New Reading Books!

Our school and the P&F have recently purchased some new reading books. We would love volunteers to help cover all our new resources. If you would like to help cover the books, please see Miss Emily Richards in the library.

Thank you!

Kindy Term Four is going to be filled with fun and excitement as we extend our skills that we have learnt throughout the year and become prepared for Pre-Primary!

We are continuing to focus on a story each week and will be making lots of wonderful creations relating to these texts, exploring different mediums and also Christmas craft.

Our focus points are: • Speaking in short sentences, news telling and

narrative retell skills. • Learning the sound of the letters

S,A,T,P,I,N,M,R,C,H,E,D,K,F,L,O,B,U,G • Beginning to sound out three letter words with the

letters above. • Awareness of print concepts. • Exploring the mathematics concepts of money,

numbers, counting, ordering, addition, subtraction, sharing, fractions, graphs, patterns, subitising and using calculators.

• Making Jesus Real in our lives and learning about the Church, families, Catholic life and the Christmas story.

• Developing our fine and gross motor skills.

News telling/ Sound Development During the literacy rotation activity time each week Kindy children will continue with news telling.

At the beginning of the week we ask that Kindy children continue to bring in one item (with their name marked on it) that begins with the letter/sound of the week.

An outline for the letter/sound is as follows:

Week Letter/sound 2 Letter H items. 3 Letter E items. 4 Letter D items. 5 Letter F items. 6 Letter L items. 7 Letter O items. 8 Letter B items.

The focus of your child’s news telling is to describe the object. Children need to provide pieces of information about their object including its colour, shape, size and parts, along with the greeting and thank you.

When practicing news encourage your child to use full sentences rather than just one word when providing information about the item.

Kindy Con’t

Parent Roster

Thank you for all support with parent roster last term. We really appreciate having parents in our classrooms. Our parent roster is from 9:00am to 11:45am. The first forty minutes involves our literacy groups. These activities are essential for your child’s language development and readiness for Pre-Primary. To ensure smooth operation of our groups, it is very helpful to have parent helpers, so if you can only stay for these rotations please still place your name down on the roster. It is okay to leave early if you need to.

We look forward to another wonderful term with you and your child.

Page 4: Catholic Primary School - Mater Christi College

Pre Primary What a busy and exciting term we are going to have in Pre-Primary!

Our theme for the first half of Term Four is ‘Jungle Animals’ We have many exciting activities planned and our learning will culminate in a visit to the Zoo to observe the animals in their habitats.

In addition to this we will look forward to revising and consolidating our learning as we work towards becoming independent readers and writers.

In the last few weeks of term we will enjoy many and varied activities based on Christmas.

In Religion we will discuss the Christmas story and the reasons why God chose to send Jesus to earth. We will conclude the year by transitioning the children into their new Year One classes and then in celebration of our year together we will have a fun ‘Big Day Out’ at Chipmunks indoor playground!

Drama

This Term in Drama the students will prepare for the end of year concert. Each year level will go through the process of a rehearsal schedule. Learning choreography, practising, collaborating as a group and putting the song and dance routine together for a performance as a whole school.

Both Junior and Senior students will also be given the opportunity to further develop their Creativity with the focus on Process Drama. Where groups of students collaborate within role-play situations to explore and express ideas with the use of props and materials.

Making Jesus Real

With the beginning of this last term for 2016, the importance of reflection is encouraged as we keep our focus on the important question - Where was Jesus in my Life today?

The students are taught about the importance of including people, about

body language, eye contact and the importance of forgiveness and gratitude. With a welcoming attitude and the willingness to say sorry and thank you our students and teachers Make Jesus Real at Mater Christi.

Our Focus - Social Decision Making

Developing social decision-making skills helps us to consider the consequences of our actions for ourselves and others and helps us to make thoughtful, effective decisions. This involves:

• Understanding how a social situation makes us feel

• Considering the different choices, along with the positive and negative consequences of these actions, when making a decision

• Making positive choices, while considering how these choices may affect ourselves and others

Through explicit teaching and role play the children will be learning how to respond safely as a bystander in a bullying situation.

