2 | THE CATHOLIC PARISHES OF ARLINGTON - SAINT AGNES AND SAINT CAMILLUS

A MESSAGE FROM FR. MARC Dear Friends, As I was standing in front of St. Agnes Church Sunday Morning, I found myself staring at the flower beds. My mind was going through every scenario that may me before us. Then I saw what I was staring at. These flowers, that normally would have weeks before they would appear are showing full of expectation and

hope. It is a symbol of the long and imposed Holy Saturday we are living. It is a time full of angst and expectation awaiting the Resurrection. It is a moment that cannot be "hacked" by human ingenuity or will. It is a time of pensive and pregnant expectation. The Gospel of God's Creation is a worthy Minister of God's hope.

I am grateful to all who have reached-out to me to express their willingness to lend aid to those of our Faith Family, especially to be assistance to our beloved elders. If you have a need, please call the Collaborative Office (781-648-0220). We can get you in touch with one of these willing disciples of Christ.

St. Agnes Church was cleaned with a sanitizing solution. We will be cleaning St. Camillus, as well. I still encourage people coming to our churches for private prayers to sanitize your hands as they enter and leave - you may need to provide your own, the Church's sanitizer keeps walking-off. Our churches are open during the day (St. Agnes Lower Church 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM and St. Camillus Church 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM) and we will continue Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament from 6:00 AM to 7:00 AM, Monday through Saturday, in St. Agnes Lower Church.

Some have asked about our financial situation. The impact upon our ability to pay employees and meet our financial commitments is of concern. We will be taking money from our savings to insure that our employees get paid. I will be giving a more detailed explanation

Fr. Marc Bishop - Pastor St. Agnes and St. Camillus

when we have a better understanding of the impact. You may wish to contribute through the online platform at cparl.org on the home page, where you can click on online giving and make an offertory gift to either St. Agnes or St. Camillus Parishes. Mailing your contribution is also a good option, but please don’t mail cash only checks or money orders. I thank you for your concern for your parish.

This is an unprecedented moment that needs to be discerned not spurned. Why do we feel loss at this? Does this moment reveal our need, our thirst for communion with Christ and His Church? What can I do to better witness to and live out of that thirst?

We will be posting on our website resources for families and individuals to help them during this difficult and confusing period in our long history. I encourage you to watch Mass on TV or online. CatholicTV.org is an excellent resource for you as well: Broadcasting Masses and other programming produced to help you be informed and grow in your faith life. We will be broadcasting a Mass each day at 12:00 PM at facebook.com/cparlingtonma, while the state of emergency is in effect. We will be publishing a tentative Triduum Schedule soon. We could possibly be combining the services held at St. Agnes and St. Camillus so that we may provide worthy celebrations in honor of God.

We live in HOPE: the persistent expectation that what God has promised in Christ is coming about. Prayer for your wellbeing and for all those who you hold dear, I am

In Christ, Fr. Marc

IT’S NOT TOO LATE FOR THE BEST LENT EVER

As part of our Dynamic Parish Initiative, we invite everyone

in our parish to participate in the Best Lent Ever program. By

joining, you will receive a 3 minute video reflection each

morning from Ash Wednesday to Easter. The reflections

feature Matthew Kelly and are based on the book we handed

out at Christmas, Rediscover the Saints. As we often say, Lent

shouldn’t be focused simply on what we give up, but on who

we become through the disciplines of prayer, fasting, and

generosity. Let’s all move toward becoming a-better-version-

of-ourselves and discover together the amazing possibilities

God has in store for each of us this Lent. It’s simple to sign up

at BestLentEver.com.

EVANGELIZATION SECOND READING SECOND COLUMN Ephesians 5:8-14

Despite the possible application to our lives in a time of social distancing, THE REST OF THIS

COLUMN IS A CORONAVIRUS FREE SPACE. This passage from Ephesians 5 refers to an important Easter theme: light and darkness. It is easy to consider the good works we openly do as the works of righteousness. The fruitless works of darkness, on the other hand, can be thought of as our hidden and embarrassing actions. These two points are clearly made by St. Paul. What might be helpful for each of us is to consider how we fit into this description. Certainly, we need to be people of justice. But, it is an easy temptation for us to point our fingers at others. The news is full of stories from government, business, or personal transactions involving fraud, deception, or exploitation. What does not make headlines is the drama in our hearts, our decision making regarding temptations. What this passage provides is the opportunity to pause. We consider the darkness of temptation and the light of goodness. We can think about our sins of the past. What darkness! It was as if the temptations lied to us. They promised us something good, but they never delivered the goods. That didn’t stop us, however. We kept listening and we remained in the darkness. Perhaps, now we have moved on from that temptation and stopped that sin. We can thank the Lord for giving us the strength. But, we are still under the influence of certain temptations. Let’s take Ephesians 5 as our

