Catalytic Converter: The Automotive Exhaust System

Keeping the exhaust system in

perfect condition is very vital for

the vehicle users.

The exhaust contains toxins that can

be injurious hence a catalytic

converter is invented to eliminate

this danger.

It is very essential for:

Fuel mileage

Environment

Safety of the driver

Why Engines Make Pollution??

Car engines run on:

Gasoline Diesel

Which are made from Petroleum

Petroleum is made up of

hydrocarbons which is

formed when the tiny

sea creatures rot down,

heat up and get squeeze

by layers of sea bed

rocks.

If you burn any kind of

hydrocarbon with oxygen

from the air, it will release

energy along with CO2 &

water along with other

poisonous gases.

And the gases emitted by a

car engine include various

poisonous gases like carbon

monoxide & nitrogen oxides

that cause smog.

What Is A Catalytic Converter?

Catalytic converters are

pollution reducing units.

How it works ?

Within the catalytic

converter a chemical reaction

takes place in which noxious

fumes are turned into less

harmful matter.

A catalytic converter is a large

metal box, having two pipes coming out of it.

One of them is connected

to the engine which brings hot

polluted fumes from the

engine’s cylinders & Second

pipe is connected to the exhaust.

When the gases blow over the

catalyst, chemical reaction takes

place, converting the polluted gas

to some other gases that are safe

enough.

HC

CO

NO2

H2O

CO2

N2

Polluted Air

Cleaned Air

The Culprits:

HC

• This is in the form of unburned gasoline

CO • Created by the combustion of

gasoline

NO2 • Produced when the heat of the

engine forces N2 to combine with O2

The Winners:

Converted from the hydrocarbons

CO2 &

H2O Converted from the carbon monoxide

CO2

Converted from the nitrogen oxide

N2 &

O2

What Makes A Catalytic Converter

So Valuable ??

Precious metals like platinum,

palladium and rhodium are

used in catalytic converters to

remove toxins from the engine.

The price of these valuable

metals are around hundreds of

dollars .

Always park your vehicle in a locked

garage or in well lighted areas.

If you are working at a factory, park

in a fenced area..

If you are going for shopping, park

close to the entrance of the mall.

If you find someone acting suspiciously

around your vehicle, report it to the

nearest police station.

Purchase a vehicle security system

Engrave your license plate on the

converter to make it identifiable.

Thank You
