From the Editor Keeping Faith

A book by the former President of the United States, Jimmy Carter, enti-tled “Keeping Faith: Memoirs of a President”, described his presidency in the early 1990s. Jimmy Carter was perceived by the US public as a weak President, because he failed to project a strong image through the public media. However, unlike the presidents imme-diately before or after him, Jimmy Carter was a leader who never hid his sincere, honest and consistent desire to be a moral person as the leader of the nation. The US public could not un-derstand the approach that decisions were made on the basis of universal principles of right and wrong, not po-litical advantage. The title of the mem-oir reflects Jimmy Carter’s underlining principle of keeping faith in his beliefs amongst all political adversaries.

As Christians, we have our faith in God. Our faith is a trust that God, in the form of Jesus Christ His son, will lead us in our daily life. It is an analogy of a traveller stepping into an airplane, that he or she puts their complete trust in the captain to bring them safely to their destination. However, in Luke’s Gos-pel we saw that even the apostles lacked their trust in Jesus as a captain when the boat they were travelling met a fierce gale of wind and began filling with water (Luke 8:23). When Jesus calmed the storm his first words to the disciples were “Where is your faith?” (Luke 8:25)

By contrast, the woman who was suffering from a haemorrhage for years tried to get near to Jesus just to touch the fringe of his cloth (Matthew 9:20).

She had the belief that this act would make her get well. Jesus saw the woman and said “daughter, take cour-age, your faith had made you well.” (Matthew 9:22)

The two gospel stories showed how faith was manifested in various people who were encountering Jesus in per-son. Being a Catholic or a Christian does not necessarily mean one will put trust in Jesus in the first place. Didn’t the disciples lose faith in their master during a storm? There are Christians reverting to astrology, superstitious practices or even giving up their relig-ion when God is silent during a storm. In fact God is not silent, He is testing our faith, exactly like Jesus was asking the disciples “Where is your faith?”.

If we let Jesus to lead our lives, we need to follow his teachings to lead a moral life with compassion to our fel-low human beings. Keeping faith de-mands a moral courage and may put Christians in a disadvantaged position, as the world puts their trust in earthly returns and denounced Christians as weak, just like the US public saw Jimmy Carter as a weak president making political decisions with hon-esty.

The Catholic faith demands a total reliance in Jesus to lead our lives, this faith also demands courage to lead a moral life with compassion to other human beings. “Keeping Faith” is a condition, not an option, of becoming a follower of Jesus. The words of Jesus to the woman with haemorrhage were beautifully encouraging “take courage, your faith had made you well.”

Walk a New Path in Life Edmund

April 23, 2011 was a big day for me and another milestone in my life. I was baptized on that day. I am committed to Jesus that I’ll fol-low his teaching in the journey of my life to come. When my friends and colleagues know about this, they ask the similar question. ‘Why and what is the drive to your decision?’ This is a very interesting question and I guess every newly-baptized will have their own version of answer. I would like to take this opportunity to share some of my thoughts and feelings.

Starting from my childhood, I can say I’m a very lucky person to be born as a single boy in a family of 6 children. I was precious in the minds of my parents; especially my dad was also the only son for my grandparents. Though we were an average family in the 60’s, I en-joyed all the privilege among my sisters in my early childhood. I did not take advantage of my privilege and behaved like a spoiled child. I always rejected the full attention that my mum gave to me as a protest that love and care should be shared with my sisters.

As a teenager, I started to realize the re-sponsibilities that were laid on me as the only son in a traditional Chinese family. You can imagine how the elders would teach you what to do and behave. So I was independent and planned out my future on what to achieve along the way. Fortunately with the hard work that I put in, it seemed that things worked out the way I wanted them to be. At one stage, I was so confident that I often argued with peo-ple that “you work for what you want”. “Everything is possible.” I guess to a certain degree that is true.

