As told by Jaquanna: Clarence (CJ) and I met on the

campus of my alma mater, one beautiful day in March 2007.

CJ and a mutual friend picked me up to go to Alabama one

weekend to see a baseball tournament. During that trip we

shared countless conversations and a lot of laughter. We

began a friendship and shortly after began officially dating in

May of 2008. One Saturday night in June, CJ told me he

wanted to have a date night . We had a great dinner and a

night out on the town. We got back to his apartment and I

was taking my heels off from the long night . When I f inished

taking my shoes off and turn around, there he was with a box.

He opened the box and said Ive been trying to ask you this

all night. I want you to be my wife. Will you marry me? I

instantly started to cry and told him, YES!. As I look back at

the night , I can now see the different times he tried to ask but

his nerves got the best of him. The fact that he proposed in

the comfort of his home with only the two of us made it that

much more special. It is a night I will never forget.

As told by Ashlee: It was the morning of April 20th, my

24th birthday, and I was woken up by my alarm. I turned it off

and rolled over. As I tried to go back to sleep and get those

last few minutes, Tyler was up and down out of the bed three

or four times, so I couldnt go back to sleep. I finally rolled

over and grabbed my phone and played a hand or two of soli-

taire. When I decided to get up to get ready for work, I sat

on the end of the bed putting on my socks. Tyler walked into

the room and shut the door and just stared at me. I was kind

of weirded out by that so I asked him, Why are you watching

me put my socks on? He said nothing. He just cut his eyes

up to the ceiling fan. I followed his gaze up to the ceiling and

saw a question mark carved out of wood (Tyler carved it him-

self) with my engagement ring hanging off of a hook on the

end. So I looked at him and said, Whats that? He said, Its

a question. Answer the question. So I said, Well, whats the

question? He said, Will you marry me? Of course I said

yes! That was the best birthday ever!!

As told by Ashley: William and I went to our favorite

restaurant The Olde Pink House in Savannah, Georgia. For

the entire day, Wil l continued to say Lets eat dinner early

and for the life of me I could not figure out why he wanted to

eat dinner at 5 oclock. At 5 oclock we arrived at the Olde

Pink House for dinner and the hostess says Mr. and Mrs.

Pruitt this way. Will begins to laugh Im still clueless. We sit

down for dinner, order and eat a scrumptious meal (Crispy

flounder - Yummy). Will put the ring box on the table, got

on one knee and said, Ashley will you marry me? I said

Yes and abruptly asked him Did you ask my Daddy?

(Needless to say, he had my Daddy s blessing). There was no

doubt that William and I wanted to get married in Columbia,

the city where we fell in love. We dated for three years

before getting engaged in Savannah, Georgia and spent

another year planning the entire wedding, a challenge I will

never forget, but I loved every minute of it.

When you walk into Bella Vistas new locationat 929 Gervais Street (the Mais Oui Ltd. Build-

ing) you are immediately taken aback by the grand

beauty o the building, which was designed to rep-

licate the Palace o Versailles, and by the warmth

emanating rom the young, energetic bridal con-

sultants who appear to greet you. Within min-

utes o talking to owner, Marcell Steely-Judice, it is

clear that Bella Vistas success and recent expan-

sion is driven by her artistic passion, keen busi-

ness sense, and relentless demand or perection.

Even the most neurotic o brides have no choice

but to eel condent that this wedding proes-

sional shares their desire to create the perect day.

The building is breathtaking. With vaulted ceilings, gold ornamental trim and huge crystal chande-

liers above, a mix o hardwood and Italian marble

foors below, and elaborate scroll work replaces

in every room, it is truly a location t or a King, or

in this case a bride. Ater touring each elegant

room, it is obvious why Steely-Judice and her

husband decided to open the building to guests,

and make it the newest wedding venue in Colum-

bia. The grand ceilings, the intimate sophisticated

eel o the rooms, and a staircase that was meant

or photos make this the perect site or a small to

    mid-sized wedding.

Ater moving their popular wedding dress bou-

tique to its new location, Steely-Judice and her

husband expanded their business by opening a

charming French Bakery: Lady Antoinettes. The

bakery oers mouth-watering macaroons, beig-nets, petit ours, and other baked goods so deli-

cious that Steely Judice has diculty keeping them

stocked due to already overwhelming demand.

