Cleveland College of Art & Design is one of the 14 colleges offering the opportunity for 14-16 year olds to participate in the National Art and Design Saturday Club (NADSC). As the only art and design college in the region, we are able to offer 30 weeks of inspiring art classes, from sculpture to textiles, to jewellery and digital art. The Sorrell Foundation is the inspiration behind NADSC which also provides master classes by some of the UK’s foremost artists and designers, such as Antony Gormley, Thomas Heatherwick and Simon Waterfall.

As part of the unique package the members also take part in a major exhibition in Somerset House, London. The aim is to nurture young people’s talents, and give students expert specialist knowledge of further, higher education and careers in the creative industries. The creative industries are the largest growing industries in the country and still the envy of the world.

In November 2011 our outstanding students exhibited portraits at Somerset House.Their work was exhibited with fourteen other colleges and universities, and although not a competition, the work was outstanding from CCAD.

Currently we have young people from over 13 schools attending CCAD on a Saturday. Over 50 young people have taken part this year which is a 50% increase from previous years.

Amanda Smith who runs the Saturday Club said: “It is a really fantastic opportunity for young people to work with professional artists, and international artists, using professional industry standard equipment. They explore a wide range of skills, from spray painting, carnival sculpture to textiles and digital art, in a friendly atmosphere. It is wonderful to see their confidence increase over the 30 weeks, with the finale being the summer exhibition at Somerset House. When exhibiting with 14 other colleges and universities these young people are a credit to the region and can stand proud against all others from across the country.”

jumping for Joyce

Joyce Quinn, second year Textiles student, has exhibited her work in the Hartlepool Art Gallery!

Joyce displayed her textile designs at the Hartlepool Art Gallery after winning the Walter Parker Award. The award is for the most talented and creative artists in the town.

The Walter Parker award was introduced in 2006. This award recognises outstanding drawing, painting and preparation work in all disciplines within the art and design curriculum.

President of Hartlepool Art Club Margaret Wiles said “We first saw Joyce’s textile designs when she was a pupil at St Hild’s School in the town and they definitely stood out. Her work was very different and exciting. She showed great potential and it is lovely to be able to feature her designs in our annual exhibition, as well as use them on all of our promotional material for the event.”

Joyce has also seen her work displayed before some of the world’s top fashion houses after having being selected to showcase her designs at last year’s Indigo trade fair in Paris.

“This is my first major exhibition and I was really excited.” said Joyce

“Being selected to show my designs in Paris was incredible but having the opportunity to exhibit in my own home town is something pretty special.

“The art club allowed me to display three of my designs; a beaded floral digital print, a magic touch cotton fabric with embellished beetles and dragonflies and a repeat leaf print heat transfer. I have already had a lot of good comments from people viewing my pieces and I hope that this is the first of many exhibitions to come.”

Well done to Andrew Bell who picked up top prize in an animation live brief.

CCAD and Pimlico Plumbers, the UK’s largest independent plumbing company, teamed up to create a series of unique online animations.

The London-based company challenged our Interactive Media students to create promotional web-based animations. It was designed to give the students experience of dealing with a commercial commission including meeting deadlines and translating a customer brief.

Based around Pimlico Plumbers’ Managing Director Charlie Mullins, who starred in Channel 4’s Secret Millionaire and is known as the ‘plumber to the stars’ for his celebrity client list, the animations will appear on the internet and be used for marketing campaigns.

Andrew Bell, 18 from Stockton, picked up the top prize of £250 for his celebrity-filled animation, which is being used as Pimlico Plumbers 2011 e-Christmas card. The animation features Charlie rescuing a celebrity party attended by, among others, Elton John, Susan Boyle and Jedward from a burst pipe!

Second place and £150 went to Richard Desmond 17, from Thorntree, for his ‘Heavenly Plumber’ animation.

Third prize of £100 was presented to Bethany Wood, 18 from Redcar, for her joke-based animation about a seal in a basin.

A further five students were presented with £50 each and their animations will be used by Pimlico Plumbers on its website and for other promotional purposes.