The students are learning that to support someone when you see bullying happening has two benefits;

1. It helps the person being bullied

2. It sends a clear message to the person engaging in bullying behaviour that this behaviour is not tolerated in our school.

PE

Term four is a short one but we are going to pack a lot of things into it. The students will get to try their hands at a number of different sports. The senior students will be partaking in some cricket, netball and potentially some European handball. The ankle biters (juniors) will get to play some cricket, basketball and a variety of movement games.

At an Interschool level the school will be participating in two carnivals namely the Athletics and Cricket Carnivals. Training has already commenced for the Interschool Athletics and the students are raring to go.

Year One Welcome back to Term Four! The children had a great start to the term. We can’t believe how far they have come since the beginning of the year, we are very proud! This term we are looking forward to our incursion in Week Six and our Big Day Out towards the end of the term. Advent is always an exciting time of the year as we prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus. The Units of Work we will be covering in Religious Education this term are: Loving Others, Just Imagine and Prepare. In literacy we will continue to explore a range of text types including fiction, non-fiction, procedural and persuasive texts. We will keep practising our reading and comprehension skills. In writing we are working on our sentence structure, using punctuation effectively and applying our knowledge of spelling sounds and sight words. In numeracy we are focusing on statistics and probability and building on the number of mental strategies we can use to solve addition and subtraction problems. We will alsorevise the various concepts taught throughout the year. Let’s finish the year strong!

Year Two Welcome back to our fourth and final term together, I can't believe we are here already! This term promises to be an exciting one as the warm weather makes it all that much easier to get up in the morning. We will be going on an excursion to the Zoo and Big Day Out promises to be a great day for all :) This term we will be learning about: Religious Education- Empowered to Love (Confirmation) and Truth of the Gospel (Advent/Christmas) Literacy - Exposition and persuasive writing and reading comprehension strategies Numeracy - Mass, chance and data, and number and operations revision Inquiry - Our nation and the Noongar culture

Year Three The term ahead is definitely a busy one for the Year threes. We begin the term with final preparations for the Sacrament of Reconciliation and then we move into our final units of work for the year, Gathered As One (Church) and Gifted By The Word (Advent/Lent). During Literacy we will tackle both Poetry and Myth, Legends and Fables with the students. Our Numeracy program sees us continue to focus on number and place value with students revising and consolidating concepts such as addition, time, subtraction, multiplication and division. Our HASS program takes us back to in time as we explore the past and present. In Health we will be focusing Protective Behaviours. We are looking forward to a fantastic term in Year Three.

Year Four It’s the home stretch! Term Four sees our amazing students round out their final nine weeks before the long break; however, there is little respite as this term shapes up to be absolutely jam-packed! In Religious Education, students explore their conscience and how their inner voice affects how they act. They also learn about advent in the lead up to our Christmas celebrations. In Mathematics we take a close look at Capacity, Mass and Temperature, as well as Statistics and Probability. Later, we delve into Angles and Mapping and finish the term with some Word Problems and Patterns. In Writing, Students will work to create persuasive texts, developing tools to effectively argue their opinion on a range of topics. In Reading, we take a look at a variety of texts to consolidate the reading comprehension strategies taught throughout the year. HASS sees students investigating the effects of European Settlement on Indigenous Australians, culminating in an exciting opportunity to create some 3-D art made from recycled materials. In Health, our school counsellor, Rebecca Rowland is working through the Highway Heroes program with students to help build resilience and be stronger, more confident people. This Term is set to be a cracker and we can’t wait to see what the students achieve!

National Assessment Program-Civics and Citizenship (NAP-CC) This year, a sample of Year Six and Year Ten students from across Australia will take part in a national online sample assessment in Civics and Citizenship. The NAP–CC sample assessment supports the goal of Australian schooling that students become active and informed citizens. In doing this, the assessment collects information about students’ civics and citizenship-related knowledge and understanding, attitudes, beliefs and behaviours. The purpose of the online assessment is to inform schools, education ministers and the community about the levels of student achievement in civics and citizenship education among Year Six and Year Ten students across Australia. As one of the nominated schools across Australia, 20 students from our Year Six classes have been randomly selected to take part in this assessment. If your child is selected to take part, he or she will participate in a world-class assessment designed by education experts in civics and citizenship. The online assessment, scheduled for Monday 24th October, is not a reportable assessment within our own school reports, and as such any last minute preparation is unnecessary. If you have any questions about the NAP–CC sample assessment please feel free to contact me, alternatively further information is available at www.nap.edu.au

