Terez VanPelt scored 24 points for Concordia despite be-ing held to just two points for the fi rst 19-plus minutes. His spark turned Concordia from a 27.8% (10-36) team fi rst half shooting mark to a 41.4% (12-29) second half fi nish as the Golden Bears outscored the Bulldogs 43-27 in the fi nal 20 minutes.

On Saturday, Concordia nearly completed an improbable comeback trailing by eight with 2:20 to play against St. Cloud State. Concordia scored six straight points in less than a minute to trim the gap to two points.

The Golden Bears continued to get stops as they had to possessions with a chance to tie or take the lead in the fi nal 64 seconds including to good looks at game tying shots in the last 10 seconds before falling short 70-66 to SCSU.

For the second straight night, VanPelt was held in check by the opposition in the fi rst half, going scoreless in the fi rst 20 minutes before fi nishing wiht 12 points and four assists.

Keith Crockett led Concordia with 16 points, six rebounds and six assists and was a catalyst down the stretch on both sides of the ball.

LAST MEETING: DRAGONS 79, GOLDEN BEARS 64Concordia controlled the game early, scoring the fi rst seven points and leading for the fi rst eight-plus minutes of play. But MSUM went on a 26-7 stretch of basketball spanning eight minutes of play and never looked back.

Terez VanPelt led Concordia with 20 points and fi ve assists. MSU Moorhead was led by Anthony Tucker’s 29 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

SCOUTING MSU MOORHEADThe Dragons started off 9-0 including a 5-0 start to NSIC play before a current 3-game losing streak derailed the strong start. Last weekend, MSUM was swept at Sioux Falls (70-92) and Southwest Minnesota State (68-70) and also had a one-point loss at Northern State (69-70) before the winter break.

But the Dragons have yet to lose at Alex Nemzek Hall where they are 7-0 this season with the smallest margin of victory of nine points, while hitting 100 points twice and 90-plus points four times on the home court.

The Dragons have a potent offensive attack with an 83.9 season scoring average. But they are balanced with only

two players average double-fi gures and no one above 12 points per game. Urbane Bingham, with just two starts in 12 games, leads the team at 11.8 points and Jordan Riewer is second at 11.4 points. After that, the team features eight players averaging between 5.7 and 9.1 points per game.

Riewer also leads the team with 3.5 assists per game, shoots 55.8% (24-43) from three-point range and 93.9% (31-33) at the foul line. The team’s rebounding leader is Tarell Clark with 6.9 per game, adding 9.1 points and 53.5% fi eld goal shooting.

In 12 games, seven different players have led the Dragons in scoring and six different players have led the team in re-bounding although Clark has led the team on the glass for the last fi ve contests.

SERIES HISTORY: CONCORDIA 5, NSU 24Concordia holds a 5-24 mark against the Wolves as North-ern State has won the last three meetings in the series and is 16-0 against Concordia at Wachs Arena in Aberdeen, S.D. … Kelly Boe is 3-8 against the Wolves in his eight years … Concordia’s last win over Northern State was Feb. 19, 2011 at Gangelhoff Center (81-66).

LAST YEAR: WOLVES 79, GOLDEN BEARS 73 (OT)Concordia was led by Cole Olstad’s 26 points and fi ve re-bounds including all eight overtime points for the Golden Bears but the Wolves controlled the overtime period to hand Concordia a 10th loss by 10 points or less out of 11 season losses at the time.

Concordia committed just one turnover in the fi rst half and fi ve in the second half (6 in 40 minutes) but coughed the ball up three times in the fi rst two and a half minutes of overtime.

The Golden Bears had a chance to win the game in regu-lation but Terez VanPelt’s elbow jumper rimmed out. He fi nished with 14 points, scoring 12 in the second half.

SCOUTING NORTHERN STATEUnlike the Dragons, Northern State enters the weekend hot with wins in six of its last seven contests. However, last week-end the Wolves had a fi ve game winning streak snapped in a big way with a decisive 77-43 loss at Southwest Minnesota State on Friday night. The Wolves recovered with a 96-79 road win at Sioux Falls on Saturday, though.

