The Bulldogs have never played at Sea Foam Stadium. DAY OF HEROES - PRE-GAME NOTES As part of Day of Heroes, Sea Foam Stadium will be adorned in the Stars & Stripes, with military, police and fire vehicles on display and available for the public during pre- game. The festivities begin on the field with PA announcements approximately 10-minutes before kickoff, with the introduc- tion of the honorary captains, and a moment of silence to honor the fallen soldiers killed in action from Minnesota since last year’s Military Appreciation Day. The game’s honorary captains are former running back Aaron Cawthorn (2003-06), who recently was one of 54 in the nation to earn “Top Cop” honorable mention honors. He’s joined by former linebacker Joe LaBuda (1980-83) who set the school single season sack record in his final game at South Dakota’s DakotaDome in 1983. The coin toss will feature Concordia President Tom Ries, Ramsey County Sheriff Matt Bostrom and Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton. The National Anthem will be played by the 34th Infantry Division Red Bull Band (Rose- mount, Minn.) with colors presented by the JROTC from Minnesota Transitions Charter School, General Colin L. Powell’s Leadership Academy in Minneapolis. LAST WEEK: CONCORDIA 34, UM CROOKSTON 24 Despite trailing 16-3 at the half, Concordia rallied for three unanswered touchdowns and tacked on a fourth quarter touchdown and field goal to seal a road win in windy condi- tions in Northern Minnesota. Sophomore running back Tre Spears charted a career- high with 187 yards including a 44-yard to set up a touch- down pass on the next play, and a 31-yard go-ahead touch- down in the fourth quarter. He leads the NSIC in rushing with 304 yards, averaging 6.0 per carry. Despite 3-for-10 passing for -2 yards and an interception returned for touchdown in the first half, sophomore quar- terback James Peterson was nearly perfect in the second half as he completed 9-of-10 for 129 yards and two touch- downs after the break. He also added a second half touch- down plunge from a yard out. His passing strikes went to Tre Mason (32 yards) and Cordell Smith (7 yards). Defensively, Denzell Blackmon came up with a fumble re- covery to stop a key 3rd quarter drive with CU trailing 16-10 at the time, and he intercepted a pass with Concordia lead- ing by a touchdown and returned it to the UMC 20 yard line with two minutes to play, setting up a field goal to put the Golden Bears ahead by 10-points late in the game. Zach Moore added two sacks, and Jordan Halverson had 14 tackles with 3.0 tackles for loss. Halverson earned BSN Division II Defensive Player of the Week honors as one of two linebackers selected to the nation’s all-defensive team for the week. Kicker/punter Tom Obarski had a solid day, making two field goals including a 31-yarder in the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 10 points with 2:04 to play. He booted four kickoff touchbacks including three in a row in the fourth quarter and had a 54-yard punt land inside the 20 while av- eraging 36.0 on three punts overall. Obarski’s performance earned NSIC Special Teams Player of the Week honros. SERIES NOTES: CONCORDIA VS. GOLDEN BEARS HOST #2 BULLDOGSConcordia takes on the number-two team in the country as part of Day of Heroes on Saturday evening with a 6 p.m. kickoff as Minnesota Duluth comes to St. Paul for the fi rst time since 2008. The Bulldogs have never played at Sea Foam Stadium.

DAY OF HEROES - PRE-GAME NOTESAs part of Day of Heroes, Sea Foam Stadium will be adorned in the Stars & Stripes, with military, police and fi re vehicles on display and available for the public during pre-game.

The festivities begin on the fi eld with PA announcements approximately 10-minutes before kickoff, with the introduc-tion of the honorary captains, and a moment of silence to honor the fallen soldiers killed in action from Minnesota since last year’s Military Appreciation Day.

The game’s honorary captains are former running back Aaron Cawthorn (2003-06), who recently was one of 54 in the nation to earn “Top Cop” honorable mention honors. He’s joined by former linebacker Joe LaBuda (1980-83) who set the school single season sack record in his fi nal game at South Dakota’s DakotaDome in 1983.

