and pampering yourself; especially sinceNADOA gets a 20% discount. You won’t regret it!

I’m not a big gambler, but I did enjoy the casino and people watching. I saw people who were smoking in the casinobut I didn’t really smell smoke. How do they do that? Great ventilation, I guess. I will confess to having already madea small contribution to the Red Rock Casino and will probably donate a tad more in October. Maybe the next trip willpay a little back (ha ha)? It never hurts to dream.

The on-site bowling alley is super fun, especially the Cosmic Bowling at night with the glow in the dark lanes, pinsand bowling balls. Check out reserving the 12 VIP lanes for a group and then you can dance, bowl between your legs, fall down and gutter bowl all you want….all in the privacy of your own party! More options: eat and drink at themany on-site restaurants or catch a movie at the on-site Red Rock Stadium 16 and Imax Theater.

Rent a car at the airport (check out the transportation article for discount information) and take a road trip to RedRock Canyon, just 5 minutes from the hotel. It’s like a mini Grand Canyon…just gorgeous! Plan a day trip to theGrand Canyon (about a 4-hour drive) or visit Hoover Dam (about a 45 minute drive). Still not enough? Take a trip tothe strip and enjoy a show, walk through the many hotels and shop ‘til you drop.

Now with all this action available, please remember the reason for the NADOA Institute….EDUCATION! Theclasses are all new with no repeat speakers from last year. Even some of our own members will be participating inpanel discussions. You won’t want to miss it!

I can’t wait to honor our founding fathers and recognize our many past Presidents and long-time members; withoutthem, we wouldn’t be here today. Your contribution to this organization is what has made us a success in the oil andgas industry and I, personally, cannot thank you enough.

I’m hoping you can all join us in Las Vegas this year for a few days of reminiscing and remembrances, stories and tales, learning, laughter and lots of fun.

NADOA’s 40 Years of ExcellenceSandi Rupprecht and Nancy Cemino - Institute Co-Chairs

The 2013 Institute Committee met on Friday June 7that the Red Rock Resort for our final planning session forInstitute. We had a full house of committee memberseager to share what they have planned for Institute.

The Program committee has set up an excellent speakerprogram this year. We have all new speakers (no repeatsfrom last year) and a great variety of useful topics. Therewill be state specific sessions as well as general knowledgesessions that can help you no matter what state(s) youwork. You won’t want to miss the general sessionspeakers who are guaranteed to keep your interest andmaybe even bring a tear or two to your eyes.

Corporate donations are steadily coming in but costs forInstitute are high so please ask your company to sponsoran event or make a donation to cover some of the extracosts incurred in celebrating NADOA’s 40 Years ofExcellence. Some member companies have donatedspecific door prizes and we have some great giveawaysthis year. If you are donating a door prize, pleaseremember the winner has to get it back home in asuitcase or carry-on. Also, don’t forget to ask yourcompany to sponsor SWAG for the Institute Bags thatare handed out at registration. You are going to love thenew style bags this year.

Our Hospitality committee is going overboard to makesure we have a memorable Come and Go WelcomeReception from 1-6 p.m. on Wednesday as well as amysterious evening at the Thursday night dinner. Afterdinner, the Cherry Room provides a 70’s discoatmosphere where a special guest will judge the dancecontest and 70’s costume contest. You won’t want tomiss the Wednesday and Thursday night events.

Back by popular demand is the NADOA GolfTournament, to be held Wednesday afternoon andbenefitting the Wounded Warrior Project. For those ofyou participating in the golf tournament, you will beable to register for Institute prior to the tournament. The Badlands Golf Club has given NADOA a specialrate of $105 per person. Proceeds from the sale of any“golf scoring advantages” will go directly to the WoundedWarrior Project. There will also be an opportunity forgolfers and non-golfers to make a personal donation tothe Wounded Warrior Project on Thursday. Bring someextra cash or a check with you to lunch on Thursday.

The oversize rooms are clean, comfortable and offerviews of the Red Rocks and pool or the Las Vegas Stripfor only $170/night plus tax. Each room has a minisnack bar and stocked refrigerator. Please note that youwill be charged for the drinks or treats if they are movedfrom the tray or fridge longer than 30-45 seconds. Yourbest bet is to ignore them unless you want them to showup on your final hotel bill whether you consumed themor not. The Hotel Committee has chosen a phenomenalmenu for us. You won’t be disappointed with the mealsyou will be served. Be sure to let us know when youregister if you are vegan, vegetarian, have food allergies orrequire a special diet.

Registration is open on Wednesday from 1-6 p.m. andopens on Thursday morning at 7 am. Be sure to pick upyour Institute bag and visit our information booth too.

