ove. They talk about it on TV. They singabout it in songs. In love, loving, and

love for always, it doesnt matter how youslice it, two things remain about love. It aint

    easy and its not natural.

Hold up! What does he mean? You see, itsnot in our nature to love, although we sayand sing of it often. Let me ask this, howpatient and kind are you? Are you easily an-gered or jealous? Do you trust and hope inthose who dont do the same for you? Tolove means to exhibit an unnatural type of

strength that ghts ones own ego and self-interest whether it be in business or per-sonal relationships.

We must love despite ourselves. We mustsacrice immediate retribution for immedi-ate forgiveness. Love your neighbors, jobs, superviors, and adversaries. Martin LutherKing Jr. said it best, Hatred darkens life, loveilluminates it. Love never fails.

This issue would not be possible withoutmost importantly our Creator, Mom andDad, the Canvas Magazine staff, and our un-believeable advertisers.

    See you in June!

Now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Tell us about yourself. Im originally from Manning, South Car-olina. As a young girl, I loved singing. There was no doubt that Iwould be doing something in music when I got older. Ive worked

with numerous artists including Diddy, T.I., Keyshia Cole, Young Jeezy and The Dream with whom I will be going on tour this year.

Describe your typical work day? My day usually consists of confer-ence calls with major record labels, reports, going over calendars for promoruns, visiting retail, dealing with club and mix show djs. Making sure that

these artists have a presence in the market place.

Why is your job important? Im responsible for getting the word

out to the consumers before the project hits the market place. With pre-promotions, the projects have a greater chance of having better retail num-bers.

What advice do you have for people seeking a similar career

path? The music industry is denitely different from years ago. The passion

& love just isnt there anymore. Artists dont want to work, they think after

one hot single or platinum album they dont have to work the second timearound. Then with piracy going on, no one wants to buy albums anymore.

What is the salary range for your position? This depends on themarket/area your in.

Whats your favorite quote? I can do all things through Christ whichstrengtheneth me. (Philippians 4:13).

    LONNIE COLEMAN

ike a lot of young business owners, Lonnie Coleman, started out with not much

more than a hope and a dream. So far this hope and dream have resulted in athriving company, Coleman Spohn, with hands in everything from Progressive Field andQuicken Loans Arena to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Their recent client list includesUniversity Hospitals, South Pointe Hospital, and Ford Motor Company to say the least.

Mr. Coleman founded his initial company,ColeJon Corp., in 1976, as a two-man out-t which grew quickly but not in spite of

many challenges into a multifaceted 750employee operation working with NASA,Air Force, US Navy, and the EPA.

We didnt know we didnt have enoughmoney, but we stayed in it, says Cole-man. Along with tremendous amounts ofperseverance, he credits the aid of manyindividuals and organizations with hisgrowth including Clevelands Council ofSmaller Enterprises (COSE) which aids

in providing Coleman Spohn employeeswith health insurance and benets.

Can we afford it? One of the many questions families areasking this summer as gas prices rise is one of nancial lifeand death. Heres how to make your summer a good one!

ummer is coming soon and with thatmeans more families will be gettingout on the road and spending time

together whether that means quick trips to

Cedar Point or long road journeys to familyreunions all across the country. Though ourdesires to spend time with family haventchanged over the years, the economy de-nitely has made summer vacation planningdifcult with gas prices up and incomes

    down everywhere.

There are a lot of ways in which to cut backon your vacation spending but the primaryone is also the most obvious - explore yourlocal area. Ohios tourism website (www.discoverohio.com) has tons of informationto help you nd out about attractions and

events around Cleveland that you may havenever known about. Even more importantly, they have great discounts and coupons onsome of those places youve been wantingto go to but couldnt afford the expense.Coupons for military families, bed & break-

fast specials, and local resort & spa packagesare all available at the website above.

Ask yourself have you ever been to the AAAFive Diamond Award winning Walden Re-sort right outside of Cleveland? Its cheaperthan youd think and perfect for couples.

Our nal vacation tip - visit your neighbors.

Amir Eylon, Ohios director of tourism, states, More people know about whats hap-pening in Atlanta than whats taking place intheir own city or other cities in Ohio. Youdbe surprised to know how much there is todo in big cities Columbus and Cincinnati likethe Columbus Jazz & Ribs Fest or Cincin-natis Macys Musical Festival both of whichare coming up in July.

Like a lot of things in life, most things arentfree but surprisingly a lot of the in-state fes-tivals are without cost. Ohio is also hometo over 72 state parks some of which areconsidered the greatest in the nation.Theres no problem with taking the time topick up the grill and try someplace new be-

Syond your usual summer stomping grounds.Visit some place where youve never been!Youd be surprised to nd out what theres

to do when you open yourself up to lookingaround you and trying new things.

To also help out with your summer plans, weve recently linked with one local family tond out more about how they spend their

time together without breaking the bank ordigging into savings. We hope its helpful foryou as its been for us.

Tell us a little bit about your-

selves. Where are you both from?

    Profession? Number of kids?

David is a professional radio and club DJ(DJ FRESH). He works for Z107.9 (RadioOne) Tara is an Independent Provider forthe State of Ohio. Both attended ClevelandState University and obtained Bachelors de-grees Davids in Communication and Tarasin Psychology. Ebay is Taras 9 yr. old sonfrom a previous relationship. Were happily

married couple and expecting our secondchild in August.