Andrew said: “I am really pleased Charlie loves my animation. I really enjoyed the project, which got all of the group thinking about how we can apply our creative skills to meet the commercial requirements of a business.”

Charlie Mullins, Managing Director of Pimlico Plumbers, said: “As a plumber by trade I didn’t know much about viral animations, but what these students have come up with has been spectacular. I was amazed with the quality of their work and how they have understood our business and the messages we project to our customers.”

Andrew Conway, Interactive Media Course Leader said: “It’s important for our students to understand how to deliver a commercial brief. Many will work for design agencies in the future where they will have to interpret a client brief creatively while meeting the branding guidelines and commercial focus of the company.

All the animations can be viewed on our YouTube page at www.youtube.com/user/ccadvideo

young designer of the year 2011

Charlotte Wood has joined the glitterati of the fashion world after being named Clothes Show Young Designer of the Year.

Charlotte triumphed over 50,000 other entries in the prestigious national competition to find the best emerging talent in the UK.

Charlotte was presented with her trophy, £1,000 prize money and one week’s work experience with a top fashion designer after showcasing her design on the catwalk in the final of the Clothes Show Live at the NEC Birmingham.

“I still can’t believe it. I’m shocked and overwhelmed. It’s just amazing. I’m absolutely thrilled,” said Charlotte.

“I was at the Clothes Show last year and saw other designers entering the awards but I never imagined seeing my dress on one of the catwalks, let alone winning. As I was the only non degree student amongst the final ten it makes it all the more incredible.”

Charlotte’s full length gothic evening gown, made to fit the competition brief of producing an A-list celebrity red carpet dress, was inspired by the dark trends for autumn and winter, combined with religious architecture.

“I wanted the design of my dress to conjuror up images of light falling through church windows so I created a pattern cut, velvet fabric, which I had to cut, sew, steam and tailor to a model, all in nine days,” said Charlotte.

“As well as making my dress, I also produced a tailored white shirt. This was a challenge but made me aware of what would be expected of me when I work in the fashion industry.

Judge and stylist to the stars Karl Willett, who presented Charlotte with her award, said: “I knew that Charlotte’s dress would be something special just from seeing her sketches.

“Her design was beautifully executed well made and sleek. It completely stood out and fitted the brief more so than any of the other finalists, being understated but edgy at the same time.”

“I’m currently applying to Central St Martins to study a fashion degree while working part time in Topshop which has been great for getting to know the business side of the industry,” said Charlotte.

Page 7: Canvas Magazine - Winter 2012

CANVAS 7

“It’s always been important for me to pursue a creative career with realistic job opportunities in a fast paced and lucrative industry. Fashion is a way that I can release that creativity by designing wearable clothes and making people look and feel fabulous.”

“Seeing my design on the catwalk was absolutely incredible, exactly what dreams are made of.”

Course Leader of the Extended Diploma in Fashion & Clothing Naomi Austin said: “The whole of the fashion team at CCAD are absolutely thrilled that Charlotte has won this competition.

“She really deserves the recognition so much and has been an absolute pleasure to teach. Charlotte is very professional in everything she does and is also very unassuming; a quality which I think will see her go very far.

“For her to win this award is testament to the quality and standards that we expect on the course from tutors, who are still very much involved in the fashion industry, to the top class industry standard equipment and machinery that is available to the students.

Principal Martin Raby said: “Charlotte’s achievement is marvellous and the result of a lot of effort as well as design talent. As a further education student who has succeeded ahead of degree students from all over the country, she demonstrates the obvious benefits of attending the North East’s only specialist art and design institution. Our excellent facilities and highly experienced staff mean that our students make outstanding progress.”

bake my day

Eddy Maynard, second year Photography student, has six photographs from his collection on display in Topshop, Middlesbrough! This is part of a scheme to encourage local artists to promote their work in the town.

Eddy is the first of eight CCAD photography students to exhibit inside the store in a project that will run until the end of July 2012.

Eddy’s six artworks form an eclectic mixture, from landscapes to abstract portraiture.

