There will be just over 2 weeks’ worth of games, incorporating 306 medal events
across the 42 sports with 206 countries participating.
For the very first time a refugee team will be competing – they “have no home, no
team, no flag, no national anthem” said IOC (International Olympic Committee)
president Thomas Bach. He continued, “This will be a symbol of hope for all the
refugees in our world, and will make the world better aware of the magnitude of this
crisis.”
More than 3,000 hours of coverage will be reported across BBC channels, and with
the UK being 4 hours ahead of the state of Rio de Janeiro there could be some late
nights ahead for avid viewers!
Not without its setbacks
Unfortunately, having won the bid to host the Games 10 years ago, Rio has suffered
some major setbacks during their period of final preparations.
The Zika virus broke out, which spreads mainly through mosquito bites. It is primarily
a concern for pregnant ladies and unborn children and there was even a suggestion
from doctors and professors that the Games be postponed or moved. Rory McIlroy is
the latest sportsperson to withdraw from the Games due to the virus, and only half
the expected American and Canadian spectators are making the journey which is a
blow for tourism hopes.

blow for tourism hopes.
President Dilma Rousseff was suspended for 6 months in May following charges of
corruption, having allegedly manipulated government accounts ahead of the 2014
election, and is awaiting an impeachment trial.
Doping accusations came to the forefront last November and the entire Russian track
and field team was suspended from all international competitions. Following a
meeting of the IAAF Council (International Association of Athletics Federations) on
June 17th this decision was upheld and they were formally banned from taking part in
the 2016 Olympics, Russia having failed to reform its anti-doping policies. However,
the IOC have left the door open for individual demonstrably innocent athletes to be
cleared to compete. It is still undecided whether any such participants would
compete under the Russian flag or independently.
There was an outcry when Juma the Jaguar was killed last week after she escaped
her handlers following the Olympic torch ceremony, and if all this wasn’t enough Rio
has this weekend declared a financial “state of calamity”, threatening to “cause a
total collapse of public security, health care, education, urban mobility and
environmental management” according to the state government.
Carry on Rio
The state is reshuffling its spending priorities to focus on the Olympics, so it is
unknown and possibly unthinkable what suffering local residents and workers will

endure in order for the Games to go ahead and avoid a completely shambolic
embarrassment. Time is fast running out but hopefully the acting President Michel
Temer can get Rio back on track (excuse the pun!) for the Olympics tol take place as
scheduled.
Rio is the most densely populated Brazilian state and is situated on the southeast
bordered by the Atlantic Ocean. The Tropic of Capricorn is just slightly south of Rio so
the climate is tropical, though frost is prevalent in some of the mountainous areas.
Lent brings with it the famous Carnival where they party like no other, resplendent
with vibrant colours, outfits, music and samba dancing, and of course Rio is home to
treasures such as Sugar Loaf Mountain, Copacabana beach and Cristo Redentor from
where you get a breathtaking 360° view of the city.
If you are going out to Rio remember your mosquito repellent and cover-ups, follow