Northern State is also unbeaten at home this season, posting a 7-0 record at Wachs Arena in Aberdeen, S.D. but three of those games have been decided by fi ve points or less.

The Wolves average 78.6 points per game led by four play-ers in double-fi gures, all averaging under 12 points per game. Skye Warwick currently leads the club with 11.9 points per game including 48.9% three-point shooting while hitting 44 three’s in 14 contests.

Trent Zomer is the team’s top big man with 11.1 points while leading the team with 6.4 rebounds and 22 blocked shots. Also providing an inside presence is Seth Bachand with 11.4 points (58.5% FG), 4.9 rebounds and 16 blocks.

Tyden Storrusten is the top distributor with 3.1 assists per

game, adding 10.8 points.

The Wolves shoot 50.5% as a team and 40.6% from three-point range.

Six different Wolves have led the team in scoring and re-bounding in 14 games this season.

RETURNERS SPARKED STRONG FINISH IN 12-13After starting 0-10 in conference play a year ago, the Gold-en Bears rallied to win 5-straight, 6-of-7 and 7-of-10 down the stretch last season led by then sophomores Terez Van-Pelt, Cole Olstad, junior Cordell Smith and freshmen Mike Yahnke and Shea Mandli.

Additionally, current seniors Clay Olstad and Taylor Stein-bauer provide experience and depth to the mix which also upgraded with incoming transfers senior Chris Halvorsenand juniors Keith Crockett and Travon Mitchell.

VANPELT CLOSING IN ON 1,000 POINTSJunior Terez VanPelt has picked up where he left off a year ago for the Golden Bears, as he ranks second in the league in scoring (18.3). He’s scored at least 12 points in each game and is averaging 8.0 free throw attempts per contest.

He has four 20-plus point games this season, all coming during Northern Sun play as he averages 19.3 points during the NSIC season.

In his two and a half years as a Golden Bear, VanPelt has already scored 950 points with 207 assists. He is aiming to become the 16th player in program history and the seventh since Concordia joined Division II in 1999-2000 to reach the 1,000 point plateau - the fi rst since Mike Cunningham in the 2009-10 season.

He ranks fourth in program history in free throw percentage (.815), fi fth in free throws made (269), and eighth in assists (207).

More notes on VanPelt’s record breaking 2012-13 season are included on pages 4-5.

MITCHELL BRINGS INSTANT OFFENSE OFF BENCHJunior Travon Mitchell has made an immediate impact while getting big minutes off the bench and is the team’s second leading scorer with 13.1 points per game - ranking 18th in the Northern Sun. He’s also sixth in the league and leads the team with 2.0 three-pointers made per game

The transfer guard has played at least 20 minutes in every game off the bench and hit double fi gures in all but three games. He has scored at least eight points in every con-test. He’s also hit at least two three-pointers in nine out of 11 games.

Mitchell scored a season-high 21 points in 31 minutes off the bench in the Dec. 7 loss to Upper Iowa, hitting three three-pointers and grabbing fi ve rebounds.

COLE OLSTAD NOTESJunior Cole Olstad is also coming off a breakout sophomore season (like VanPelt). Last year he averaged 15.1 points, a team-high 5.0 rebounds and was second on the team with 52 assists. He topped 10 points in 20 of 26 games played, had 5-plus rebounds 16 times including a career-high 10 rebounds in an early season win over Alaska-Fairbanks.

His 30-point performance last year in a win at U-Mary was the 27th 30-plus point game in program history which has been achieved by only 14 different players.

He’s also Concordia’s top wing defender and regularly matches up with an opponent’s top scoring threat at mul-tiple positions. He was off to a solid start once again in 2013-14, averaging 12.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.2 steals. He converts at a 94.4% free throw rate (17-18).

He scored a season-high 17 points in three straight games, but had a season-low fi ve points playing through an injury against Winona State on Dec. 6 and has not played since. His status going forward has not been announced by the team.

2013-14 CU MEN’S BASKETBALL | JAN 10 @ MSU MOORHEAD | JAN 11 @ NORTHERN STATE

CORDELL SMITH: FROM GRIDIRON TO HARDWOODSenior Cordell Smith is a dynamic two-sport athlete mak-ing the transition from football to basketball for the fi nal time in his college career.

