INTRODUCTION TO THE UNIVERSITY
Chung-Ang University is a private institution, which enrolls 30,000 students within 13
colleges and 17 graduate schools on two campuses in Seoul and the nearby suburb of
Anseong in Korea.

REQUIREMENTS FOR DEGREE
Master’s Program
The master’s program consists of a series of
lectures, seminars and research for a thesis.
To complete the program and to be awarded
the Master’s degree, students must fulfill
the following requirements under the
supervision of an academic advisor: (i) 2
years of enrollment, (ii) completion of 30 or
more academic credits, plus (iii) 2 credits
from ‘Studies in major fields’ subject. In
addition, it is required to (iv) pass the
comprehensive qualifying exam, (v) to submit
a master’s thesis, and pass the (vi) Korean
and (vii) English language test. The
conditions (vi) and (vii) can be waived if a
student has completed more than 4 courses
conducted in English. In regards to (i),
however, students who meet conditions
based on the regulation of the Graduate
School may complete the program in less
than the stipulated period if approved.
Doctoral Program
The doctoral program focuses more on
research compared to the master’s
program. To complete the program and to
be awarded the Doctorate: (i) 2 years of
enrollment, (ii) completion of 60 or more
academic credits, including (iii) maximum of
30 credits from master’s credits, plus (iv) 4
credits from ‘Studies in major fields’ subject.
In addition, it is required to (v) pass the
comprehensive qualifying examination, to (vi)
submit a doctoral thesis, and pass (vii) the
Korean and (viii) English language test. The
conditions (vi) and (vii) can be waived if a
student has completed more than four
courses conducted in English. In regard to
(i), however, students who meet conditions
based on the regulation of the Graduate
School may complete the program in less
than the stipulated period if approved.
M.A./PH.D. JOINT PROGRAM
This program is designed to provide graduate a
students with a seamless process from M.A. to Ph.D.,
which allows a more efficient and flexible schedule for
academic accomplishment. Through this program,
students, including international students, are expected
to finish their course work within three years.

CAYSS Program
The Chung-Ang University Young Scientist Scholarship (CAYSS)
Program is newly launched graduate program in the Graduate
School, Chung-Ang University in 2009. It aims to pick out
engineering and science majoring students with outstanding
academic potential and nurture them in Korea, utilizing the latest
technology to aid their development. The CAYSS program offers
courses in English for international students who are eager to
obtain master’s and doctoral degrees from the Graduate School. It
also aims the goal to educate Korean students to exert their
abilities as internationally-active, professional scientists.
Students in this special program will enjoy full tuition fee waivers
for four semesters and additional scholarships from their
professors.
The CAYSS program will attract attention from students as it
provides ‘work ready’ skills, and financial support is available. Due
to close collaboration with research institutes and industry,
Students can experience world-leading research at the Graduate
School of Chung-Ang University. Prospective students will have
excellent opportunities to study modern science and conduct
cutting-edge research with top-level scientists currently working

CONDITIONS FOR THE CAYSS RECIPIENTS
A) Admissions Requirement :
International students majoring in natural science, engineering, pharmacy and medicine
must meet the university admission criteria and must have their application approved by
approved by one of the CAU full-time faculty members.
B) Conditions of Benefit :
•Maintain a minimum GPA 3.0/4.5 and above
•Get a recommendation letter on a semester basis
C) Duration :
Four semesters for Master's or doctoral courses ; This does not include periods of
temporary leave of absence
D) Requirements for Graduation :
Master : An article must be submitted to JCR by him/herself or in collaboration with the
student's academic advisor before graduation, and must be published within 1 year of
graduation(including confirmation of publication).
Doctor : An article must be published in JCR by him/herself as a first or a corresponding
author(including confirmation of publication). This must be a separate article the
graduation thesis.
Masters & Ph.D. joint program : two articles must be submitted to JCR before the
graduation and the other conditions are the same with above.