While most o Columbia is happily spellbound by

Lady Antoinettes pastries and coee, brides will

be particularly interested to learn that the bakery

    also oers stunning custom-designed wedding

cakes. Ater a bride discusses her custom-made

dress at Bella Vista, she can design a custom-made

wedding cake with the help o Lady Antoinettes

team o artists. Each bride meets with Steely-Ju-

dice so she can get a sense o their individual style

and the design they envision or their cake. She

then summons her baker and cake designer tobegin the project. Just like at Bella Vistas, where

each bride discovers a dress that ts her style and

taste, brides who walk into Steely-Judices bakery

are treated as individuals. Steely-Judice knows

that each wedding and each bride is unique, and

she is passionate about the artistic contributions

she and her team make to a brides overall ex-

    perience.

Over at the boutique side o the business,

Steely-Judices team o consultants meets with

each bride beore presenting her with only those

dresses that match her vision o the perect day.

Each bride tries on dresses that fatter her indi-

vidual body type and t with her unique style.

Dresses are oten custom-made and must be

ordered six to eight months in advance. There is

no question that you and this team o artists whohave your best interests in mind, will nd a dress

    that was made or you.

Brides who visit Bella Vista and Lady Antoinettes

do not have to rife through rows upon rows o

dresses or scroll through photos o mass-pro-

duced cakes on a monitor. In this classy boutique

and bakery, passionate artists want to help you

nd your dress, your cake, your reception site.

Steely-Judices team is as passionate and artisti-

cally accomplished as she is, because only those

with a background and a love o art make the cut.

Steely-Judice knows she can teach them about

her business as long as they have an eye or detail

and design, and are driven by an artistic passionsimilar to her own. The team is committed to the

brides experience. They want brides to eel not

just comortable but exhilarated by the prospect

o planning the perect day. But beyond the joyul

    experience o picking out a gorgeous, one-o-a-

kind dress and a custom-made cake designed by

artists invoking your styleyou will walk out o

this beautiul building eeling like you were tempo-

rarily transported to another time, another coun-

tryvisiting a team o artists who want nothing

It is no wonder so many people in Co-

lumbia trust Vaughn Granger Sr.s instincts

when it comes to clothing: he is tall, hand-

some, and, just as you would expect,

    exceptionally well dressed. He opened

Granger Owings in 1977 when, as he ex-

plains it, he was a very young man. Early

on, Granger developed a loyal customerbase made up o proessionals who came to

depend on the integrity o his clothing. And

as Grangers business evolved, this strong

customer base evolved right along with

him. In 1991, Granger realized that Co-

    lumbias younger generation, the children

o his clientele, should also have the option

    o purchasing well-made clothing designed

according to their style. He moved his store

to its current location on Main Street and

began oering suit packages and wedding/

ormal wear targeted at a younger demo-

graphic. Broadening the scope o his busi-

ness was a smart business decision but alsoone that could only be made by someone

like Granger, who is passionate about pro-

viding quality attire to the residents o Co-

    lumbia regardless o their age.

    Somehow, walking into Granger Owings

makes you eel better dressed even beore

youve tried on the clothing. The store was

recently renovated and its sleek style bets

the clothing inside. It is a store that would

are well on 5th Avenue in New York, situat-

ed next to Bergdor Goodman or Saks Fith

Avenue. But unlike those stores where you

expect to be greeted by a pretentious sta,

at Granger Owings, guests are received byGrangers amily and close business part-

ners who are all very riendly and clearly

enjoy working together. His wie, Deborah

is the CFO or the business and plays an in-

tegral role, as do both his sons, Vaughn Jr.

(LV), and David Ross (DR). The team

also includes Jimmy Rogers who Granger

    respectully explains does everything,

Travis Hollis who specializes in shoes, Keith

Rowland who heads up the wedding/or-

mal wear line, Jordan Rogers, and even his

daughter in law, Kelsey Granger. Custom-

ers in need o consultation are embraced

by this team o style experts who help select

outts appropriate or any event. The store

is stocked with apparel or engagement par-

ties, rehearsal dinners, weddings, and the

oce. Made with abric rom Italy and man-

uactured by the amilys own company inPortugal, the clothing is top quality without

being overpriced. They also oer custom-

made clothing: suits, sport coats, pants, and

shirts, a unique option that represents hal

    o the stores business.