The coin toss will feature Concordia President Tom Ries, Ramsey County Sheriff Matt Bostrom and Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton. The National Anthem will be played by the 34th Infantry Division Red Bull Band (Rose-mount, Minn.) with colors presented by the JROTC from Minnesota Transitions Charter School, General Colin L. Powell’s Leadership Academy in Minneapolis.

LAST WEEK: CONCORDIA 34, UM CROOKSTON 24Despite trailing 16-3 at the half, Concordia rallied for three unanswered touchdowns and tacked on a fourth quarter touchdown and fi eld goal to seal a road win in windy condi-tions in Northern Minnesota.

Sophomore running back Tre Spears charted a career-high with 187 yards including a 44-yard to set up a touch-down pass on the next play, and a 31-yard go-ahead touch-down in the fourth quarter. He leads the NSIC in rushing with 304 yards, averaging 6.0 per carry.

Despite 3-for-10 passing for -2 yards and an interception returned for touchdown in the fi rst half, sophomore quar-terback James Peterson was nearly perfect in the second half as he completed 9-of-10 for 129 yards and two touch-downs after the break. He also added a second half touch-down plunge from a yard out. His passing strikes went to Tre Mason (32 yards) and Cordell Smith (7 yards).

Defensively, Denzell Blackmon came up with a fumble re-covery to stop a key 3rd quarter drive with CU trailing 16-10 at the time, and he intercepted a pass with Concordia lead-ing by a touchdown and returned it to the UMC 20 yard line with two minutes to play, setting up a fi eld goal to put the Golden Bears ahead by 10-points late in the game.

Zach Moore added two sacks, and Jordan Halverson had 14 tackles with 3.0 tackles for loss. Halverson earned BSN Division II Defensive Player of the Week honors as one of two linebackers selected to the nation’s all-defensive team for the week.

Kicker/punter Tom Obarski had a solid day, making two fi eld goals including a 31-yarder in the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 10 points with 2:04 to play. He booted four kickoff touchbacks including three in a row in the fourth quarter and had a 54-yard punt land inside the 20 while av-eraging 36.0 on three punts overall. Obarski’s performance earned NSIC Special Teams Player of the Week honros.

luth, Minn. in 2000 ... Concordia would also win 38-6 at Griffi n Stadium over the Bulldogs in 2004 ... UMD has never played at Sea Foam Stadium and last visited St. Paul in 2008 in their fi rst NCAA Championship season, defeating Concordia 40-0 in the season opener at Griffi n Stadium ... the two teams met again in the 2009 opener in Duluth, with UMD winning 56-0 ... Concordia has not been shutout in 35 games since ... in UMD’s shutout win over Concordia in 2008, the Bulldogs snapped Concordia’s run of 90-straight games without be-ing shutout, dating back to 1999 when they were blanked by Southwest (Minnesota) State 44-0 in CU’s fi rst year of Divi-sion II football ... the Golden Bears have not scored against UMD since 2005 on a 24-yard fi eld goal by Brody Johnson, and have not scored a touchdown against the Bulldogs since Tyrone Ruffi n’s 2005 3rd quarter 5-yard TD reception from James McNear.

LAST MEETING IN 2009: UMD 56, CONCORDIA 0The Bulldogs blanked the Golden Bears for the second straight meeting in their last matchup which was played at Malosky Stadium in Duluth, Minn. UMD scored two touch-downs in every quarter against Concordia, with their fi rst fi ve touchdowns all being Isaac Odim scores, the fi rst three via the run, the fourth through the air and the fi fth on a 92-yard kick return. Four of his touchdowns came from dis-tance of at least 42-yards.

Brian Hanson scored two on the ground and Nate Bauer punched in the fi nal score rushing as well. The last three touchdowns were all short, from 4-yards or closer.

Odim fi nished with 187 yards on 12 carries and 75 receiv-ing yards on three catches. He’d fi nish with 354 all-purpose yards in the game. Hanson had 144 rushing yards on 13 attempts. UMD rushed for 461 yards and fi ve TD’s in the game as a team.

