appy New Year! Can you feel the ex-citement? This year is definitely go-

ing to be better than the last. This year, we will establish new pathways to success and develop key allies that believe in our vision. We are committed and fully believe in what tomorrow has to offer. Are you?

We do not know what the next day holds but whether good or bad, there will be progression. If bad, we will learn to better overcome adversity and use the experience to weather future storms. If good, we will be thankful for what we have been given and put it to good use for ourselves and for those around us.

What do you do with your experiences? It’s not easy to think positive about every negative situation or happenstance that we may encounter but if we can will ourselves to glean every bit of knowledge that comes with struggle then we can never truly move backwards but always forward.

This issue would not be possible without most importantly our Creator, Mom and Dad, the Canvas Magazine staff, and our un-believeable advertisers.

See you in March!

How did you two meet? We were introduced by a mutual friend at one of Arnold’s parties at House of Blues in 2006.

What are some turnoffs? What are some turn-ons? Arnold: I was attracted to Taya’s beauty - love at first sight and (legs), smile and sense of humor. Taya: It was Arnold’s humor, swagger and positive outlook on life.

Where did you go on your first date and what were your first thoughts when the date was over? Arnold brought Johnny Mango’s take out (chicken quesadillas) to my apart-ment. Arnold claims his first thought af-ter was “This is wifey!” I thought that he was a very interesting person and I truly enjoyed our conversation and how easy he was to talk to.

The most romantic thing you’ve done for each other? Arnold took me to Walden Inn & Stables to celebrate our 1 year anniversary. The room was beautiful with roses on the bed, chilled champagne and a jacuzzi tub. I surprised Arnold with a day date and took him to a massage at Aveda, breakfast after then we got pedicures complete with champagne and strawberries.

The perfect first date? Be support-ive and make time for each other, laugh a lot, have fun, travel together, have date nights often and keep things new and fresh by switching things up.

Tell us about yourself. I was born and raised in the Lee/Harvard area. I’ve had a plan for my life since I was about 15yrs old, when my dad told me to learn how to work smarter and not harder and you can achieve great things in life. Outside of CWRU, I also own Minor Creations Creative Learning Center and Before & After Center in Maple Heights.

Describe your typical work day? No two days are the same for me. Thats why I enjoy what I do. One day, I am creating virtual servers for the CWRU departments. The next day, meeting with my accountant and inter-viewing people for Minor Creations. Never a dull moment.

Why is your job important? At CWRU, my team and I maintain the systems and services that make the campus daily activities function from day to day. These services include being able to get on the internet, class registration, payroll and virtual seminars just to name a few.

What advice do you have for people seeking a similar career path? Don’t be afraid to ask for more work or responsibilty. Too many people today are lazy and wonder why they don’t get that raise or promo-tion or get very far in life in general.

What is the salary range for your position? $42,000 to $62,000 per year.

What’s your favorite quote? “A dream written down with a specific date becomes a goal. A goal broken down into steps becomes a plan. A plan backed by action, makes your dream come true.”

DID YOU KNOW?

D

Find out more about Breast Cancer Awareness at CanvasCleveland.com

ID YOU KNOW? African American women are more likely than all oth-

er women to die from breast cancer. Tu-mors are found at a later, more advanced, stage so there are fewer treatment op-tions. Some reasons for this include not following-up after getting abnormal test results, the belief that mammograms are not needed, or not having insurance.

Breast cancer can’t be prevented. But there are things you can do to reduce your risk, such as keeping a healthy weight and limiting how much alcohol you drink.

There are things you can do to find breast cancer early. Breast cancer screen-ing looks for signs of cancer before a woman has symptoms. Screening can help find breast cancer early when it’s most treatable. Two tests are commonly used to screen for breast cancer:

Mammogram. A safe, low-dose x-ray exam of the breasts to look for changes that aren’t normal. Starting at age 40, women should have screening mammo-grams every 1-2 years. Depending on fac-tors such as family history and your gen-eral health, your doctor may recommend a mammogram before age 40.

Clinical breast exam (CBE). The doctor looks at and feels the breasts and under the arms for lumps or anything else that seems unusual.

Regular screening is the best way to find breast cancer early in most women. If you are at higher risk you may need mammo-grams at an earlier age or more often. Or, your doctor might want to use other tests too.

Josh Cribbs of the Cleveland Browns and his wife Maria talk about what it takes to make marriage work even with the distractions of professional football right over their shoulder.

