Born in Pelago, 20 kilometers from Florence.

Born in 1378 Died on December 1st, 1455

Birth and Death

Bartoluccio Ghiberti was Lorenzo’s father, and

also an artist and a goldsmith.

Family

Lorenzo was well-trained as a goldsmith by his

father, and was accepted as an apprentice by the “Silk and Gold” guild in 1392.

By 1398 he passed his examination and became a master goldsmith.

In 1400 he traveled to Rimini to escape the plague and took the opportunity to train as a painter during that time.

Early Years

Was an avid collector of classical artifacts. Was a historian aside from being an artist. Was a humanist and practiced humanist ideas. Wrote an autobiography called Commentari

which contains importing writing of his views on art; it may be the oldest autobiography to date.

The Florence Baptistery Doors

• Ghiberti designed and created the east and west doors to the Florence Baptistery.

• Each door contains scenes from the scripture of the New Testament.

• Michelangelo referred to the doors as the “Gates of Paradise”.

Caravaggio

Life Caravaggio was born on September 29, 1571 in

Milan, Italy. Michelangelo Merisi is his real name He died July 16, 1610. He was known as the most famous painter in

Rome from 1600-1606. He was just 38 years old at his time of death. Caravaggio was an Italian painter. After his death, he was forgotten for quite a while. This is his first painting called “Boy peeling a Fruit”

Major Work One of Caravaggio’s most famous

portraits was called David Victorious over Goliath. It was created in 1600.

Other Facts

In 1584 he was apprenticed for four years to the Lombard painter Simone Peterzano, described in the contract of apprenticeship as a pupil of Titian.

One of Caravaggio’s most famous pieces of work was “The Calling of Saint Matthew”. It was created in 1600.

Events leading to Death

On May 29 1606, Caravaggio killed, unintentionally, a young man named Ranuccio Tomassoni.

He fled to Naples after this and was outside of Rome’s jurisdiction.

No one knows exactly how he died. There are rumors that he was executed, but other stories claim he died from a fever.

No body was ever found. This work is called 'Judith beheading