Concordia quarterback Spencer Ohm completed 12-of-34 for 93 yards including a long of 33 to Jordan Schultenover who had two catches for 41 yards. Sam Campbell had fi ve catches for 30 yards and rushed for 14 on six carries. Jerry Shaw led the ground game with 23 yards on eight rushes.

Concordia had 135 yards of total offense to UMD’s 634, and managed eight fi rst downs to UMD’s 28. The Golden Bears converted just 1-of-15 on third down.

Punter TG Schoenberg averaged a solid 43.9 yards on nine punts with four inside the 20 and a long of 60, but he also missed a pair of fi eld goals from 44 and 42 yards out.

MEET YOUR CAPTAINSThe 2012 Golden Bears voted on their team captains, se-lecting players from three different classes: senior Tre Ma-son (League City, Texas), juniors Zach Moore (Chicago) and Mike Willett (Woodbury, Minn.) and sophomore James Peterson (Blaine, Minn.). The three underclassmen are all in their fourth year in the program.

RETURN OF THE ZACH: ‘SACK’ MOOREOne of the nation’s top pass rushers as a true sophomore in 2010, Zach Moore sat out 2011 as a redshirt and worked with the scout team. Going up against All-America left tackle Tyler Hendrickson did him well.

Now at 6-6, 282, Moore is a complete defensive lineman still capable of pressuring the quarterback but also adept at stopping the run. He’s also emerged as a team leader as evidenced by being voted team captain as an underclass-men during the spring season.

He’s a preseason All-American and one of 32 non-FCS de-fensive players in the country on the Defensive Player of the Year Preseason Watch List. He had 10 sacks in as many games in 2010 as a sophomore.

In two games, Moore has three sacks including a two-sack effort last week at UM Crookston. He leads the defensive line with eight tackles and is second on the team overall with 3.5 tackles for loss.

CAMPBELL PROVIDES POWER IN THE MIDDLEThe aforementioned Moore will be aided on the defensive

line by junior nose guard Chris Campbell, an All-NSIC South Division Second Team performer a year ago. Camp-bell brings size and strength up the middle to provide a hard-to-stop duo with Moore. In week one, Campbell dis-rupted the backfi eld with a career-high 2.0 tackles for loss against U-Mary.

MR. 300: JAMES PETERSONIn just four career starts, sophomore quarterback James Peterson has thrown for 300-plus yards three times includ-ing a career-high 431 yards in week one against U-Mary. JAMES PETERSON NOTESIn week one, sophomore James Peterson overcame four interceptions to produce one of the top statistical games on record for the Golden Bears. His 431 passing yards were the third most in a single game in school history, his 30 completions were just one shy of the single-game record, and his 457 yards of total offense ranked fourth for a single game effort.

Just 14 games (and fi ve starts) into his career, Peterson has passed for 1,441 yards, nine touchdowns and has com-pleted nearly 60% of his passes with a 143.1 effi ciency rat-ing which is higher than Spencer Ohm, Kole Goodchild and James McNear. He has also rushed for 308 yards and four touchdowns.

SPEARS EARLY NSIC RUSHING LEADERMaking his fi rst career start and playing in his fi rst game since 2010, sophomore Tre Spears rushed for 117 yards on 26 carries in week one against U-Mary. With a long run of just 13, Spears’ average of 4.5 per carry was a steady pace.

He broke out further in week two with a new career-high in back-to-back weeks with 187 yards on 25 carries including a go-ahead 31 yard score in the fourth quarter in a win at UM-Crookston.

His 304 yards through two games are 43 more than the sec-ond place rusher in the league (Richard Haley, UMC).

As a true freshman in 2010, Spears spent time as Concor-dia’s fullback and third rushing option, getting 21 carries for 67 yards and a touchdown as a rookie. He used his red-shirt season in 2011 while recovering from injury and had a productive spring season and offseason to earn the starting running back position.

THIENES A POWERFUL TIGHT END TARGETA preseason All-America candidate, senior Nate Thienesshowed exactly why in week one. Bulked up with a powerful 6-5, 275-pound frame, Thienes punished defensive backs and linebackers in the 2012 opener with career-highs eight catches, 116 yards and longs of 34 and 51 yards - his lon-gest two catches to date.