LOVE + MARRIAGEx FOOTBALL

Page 17: Canvas Monthly Magazine - February Issue

17

he 30-day Hollywood marriages, reality television shows and high divorce rates that fill depictions of

relationships today often cause us to lose track of the true definition of courtship and unconditional love that should define our intimate interactions.

Our soul mates don’t come with instruction manuals that teach us how to find immedi-ate perfection, which means that we must find that perfection within our significant other through trial, error and compromise.

We recently sat down with Josh Cribbs of the Cleveland Brown and his wife Maria to discuss the ends and outs of relationships and marriage.

How did you guys meet? Josh: I first met Maria when she won the best-dressed contest at Kent State’s annual Renaissance Ball. When I first saw her I was with some members of my team and I asked them did they know of her and they said, “Man, you don’t want her, she’s wifey material,” which basically meant that she was hard to get and that she wasn’t easy.

I knew I wanted her and she would say that I stalked her because she says that I was in the background of all of her pictures from that night. After that night I found out that we had a mutual friend, who happened to be my resident advisor in my dorm, and we ended up meeting and exchanging numbers through her.

What initially attracted you to one another? Maria: When I used to work at the Kent State recreation center, I would see all the guys being loud and obnoxious. Josh was kind of quiet and really patient with the mannerisms of an older more mature guy. That’s what I liked!

Josh: It was her smile. It was her presence. Its like just being around her felt like she was the life of the party. When I first met her, every one flocked around her, she was the

T center of attention, and a good conversa-tionalist that always talked about things that were interesting. Last, I would say her eyes because when I looked in her eyes I kind of got lost and from that moment I knew…

Where did you go on your first date? Maria: Where did we go on our first date?

Josh: See, you don’t even remember but I do! Our first date was the worst ever for me. We were at this eating/karaoke club at Kent State where a lot of students go to hang out and relax. It was karaoke night and I felt like I could win her over if I sang a little bit, so I requested to sing, “I’ll Make Love to You” by Boys 2 Men. When I got up there I made the mistake of reading from the teleprompter even though I knew the words to the song.

The teleprompter only confused me and I ended up replacing the part that says, “I will do anything…” with “I will do any girl…” and my heart just dropped because I was so embarrassed. After that I tried to redeem myself by taking her in the hallway and sing-ing for her in private. That worked out bet-ter for me and I knew I had her after that.

How did you know he/she was the one? Maria: I knew right then and there. After we met we would spend everyday to-gether. Either I would be at his dorm or he would be at mine. We did not want to leave each other’s site and normally I get sick of people but with him it was always something interesting, something new or we had some-thing good to talk about. That’s how I knew and I think it was pretty instant.

Josh: I have criteria that help me figure out if a woman is right for me. One of my criteria is not getting tired or bored with a wom-

18 CANVAS FEBRUARY ’10

an and I never got tired with Maria sexu-ally. Sexual chemistry is important. I never got tired of seeing her every single day and every time I kissed her it was like the first time. I still felt tingles and nervousness every time we kissed and even now we still turn each other on with just kissing.

Another major criteria for me was fresh breath and one major reason I knew she was the one was when her breath didn’t stink in the morning. That’s like a really big thing for me, so that along with our chemistry let me know she was the one and since then there hasn’t been a dull moment.

Who wears the pants?Josh: She does!Maria: He does, I’m just the belt.

What are some of the difficulties you face with Josh being a profes-sional athlete? Maria: I’ve been with Josh since before the NFL so when he started playing professional football I felt like I had to share my husband with agents, coaches, and teammates. Marriage is a challenge ev-eryday for us but we love each other. I think that marriages with professional athletes do have it harder because of the women, temp-tations and distractions involved with the industry.

Josh: It’s a challenge because of the distrac-tions. We had to make it up in our heads that we would stay together no matter what. We’re not like a Hollywood couple that married because of status or we didn’t get married because we had a kid, we got married in college only because we loved each other.

How do you work on staying faith-ful to one another? Maria: Late night talks, vacationing, going to church, praying together and doing a lot of family things.

Josh: Just being an open book by eliminat-ing factors like females calling my phone and just being open with my wife. We spend a lot

Read the rest of our interview with Josh & Maria Cribbs at CanvasCleveland.com

of time together. We go out to the clubs to-gether, whatever we do we’re together and it leaves no room for the distractions.