Having not much problem in life, I have been interested to explore more about the mys-tery of life and the universe. I read a lot of books in the spiritual plane trying to under-stand how this world came into existence and how it works. I studied a bit of science, relig-ion and spiritual readings. I was most attracted to the Buddhist teachings. However, when it comes to the creation of the world and all the beautiful creatures, it just does not have a com-plete answer. I believe there should be an al-

mighty power that has made these things hap-pened.

In 2009, a tragedy happened to our family. I lost my younger son in a fatal motorbike ac-cident. It was a huge blow to our family. Hav-ing sailed peacefully and smoothly through my life, I just could not understand how this could happen. I started to question if I had done any-thing wrong that deserved the experience of this tragedy. My whole life turned upside down and emotional.

At the Christmas of 2009, through a friend (or may be through God’s call), we joined the CCC Christmas family Bible camp and had the opportunity to hear Fr. Edward Chow’s talk. I was amazed by his literacy knowledge of the Chinese culture. He can relate the Chinese wis-dom with what Jesus has taught us. I guess the Truth is the Truth, no matter how it is ex-plained or interpreted. I was then introduced to a catechism class in the Happy Family group. So I took the chance to learn more about Catholic and the Bible. The more I study about the Bible, the more I enjoy it and appreciate the preaching of Jesus about God. The great love that Jesus exhibited is something that eve-ryone should do to pursue a harmonious world.

Having experienced such a down turn in life, it’s time to make a change for the better and to attain a feeling of peace in mind. This is what I need from God through my prayers. Amazingly, by going to church regularly, there are moments that I can experience peace and joy. I believe that Christ must be with us dur-ing Mass. After a year of the catechumen class, I determined to live a new life in Christ. In my family, I was the only one who was not Chris-tian, so I decided to be baptized and join the Christian family living the life that God and Jesus want me to be. After my big decision of getting baptized early last year, a few things just happened to me smoothly without much of my planning and worries. I am starting to ex-perience more of Christ’s grace in a personal way.

Timothy Wong

Another year has gone by so quickly, it seems as if it was yesterday that “Voices of Youth” just addressed its readers for the closing of 2010 and now 2011 has pasted and we are well into 2012. So let’s start by thanking God for what He has done and we pray that He continues to guide the youths and fill them with the Holy Spirit to continue to spread His Gospel and do His work. So as a tradition we reflect on an event that always closes the past year, leaving behind great memories and where new friendships are developed and old strengthened. Yes, it is the Family Camp. But what is particular special about 2011 is that not only was there the traditional camp, the week encompassed another event, which together lifted up the spirit of unity among the youths. We were privilege to have Chinese youths from all over Australia to join us in a combined gathering known as Pan Australian Chinese Catholic Community Forum - PAN forum. So two events in five days has brought together a quite unique journey and afterwards leaving a sweet after taste that reminds us that we are the Salt and Light of the World, we are never alone and together we bring flavour to our lives and those around us. For Family Camp, the theme was “Mythbusters – Catholic Edition”, talking about apologetics – defending our faith. While for PAN forum it was “Formation & Ministry in our Journey with Jesus”, talking about our Christian Identity and how to live morally everyday as a follower of Jesus. Two separate themes but with a strong connection - in order to defend our faith we must know and live truly our faith. It is about equipping ourselves and striving to improve ourselves so that when others ask us this question, “Why are you are Catholic?”, we can answer with confidence and boldness, “I cannot live any other way!”. We tell them it is because our normal daily life and spiritual life has become inseparable. Like milk and coffee when missed together creates an aroma and taste that coffee lovers cannot resist. Once stirred there is no turning back! So why am I a Catholic? Honestly speaking nothing can truly touch me more than my experience of God through my five senses, you probably have already realised that, and so I’m a Catholic because it has allowed me to understand that God is not a symbolic figure but has real presences in the countless ways shown through my senses. Therefore what parts of this event has touched me the most is the candle light Praise and Worship and Adoration with Taize Prayers. Through the sound of music God listens to our prayers. Through the Eucharist Jesus offers His flesh for our daily bread. Through the flame we know He has given us the Holy Spirit to lighten our darkest days. And so, I leave you with photos (thanks to Dominic Wong) and my designs for this event. I hope your sense of sight, on these, will bring back memories of this great event. See, Hear, Taste, Smell, Touch the Love that is God.