Accommodation Conditions
Due to a lack of campus dormitories on the Seoul Campus, the university does not provide
assistance in finding rooms or accommodation to graduate students. However, if any rooms
are available, CAYSS students will be given priority. No accommodation fee support is
available in this case, and as there is no family accommodation in the campus dormitories,
students with families must find their own off-campus accommodation.

Insurance
Health Insurance is required for all international students attending Chung-Ang University.
If they do not carry a proper accident and health insurance policy whose benefits match or
exceed 10,000USD respectively, they must purchase an insurance policy in Korea.
The International Center recommends an insurance policy with a very reasonable price to
international students. If students purchase a policy in Korea, medical costs can be
indemnified within a week by submitting relevant documents to an insurance company.
Insurance becomes valid upon paying the fee and submitting the appropriate forms (from
the International Center) to the insurance company. Insurance plans are normally 60-80USD
for four months and 100-140USD for ten months. You can purchase the policy through the
International Center after your arrival.
Housing
International HouseThe student dormitory which opened in Fall 2014 and the new dormitory that opened in Spring
2015 can house up to 2166 students in double rooms. The dormitory is available to
undergraduate, graduate, and international students. Both Korean and international students
live in the dormitory to provide an international atmosphere. The Monthly rent is around
$300USD for a room with four beds and $350USD for a room with two beds. The price includes
meal coupons.
Off campus HousingAlternatives to the dormitory include many boarding houses in the vicinity for the true
Korean student experience. Surrounding the University, rent at a boarding house may vary
between 300,000KRW and 550,000KRW a month. It is easy to access the University from
anywhere in Seoul because Chung-Ang University is located in the heart of the city.

MY EXPERIENCE AT CAUFrom some of the Graudates of Chung-Ang University
I felt really lucky to become a Master student in the field of highway and traffic engineering
in Chung-Ang University over a two-year period supported by the Vietnamese Government
911 program scholarship . It was wonderful that I had great opportunities to enjoy the best
life in Seoul and the dynamically qualified academic environment. All my great experiences
from CAU's life and my research achievement with three conference papers and an
international journal (ASCE) for HEART laboratory, helps me currently work well as a

I became a member of the CAU community in the fall of 2011 and graduated on August 23,
2013 as a Master of Mechanical Engineering at the Graduate School of Chung-Ang
University under CAYSS program. As an international student, a university’s overall social
environment, academic standing, and location are important to me when deciding where

CAYSS Admissions
Step1 Find faculty members in the field of your interest as candidates
for your supervisor. Applications will not be accepted without the
consent of at least one faculty member as a prospective supervisor. The
prospective supervisor should be a professor, associate professor,
assistant professor or full time lecturer of the Graduate School at
Chung-Ang University.
Step2 Contact the faculty members directly via email to obtain consent
of acceptance.
To contact the faculty members, it is strongly advisable to:
•gather information about the faculty members and their field of
research in advance by looking at their publications, research papers,
and personal websites.
•include “CAYSS” in the subject line of the email.
•provide as much of your academic background and application information as possible.
•provide the names of other faculty members if contacting more than one at the same time.
•provide the name of your current or latest supervisor as a reference.
Step3 Prepare the required documents for application if the professor you have contacted is
willing to recommend you as a CAYSS applicant. The professor must send us notice on
CAYSS acceptance directly to [email protected] All the documents are the same with
general admission guide except the fact you need to enclose pledge of CAYSS recipients and
do NOT need to enclose the statement of financial resources. Apply on-line. If it is not the
general application period, please use the CAYSS application form provided on top of this
page. Exclusive Waivers of application fee of $100 are applied to the CAYSS applicants.
Step4 Send the application documents to the Office of International Affairs(OIA), Chung-Ang
University after applying on-line during general application periods. All the application
documents, including application form, should be enclosed together, sent via airmail, and
received by the OIA of Chung-Ang University by the same deadline as general admissions.
Step5 The Committee for CAYSS will carry out preliminary selection based on scholastic
aptitude according to documents submitted and contact the applicants for further evaluation
in May or in November depending on intended entrance term.