How important is it to spend time

together as a family? Do you have

a family game night? As a family wend it very important to make family time

as well as have a date night for each other. It sets a balance to us because things canget so hectic in everyday life that when youlook up your family will be the rst to suf-fer so we set a day during the week to alldo something as a family. It usually includeswhat we call BW3 family night every Tues-

day where we eat and play a quiz trivia gameBW3 offers as a family. We also nd time to

play games at home such as Monopoly,Operation, Uno and Connect Four.

Are there any challenges you face

in juggling work and spending time

    together? How do you overcome

We fnd it very important to make

family time as well as set a date

    night with each other.

those challenges? Juggling work andfamily time isnt much of a challenge for usat all because we both have exible sched-ules. Our professions pretty much allow usto make our own schedules.

Is it more or less difcult to nd af-

    fordable family activities locally?

It is more difcult to nd family activities pe-riod in Cleveland not so much if its afford-able or not but just things to do as a familystructure. It seems like society doesnt pro-mote family living. I would love to see moreoppurtunities out here for people with fami-lies to be able to do besides go out to eat,

    movies, etc.

What are some of your favorite in-

    door/outdoor activities that you

try to do as a family? Some of our fa-vorite indoor activities include movie nightwhere we order take out and rent mov-ies from the Redbox or watch Law & Or-dermarathons all day yes Ebay too. (While

laughing) When indoors we usually act crazywith each other and have a lot of fun laugh-ing. Its something we enjoy doing as a family.Outdoors, we try to take Ebay to the parkor bar-b-que if the weather permits.

    Outside of Cleveland, what are

some of the things youve done as

a family? We love to travel. We take trips Read the rest of our interview withDavid & TaraatCanvasCleveland.com

in the summer time. Weve been to Virgin-ia, Washington DC and Canada. We are nowplanning a trip to take our son to Orlando,Florida.

How often do you guys take time

for yourselves away from the kids?

What are some of your fave ro-

mantic things to do around Cleve-

land as a couple? We do have a regulardate night where our son is not able to gowith us. It can include anything from having aromantic dinner at a nice restaurant, book-ing a hotel room for a night or two, evengoing out and just enjoying the night life in

    downtown Cleveland.

With regards to spending time to-

gether, what advice do you have for

other families? Other families shouldknow how important family is and howspending time and making time for one an-other is also important. We are considereda blended family but yet we structured our-

selves for whats important to each otherto raise our kid(s) in a happy, safe and wellground environment. Due to work, some-times parents dont have time to be a familyso we challenge others to make time as afamily for their kid(s) and spouses.

At what age do we begin to pave the way for others? In thecase of the young guys of Memories LLC, age is nothing but a

he memories and childhood pactsof Clevelands newest up and com-ing clothing line have blossomed

into the foundation for a successful venturein the fashion industry. Memories, LLC wasstarted by ve childhood friends who grew

up in Clevelands Glenville area and vowedas children not to be undertaken by the vio-lence and negative temptations known tosway area youth.

Under the direction of their mentorand primary investor, NFL Quarterbackand Heisman Trophy Winner Troy Smith, these ve young entrepreneurs have con-

cocted a fashion formula that they thinkwill ll a void in outtting and street wear.

We recently sat down with all the membersof Memories LLC and discussed their inspi-rations, goals, and overall direction for thebrand and company.

Who is Memories, LLC? Memories is

comprised of ve life long friends, Kevin, Be-nard, Tremel, Melvin and Kendall, who grewup in the inner city and were inuenced to

be successful from the good and bad memo-ries of childhood!

Why did you guys decide to start

a clothing line? Our motivation on thesurface was that we were known for being

well dressed and fashion oriented at a youngage, and we believe Cleveland has a greatvariety of people who are into fashion thatrespect are opinion on style. Underneaththose surface reasons, Memories, LLC wasfounded to honor the memory of our de-ceased friend Anthony Gordon and to showother inner city youth that there are posi-tive alternatives to obtain success.

What is your denition of style?

Style can be dened as art! Its one of the

toughest things in fashion! Its easy to buynice apparel, but how you wear something is

just as important as what you wear! What type of pieces can we look to

see from Memories, LLC rst line?

TRight now we are working on t-shirts, jacket, hoodies, pullovers and womens tops for ourrst release.

What advice do you have for the

youth who admire you? You neverknow what you are capable of doing untilyou try! Its great to be successful, but itseven more enjoyable when you overcomeall the obstacles that took a toll in the jour-ney to reach your graduated outcome!

    What separates Memories from

any other clothing line on the mar-

ket? We believe the meaning of memories

is much more genuine and respectable thanany other name brand. Its like music, peoplesometimes hear different songs and relatethem to a past time that they experienced, whether good or bad! And I feel Memoriesis the same. It has an impact on people andthings that they have been through or arepresently going through.

Why do you feel Troy Smith is help-ing Memories clothing line? Troy is thekind of guy who relates to certain situationsthat inner city individuals are going through. He is also someone who takes action, webelieve he sees characteristics of himself ineach and every one of us and would give hisall for us to have the opportunity to betterourselves in anyway possible.

Is there a motto that Memories

goes by as a group? Honesty & Loy-alty... We live by this because these twowords. No matter if its business, friendship,or marriage, you have to be able to trusteach one with your life for the success toreach its maximum capacity.

What should we look for fromMemories, LLC in the near future?

Our rst line comes later this year. We also

have, a new website, and a mix-tape comingsoon so be on the look out for that.