Thank you Nicole Cloutt Acting Assistant Principal Admin

Year Six Term Four is tipped to be our busiest yet. There is a lot going on and there won't be any time to take it easy. We have hit the ground running at our final athletics carnival and we are already preparing for our graduation with weekly dance lessons.

In Religious Education we are enjoying participating in Parish Masses, as we deepen our understanding of prayer. We are also looking forward to the season of Advent which is rapidly approaching.

In our Numeracy Dedicated Time, we are rolling the dice, taking a chance and recording the data! Human calculator status is near, as we put our decimal knowledge into practice, converting a variety of metric units of measurement. Deep down in the dark alley of doom...we hope to thrill you with our short story narratives. Gruesome, gory and ever so frightening.

Literacy will also see us delving into ‘Wonder’ by Raquel J. Palacio as we analyze figurative language and deepen our understanding of comprehension strategies. The Year Sixes are excited about their final term in primary school and are working hard to make it their best yet!

Year Five What a whirlwind of a year it has been.

This term is not for the faint hearted. We have begun with a bang, with all year five classes being set up in a contemporary learning style. This means that students do not have assigned seating and utilize the pigeon holes in the classrooms to store their belongings. This layout allows students to determine where they want to work and what style whether it be individually, in a small group or with the whole class. By exposing students to this in term four, we hope to improve their transition to year six. We are beginning the term off by looking at reviews, recounts and procedures.

In Mathematics we are focusing on location and transformation, as well as patterns and algebra. In Health we are exploring safety and in Digital Technology we are experimenting with Scratch. In History we are going back in time and learning about the first fleet and key events in Australia’s history.

The Religious Education units of work we are teaching are ‘The Church Community’ and ‘Helped By The Word.’ We are busy preparing our assembly item for week seven and looking forward to our big day out excursion to Rosemount Bowl and Hyde Park at the end of the term.

Christian Service will continue this term as the festive season students will be sharing in the joy of Christmas with our elderly community.

Athletics Carnival Our annual Athletics carnivals were held last week. Both carnivals were held in glorious conditions. What a turn out! There must have been more than 1000 spectators over the two days. It was great to see the high level of participation and the fantastic spirit that all events were contested in. Both junior and senior students competed in a plethora of challenging team game events. On top of all this action we witnessed the students run like mad in all the varied sprint and relay races. It was a massive programme and everyone should be proud of their efforts. I can imagine that all students and teachers had no trouble going asleep after their carnivals. I know I sure did.

Our Champion Boy and Girls Results

Thank you to the Parents that have helped out in anyway. You were sensational.

Congratulations must go out to the intrepid teachers. Without everyone’s help the carnivals would not be such a spectacle. Well Done!

Students who will be required for Interschool duties will be notified very soon. Check your notes for training times.

MATHEMATICS ACCELERATION PROGRAM: YEAR 7, 2017

Corpus Christi College, Bateman, is continuing to cater for the most Mathematics students by offering Acceleration Programs in Years 7-9. Many boys and girls start secondary school with a mathematical understanding beyond that required in the Year 7 Western Australian Curriculum. It is our belief that these students, with the proper guidance, would benefit from undertaking an Accelerated Program which focuses on the Year 8 Western Australian Curriculum.

There are numerous benefits to accelerating students appropriately, such as improving their skills and motivation, and creating opportunities in their pathways of study through to Senior School.

Any current Year 6 student wishing to be considered for the Mathematics Acceleration Program in 2017 is invited to complete an assessment at the College on Saturday 12 November. This assessment is designed to identify students who possess the innate ability to cope with challenging Mathematics.

This opportunity is open to students who are currently enrolled at the College for commencement in 2017, as well as those who are not currently enrolled but who are considering attending the College in 2017.

For further information about this program, please contact the College at [email protected]
