In its current pentagon shape, with defense towers at the corners and a water moat, Oradea Citadel dates back from the 17th century and was built by Italian architects, in the Renaissance style. It is one of the best preserved citadels of this sort in Central Europe. Previously, until the 13th century, it played the role of a clay fortress with a wooden palisade, and until the 16th century it was a round citadel made of stone.
In the City of Oradea, visitors can admire buildings in a wide variety of architectural styles: baroque, secession, classic, eclectic, romantic and neo-Romanian. The city has over 70 buildings registered on the lists of the National Committee for Historical Monuments.

BATHORY CITADEL
Bathory Citadel and the locality of Şimleu are related through one of the many branches of the Bathory family, which gave several historic personalities in the 16th and 17th centuries. Among them, we could mention Stephen I Bathory of Şimleu who was a voivode of Transylvania and his son, Stephen II Bathory who was a prince of Transylvania and king of Poland. The castle and the citadel still preserve two corner towers, one defense tower and several walls.
CETATEA PIATRA ŞOIMULUI (FALCON STONE CITADEL), PEŞTIŞ
Falcon Stone Citadel, Peştiş, is located in the vicinity of Aleşd town. It was built in the 13th century, on a steep cliff, in the middle of the woods. At the beginning of the 18th century, following the rebellion of the Magyar nobility in Transylvania against the Habsburg occupation, the citadel was destroyed by the Austrian imperial troops. Today little remains from the old citadel but the visitors are attracted by the area, as it provides the opportunity for walks in the forest. The citadel is only accessible from the Eastern side, where the defense moat used to be.
POIANA FLORILOR (FLOWER MEADOW), CASTLE AND CONVENT
The castle and the secluded convent in Poiana Florilor. Several kilometers away from Peştiş (near Aleşd), on a forest road, the visitors can find a beautiful castle, transformed into a monastery. The castle located in Poiana Florilor was built by the Magyar Count Zichy Jeno back in the 18th century. The building has 365 windows, as many as the days of a year and 12 towers, one for each month. Following the nationalization, the castle became a hotel and restaurant. Currently, it is used as a monastery. The wooden church in the castle’s courtyard dates from the 18th century and was brought from Lugașu de Jos.

THE ROMAN CASTRUM POROLISSUM MOIGRAD, SĂLAJ
This is one of the largest and best-preserved archeological sites in Romania. The military center established by Emperor Trajan after conquering Dacia, in 106 A.D., Porolissum became a commercial center enabling trade between Romans and barbarians. It continued to flourish for almost one millennium after the Roman retreat from Dacia (271 A.D.) The Roman Festival Zalău Porolissum is organized here every year - www.festivalulroman.ro
THE DACIAN CITADEL IN MARCA
Several kilometers away from the village of Marca, at the end of a road crossing the forest, visitors arrive at the ruins of a Dacian citadel that used to defend access from Cheile Barcăului (Barcaului Gorges). The archeological excavations carried out here revealed many ceramic fragments, including some from the Middle Ages. A silver hoard dating from the period of Burebista was found near the Dacian citadel. It is now displayed in a museum in Vienna.

CHURCHES:
THE WOODEN CHURCH OF FILDU DE SUS, SĂLAJ
Fildu de Sus takes pride in a church made of wood constructed three centuries ago. It is one of the best preserved wooden churches in Sălaj County, renowned for its sharp tower, reaching 40 meters. The church is laid on a foundation made of stone and is covered with shingles. The painting was completed in the 19th century and is extremely well preserved.
THE WOODEN CHURCH IN PEŞTIŞ
The construction date of the Wooden Church in Peştiş village remains unknown. The inscription plate above the entrance into the church mentions the year 1797, as the year of reconstruction. The painting on the altarpiece dates from 1810 and is attributed to Ioan Zugravu, a painter originating from the South of Romania.
REFORMED CHURCH OF CRASNA, SĂLAJ
The Reformed Church of Crasna is a superb building located in the center of the town. It was initially a Catholic church and was presumably built towards the end of the 14th century. Today, it preserves Gothic elements such as the arcades at the windows and the altar cover with ribs. During the 16th century, the church was reformed. The coffered ceiling, with floral or iconic motifs, is approximately 300 years old.

BIC MONASTERY (ŞIMLEU SILVANIEI), SĂLAJ
Located about 3 km away from Şimleu Silvaniei, within the premises of the Bic Monastery, travelers can admire the wooden church from Stâna. Built in 1778, the roof is covered with shingles and a porch displays arcades fixed with nails. The inner painting is preserved only in the aisle.

MONKS MONASTERY OF STRÂMBA, SĂLAJ
This is one of the oldest Orthodox monasteries in Transylvania, dating from the 15th century. It is also the only monk monastery in Sălaj County. The old monastic complex still preserves the wooden church, under the patronage of the Assumption of Virgin Mary.