Eddy said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity to have my photographs on display in somewhere as popular as Topshop. They specifically said that they wanted different pieces, not typically Topshop and not fashion related, so I have chosen a real mix of work to give people a taste of what I can do.

“I felt really proud when I saw them all up on the wall and have already had quite a few good comments on Facebook. The exposure will be great for my portfolio and to get my name recognised as a young photographer in the town.”

Photography lecturer Phil Rodriguez said: “This scheme offers great exposure for our students and makes the work that they have been doing here in the college really come to life. Topshop is one of the busiest retail outlets in the town and Eddy and the other students will have their work seen by thousands of people every day. It also shows a good example of the breadth of diversity and professionalism that is actively encouraged among all of our students here in the photography department.”

A sweet treat project has proved the icing on the cake for a team of young photographers.Five second year photography students have been getting their teeth into a gourmet brief to help promote local catering firm Bake My Day.

The North East-based family run business, which supplies candy buffets, dessert tables, celebration and cup cakes, candy carts and vintage tea party food, set the students the task of photographing their confectionary treats.

The project, part of a college collaboration with local businesses, including Ye Olde Young Tea Shop, Mima Art Gallery and CCAD Marketing Department, aims to give young photographers the chance to work to a professional live brief.

Students were tasked with taking on the roles of Photographers, Copywriters, Photoshop Editor, Designer and Communications Lead.

Project Manager Catherine Sawden said: “It’s been a really interesting brief. We were given three weeks to complete the project, which involved liaising with the different companies, setting up the studio shoots and editing the final pictures before presenting them to the client.”

Design Lead for the team Daniel Ludford said: “It’s been a great experience working within a studio setting and using all of the equipment available here, including lights, backdrops, reflectors and various types of digital and film cameras. Although we each have a specific role in the project we have all been taking our own individual photographs, which we will be able to use in our portfolios to show future clients.”

The final selection of images will be used to help promote the Bake My Day website and will also be reprinted on promotional material including business cards and flyers.

Forty nine first year Graphic Design students were set a live brief for the Greyhound Rescue and Co-ordinated Emergencies (GRACE). The brief was to design a logo. Meg Arthur’s logo design was chosen by GRACE and will be used on their promotional material.

GRACE, a non-profit making organisation based in Redcar & Cleveland, rescues, rehabilitates and re-homes greyhounds and lurchers from local authority dogs’ homes that have been abandoned or found straying.

CCAD Graphic Design Course Leader Chris Beadle said: “I saw for myself the incredible work that GRACE do, providing these animals with a life saving refuge, and offered the organisation the opportunity to have our students design them a new logo to raise awareness and help with their fundraising.”

“We usually have around 35 live briefs every year but this was the first one that we set our new students and they came up with some outstanding work,” said Chris.

“We like to get our first years working on something from week one to teach them how to work to deadlines and liaise with clients, to convince them that they have what it takes to become valued designers.”

Meg added: “I love dogs and my cousin has a greyhound, so I know how lovely they are. I wanted to capture their cheeky personality as well as their friendly loveable nature. I’m really pleased that GRACE chose my logo and I’m looking forward to seeing it go on display.” Meg has since had fantastic feedback on her designs all the way from America!

Graphics students have landed a major gig to create new tee-shirt designs for rock and blues vocalist Deborah Bonham, the sister of the late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham.

Deborah has toured and performed with Van Halen, Alannah Myles, Tim Rose, Uli Jon Roth, Humble Pie, Donovan, Lonnie Donegan, Jools Holland, Foreigner and Paul Rodgers. She is currently recording in Nashville, Tennessee, before touring Europe with her new album.

Interactive Media tutor Dave Hill, who is also Deborah’s manager, said: “Deborah was keen to have some fresh new design ideas for her latest tour merchandise, so I approached Graphic Design Course Leader Chris Beadle to see if his students could come up with ideas to meet Deborah’s brief.

“As she is out in the USA recording at the moment we had to send the designs to her at the studios in Nashville. She was thrilled that the students had really got what she and her music are all about.”