After missing the fi rst two games due to the conclusion of the football season, Smith returned in Concordia’s non-conference games against Northwood and Ferris State by averaging 10.0 points and 6.0 rebounds with a 6-1 assist-turnover ratio in 17.5 minutes per game off the bench. He had 12 points in his season debut against Northwood, also collecting seven rebounds with four assists.

The strong debut weekend for Smith propelled him into the starting lineup against Minnesota State on Nov. 30 before having his breakout weekend against WSU/UIU (Dec. 6-7) as he scored 15 and 14 points on back-to-back nights.

He’s currently third on the team with 5.3 rebounds per game and is second on the team with 42 free throw attempts where he’s a 71.4% shooter. He’s the team’s fourth leading scorer at 9.4 points per game.

Last year he avoided missing any games as he averaged a career-high 20.9 minutes per game and started the fi nal 10 games of the season with the team producing a 6-4 record with him as a starter down the stretch. In those 10 games as a starter, Smith averaged 12.7 points and 7.4 rebounds per game while fi nishing the season by averaging 7.1 points and 4.3 rebounds overall.

His breakout game last year came against Bemidji State, setting career-highs in scoring, rebounding, threes and min-utes while hitting the game-winning three with 4.4 seconds left. He hit 8 of 11 shots and 5 of 7 threes to fi nish with a double-double with 21 points and 10 boards.

As a football player, Smith is a three year starting wide re-ceiver and led the team in receiving yards (554) and touch-downs (10). In his three years as a football player, Smith has 104 catches for 1,650 yards (15.9/catch) and 20 touch-downs in 33 career games played with one year left to play.

80 IS THE MAGIC NUMBER FOR BOE’S TEAMSThe Golden Bears only topped 80 points in a game six times last season and twice so far in 2013-14, but the team also only allowed 80-plus points eight times last year and three times this year. The Bears went 4-2 in games in which they scored 80+ a year ago but are 0-2 so far this year.

Since Kelly Boe has been head coach, Concordia is 44-14 when scoring at least 80 points, 15-2 when scoring 90-plus and 8-0 when scoring 100-plus.

When allowing 80 or more points under Boe, Concordia is 8-50. They are 3-15 when allowing 90-plus and are 1-1 when allowing over 100 points.

In games where both teams score 80-plus points, they are 8-14 all-time under Boe.

2013-14’S MAGIC NUMBER - 70?While history suggests the Golden Bears’ record hinges on which team hits 80, this year Concordia has found success by keeping the game under 80.

In Concordia’s four wins, the Golden Bears have scored in the 70’s three times and 69 in the other, while holding the opponent under 70 in each victory. Concordia has yet to win a game that has reached the 80’s and only has one win when the game has been under 70.

YAHNKE EMERGES AS STARTING POSTSophomore center Mike Yahnke has started the last six games for the Golden Bears after being a starter in 16 of 26 games last year as a transfer redshirt freshman from Divi-sion I Texas Pan American.

Yahnke leads the team and is 12th in the league in rebound-ing with 6.3 per game while averaging 7.5 points per game as his range extends beyond the arc (9-29, 31.0%).

He’s developed offensive consistency, scoring between six and 10 points during all six starts with an 8.2 scoring aver-age and 6.2 rebound average as a starter.

HALVORSEN: GOLDEN GOPHER TO GOLDEN BEARWhen senior Chris Halvorsen graduated from the Univer-sity of Minnesota with a degree in biostatistics, he decided to transfer to Concordia for his fi nal year of eligibility to pur-sue an MBA degree.

He was slated into the starting lineup early on, starting 11 of his fi rst 12 games with the Golden Bears, where he brings athleticism to the team’s defense and rebounding while add-ing another inside presence.

He’s second on the team with 5.6 rebounds per game and is 14th in the league and leads the team with 1.25 steals per game.