MUSEUM OF FOLKLORE ART LIGIA BODEA – PLOPIŞ (SĂLAJ)
In the village of Iaz, Plopiş commune, Ligia Bodea began to collect traditional items that were to become part of a house-museum. At the time, she was only a child. The first items to be included in the museum collection came from her grandmother’s house, and were followed by others, collected not only from Plopiş, but also from the villages nearby. The collection of the Museum of Folklore Art „Ligia Bodea” consists of household commodities, folk costumes, dowry chests, canvases, ceramic items.
THE CAVE AND WATERFALL AT VADU CRIŞULUI, BIHOR
The cave located in Vadu Crişului, also known as the Zichy Cave is found deep into Pădurea Craiului Mountains, on the left bank of Crişul Repede river, 3 km away from Şuncuiuş and Vadu Crişului. At the cave outlet, the river crossing the cave forms Vadu Crişului waterfall. The cave is open for visitation.

IZVOARELE BARCĂULUI (BARCĂULUI SPRINGS) – TUSA RESERVE, SĂLAJ
Barcău river springs from the Metaliferi Mountains. The water collected on the karstic plateau of Ponor branches out into several small streams, which form small waterfalls. Downstream it forms an impressive waterfall that is over 10 meters high. The spring area was declared a natural reserve, and is also known as Tusa-Barcău Reserve. The abundant spring bed collecting the water from the karstic plateau gathers large amounts of travertine deposits.
GRĂDINA ZMEILOR (GARDEN OF THE DRAGONS), SĂLAJ
Grădina Zmeilor, a natural reserve located in the vicinity of Gălgău Almaşului village, 10 km away from the town of Jibou, attracts visitors due to stone formations with unusual shapes, carved by winds, rains and snows, which became the chimerical characters in the local legends. One of these legends tells that dragons living in the area used to steal young girls from the village. A brave man succeeded to defeat the dragons which were then bewitched by a girl who turned them into stones.
THE WATER CAVE IN BULZ, BIHOR
The water cave in Bulz spreads over half a kilometer and is crossed by a water stream. At the exit, the water falls from a height of 3 meters, forming a cascade.

THE CAVE IN IGRITA, BIHOR
The cave is located approximately 5 km away from Aleşd, through Aştileu. From here, visitors have to walk one kilometer to reach the cave from Igriţa. The cave is known for the many cave bear fossils, an animal extinct 10,000 years ago.
THE BOTANICAL GARDEN IN JIBOU, SĂLAJ
This is one of the main attractions in town.
PEȘTERA URȘILOR (BEAR CAVE), BIHOR
Peștera Urșilor, discovered in 1975, is considered to be unique in Europe. It has three galleries open for visitation. The Gallery of Bones was thus named based on the many cave bear bones found here. Emil Racoviţă Gallery, honoring the greatest Romanian speleologist, contains stalactites, stalagmites and columns of various shapes and sizes, stimulating the imagination of visitors. In the Gallery of Candles, the tourists can admire candle-shaped stalactites, and also curiously-shaped calcareous formations. The cave was inhabited by cave bears. The researchers found that 17,000 years ago, most likely following a strong earthquake, the only entrance to the cave was blocked and the bears left inside remained captive and starved to death.

CETĂTILE PONORULUI (PONORULUI CITADELS), BIHOR
Cetățile Ponorului, located in the Padiş area of the Apuseni Mountains, are considered to be the most imposing karstic formations in Romania and were thus declared a natural monument. They consist in three large rock circles (dolines or sinkholes), laid in a forested depression. Here grow plants specific to the tundra biome with a unique phenomenon that can be observed: the valleys of the mountains are covered in coniferous trees, while the peaks are covered with deciduous trees.
PEȘTERA GHETARUL FOCUL VIU (LIVE FIRE GLACIER CAVE), BIHOR
Peștera Ghețarul Focul Viu is located in the Bihor Mountains, Apuseni Natural Park. The cave is accessible by a wooden ladder. The cave has two halls. The Great Hall hosts the 25,000 cubic meters glacier, the third in size in the country after the glaciers in Scărişoara and Borţig. The glacier lasts throughout the entire year. Behind the Great Hall, there are groups of stalagmites, touched by the sun light, thus causing colorful reflections, hence the name of the cave. Behind the stalagmites there is a gallery leading to the Small Hall, which goes down approximately 4 meters and has no natural light.

IZBUC (SPRING AND MONASTERY – THE OLDEST IN BIHOR COUNTY)
The name Izbuc refers to a spring which bursts out recurrently. This rare phenomenon was presumed to have been the source of miraculous healings. Legend has it that a blind child washed his face with water from this spring and it healed his sight. A monk monastery was built here.
STÂNA DE VALE, BIHOR
Stâna de Vale is a very picturesque area, being the departure point towards various sightseeing places: Moara Dracului Waterfall, Săritoarea Ieduţului Waterfall, Meziad Cave, Folklore Center of Budureasa (where dowry chests are made from smoked beech wood, and where tourists may visit a functioning water mill and a cloth whirlpool).