He’s tied for the team lead with 11 receptions and is second with 141 yards, averaging 12.8 per catch.

He was an All-NSIC South Division Second Team tight end last year as a junior.

DEEP TARGETS: SMITH AND MASONThe 2012 season appears to be like every other year on re-cord for Concordia football, dating back to the 1970’s with Joel Schuldheisz and Tyrone Strickland; the 1980’s and into the 90’s with Joe Langevin and the 2000’s with Joe and Joseph Mapson, Wesley Hill, Tyrone Ruffi n, Antwon Wil-liams, Calvin Simon and most recently Charles Gilbert.

In 2012, the outside targets are led by senior Tre Mason and sophomore Cordell Smith. The duo provided a lethal three-deep threat in 2011 combined with Charles Gilbert and are now ready to be the primary passing threats in 2012.

In week one, it was Smith who burst out with career-highs eight catches, 147 yards and a touchdown. It was his second

ABOUT THE BULLDOGSUMD enters 2012 as a perennial DII power, start-ing in 2008 with a 40-0 shutout at Concordia in the fi rst of two NCAA Championship seasons. They are aiming for tying the NSIC record of 5-straight league titles. They are led by 10th year head coach Bob Nielson, also the athletic director at UMD.

UMD has won 30 of their last 32 road games, both losses coming last year (at Wayne State & St. Cloud State).

The Bulldogs are off to a strong 2-0 start in 2012, with a 45-20 road win at SMSU and a 38-16 home win over Winona State.

They lead the league and are 14th in the nation with 262.5 rushing yards per game, led by sopho-more Austin Sikorski with 170 yards including 113 last week against Winona State. In the opener at SMSU, redshirt freshman Logan Lauters had 104 yards off the bench. Their top three backs, includ-ing Brian Lucas, average 6.8 per carry as trio.

Chase Vogler directs the offense and is 38-4 as a starting quarterback. He ranks 3rd in UMD history in passing yards (5,627) and total offense (7,673). His 2,046 yards are a UMD QB record. His 236 yards in the 2012 opener at SMSU were a career-high. His top target is Zach Zweifel with 8-106.

Their non-statistical hero is left guard Garth Heik-kinen, an All-American offensive lineman.

Cameron Harper, a safety, ranks 14th on UMD’s all-time tackles list with 220.

career 100-yard game. Mason added three catches for 41 yards in the opener and two catches for 54 yards in week two including a 32-yard touchdown. As a duo, they’ve combined for 285 yards and three touchdowns thus far, averaging 17.8 yards per catch to stretch the defense.

OFFENSIVE LINE: MUSCLE COMES FROM THE RIGHTConcordia’s offensive line brings back just one starter from the 2011 team: junior right tackle Steven Davis. While play-ing with upperclassmen in each of his fi rst two years on the line, Davis’ contributions were the most overlooked as he quietly dominated. He has yet to allow a sack in his career and last year was the top graded offensive lineman with a 92.1% for the year in over 700 snaps.

In his 2012 season debut, Davis graded out at a predictable 92.0%, and backed it up with a 96.0% grade in week two at UM Crookston. He leads the team with a 93.5% season percentage through two games. He’s joined on the right side by right guard Zack Sieber who returns to the team after a year away from the team in 2011. A key rotation lineman in 2010, Sieber provides a force on the interior and brings a veteran presence with Davis that is necessary in helping bring the continuity up front together. He brought the attitude in week one by leading the offensive line with 10 fi nishes up front while grading out at 80.0% in his return to the lineup. His 13 fi nishes through two games are more than the rest of the offensive line combined (10).

The starting lineup is bolstered by a pair of junior college transfers, center Bryan Gates and left guard Demetrius Beaver. Gates led the team with nine cuts in week one and has more on the season (9) than the rest of the line combined (6). Beaver provides versatility, and has already covered multiple positions up front.

The left tackle spot is manned by redshirt freshman Isiah Cage who has gone through two fall camps, a season on the scout team facing the 2011 starting defensive line, and a productive spring season. The young left tackle has yet to allow a sack this year and improved his grade by 13% from his debut to his second game.