Transportation to the Red Rock can be expensive if youdo not plan ahead. We found that taking the shuttlefrom the airport can be a bit challenging. It is free butonly services the airport every two hours (even hours). Itmay be in your best interest to join with others arrivingaround the same time to rent a car or take a taxi. ATown car is also a cost effective idea if there are two ormore of you. The Red Rock Concierge can schedule acar to pick you up at the airport for $55 one way plustip. Please call the hotel in advance of your trip for thisservice. It will cost more if you call the car servicedirectly. The driver will even make a food stop at In-N-Out Burger at no extra charge. (Of course you pay forthe food.) Be sure to check out the transportation articlefor more details.

Once again speaker papers will be available to attendeesprior to the Institute. You will receive an email a weekbefore Institute to enable you to print and bring withyou any materials you need for sessions you plan toattend. This email will also include instructions todownload the papers to your I-Pad. A CD containing allthe papers will be provided to attendees in the Institutebag. Thank you to Compass Royalty Management andQEP Resources for their sponsorship of the InstituteCD’s.

If you have not signed up for Institute, do it now. Thisis one you do not want to miss.

Do you know what WWP stands for? Well, let me tellyou: WOUNDED WARRIOR PROJECT. This is a non-profit organization whose mission is to honor andempower wounded warriors. Their purpose is to raiseawareness and enlist the public aid for the needs of theinjured service members and provide unique programs toassist them in a better recovery.

This year NADOA is proud to join in the support of thiswonderful cause. We will be hosting a golf tournament onWednesday, October 2nd and all the funds raised will bedonated to the Wounded Warrior Project. We will makethe presentation to them at lunch on Thursday as ourKeynote speaker will be Deven Schei; a former servicemanand speaker for Wounded Warrior Project. You will learn

about Deven’s journey and how Wounded Warrior Projectgave him the inspiration and assistance with his recovery. Ican’t even imagine what Deven has gone through but I amtotally looking forward to his motivational andinspirational talk on Thursday. And yes, there will beKleenex on all the tables in case any of you are a big softielike me.

I could go on and on about Wounded Warrior Project andthe amazing things they do to help so many service menand women who have given of themselves to help protectand keep us safe but you can learn for yourself by going totheir website: www.woundedwarriorproject.org.

Submitted by Norma Dooley

WWP

When DevenSchei’s brotherErik was firstdeployed to Iraq, Devenmade him asolemn vow: “Ifsomething happens to youwhile you’re overthere, I promise to finish what youstarted.”

Tragically,“something” did happen. Deven’s brother was shot in the head, rendering him a quadriplegic. Deven kept his promise and joined the Army – determined to stay true to his word.

Deven says becoming a member of the 101st Airborne Air Assault Division was one of his proudest moments. But just as fate dealt its hand to his brother, Deven’s deployment ended in injury.

“I was hit with four 80mm rockets and shot in the left shoulder. I lost a portion of my left calf, a portion of my left thigh, and had shrapnel all over my body. Slip disc

in my back, cartilage missing in my back and knees, tendinitis, loss of eye sight in my left eye, bullet lodged in my left shoulder, PTSD and TBI.”

With all that, including more than 17 surgeries, you’d think the pain, frustration and anguish would be Deven’sgreatest challenges. But he says there was something elsethat hurt him most.

“My greatest challenge was not being with my battlebuddies. Leaving them in Afghanistan was the hardestthing I have ever had to do. Not being able to be on missions with them or train with them always haunted me. I kept up with them all the time calling and emailingthem making sure all missions went well and everyonemade it back in one piece.”

It’s that kind of dedication that drives Deven to help injured service members today.

“I want wounded warriorsto understand there is life outside of the military. Mybrother Erik is the perfectexample. He motivates me tokeep going every day.He never lets anythingget him down.”

ELLIS RUDYFounder & Charter Member Of NADOABy Norma Dooley

As we get ready to celebrate the 40th Anniversary ofNADOA, we cannot do so without talking about EllisRudy. He is a chartermember and as such, hehelped get NADOA off theground and going. At firstNADOA was established asa social function to allow itsmembers to gather forcamaraderie. At one of thefirst meetings in Houston, Ellis invited all thirty attendeesto continue the gathering at his home for an impromptuparty. From that small gathering in the Rudy home, Ellisbegan to host an annual cocktail party that became “theevent” at each Institute, and did so for over twenty-fiveyears. Ellis and Imperial Oil Company have continued tosupport and sponsor the organization ever since. Many ofthe unique parties were held at unusual locations, including a barge trip down the San Antonio River to thehistoric Ursuline Convent and the Gilcrease Museum inTulsa. The charter members decided they could not

continue as a social group anylonger if companies were goingto support their employees andhence turned to an educationalformat so members could learnand gain the knowledge neededto enhance their careers in theindustry. Ellis has been goingto Institute meetings for thelast 40 years. I’m sure you’ve

seen him there and if you haven’t had a chance to meet ortalk with him, you should. His stories are fascinating andthe knowledge he has of the events over the past 40 yearsis unbelievable. But let me tell you a little about Ellis.