Fr. Michael Sheehan

opportunity to climb out of the darkness and stand in the light. Just think about how you are tempted: television, phone, social media. It’s hard to fight against that temptation all alone. It is especially difficult given the history of our weakness in the past. So, what can we do? How do we stand in the light? We invite Christ into our temptation. We talk to him about it. We accept the reality that he is always with us and eager to help us. For me, our drama in the time of temptation helps us to apply the Easter (or Paschal) story to our own lives. Christ is the light. He seeks to shed light on the darkness of our temptations, when we think we are all alone and weak. He is always with us to help us to say, “Lord, give me your light.”

GOSPEL READING

John 9:1-41 Jesus heals the man born blind and reveals himself to him as the Son of Man.

When infants are baptized, parents, with the help of the godparents, assume responsibility for raising the child as a follower of Jesus. The process of maturation in the faith is much like the example found in the story of the man born blind. The man is cured of his blindness, a symbol of his sin. Each time he meets someone after the healing, the man comes to a deeper awareness of who Jesus is. In a similar way, we who are baptized continue to mature in faith as our relationship with and knowledge about Jesus grows. Note how the relationship between Jesus and the man born blind changes and grows throughout the Gospel. Pray together that your relationship with Jesus will continue to grow and develop, becoming ever deeper.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CARDINAL

8 | THE CATHOLIC PARISHES OF ARLINGTON - SAINT AGNES AND SAINT CAMILLUS

March 13, 2020

The directive to temporarily suspend the celebration of Mass applies to all Archdiocesan parishes, missions, and campus ministries until further notice. Baptisms, Confirmations, weddings, and funerals may proceed but attendance should be limited to only immediate family.

Cardinal Seán said “We live in times when many people are confused, hurt, and fearful, for many different reasons. In the midst of these challenges Jesus seeks to meet us in the same way He met the disciples on the road to Emmaus, accompanying us on the journey, calming our fears and anxieties and assuring us that He will be with us always in the gift of the Eucharist. This decision to temporarily suspend the daily and Sunday Mass is motivated by an abundance of caution and concern for those most vulnerable and the need to do our part to help limit and

mitigate the spread of the illness.”

In response to growing public concern and following Governor Baker’s Emergency Order prohibiting most gatherings of 250 or more people, Cardinal Seán P. O’Malley, OFM Cap, Archbishop of Boston, has made the decision effective immediately to temporarily suspend all daily and Sunday Masses and religious services in the Archdiocese of Boston until further notice. This begins at 4:00pm on Saturday afternoon, March 14th. In announcing this decision, the Cardinal has also issued a dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass during this time to the Catholics of the Archdiocese of Boston.

Daily Mass airs live at 9:30 AM and is rebroadcast at 7:00 PM and 11:30 PM.

Sunday Masses air throughout the day at 10:00 AM, 4:00 PM, 7:00 PM, and 11:30 PM.

The Sunday Spanish Mass airs live at 8:00 AM and is rebroadcast at 5:30 PM and 10:00 PM.

Viewers can watch these Masses on demand at any time at www.WatchtheMass.com. For more information about CatholicTV and where you can watch it, visit http://www.catholictv.org/. Cardinal Seán encourages Catholics to participate in the daily and Sunday Masses broadcast from the CatholicTV chapel.

CORONAVIRUS RCAB NEWS

MARCH 22, 2020 - FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT | 9

As is the case with most of the world, we are monitoring all available information and guidance about COVID-19 (the 2019 Novel Coronavirus) to determine how it impacts the many activities conducted within and by the Archdiocese of Boston. In seeking how to respond properly, we will focus at all times on the health, safety and well-being of our faith community. While we are reassured by public health officials at national, state and local public health authorities that our country is at a relatively low risk from this virus at this time, we want to take advantage of that fact to prepare in the event that the situation changes. COVID-19 is a respiratory illness, we are told, that presents with the same general symptoms

as the common cold or the influenza infections that we commonly experience. Should you have questions about an illness you are, or someone you know is, experiencing, we encourage you first to contact your own health provider, and follow the usual practices of good hygiene, such as frequent handwashing (using hand sanitizers with 60% alcohol when soap and water are unavailable); protecting your coughs and sneezes with tissues disposed of immediately, or coughing into your elbow if tissues are not available; cleaning and disinfecting commonly used surfaces often; avoiding contact with people who are ill, if possible; and following other healthy practices of good diet, sleep and exercise.

