1974 - Part 8 While the curriculum has changed since 1974 the curriculum at that time was very much influenced by Dr Clarence Beeby, who was appointed Director of Education in 1940. Beeby was regarded as the architect of the modern education system. His influence has been such that although there have been various curriculum changes in the last 40 years, the influence of Beeby is evident today. It was Beeby who wrote the egalitarian creed espoused by Prime Minister Peter Fraser and he dedicated his life to fulfilling it, namely: "Every person, whatever the level of his academic ability, whether he be rich or poor, whether he live in town or country, has the right, as a citizen, to a free education of a kind for which he is best suited and to the fullest extent of his powers."

While there has been widespread debate about how equitable our education is, the approach that Beeby took to reforming the New Zealand curriculum to ensure it was as inclusive as possible for all students is very much evident today. As I have argued previously, the identification of individual student needs and the implementation of plans to meet these needs are more evident than it was in 1974.

Perhaps the biggest change from 1974 to 2015 in terms of curriculum has been an increased emphasis on process in comparison to acquisition of pure knowledge. Having said that, process and finding out the whys and the wherefores has always been part of our primary education system. Making connections and encouraging investigation to establish reasoned outcomes have simply become more important over the years, helped, I would suggest, by a much greater ability to locate information rapidly. Remember the Encyclopedia Britannica that was the ba-sis of most school libraries’ reference sections? Today, with the speed of change facts contained in such publications are often quickly out of date. What our students require today is the ability to access relevant, reliable and valid information speedily and to then make sense of it to answer questions that are important and have relevance to them (with input and guidance from skilled teachers) – what inquiry learning is all about. However, this comes with a strong caveat, namely appropriate knowledge is and always will be important. Knowledge counts. The challenge today is to determine what knowledge is relevant so we can achieve a balance between process and knowledge. This is an on-going challenge that we strive to get right all the time, but let us not kid ourselves – sometimes we don’t.

Hence, the biggest change between 1974 and today is part of a continuum of change whereby students are increasingly challenged to find answers for themselves about matters that are relevant to them (with input and guidance from skilled teaching) in order to prepare them for life after school while also acknowledging that knowledge is a very important component in our curriculum.

Issues such as the Treaty of Waitangi, biculturalism, te reo Maori and Tikanga Maori had barely surfaced in 1974. I recall some discussion on these issues but they were certainly not part of the day-to-day culture of most schools. I did participate in a number of marae-based visits with junior classes but I don’t think that was typical of the time. It was probably because of the exceptional leadership of my then leader and took place in the context of a school with a high Maori and Pacific Island student population. (More of Tikanga Māori later on.)

Invitation The school will be holding a ceremony, starting at 9.30 am on Friday 24 April, to commemorate the anniversary of the one hundredth landing at Gallipoli. Weather permitting, the ceremony will be held on the netball court near the flag poles. Representatives of the Royal New Zealand Navy will be in attendance. Members of our school community are invited to attend the ceremony. Please note that the ceremony will go ahead irrespective of the weather with the alternative venue being the hall. Should the hall be the venue, our capacity to host visitors will be somewhat diminished. Let's hope for fine weather.

WWII Unveiling at Kennedy Park

On Tuesday 31 March, Campbells Bay School kapa haka will be performing at a plaque unveiling ceremony of a new plinth that is being installed at Kennedy Park. We have been invited to perform by the Kennedy Park WWII Trust. The ceremony runs from 9.50am until approximately 10.40 am. Members of our school community are very welcome to attend this event.

Swimming Pool Keys The school pool will close on the last day of this term, Thursday,2 April. We would be grateful if you have a pool key that it is returned to the school office by 3.00pm on Thursday 2 April.

Farewells At the end of this week we bid farewell to Lynley Ainsworth and Liz Brotherton.

Lynley became a member of the CBS staff in April 1998 having been a mother helper at school prior to this. It sounds along time ago but the time has whizzed by. Lynley has achieved a great deal during her time at school. Starting as a classroom teacher, Lynley became our 'go to IT expert' on the staff. As a result of her increasing expertise in this domain and on the increasing development of IT across the school, Lynley was the logical choice to become the professional leader so that IT became an integral part of the learning process. As technology became increasingly embedded in classrooms Lynley's role became ever more important as she supported teachers to ensure their teaching utilised technology the school had invested in. Lynley kept right up with the fast changing pace of change in the field of technology working with staff and contractors to ensure we have the best of what was available. As technology is now more integrated into class programmes than it was when the information technology suite was built over ten years ago, Lynley has been instrumental in assisting with the design of the remodeled library. The only shame is that Lynley will have left before we get to use it, although Lynley will be returning for the official opening next term. We extend to Lynley and husband, Barry, our very best wishes for the next chapter in their lives - a move to a more rural lifestyle in the lower North Island. Farewell and thank you.

Liz created the job she is now leaving! For several years Liz worked as an increasingly busy volunteer trying to bring some order to the ever growing domain of school sport. It got to the point in February 2009 where it became clear there was a need for a paid position and, fortunately, Liz accepted the offer of employment. Since that time sporting activities have grown in the number of children involved and the number of teams fielded by the school. To meet the increasing demand for sporting opportunities based on the school the role Liz has played has grown to the point it has been almost full-time with Liz showing huge commitment to the role by seemingly being everywhere when it comes to sport. We owe Liz a debt of gratitude for her dedication to sport at Campbells Bay and to her patience when dealing with the challenges that arise from time to time regarding the selection of teams. Our sporting organisation provides many opportunities for children at the school. Thanks, Liz.

We are pleased to announce our new coordinator of sports as Nicola Livingston. “Nikki” comes to CBS with a wealth of leadership and experience in coordinating across a range of fields. Actively involved in primary school sport, in Singapore and New Zealand, as well as water wise, Nikki is passionate about primary level participation in sport and leading school organisations in this field. Well done and thank you to everyone who braved the weather and joined us on the Shore to Shore Fun Run/Walk. Apart from the small shower at the start it was a great morning with plenty of sunshine by the time we reached Milford Reserve. The sausage sizzle run by MRE raised $1,003 for Vanuatu! Thank you to everyone who donated and brought a sausage. In terms of funding for the school, the next step from here is the school will put forward a grant application for P.E. and sports equipment for the school from Harbour Sport. I will attend the grants evening on the 14 May. Because of the amazing response from our community we should achieve another outstanding result this year in terms of our grant application. I will inform every one of the results in the newsletter following the grants evening. Hope you all enjoyed the day as much as I did and hope to see you again next year!
