INTRODUCTION• According to Merriam-Webster a goal is: the

end toward which effort is directed. • Goals are dreams and wants, except a goal

is more specific. • The purpose of a goal is to give you

something to aim for, something that you long to achieve.

• The goal should make your life better in some way.

• Goals can be short-, mid- and long-term

TYPES OF GOALS• Long-term Goals:

1-year goals, 5, 10 years.• Mid-term Goals:

goals for the next 3 months, 6 months and 9 months

• Short-term Goals:1-30 days from now

• Goals help you set priorities and keep moving forward in your life

• Learning how to set goals is as important as knowing what the goal should contain. 

• There are a number of different systems, such as SMART goals, and FRAME of mind.

SMART GOALS• Specific-Be clear about what you want to

accomplish• Measurable-Be sure you can measure your

goal in some way in order to be able to track your progress

• Attainable-Make sure it is possible, with effort, to achieve your goal

• Relevant-Make sure it is something important to your life

• Time-bound-Set a deadine by which you wish to accomplish the goal

FRAME OF MIND• Fantasize - Dream about your best life. Ask

yourself: what do you want to be doing in 1 year? 5 years? Who to you want to become?

• Reality - Fantasies can become reality, depending on how much effort you are willing to put in

• Aim - Define your goal(s) by striking a balance between Fantasy and Reality; set a high but realistic goal you can achieve if you work at it

• Method – Create an action plan as to how you can accomplish the goal. Don’t be afraid to ask for help or take a course or get coaching if you need it.

• Evaluation – Track your results to see how you are progressing. Don’t give up-learn from any mistakes or setbacks.

• Not having goals is a bit like driving cross-country without a road map or GPS. Where are you going? How do you plan to get there?

• If you have ever sat down on a Sunday evening in front of a pile work and asked yourself, "What happened to the entire weekend?"  then you need to set goals and priorities.

• Goals help you determine the right roads to take to get where you want to go

SMARTER GOALS • Evaluate-Track your progress regularly and

see how well or badly things are doing• Review/Re-set-Remind yourself regularly of

what you are trying to accomplish. If you are on track, great. If you are not, then it is time to re-set the goal.

• Resetting can ensure that you don’t give up completely and waste all of your hard work

• Reviewing can be done on your own, or with a friend, colleague, or accountability partner who is helping you with your goal

• An accountability partner can keep you on track-that’s why they weigh in at Weight Watchers-to be accountable to someone

1. SET GOALS• Identify what is important to you. What do you want to

accomplish?• What does your ideal life look like?• Think in relation to:• Job• Family life• Income• Relationships• Spiritual practice• Home environment and location• And so on

2. IDENTIFY POSSIBLE STRATEGIES OR OBJECTIVES TO REACH EACH GOAL

• Make a list of what you feel are the best and most effective ways of reaching the goals you have already identified.

• For example, if you decide you want to live and work in Ireland, what would you have to do in order to make that a reality?

• Passport• Work permit• Jobs you could do• And so on

3. SELECT THE BEST STRATEGIES• Now that you have made a list of several

ways to achieve your goal, recognize which of these strategies will work best for you.

• Should you try to do it all online?• Or should you plan at least one trip to Ireland

to scope out the possibilities, get to know the country, places to rent, and so on?

4. CREATE ACTION STEPS FOR EACH STRATEGY. • Once you have listed your strategies, break them

down into action steps• What detailed and specific things do you have to do

to accomplish each strategy s you can ultimately reach your goal?

• For example, going to Ireland:• Passport• Airfare• X days • A list of possible job contacts• A place to stay• A budget for food and travel, and so on

• Setting goals is a means of identifying your aims in life and mapping out how you are going to accomplish them.

• Your goals should be your own, not what other people want you to do, be, or become

• By writing down your goals you are committing yourself to accomplishing them.

• Therefore, make sure that your goals are important to YOU!

• Motivation and commitment are what make you strive to achieve your goal

• Motivation levels can go up and down. Once you have your goal in mind, write your motivation story as to why you want to achieve that goal.

COMMITMENT 1• Once you feel motivated, you should also feel

committed to achieving your goal, even though it will require work, effort and sometimes sacrifice

• Commitment creates accountability-we promise to undertake something, and keep at it until we succeed

• What will be the consequences of not following through and achieving the goal?

• For example, will there be a negative consequence such a losing money, a job, your reputation?

• If you quit your job to start your own business, what happens if you are not committed to the work involved in setting up and running it?

COMMITMENT 2• What will be the positive results of being

committed to your course of action?• More money?• Fame?• A promotion?• Motivation and commitment are specific to your

• The more personal you make your motivation and commitment to each goal, the more motivated you will be to accomplish your goal.

BE FLEXIBLE• Be ready to re-adjust your goals and not give