God Bless,

Five loaves of Bread Five in scripture means Grace. Through the unity and love of the faithful, blessed by Grace, with the sacred heart that is Jesus at our centre, we have enough spiritual food to defend our faith!

Harold Pon

Two Fishes As Catholics, our life’s ministry is to be fishers of men, to let others touch the same love we experience through the journey with Jesus Christ. We are lifted up by the cross through His ultimate sacrifice and too our Church is formed and strengthened by lifting up His great cross to the world. “A” is Australian, “A” is Asian, “A” is Agape, is the unity that is our group.

Five loaves and two fish In reference to this miracle performed by Jesus we know our faith is lived through sharing and with Jesus, our spiritual food. If we have a unifying heart we can continue to create miracles that Jesus has once started. We are small but the group can achieve big. We can feed the many!

We welcome a great brother in Christ, who has always been a strong member in organising and supporting the youths for camp every year. Here are his reflections and thoughts on this year’s combined event. Please continue to pray for his ministries. May God continue to guide him.

Hi everyone! Another year has passed and so has another Family Camp! But this time it was particularly special because for most of us, we just experienced 2 camps back to back (Family Camp and PAN Australia forum) spanning across 5 days AND that we had interstate visitors (mainly, Melbourne and Perth) joining our youth program this year! It was an amazing experience to have had to spend 5 days with everyone to learn about apologetics (Defending our Faith) and looking at social/moral issues from a Catholic view point. We were exceptionally fortunate to not only have had Fr Gerard, Fr Lito, Sr Damian (and 9 aspirants), Andrew Wood, BUT also Bishop Porteous AND Bishop Ingham come talk and share their knowledge/experience of the faith with us! Of course, we cannot forget about all the hard work that was put in together by the team of leaders that made the youth program such a success! All the leaders worked hard in the 3 months leading up to the camp to make it a success and enjoyable for all the participants. Many many hours were spent on scripting, filming, editing videos/booklets, printing, practicing for Praise & Worship, preparation for the games – just to name a few. All of the leaders stayed up every single night during the 5 days to ensure that everything ran smoothly! Thank you to you ALL! Much thanks and gratitude (which words can not describe) must be given to ALL the people (youth leaders and the organisers for the adult program) involved to bring Family Camp 2012 and PAN Australia forum together! Thank you once again to everyone that has helped out. I hope that everyone enjoyed the 3 or 5 days and I sincerely pray that all the participants felt more spiritually enriched and the fire of the Holy Spirit will continue to keep burning. Praise the Lord! Hope to see you all at the end of this year! God Bless,

What we have come to know as Valentine’s Day is in fact the Feast Day for St. Valentine.

St. Valentine was a priest who helped Christians even when they were in trouble.

The Feast Day for St. Valentine is on Feb. 14th, and it is on this day that we celebrate the love of our families (young and old alike), and that of all our worldly brothers and sisters.

Holy Spirit, in this upcoming year please help me to find the strength to go on even when things are hard. Jesus, in this upcoming year please give me chances to use my gifts for the better of others. I want to be like you Jesus so that I can know peace and true happiness.

Amen.

God’s Valentine gift of love to us

Was not a bunch of flowers;

It wasn’t candy, or a book

To while away the hours.

His gift was to become a man,

So He could freely give

His sacrificial love for us,

So you and I could live.

He gave us sweet salvation,

And instruction, good and true--

To love our friends and enemies

And love our Saviour, too.

So as we give our Valentines,

Let’s thank our Lord and King!

The reason we have love to give

Is that He gave everything.
