10/89 to 05/95 Senior Technical Writer - Sykes Enterprises and PDR Consulting Services

Projects at IBM and SAS Institute

I designed and wrote entire documentation libraries for high-level software and hardware projects at these companies. My work included hardcopy books in multiple electronic formats and online help. Some of the most interesting work during this period includes:

The development of the library and supervision of the writing team for the Data Visualization software and hardware products created at the IBM Watson Research Center in Poughkeepsie, New York.

The development of the library for the OSI network communications products developed in the IBM Networking Labs in Rome, Italy.

The development of an online help system for UNIX X-windows platforms that simulated the look and feel of Microsoft Windows online help. This help system was created for the Emulus software product at SAS Institute in Cary, North Carolina. I worked one-on-one with the developer of Emulus software to design and code the help system, using RTF. We named the help system Helplus, and we published an article in Dr. Dobb’s Journal in June, 1995 that described our work together on this project. My involvement in the design went beyond the help system to the software user interface because we wanted to correct user interface problems at the source instead of in the documentation.

The development of the library for Opera, an expert search engine based on fuzzy logic. Opera was developed by the IBM Support Group in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. Opera was internal software designed to assist the high-level support team in locating existing problems and solutions that closely matched the current problem they were trying to solve for a customer. Opera was intended to mimic the assistance support reps. typically get from the local "office expert."

7/93 to 6/99 Internationalization Services Consultant Internationalization and Translation Services (ITS), Inc.

I was one of four partners who formed ITS. We provided consulting and translation services for several companies, including IBM and SAS Institute. We wrote and published The Internationalization Report, which explains what internationalization and localization are, explains why they are important for today’s software companies, and describes how best to achieve them in software and documentation, based on ISO standards. The report includes a number of examples and guidelines. Samples of the report are available upon request.