Maria: It seems like Josh being a married, professional athlete makes him a minority in the locker room. He has a problem finding people with the same values that encour-age relationships because all the guys in the locker room are young and single.

Most romantic thing each of you has done for the other? Josh: I had just came home from practice and when I got home she had candles and rose pedals lead-ing to the bathroom and all over the bed. It was like something you see on TV. We took a bath together then she gave me a massage on a massage table that she had bought. Then she ruined it all by giving my little daughter a 30-minute massage after she did me, which kind of ruined the mood.

Maria: It was during Josh’s training camp and my friend had called me to tell me that Josh really wanted me to go to his practice that particular day. I am always late everywhere I go so she told me to be there thirty minutes early and I still ended up being late. So as I’m rushing into the facility and trying to explain to my friend why I’m late, I hear a plane en-gine roaring over my head. I look up and it says, “Happy 6 Year Anniversary Maria from Josh.” I heard all the fans start cheering and for the entire day everyone at the training camp kept wishing me a happy anniversary.

Best marriage/relationship advice?Maria: Pick and choose your battles.

Josh: There is no reneging in marriage. If you start something see it through and compro-mise. Find out what matters most to your significant other and trying to find a way to satisfy it. You’ll get further if you figure out what bothers your partner the most and work to avoid situations like that.

finding successFew restaurants find success, and even fewer grow. We recent-ly sat down with Greg Beckham of Beckham’s B&M Barbe-cue to find his secret to success.

Page 21: Canvas Monthly Magazine - February Issue

21

rom humble beginnings, B&M Barbe-cue has grown exponentially since the day it was founded by Eddie

Beckham & James Mitchell in 1958. The Beckham’s B&M Barbecue brand under the ownership of Gregory Beckham is now a local force competing with chains such as Popeyes and Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Having expanded from the initial Shaw loca-tion that he inherited from his father, Greg’s B&M cooking can be found at numerous restaurants and satelite locations through-out Cleveland and Akron including The Word Church and Thistledown.

What’s the reason for your suc-cess? God is the reason for my success. He’s the one giving me the strength. My dad taught me well, taught me a trade, some-thing that no one could take away from me. That’s what was instilled in me. Food is my life. I enjoy cooking and doing parties, its not even like work for me anymore.

I have a strong wife that pushed me. She’s a key to my business and success. I had actu-ally got out of the business when my dad passed but I told her I saw the place on Lee road. I told her if I could get that place, then I would open another restaurant. She walked up and down the street and found out who had the business, and the rest is history.

What’s the best advice your father ever gave you? Treat people right, the way you want to be treated. Your product is gonna sell itself. Maintain your product and keep it right. You don’t have to overprice anyone and it will sell. Also be proud of who you are and take pride in what you do..

Talk about some of the struggles you’ve faced in expanding your business and growing the Beck-ham’s B&M brand? Our Warrensville location used to be a Donato’s, now its one of my biggest restaurants. They want-ed a franchise, someone with a name like a McDonalds to be here. I showed them

F my product and twisted their arm to get in. Once they saw how we were good for the community, I’ve been getting calls from other cities and municipalities. All I needed was a chance. The rest speaks it for itself.

It’s a struggle. You have to prove yourself, you have to be determined. I save my money and invest it. I put it away and I was blessed so I’d have enough money to put down on a place and get in - then the money comes in.

Investing is the most important thing. That’s my goal to create jobs for people during this recession and let people grow. We have health benefits and insurance, we do all of the those things for our employees. Just something to try to uplift so that they can have a career in this. I’d like for all my own people to control their own place and be a manager as long as they do what’s necessary to keep the business afloat..

What tips do you have for other restauranteurs? Cleanliness is impor-tant. Everyone thinks they can open up a restaurant because they cook good. It takes getting your product out there, it takes hard work and determination. Have a unique taste and be dedicated. Be consistent with your recipes.

Also, if you have the best chicken and no-body knows then what? Marketing is key, you have to put your name out there and people have to inquire about it. Everywhere I go, I’m advertising. When I’m out having fun, I want to be advertising who I am.

What’s next? In the next 2-3 years we’ll have product in the stores. We’ll have sauce in the next month or so at all of the top gro-cery stores. Right now, I’m just forumlating and getting everything branded.

Franchising is the next goal. My goal is to get systematic and develop a system to franchise, then fly around and teach other people how to do it.
