URGENT DONATIONS REQUIRED

FOR VANUATU The devastation across Vanuatu has left many people not only homeless but without any personal belongings. Red Cross has two flights heading up to Vanuatu this week and there is an opportunity for people to donate used clothing and household items. The types of things they are needing are:

Clothing for all ages (shirts, tee shirts, sweatshirts, trousers, shorts, dresses, shoes, socks and even second hand bras will be taken).

Any school supplies, perhaps old books, pads that are no longer used, pens, pencils etc.

Linen – towels, sheets and old blankets.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. A drop box will be located in the entrance to the school office. We really only have two days to get this to the Red Cross, so collections will be from today (Monday) through to Wednesday afternoon. Many thanks for your help. Help Required Year 5 Parents and Students

Next term, during Week 1, our Year 6 road patrollers will be on school camp. We are looking for 10 Year 5 students to cover this duty during this time. We still require four students and parents/adult helpers Road patrol is a very important duty performed each morning before school from 8.20am to 8.55am and then again after school from 2.55pm to approx 3.15pm Mr McGowan assists the children in the afternoon, however, we would require one or two parents to assist in the morning. Adults would only be required on the morning their child was on patrol. We have Constable Fenton coming on Thursday morning from 9.00am to work with our Year 6 patrollers and we would like the Year 5 students able to assist us next term to attend for training. Parents are also welcome. 1974 - Part 6 The thing that strikes me about teaching today when compared with teaching in the mid-seventies is that of increased knowledge teachers have today. Previously I have mentioned our greater awareness and knowledge of issues that can hinder student achievement and the rise of the Special Education Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO); now an essential and important position in schools. What never fails to impress me is the explosion of knowledge available to us in terms of how we can improve our teaching practice. I am not just talking about the multitude

of digital devices that are now a matter of course for young people as these are simply tools. What I am referring to is the research that has taken place and continues to take place that means our teachers are increasingly well informed to meet student needs. With the advent of the SENCO, the increasingly important role the English as a Second Language Teacher (ESOL) plays when helping classroom teachers further enhance their classroom practice and the support available through tailored individual and school-wide professional development based on student needs, by and large, we have the resources and the flexibility to work towards meeting student needs. Having previously mentioned the important role of the SENCO it is important to acknowledge the increasingly important role of the ESOL

teacher. In 1974, depending where in the country you lived, the New Zealand class-room contained, in various numbers students who identified as being Maori, Pasifika or New Zealand European. Yes, there were smatterings of other cultures but in my classroom teaching days this was the mix. How things have changed.

Today our classrooms comprise students from many more cultures than was once the case. Most obviously, in recent times, we have welcomed students from China, South Korea, India and Japan. However, our cultural diversity is far greater than that and this has raised expectations for the school to provide specific support to assist in the ready acquisition of English. Hence, today the role of this teacher and support staff plays an important role when it comes to meeting these needs.

Coming back to my earlier comments about teacher knowledge, it is worthy of note that the post graduate courses and qualifications our staff are undertaking in the domain of second language learning are invaluable when it has come to supporting classroom teachers and students. An example of meeting the needs in the ever changing world of education.

Campbells Bay School Year 4, 5, and 6 students have had access to these competitions for the last 13 years, and many have enjoyed considerable success. The competitions offered are as follows:

Who should enter these competitions:

The competition is a chance to extend your child in subject areas they enjoy success in. They are open to students in Years 4, 5 and 6. We suggest that you avoid entering for subjects in which your child is still developing mastery. If your child enjoys a challenge, they will love this opportunity. If you are new to the competitions, we recommend that you visit the New South Wales University website for practice questions. Professional Development Day Advance Notice

The school will be closed on the day after the ANZAC Day holiday. Hence, the school will be closed on Monday 27 April (the ANZAC Day holiday) AND on Tuesday 28 April. We are hopeful by scheduling the professional development day at this time will mean some families will be able to take advantage of having an even longer holiday weekend. There is only one professional development day per year (in term time) with other whole school professional development taking place during holidays.

