On commencement of the project, a screen was erected as a change area and buffer zone between site and patient areas and tack mats were installed as an added control measure. The doors were removed and a new door, frame and partition wall was installed to configure the opening for a single disabled access door. The room was decanted of all shelving, vinyl sheet flooring and ceiling tiles which were all disposed of. The Plywood floor was lifted and set aside and walkways were put in place to create safe working areas.

Types of Work Involved

Carpentry / Joinery / Demolition / Plumbing / Flooring / Electrical / Suspended ceilings

The Task

The Trust identified the former store room as the ideal site for the Install of HBN, (Health Building Note) HTM (Health Technical Memorandum) compliant wet room.

The Problem

The ward remained live throughout the duration of the works making the control of noise, vibration and dust of highest importance. There were no services present within the room and the building was of a timber/ Portacabin type construction,

resulting in floor joists being re-configured to accommodate the Shower tray and waste runs. The room had a double door fitted as it was for storage, which needed to be reconfigured to be used for disabled access.

The Solution

Firstly, designs were compiled and agreed upon with the Trust’s IPC (Infection Prevention Control) team, the ward matron (end-users) and the client.

The Solution cont.

Floor joists were removed and a new configuration was installed to accommodate the shower tray and waste runs. The shower tray was then installed and the waste run through new penetrations in the existing joists to the adjacent WC’s waste stack. The WC was taken out of action for 2 hours only and the connections were made and tested. New insulation was installed

throughout the floor void as none was present, before the ply flooring was installed.

A flexible levelling compound was applied to the plywood floor and Altro safety flooring was then installed throughout with 100mm cap and cove up-stand. Trovex clean room cladding was then installed around the shower tray.

Trovex Hygipod IPS (Integrated Plumbing System) panels were then installed in locations for clinical wash basin, shower and disabled WC. All service connections were made and tested.

The walls were then decorated with 2no coats of Dulux Sterisheild eggshell paint. New Armstrong Hydroboard wet room suitable ceiling tiles were installed into the existing grid.

New wet room suitable lighting was installed with 1no emergency fitting. Extraction was installed, vented to the outside and tested.

Anti-ligature shower curtain was installed. All edges were sealed with silicon.

A builders clean was performed and then IPC, end-user and client inspections were carried out before the contract was signed off as complete. The screen was removed after the hospital performed a deep clean.