Across the street is Grangers new store,

Circa 1332. Oering sleek apparel or the

weekends, this store serves a burgeon-

ing group o young male patrons. While

Granger Owings may be comparable to

stores in Midtown Manhattan, Circa 1332

has, as Granger puts it, more o a SoHo

eel. In a one hundred year-old building,

complete with gas lights hanging rom anunnished ceiling, copper shelving, and dark

hardwood foors, this store evokes the hip

eel o a neighborhood in lower Manhat-

tan. Customers will nd jeans, shirts, belts,

coats, and watches, all with the same level

o quality ound at Granger Owings, but

with a distinctly more relaxed eel.

Vaughn Granger, Sr., along with his amily

and loyal business partners, built a business

that has kept Columbia well-dressed or

thirty-ve years. Brides who choose Grang-

er Owings will eel condent that their

grooms, brothers, and athers have the

highest quality clothing or every weddingevent, rom the engagement party to the

reception. And ater meeting the Granger

men and learning about their business,

there really is no question that every bride

in Columbia would be thrilled i her groom

looked a little bit more like a Granger.

    A Day to Remember

    20

A Day to RememberWhen Brittany Farence Patton went out with a

group to Carolina Ale House to celebrate a girl-

riends engagement, she never guessed the night

celebrating her riends pending nuptials would

set her on the path to her own wedding day. She

especially didnt guess that the guy she overheard

making a joking remark about her riendthe

guy she conronted brusquely beore walkingawaywould one day be her groom.

Ater their conrontation, PJ Patton told riends

that he was going to go over and introduce him-

sel to Brittany and ask or her number. Their

conversation went well, and something about

his deep brown eyes and personable disposition

convinced Brittany to take a chance on PJ. She

gave him the number, but says she was a bit jit-

tery when she agreed to go or sushi with him a

ew weeks later. I was thinking, I this doesnt

go well, Ill just say Nice meeting you, and walk

    away, she recalls.

But their Friday night sushi outing went very

well. We had a great time laughing and talk-ing, she says. And pretty soon, the two were

dating. One o their rst dates was a day trip to

Chimney Rock state park, and it was there, two

years later, that PJ proposed to Brittany on the

top o the mountain ater a picnic lunch. I turned

around, and there he was with a box in his hand,

telling me how much he loved me and that he

wanted to spend the rest o his lie with me, Brit-

tany recalls. Brittany was still crying tears o joy

when another couple approached apologizing or

their intrusion but saying that they had seen the

proposal happening and had actually snapped a

picture or Brittany and PJ, capturing their special

    moment.

PJ had spent the past ew months picking out

a ring or the girl he says completes him. Ive

had relationships that were a constant struggle,

but this was dierent. It wasnt hard at all to be

happy and make us work, he says. This just

seemed to come as easy as breathing. She truly

made me happy. I really elt she was the nal

piece to the puzzle. He chose a vintage-style ring o white gold with

an emerald-cut diamond, surrounded by a halo

o smaller diamonds. It was perect, Brittany

says. She and PJ then set out to nd the perect

    place to get married.

Ater touring several venues, they met with

wedding coordinator Kristy Polk at the Millstone

at Adams Pond o o Blu Road in Columbia.

They were immediately charmed by its beautiul

scenery. Ater we talked to Kristy and got the

available dates and paperwork, we walked across

the bridge over the waterall and walked towards

the trail, Brittany recalls. I asked PJ what he was

thinking, and he said, This is it. This is wherewere gonna get married.

They set the date or October 2012, and Brit-

tany began planning their wedding. She wanted

the tone o the wedding to be rustic and simple

and Southern, to match the tone o the location.

To this end, she chose a classic, lace dress rom

Evelyns Bridal in Lugo. The ull-waisted, ivory

gown had a sweetheart neckline and keyhole

back. It was tted, but with a trumpet skirt to al-

low or comortable movement. I wanted to be

able to dance and move in my dress, she recalls.