In the season opener, he had 10 points, nine rebounds, two steals and two blocks in 31 minutes in a win over Mayville State. More recently, Halvorsen led the team with a season-high 10 rebound performance at Wayne State.

He scored 12 and 13 points in back-to-back games against Upper Iowa and at Augustana in December as well.

He was an Academic All-Big Ten student-athlete at Min-nesota as a reserve on the NCAA Tournament third round 2012-13 squad.

BIG MEN OFF THE BENCHConcordia’s big man rotation also includes an experienced reserve, fi fth year senior Taylor Steinbauer, and a true sophomore, Shea Mandli. In 2013-14, Mandli has drawn fi ve starts in the post after starting 21 out of the 25 games he played as a freshman last year.

He scored a season-high 16 points with six rebounds and three assists in a non-conference win over Waldorf College on Nov. 16. Like Yahnke, Mandli also extends beyond the arc with a 37.5% rate in eight attempts. He averages 17.4 minutes, 3.1 points and 3.6 rebounds.

Steinbauer’s role has expanded as of late, playing in the last four games after seeing action in two of the fi rst eight con-tests. He registered season-highs of four points and three rebounds in 17 minutes in a close 67-58 loss at Minnesota State on Dec. 21. He logged eight minutes in each game last weekend against UMD/SCSU as well.

KEITH CROCKETT THE COMBO GUARDJunior transfer Keith Crockett has been an immediate starter for the Golden Bears as the off-guard, although he’s shown ability to play the point as well. The versatile guard has averaged 8.1 points, 4.3 rebounds and a team-high 3.1 assists. He’s second on the team in steals (13) and three-pointers made (16).

He scored in double fi gures in three out his fi rst four games as a Golden Bear.

Crockett is coming off his top game, with 16 points, six re-bounds and six assists in a close 70-66 loss to St. Cloud State on Jan. 4. Over the last four games, he has a 16-to-4 assist-turnover ratio.

VANPELT HAD RECORD-SETTING 2012-13Junior Terez VanPelt was an All-NSIC Second Team per-former a year ago and is among just one of four returning All-NSIC players in the conference this year with all of them being Second Team selections last year. Kelly Boe has been head coach of the Golden Bears since the 2006-07 season and is now in his 10th year in the men’s basketball program entering the 2013-14 season. He has compiled a 104-101 overall record as head coach while producing a 74-76 mark in Northern Sun play.

The eighth head coach in the history of the men’s basketball program, Boe is the program’s all-time leader in winning percentage and his 104 wins rank second in school history.

Boe has led the Golden Bears to the upper tier of the Northern Sun by leading the team to host fi rst round NSIC Tournament games three times in his tenure as head coach while only missing out on the 8-team

tournament once before it moved to a 16-team fi eld in 2012-13.

In his fi rst season as head coach, Boe led the Golden Bears to their best season in school history in 2006-07 and the best season at the Division II level with a 21-8 overall record. Concordia also had its best fi nish in the NSIC with a 13-5 overall mark and a tie for third in the fi nal conference standings.

The Golden Bears posted their second 13-win NSIC campaign in the 2010-11 season while picking up a number of key road victories along the way against perennial league powers Winona State, St. Cloud State and Minnesota State among others.

Prior to being named head coach of Golden Bear basketball in the summer of 2006, Boe spent the previous two years as the top assistant coach at Concordia. In those two years, Boe assisted in guiding the Golden Bears to back-to-back winning seasons and a com-bined 34-23 record.

Boe’s background includes three successful NCAA Division II assistant coaching runs with St. Cloud State University (1997-99), Minnesota State University, Mankato (2001-03) and Concordia University (2004-06).

In between his fi rst two NCAA DII stints, Boe had a two-year stop at Madison Area Technical College, where he was an assistant for one season before taking over as head coach and guiding the squad to a Wisconsin Technical College League title in the 2000-01 season.

He started his career at St. John’s University as an assistant coach where he was able to learn under Jim Smith, who is the all-time winningest collegiate basketball coach in the state of Minnesota.

Boe has a master’s degree in sports management from St. Cloud State and a Bachelor of Science in Education/Sports Management from St. John’s University, graduating from SJU in 1996.