NZ Police Training From Monday 16 March to Friday 20 March the NZ Police will be conducting training exercises at 46 Aberdeen Rd Campbells Bay. This training will take place between 9am—5pm. The training will include the use of demolitions and loud noises may be heard. At times you may see members of the NZ Police carrying firearms. These firearms are for training purposes and only fire paint rounds. Any enquiries phone 302 6400.

Homestay Families Needed

Three Weeks Next Term Campbells Bay School along with Takapuna Normal Intermediate School is hosting a group of students from Thailand for three weeks from Saturday 18 April until Sunday 10 May. We are looking for four homestays families for one Year 6 boy and three Year 6 girls. These short term students will be hosted by the selected families for the three weeks for an authentic kiwi experience. One day of each weekend, the children will partake in an organised tour with their group. Homestay families will be paid $250 per week and caregivers will be police vetted and have a house check prior to being accepted. (This is a legal requirement.) CBS will have a gazebo set up in the school tent area. After you have completed your sign in into the transition area, come over to the school gazebo and hang out with the school team. I am looking forward to seeing everyone down there. Keri Maunder Year 5 and 6 Hockey Trials Year 5 and 6 hockey trials will take place this Friday 20 March. Players will be travelling to the Harbour Hockey Stadium, 60 Paul Matthews Drive Albany by bus. The girls will be leaving school at 9:15am and returning at morning tea. The boys will leave at morning tea and return at 12:30pm. Shin guards and mouth guards are compulsory. PLAYERS WHO DO NOT HAVE A MOUTH GUARD WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO ATTEND THE TRIALS. Winter Hockey for Year 0-2 North harbour Hockey offer the Fun Sticks programme for Year 0-2 students wanting to participate in winter hockey. It is an engaging 13 week programme which includes basic movement and hockey specific activities. It takes place at the Harbour Hockey Stadium, 60 Paul Matthews Drive Albany on Saturday mornings 10am-11am. The first session is on Saturday 16 May and runs over Term 2 and 3. Cost $90. All information and registrations can be found on the Harbour Hockey website. Tackle rugby trials TOMORROW at 7.45am This is for all those in Years 5 and 6 who have signed up to try out for the school team. Please come in playing gear so you can change for school and remember a mouthguard. No boots needed as play in bare feet. If it is pouring with rain at 7.30am and needs to be cancelled a notice will go out on the school Facebook sports page and on the front of the sports page on our school Google site. Selection of Teams With the selection of netball and hockey teams about to get underway and in the context that as a very active sporting school it seems that teams are always being selected for one sporting code or another, in terms of team selections I ask that you bear the following in mind: Participation is our first priority, over and above competitive advantage. A prime example, is in the past twelve months our cricket teams attending the one day tournament have increased to five teams. Further, there is and always will be a cut off line, for either not making a team or making a team. This is unavoidable as the line must end and start with someone. Team selection is more art than science. There is a degree of subjectivity. Teams at CBS are selected by volunteers who do their best when selecting teams. The very presence of selectors means that children have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of codes. As we know all team selections can be controversial, this is not only limited to primary school level teams. Controversies can be found in college, club and at national level. Many people have views, some strongly held, about the decisions of selectors associated with our national teams. The column space devoted to decisions by national selections must be enormous. Such discussions and possible controversies are best left for the national scene. They have no place at school level. Hence, if you are unhappy with a selection decision please do not raise the issue with the selector or the school. Please keep it to yourself. If you are so unhappy with a decision, you do have the option of withdrawing your child from the team although this would, of course, be regrettable. Selecting sporting teams is not the core business of the school. Such sporting opportunities are provided as a result of a considerable amount of goodwill on the part of many volunteers. This goodwill of our selectors, the organizers of the codes and the day to day coaches and managers is absolutely essential to the provision of sporting opportunities for children at school level. Please respect our volunteers at all times.