Topping o the classic look was a cathedral-length

veil borrowed rom a close riend.

Brittany laughs remembering PJs attitude to-

wards her wedding gown. Hes very supersti-

tious, and he did not want to see that dress be-

ore the big day, she says. He wouldnt even

go in the room where I had my dress or two

    months beore the wedding.

For PJ and his groomsmen, Brittany chose char-

coal-grey Vera Wang tuxedos. The three junior

groomsmen and ring bearer wore a light greytux. Brittanys bridesmaids and junior bridesmaid

had navy halter-top dresses with rufed collars.

They carried yellow bouquets. Brittanys own

bouquet was o white and navy anemones and

dark blue hydrangeas with yellow fowers mixed

    in.

Making all o the little decisions that go into a

wedding was stressul at times, but Brittany says

all the stress ell into the background just a ew

weeks beore the wedding when her beloved

grandather, her dads ather, passed away. I was

at my bachelorette weekend in Myrtle Beach

when my dad called to tell me the news, she

says. It was really tough.Just a week beore the wedding, Brittany got

even more bad news with the passing o another

grandparenther moms mother. All those little

things I had stressed out about with the wedding

just went out the window, she says, and Brittany

ocused on mourning two people she loved.

Brittany and PJ honored all o their grandparents

at the wedding with a mantle decorated with pic-

tures o them at their own weddings. They also

lit a remembrance candle and placed it on the

    center o the mantle.

With her grandparents very much in her heart,

o fnding her perect princesomeone she

could love and share her lie withmany years

wedding gowns online one day just or un, she

wedding collection. With a sweetheart neckline,

an outer layer o shimmering, sheer material,

and a ull ballroom-style skirt, the dress was all

    she had imagined.

The prince also turned out to be perect,

though he was not exactly what she had imag-

ined. For one thing, Lauren, whose ather was

in the Marines, had always vowed she would

not marry a military man. I swore that the mili-

tary lie was just not or me, she says. But I ell

Ahmed Mohiuddin was nervous. His carriage

ride was late. It was supposed to take him and

his girlriend, Lena Al-Dujaili, around New Or-

leans French Quarter beore bringing them to

the restaurant bar where they had rst met.

Lena had always said she wanted to do it, and

this night was especially perect or it.

A year and a hal ago, Ahmed had graduated

rom the Medical University o South Carolina

and moved to New Orleans to start his medical

residency. He had gone to the restaurant with a

new riend, spotted Lena, and made a B-line or

her, he later said. I told my riend she was the

    prettiest girl at the bar.

Ater agonizing minutes spent stressing about

his elaborate plan, Ahmeds carriage nally

showed up, whisking him and Lena to the res-

taurant and to the very table now covered with

fowers where they had introduced them-

selves. It was where Ahmed now proposed.

The logical next step was planning a wedding

as intricate as the proposal. The challenge was

to combine Ahmeds Indian culture with Lenas

Arabic background, and to bring in elements o

American and uniquely New Orleans traditions.

We were trying to put as many cultures to-

gether as possible, said Lena, who is rom La-

ayette, La. but was attending medical school in

New Orleans when she met Ahmed.

The couple picked Columbia, where Ahmed is

originally rom, as the setting or their wedding.

On September 12, 2012, Ahmed and Lena wed

at the picturesque Lace House garden venue, a

beautiul slice o the Governors Mansion Com-

plex. They were married by an imam, bringing

together their two cultures and two big amilies.

During the traditional Indian ceremony in ront

o nearly 500 guests, Lena beamed in her red

and gold sari. Delicate designs wrapped around

her hands and wrists, inked careully at the henna

party the night beore. Her bridesmaids anned

out behind her in complementary golden yel-

low saris and matching henna patterns. Ahmed

beamed back in a regal kurta at the head o a line

o groomsmen sporting similar loose collarless

    shirts in black.

It was a beautiul wedding. There were tears

in my eyes seeing them get married, said Omar

Mohiuddin, Ahmeds older brother and best

    man.

happy together; you can see happiness in

    them.

As the ceremony ended, the party began.

Ahmed and Lena quickly changed clothes,

the groom into a tuxedo and the bride into a

white dress a tradition in both American and

Arabic cultures. Then, along with the bridal

party, they danced their way into the recep-

    tion. New Orleans style.

