Bernie Marcus• Founder, Home Depot (2008 revenue of $72B, Fortune #25)
• Fired as CEO of Handy Dan Hardware in 1978 after
disagreement with Board. Founded Home Depot with Arthur
Blank (also fired from Handy Dan) same year.
“Getting fired was the best thing that could have
happened to me. It liberated me from a fixed and
narrow path and thrust me into a world of
exciting possibilities. It gave
me room to contemplate what
to do with the rest of my life.” TR Saint, ex-career transitionist
Treat it as you would when making the most important
decision in your life
• Because it is not just a search for something that
will pay for your next meal or next month‟s
mortgage…
• But because it is life‟s way of saying “here‟s
your big chance to get it right
from the start”
Approach it as you would when making a major
business decision
Goal StrategiesMeasures & Next Steps
Goal StrategiesMeasures & Next Steps
“Getting it right from the start” means having a clear
definition of your career goal• Remember, this is what you want to do with the rest
of your life
• Try not to succumb to the temptation of “anything will
do so long as it pays the rent”
“What you will do for the rest of your life” lies in the
intersection of the 3 P‟s

Goal StrategiesMeasures & Next Steps
Develop a “Strategic Plan”:
1. Identify as many industries as possible where these careers/
jobs may be found.
2. Identify as many companies operating within each industry.
3. Plan to reach out to these companies.
• Networking (real and virtual)
• Marketing materials: resume, elevator speech, handbills
• Informational interviews
Goal StrategiesMeasures & Next Steps
Work your plan: “Finding a job” is your new job
• Set goals: eg, number of requests to network per day, number of
networking contacts a day, informational interviews a week, etc
• Practice: elevator speech, informational interview, job interview
• Sharpen the saw: read up on latest developments and trends in
your target career/ profession, in target industries and companies;
go back to school, learn a new skill
• Remain centered: have a support and accountability group,
exercise, diet, spiritual grounding
THANK YOU!