USCCB RESPONDS TO COVID-19

10 | THE CATHOLIC PARISHES OF ARLINGTON - SAINT AGNES AND SAINT CAMILLUS

Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas. We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son, as you did at the wedding in Cana. Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our nation and world, and for all our families and loved ones, the protection of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this illness. For those already afflicted, we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance. Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust. In this time of trial and testing, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be patient and kind. Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our hearts. We come to you with confidence, knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother, health of the sick and cause of our joy. Shelter us under the mantle of your protection, keep us in the embrace of your arms,

help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus. Amen.

Archbishop Jose H. Gomez of Los Angeles, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, has issued the following regarding Coronavirus (COVID-19): With the worldwide outbreak of the coronavirus, we are confronted once more with the fragility of our lives, and again we are reminded of our common humanity; that the peoples of this world are our brothers and sisters, that we are all one family under God. God does not abandon us, he goes with us even now in this time of trial and testing. In this moment, it is important for us to anchor our hearts in the hope that we have in Jesus Christ. Now is the time to intensify our prayers and sacrifices for the love of God and the love of our neighbor. Let us draw closer to one another in our love for him,

and rediscover the things that truly matter in our lives. United with our Holy Father Pope Francis, let us pray in solidarity for our brothers and sisters here and around the world who are sick. Let us pray for those who have lost loved ones to this virus. May God console them and grant them peace. We pray also for doctors, nurses, and caregivers, for public health officials and all civic leaders. May God grant them courage and prudence as they seek to respond to this emergency with compassion and in service to the common good. In this time of need, I invite all the faithful to seek together the maternal intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and I share this prayer with you:

MARCH 22, 2020 - FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT | 11

YOUTH + YOUNG ADULTS YOUTH MINISTRY DURING A PANDEMIC I just read from the Fuller Youth Institute that they are betting that “social distancing” will be the term of 2020. Fr. Marc and I have been reflecting on the past week and planning for the future, separated

from one another, we’ve both been thinking about what ministry looks like during a pandemic. This whole experience highlights: - How connected we all are. - How our choices impact others. - How, in a time when we’re asked to distance ourselves, we crave connection.

For many of our young people, this may add a greater level of anxiety. While getting extra days off of school may sound fun at first, it does bring big questions about teaching and learning methods, sadness over sports and events being canceled, challenging family logistics, and low-grade uncertainty that puts everyone on edge.

Our youth and young adult ministry and our churches are making big decisions right now. - How do we connect with our people without gathering? - What are the needs of our teenagers and their families? - How do we support college students coming home? - What support do our families need? I’ve been asking questions about my own safety, and that of my own friends and family members.

Just because programs have stopped, we haven’t stopped thinking about you — We will get through this together — I am praying for you and your family. We still want to connect even though you are socially distanced we are still connected by our faith.

Scott Morin Evangelist of Youth

and Young Adults

This situation is new to us all, but we can work together to navigate this experience. We can deal with fear, grief, and the unknown by talking to our family, checking in with our friends, and spending time in prayer, both individually and with others.

We may not be on the leading edge of technology, but we can still share our thoughts and prayers for each other.

I encourage you to watch our 12:00 PM Mass each day on facebook.com/cparlingtonma.

We have created a Facebook Group: A-Town Youth for you to share your thoughts and prayers for each other. It’s a space where we can also pray for the world and those impacted by this event (the poor, the marginalized, the most vulnerable).

We can also talk about ways to support the most vulnerable in our own faith community—our elderly. What can we do for them? Consider how you can use your gifts.

Look for our weekly email filled with questions for you and your parents that you can discuss, along with a prayer you can pray together.

Our volunteers, your small group leaders, are still praying for you, too.

I have found in my many years of youth ministry that events like the one we are all experiencing can ultimately bring people together spiritually. Let your voices be heard. Perhaps new ways of being church will surprise us, challenging us to reflect on our faith and our Church. May we have the courage to lead and to learn. Join us!

Stay well, Scott