Its called a Second Line, Lena explained,

describing the parade accompanied by jazz

music. Its a New Orleans wedding tradition.

It was my avorite part, Lena said.

Custom has it umbrellas are carried, o-

cially to keep o sun and rain but nowadays

just to note a Second Line is approaching.

Lena and Ahmed decorated the umbrellas

    themselves.

They spent an entire day just hot gluing

eathers and beads on them, said Zeena Al-

Dujaili, Lenas older sister and maid o honor.

The Second Line was also one o Zeenas

avorite parts o the wedding, besides the

    dancing.

Everyone had a good time on the dance

foor, Zeena said. There were some pretty

    interesting dance moves.

Best man Omar Mohiuddin agreed that

the dance foor was the estive center o the

reception, where a mix o Indian, Arabic and

American tunes played throughout the night.

The dancing was pretty crazy, he said. I t

was very multicultural and it all mixed won-

    derully.

Like the music, the ceremony and the recep-

tion parade, all aspects o Lena and Ahmeds

wedding attempted to use together the di-

erent aspects o their cultures. The bold red

and gold color scheme, in observance o typi-

    cal brightly-colored Indian weddings, played

o the soter pinks, yellows and creams ound

in the fowers, reception tents and streamers

    hanging rom the ceilings.

They really wanted to make sure that they

kept both o their cultures present and that

the beautiul colors and uniqueness o certain

details carried through so their guests could

experience it, said Melanie Murphy, the cou-

ples wedding planner and the owner o By

Invitation Only..., an event planning business

    in Columbia.

It was really a great blending o everything.

The lushness o it was something you dont

    see a lot, she said.

And while the wedding succeeded in bring-

ing together these cultures, at its heart it was

bringing together these two people, Ahmed

and Lena, joined together by love and now

    marriage.

I got to marry the love o my lie in ront o

all my riends and amily, Ahmed said.

Lena was equally delighted. It was really

the best day o my lie, she said. It was such

a happy day and everything was perect in my

    mind.

    USC Love Story

Each year one lucky couple receives a wedding

planned by the students o the Wedding Plan-

ning and Management course at the University

o South Carolina. The sole requirement or the

couples applying is to have an aliation with the

University o South Carolina. The applicants can

submit their applications as videos or written sto-

ries answering why they are the most deserving

couple. The class o 65 students reviewed each

application narrowing down their search to the

top 3 couples. Ater receiving numerous appli-cations or the wedding, one lucky couple was

chosen to complete their love story.

Whitney and Sterling Dye were the lucky

winners o the wedding. Whitney is a nurs-

ing student at the University o South Carolina

and with her busy schedule the couple did not

think they would have the time to plan or their

dream wedding. Unlike many candidates, Ster-

ling submitted the application explaining why he

and Whitney were the most deserving couple.

Their love story started out like a romantic airy

tale which was destined or happily ever ater.

Sterling and Whitney met while accompanying

their riends on a blind date. The date was agroup setting which did not allow them much

time to get to know each other. A ew years

later, Sterling and Whitney crossed paths again,

remembered each other ondly rom the blind

date, and have been together ever since. As a

git, the couple received a trip to Paris rom their

parents. While there, Sterling took the opportu-

nity to propose to Whitney in ront o the Eiel

    Tower.

The wedding was held on Sunday November

18 at the Mitchell House in Lexington, South

Carolina. The fower arrangements and delicate

colors were eminine and not overpowering.

They had a view o the night sky that gave their

venue a unique and modern eel. The wedding

was decorated in a peacock blue and green.

Each chair was dressed with a cream satin bow

that complimented the long strands o crystal

lights hanging rom the tent. Ater the wedding

ceremony was completed, wedding guests were

escorted inside the Mitchell House where they

enjoyed hors doeuvres while the bride and

groom took pictures. USCs mascot Cocky

made an appearance at the wedding which was

un or everyone. The couple was very apprecia-

tive o the successully planned wedding and en-

chanted reception which celebrated the begin-

ning o their happily ever ater. The students o

the Wedding Planning and Management course

were proud o the memorable experience they

created or the couple to orever cherish.