Owen Smith, Holly Baggott and Lucy Tranter will now work with Dave and Deborah to come up with the final designs to be used for global tee-shirt sales and on the star’s website.

Holly said: “I didn’t know much about Deborah before the brief, just that her favourite colour was purple and that she liked Celtic designs, so I did a lot of research and I’m thrilled that she liked my work.”

Owen said: “I’d love to work within the music industry and it is a tremendous honour, as a young designer, to already have had my work chosen by an established recording artist.

Chris Beadle added: “I am particularly pleased that our students’ work will now be seen internationally. At a time when they are thinking about moving on to university this will be a great addition to their portfolios.”

In the frame... Ba(Hons)Textiles and Surface Design

THREE graduates have designs on a bright future after being selected for a prestigious national award.

Newly graduated from BA (Hons) Textiles and Surface Design, Joy Herman, Colleen Ellington and Rachel Hagger have all been short-listed from 140 entries for the finals of the New Design Britain Awards.

The designers will have the chance to have their work displayed at Interiors UK 2012 and the winner will win a placement with a leading industry supplier. The finalists comprise a group of 16 designers who will compete to impress the judges.

Joy, of York, said: “I couldn’t believe it when I received the call to tell me I had got through to the final.“It would be wonderful to win. But to be honest I already feel like a winner just being short-listed out of so many people; and it’s an opportunity that could lead to great things.”

Joy is listed in the fabrics category of the contest and has designed a repeat furnishing fabric pattern called Bricks, using linen, cotton and earthy colours.Fellow finalist Colleen, of Eaglescliffe, Yarm, who is also in the fabrics category, has developed a design featuring a South African Kudu, using greens and blues printed on velvet.

She said: “It would be fantastic to win but the whole experience of the competition has been amazing.”

Taking her influence from her roots in Johannesburg, Colleen is particularly proud that she has been able to get this far with inspiration from her home country.“I still have family in South Africa and they are so proud that I have come so far in this competition,” she said.

“My work is bespoke and very different and I am over the moon that it has been recognised like this.”

Rachel is short-listed in the surface coverings category with her wallpaper design featuring architectural structures, showing linear drawings, using blues, browns, yellows and reds.

The 23-year-old, of Darlington, said: “I am very excited to be in the final and it would mean so much to me to win.“But the fact that my ideas have been selected and I have got this far is just amazing; I am very happy.”

Tutor Claire Baker said: “I always encourage students to enter competitions as it tests their self-motivation, commitment to the industry, their ability to fulfil briefs and meet strict deadlines.“I am absolutely ecstatic that these students have done so well in this competition as their professional practice has been exemplary. I wish them the very best of luck with the Interiors 2012 show.”

BA (Hons) Textiles and Surface Design graduate, Lauren Grainger was celebrating with festivity before the holidays, after designing a collection of Christmas decorations for Marks and Spencer.

Lauren, 23, of Ingleby Barwick, said: “It was surreal when I found out they wanted to use my designs; it was an amazing feeling to walk into the stores and see my work on the shelves.”

During her final year at college Lauren was chosen to go to the New Designers exhibition in London, which gave her the chance to showcase her creative talent and build connections with the industry.

“When I was in London, Marks and Spencer’s sole supplier Tigerprint came to talk to me and said they liked the work I was doing,” said Lauren.“When I returned home, I got a call from them to ask if I would like to do a placement in their design studio in Bradford, which was just brilliant.

Lauren was also offered a freelance contract with the high street store. Lauren’s Christmas designs included gift wrapping, Christmas tree baubles, crackers, gift boxes and gift tags. Well done Lauren!

BA (Hons) Textiles & Surface Designers were given a live assignment to work alongside a highly-reputable business: Trendbible to create original pieces for their Trend Books.

The 2nd year group wowed the ‘future-trend’ forecasting company when all their final artwork was presented to and judged by the Creative Director, Jo Feeley. The successful pieces selected by the judge will now be incorporated in the company’s latest trend journals. Jo was really amazed by their final outcomes, “The quality of the drawn work was particularly strong and we were impressed with the very strong focus on primary imagery, which we find to be a rarity in undergraduate work”.