Veteran returners Joe Widman, Zach Elliott and Moses Huerta provide depth and experience on the interior, and as a tandem are able to back-up at all fi ve positions.

The Next Wave: After losing fi ve senior offensive linemen that all produced in the rotation a year ago, the Golden Bears brought in a group of talented, physical freshmen but all are expected t redshirt. The group includes Matt Pulizos, Brett Morris, Austin Jones and Cole Parker.

FAMILIAR FACES TEAM-UP WITH RECRUITSThe Golden Bears are faced with losing a 5,000-yard career passer, 1,000-yard rusher, 1,000-yard receiver, four start-ing offensive linemen, one of their all-time tackles leaders and their top impact defender in terms of tackles for loss a year ago.

Most teams replace gaping holes left by experienced se-niors by bringing in a stable of junior college players and supplementing them with fi rst-year starters from the scout team. While Concordia has had a successful history of do-ing exactly that, and has done it again this year, the Golden Bears will also be bolstering their 2012 lineup by bringing players back from the past, each with unique circumstances.

On offense, quarterback James Peterson and running back Tre Spears return from seasons marred by injury, while wide receiver Paah Zeah and right guard Zack Sieber

Ryan Williams was named the 10th head coach of Concordia football on a permanent ba-sis in December of 2011 after serving the 2011 season as interim head coach.

The 2001 graduate of North Dakota State became the 10th head coach in Concordia foot-ball history and will continue to lead the offensive side of the football and work with the quarterbacks.

6-YEAR GOLDEN BEAR OF-FENSIVE COORDINATORPrior to being named head coach, Williams served six seasons as offensive coordi-nator and quarterbacks coach as well as recruiting coordina-tor.

In his fi rst season as head coach, Williams led the Golden Bears to their second-straight winning season, fi nishing 6-5 overall while reaching the .500 mark in league play. The team won their fi nal three games and four of their last fi ve to post the winning campaign.

As the offensive coordinator, Williams presided over some of the highest powered offenses in school history and

coached in a pair of Mineral Water Bowl games.

As the quarterbacks coach for the Golden Bears, Williams has coached three record breaking, All-NSIC QB’s in James McNear (2005), Kole Goodchild (2005-07) and Spencer Ohm (2007-11).

EDUCATION BACKGROUNDHe earned his degree from NDSU in speech communica-tions and also earned a minor in business. At Concordia, he added to his academic profi le with a master’s in orga-nizational management in 2007. He also completed an internship with the Minnesota Vikings’ public relations de-partment, assisting with the draft, working with mini camp preparation as well as updating player bio’s.

PRIOR TO CONCORDIA CAREERPrior to joining the Concordia football staff for the 2005 sea-son, he worked as the quarterbacks and receivers coach at the University of Wisconsin-Stout for a season after his fi rst coaching job at his hometown Wayzata High School from 2001 to 2003, also working with the QB’s and WR’s.

PLAYING DAYSAs a student-athlete, Williams was a two year starting quar-terback for former Division II power NDSU in Fargo, N.D. He was a co-captain as a senior for the Bison in 2000 before moving on to a three-team professional career in the Cana-dian Football League and National Indoor Football League. He played for a pair of CFL teams, the Calgary Stamped-ers and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers before playing with the Sioux Falls Storm in the NIFL.

PERSONALRyan currently resides in St. Michael, Minn. with his wife, Aleasha, and their son, Colton.

return to the team after a year away. On defense, up front Zach Moore comes back from a redshirt season, defensive back Denzell Blackmon started the fi rst four games of 2011 but did not play again, and cornerback Jimmy Mireri is ready for his redshirt freshman season after a year away from the program. That’s fi ve starters and a pair of key role players who return to the mix to further the team’s depth and competitiveness in 2012.