Ellis Rudy was born in Houston, TX on July 19, 1930and lived in Stafford, TX. He attended Missouri Cityschools until tenth grade and graduated from San JacintoHigh School after his family moved to Houston. Ellis’sfather had established a demolishing company and mostof his summers during high school were spent pullingnails from lumber, cleaning bricks and selling materials onthe job.

Shortly before Ellis entered Rice University in 1947, hejoined the Naval Reserve in order to finish college beforebeing called to serve in the Korean War. After graduationfrom Rice in 1951, he worked in the demolishingbusiness and later changed its scope from wrecking tomoving houses and dismantling bridges, chemical plants, refineries and multi-story buildings. Most of his workwas on a sealed bid basis and this bidding experiencehelped him later when he started bidding on oil and gasproperties.

Ellis began buying oil and gas royalties as a hobby whenhe discovered the mineral and valorem tax rolls couldprovide all the information he needed to start a businessof buying oil royalties bymail. His hobby outgrewthe wrecking business buthe had no technicaltraining and very littleknowledge of the oilbusiness, so in order tolearn more, he attended25 oil and gas seminars atdifferent universities andlater joined various professional oil and gas associations.

Ellis received his CPL certification in 1981 under thegrandfather clause. He has held several HAPL positionsand served on a number of committees. Besides being acharter member of NADOA, he received Lifetimemembership in 1991 and the corporate award in 1995,

1998 and 1999. Ellis is also a life member of HADOAand ALTA, in addition to being a member of AAPL,NALTA, NARO, WHAPL and TMLA and formermember of SADOA and TAPL.

In addition to buying royalties and real estate, Ellisacquired a number of small royalty companies. He isPresident of Imperial Oil Company, founded in 1899.Imperial was a public company which he took private inthe 1990’s. Imperial now has producing and non-producing interests in nearly every state. Ellis and hiswife Beverly Diamond Rudy, who were married in 1951,have two sons and four grandchildren. Randy, the olderson, was a successful commercial actor in California for20 years. Randy moved his family back to Texas severalyears ago and now lives in Austin. His other son, Russell,is following in his father’s footsteps and is the owner ofRussell T. Rudy Energy, LLC in Houston. Both sonshave attended NADOA Institutes over the last thirty

With our 40th annual Institute nearing, now is a goodtime to review etiquette for the classroom and generalsessions. With cell phones and texting such a part ofour lives, we would like to remind everyone of thecommon courtesies we owe our fellow members andour speakers during general sessions and classroombreak-out sessions. We recognize that many of youare away from work and need to be accessible to theoffice. However, many of you are texting friends, posting on Facebook and tweeting while you areattending Institute sessions. While your employermay not have a problem with this at the office, it is adistraction to others in a classroom session.

Here are some simple reminders to be courteous toyour fellow Institute attendees:

• When in a class, turn off your ringers andsilence the sounds that announce a new text or email.Others around you can be distracted from themessage of the class if phones are chiming andvibrating during a session.

• If you must access your email or messaging, please do so discreetly. If you find it necessary to textan extended response please leave the room to call, email or text. Getting up is less of a distraction to

Institute Etiquettethose around you than an extended time of texting.Fingernails tapping on your phone keypad are noisierthan you think!

• Please remember Institute is an educationalevent. Many of you may be used to sitting in theback of the room during a meeting and texting ratherthan being an active listener to a presentation. Pleasedo not go to class and text or email during the entireclass. If you need to continually text, either do notgo to class or get up and leave so others are notdistracted.

• Our speakers spend hours of their personaltime preparing their classroom sessions and the papersincluded on the Institute CD. Please give them yourfull attention for the 50 minutes they have to present.

• During General Sessions, when people arespeaking from the platform, please limit yourconversation. While you may not be interested inwhat is being said, there are generally 8 others at thetable who might want to hear what is being said.

Thank you for being considerate of others andpracticing gracious manners at Institute.

years and Russell was the organization’s legal advisor fortwo years.

Ellis is known as a “COLLECTOR”; he has thousands ofold postcards, a vast collection of memorabilia andcollectibles from antique toys to political buttons and has

his own private museum abovehis office. Ellis once said, “if Iever want to play hooky frommy desk, I don’t have to go far”.In recent years, he has beensharing part of his collectionwith universities and historicalsocieties. Although Ellis wouldn’tcall himself particularly lucky, hedid gain some notoriety for

winning a Mercedes at an AAPL drawing some years ago.As I said above, if you have not met Ellis, it’s time youdid.