The (hugely-sought-after) journals provide an insight into key themes – a few years from now, and will be used for the Home Interiors and Kid’s Lifestyle sectors from the UK to USA.Jo added, “We were delighted to see such high levels of professionalism from the students, who were all asked to work to a confidentiality agreement with us on trends forecast intended for two years time”.

This has been, yet another, perfect opportunity for our students to forge strong links within the creative industry and gain valuable feedback on their current work.

Trendbible: “We would love to be involved with the course again next year and look forward to publicising our work with the students.”

CCAD students at the top of the Transporter Bridge with Stephen Gill.

PHOTOGRAPHERS are feeling on top of the world after getting a bird’s eye view from the top of one of the region’s most famous bridges.

Students studying a BA (Hons) Photography degree joined in the centenary celebrations of the Transporter Bridge in Middlesbrough by spending exclusive time with well- known photographer Stephen Gill at the top of the iconic structure.

The students climbed the 210 steps to capture images in their own creative styles from an unforgettable vantage point.

Student Benjamin Sadler, 32, of Shildon, said: “It was amazing, we could see for miles, we could even see birds flying beneath us and we could see all the workings of the bridge. You don’t get that viewpoint from anywhere else.

“It was also fantastic to hear comments from a professional in the industry about our work and he helped us to improve our shots, which was just great.” Stephen, originally from Middlesbrough, is currently involved in a project about Teesside’s industrial works and was keen to help students in his home town.

Matthew Jarrett, 22, of Stockton, said: “It was great to get a chance to work with Stephen and to see what people are like in the industry. He was great to talk to and his advice is invaluable to us.”

Benjamin added: “Stephen suggested slight alterations to my shots and I picked his brains about metering.

“He showed us things that could take us months to pick up; it was also a good yardstick to be able to see where we are in comparison to him.”

Tutor and programme leader Jamie MacDonald said: “Stephen approached me recently while researching the Transporter project and was keen to get our students involved. “I brought him over to our Hartlepool campus at CCAD as a visiting lecturer. The students were inspired by his work and enthusiasm. We also did a shoot, visiting some of the locations around the Transporter Bridge where Stephen photographed.

“One of these was the top of the Transporter where Stephen was giving a master-class about composition and how to use the camera. What a fantastic learning experience. For those who didn’t fancy the climb up, there was also the opportunity to work with Stephen at ground level, visiting some other places he also photographed.”

A TALENTED designer has captivated one of the greatest emporiums on the high street with her unique style.

Helen Stevens, a former student and graduate of BA (Hons) Textiles and Surface Design, has reason to celebrate after being spotted by Liberty.

Liberty, which started in the centre of London in 1875, remains one of the most influential leaders in innovative design and is the ultimate choice for the sophisticated shopper.

Helen, 31, of Nunthorpe, said: “It’s a dream come true. To get work into Liberty is amazing. The opportunity is fantastic and having their name behind me is a real positive thing to have in this industry; I am over the moon.”

Helen recently started her company, Surfacephilia, and decided to take her work to the London Design Festival to launch it.“I couldn’t believe it when one of the first people who came over to look at my work was a representative from Liberty’s and when she said she wanted all of my five wallpaper designs it was just incredible,” said Helen.

Specialising in wallpaper and bone china, Helen designed a theme based on Native American tribes, using appealing colour palettes, featuring nature, mystical woodland creatures, feathers and birds.Helen said: “I like to try and bring as much innovation into my work as possible which is tricky with flat print, so I like to push boundaries by using elaborate patterns. “I like to develop a not so obvious repeat pattern in the wallpaper by using an unusual mix of colours, which gives unexpected twists to my work.”

Helen had high praise for the Textiles Programme. She said: “It was perfect for me as it was a drawing-based course, so every project I was involved in allowed me to continue with my strongest skill.

“The College has great links with industry too and encourages you to get involved, which is exactly what I’ve done and it has completely paid off for me.”