TURNOVERS MATTER!It might be a cliche’ but often times turnovers can correlate to wins and losses, especially when added up over time. The Golden Bears lost the turnover margin in week one, and dropped the game by just one score in the process, but they forced a pair of second half turnovers in a 10-point win on the road in week two. Below is a game-by-game breakdown of 2012:Opp Score Give-Take Season TotalU-Mary L, 26-32 5-3 5-3@crookston W, 34-24 1-2 6-5

INSIDE LINEBACKERS: SESSON & HALVERSONThe Golden Bear linebackers are led by junior Chris Ses-son and sophomore Jordan Halverson. They’ve been im-pact players thus far, with Halverson reaching 10-plus tackles and 3.0 tackles for loss in each game. He’s currently fi fth in the NSIC with 24 tackles and second with 6.0 TFL’s. Sesson, meanwhile, is second on the team with 15 tackles and ranks 22nd in the conference overall. He’s also forced a fumble, has a tackle for loss and three hurries.

Halverson earned BSN Division II Defensive Player of the Week honors, one of just two linebackers in the nation se-lected. He had 14 tackles, 3.0 for loss in a road win at UM Crookston to earn the honors.

JAY-MO AND RANDLE AT THE CORNERSConcordia’s cornerbacks are led by junior Jay Moten and senior Jeremy Randle. In week one, Moten had an intercep-tion and a pair of pass breakups including out-leaping 6-4 touchdown machine Tyler Steffen to bat away a fade pass in the end zone. He added 10 tackles in week two.

Randle, meanwhile, tallied seven tackles and had a pair of pass breakups as well in the opener while adding two more breakups in week two.

Both players have also had extensive experience as kick/punt returners in their careers, and are converted offensive skill players. Randle was recruited as a running back, while Moten came to Concordia as a wide receiver.

DEPTH AT THE SAFETY POSITIONConcordia’s safeties are led by juniors Denzell Blackmon and Mike Willett, sophomore Abdullah Asad and breakout candidate freshman Josh Trifunov.

Blackmon and Asad lead the group with 11 tackles. Asad adds a tackle for loss while Blackmon has a half TFL, and had an interception and fumble recovery to help seal week two’s road win at UMC. He also forced a pair of fumbles in the opener.

Willett, a team captain, has missed the fi rst two games due to injury.=

The surprise of the group was Trifunov, the true freshman who had seven tackles including 3.0 for loss in his debut performance against U-Mary. He has 10 total tackles in two games.

OBARSKI MAKES KICKING GAME A WEAPONSophomore kicker/punter Tom Obarski opened his colle-giate career last season by drilling a 56-yard, school record fi eld goal in a season opening road win at Minot State. He earned NSIC and D2Football.com Special Teams Player of the Week honors for his debut and continued the success all season.

He made three of the longest four kicks in school history, and was 8-of-9 on fi eld goals inside of 50 yards, 9-of-12 overall and perfect inside 40 yards as a freshman.

As a sophomore, Obarski entered the season on the 2012 Fred Mitchell Award Preseason Watch List, an award that recognizes outstanding kicking performance as well as ex-cellent academics and community service by college foot-ball kickers; and he earned NSIC Special Teams Player of the Week in a week two win at UM Crookston.

In week one, he had a career-best 42.0 single-game punt average on four punts against U-Mary. In a week two win at UM Crookston, he had a pair of fi eld goals, four kickoff touchbacks and a season-long 54-yard punt inside the 20 to earn league player of the week honors.

CU CARRIES MOMENTUM INTO 2012 SEASONAfter back-to-back winning seasons and two years removed from the program’s third Mineral Water Bowl appearance, the Concordia football team came into the 2012 campaign with momentum after winning three straight games to end the 2011 season including wins in four of their last fi ve games to secure a 6-5 overall record while fi nishing 5-5 in the NSIC and 3-3 in the NSIC South.

A LITTLE CU HISTORY LESSONConcordia is in their 43rd season of football, holding a 197-216-2 all-time record dating back to 1969. The Gold-en Bears have won nine conference championships, two coming in the Northern Sun since joining the NSIC in 1999. Concordia is 0-3 all-time in postseason contests, dropping to MIAA opponents Missouri Western in the 2003 and 2005 Mineral Water Bowl games and Pittsburg State in the 2010 bowl game.

Since moving to Division II in 1999, Concordia is 81-65 overall and 63-52 in the Northern Sun.