Jayne Dennis, a graduate of FdA Commercial Photography, is snapping up awards as she casts her keen eye on the international stage. So far, she has won 16 national and international awards for her photography work.

The 39-year-old, of Thirsk, said: “I couldn’t believe it when I did so well in my first competition; I was on top of the world.”

She said she was encouraged to enter competitions by her tutors and was pleased she had after collecting a string of accolades. These included the London Photographic Association Award, the PX3 de la Photographie in Paris, the Worldwide Photography Gala Awards and the Australian Better Photography Magazine Award.

Jayne said: “The icing on the cake was being a finalist in the Worldwide Photography Gala Awards. An estimated 17,000 people entered so to be recognised was just fantastic.

“My work has been included in their latest book. It is amazing to think that someone sitting in their living room in America could be looking at my work and reading about me.”

She has just returned from working in Australia, where her career is really taking off.

“I like doing things differently and I had chance to do some aerial photography of the rainforests of Far North Queensland hanging out of a helicopter – that was awesome,” she said. Her work featuring Tim Andrews was exhibited at The Guernsey Photography festival 2011 and her latest

achievement was winning an honour in the Black and White Spider Awards, a leading international competition honouring excellence in black and white photography.

Judged by a high-powered panel, including representatives from Sotheby’s and Magnum and Tate, Jayne won a prize for her work Nude in the Woods, in a contest that attracted 40,000 entries.

She said: “It was just mind blowing when I received the email to say I had won an award. Once again I couldn’t believe it, but I was so proud. Now I just don’t know what is around the corner and it is just so exciting.”

And if that wasn’t enough, Jayne has recently been told that two of her photographs will feature in Professional Photographer Magazine in January for the previous months round up of Professional Photographer of the Year Awards.

Name: Sean WalshTitle: Catering Manager Sean Walsh joined us in August 2011 as the new Catering Manager for both sites at CCAD. We wanted to find out a little bit more about the man behind the delicious food served at the College. What was your first impression of CCAD?The biggest thing that stands out to me is how everyone is treated as an individual, both staff and students. The College is really friendly and people are free to express themselves without being judged. What did you do before life at CCAD?I was previously working as a Chef in the Army, so coming to the College was a bit of change!I got to travel all over the world, preparing meals from between 10 to 3,000 people depending on the occasion. My most favourite place was working in Seattle, where I cooked for a solid 6 week period for the paratroopers. Tell us about a typical day for you?Well, I start with a meeting between the catering team and discuss plans on the days menu. I spend a lot of time structuring meal plans for the week and negotiating with suppliers to get the best deal so we can pass this onto the students.

OK, so what recipe would you recommend for our students to try at home?MEATBALLS – Delicious and simple to make (see below) You will need:· 350g pack lean beef steak mince· 1 teaspoon dried mixed herbs· 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed· 1 tablespoon olive oil· 1 x 440g jar basics tomato pasta sauce· 350g basics spaghetti· 350g carrots, peeled and chopped· 350g basics frozen British garden peas· 30g British mild Cheddar, finely grated Method1. In a bowl, mix together the mince, herbs and garlic, then

shape into 12 balls. Heat the oil in a pan and cook the meatballs for 10 minutes over a medium heat, turning, until golden.

2. Pour in the pasta sauce. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 10 minutes. If the sauce is a little thick, add a few tablespoons of boiling water.

3. Meanwhile, cook the pasta in a pan of boiling water, following pack instructions, then drain.

4. Meanwhile, cook the carrots in a pan of boiling water for 8 minutes, adding the peas for the final 2 minutes, then drain and stir into the meatballs.

5. Serve the spaghetti in bowls, topped with the meatballs and tomato sauce and sprinkled with Cheddar cheese.

Have you had any unusual meal requests so far? They have all been really sensible up to now, but probably the most unusual combination I’ve been asked for is Boiled Rice and Gravy... each to their own, eh? The £1.50 specials have been so popular, what’s your favourite? It’s got to be Jacket Potato and Beans. This is really nutritious and a healthy option for those who want something tasty and excellent value for money.
