Ellesmere Musical Theatre Company is a long-standing, successful, local amateur group. Established in 1947, it started by rehearsing and performing at Ellesmere Community Centre in Sheffield. But these days it performs at The Montgomery Theatre in the city centre. The company has cemented its place amongst the most successful theatre groups in the city, recent hits include Guys and Dolls, Oliver!, The Witches of Eastwick, The Addams Family, by maintaining a strong core of established members, while welcoming new performers to its ranks regularly. More often than not, the newcomers stay and become part of the Ellesmere family themselves.

Within 9 to 5, Ellesmere keeps that mix of established and new members. Helen Kempton is playing Violet, the stalwart of the office. She has been a member of Ellesmere for over 20 years, but has played leads elsewhere, the most memorable being an incredible Mrs Overall in Acorn Antiques. Jane Blythe is assistant director and has been a playing and production member for even longer. It is a first outing with EMTC for Louise Walker, playing office newbie Judy (elsewhere has played Mrs Anna in The King and I and Maria in Sound of Music), while playing the instantly recognisable Dolly Parton role of Doralee is Sara Hibberd (her 2nd EMTC show). Damien Ross plays the objectionable office boss – he joined for Guys and Dolls 6 years ago, after leads elsewhere in The Producers and Scarlet Pimpernel. Carol Wibberley (16years) plays his faithful assistant, Roz.


9 to 5, The Musical, is a hilarious story of friendship and revenge, which is outrageous, thought provoking and just a little romantic. Pushed to boiling point by their sexist, lying and egotistical boss, our leading ladies concoct a plan to get even. They learn there’s nothing they can’t do, even in the man’s world of 1979.

9 to 5 The Musical has music and lyrics by Dolly Parton, Book by Patricia Resnick. It is being performed at The Montgomery Theatre, Surrey Street, Sheffield from 12th to 16th April.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These need to be filled in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

OAKWELL’S 50th ANNIVERSARY SPOTLIGHT

Believe it or not, I have been writing this column consistently, for good or ill, for 50 years. It had been running for a year or so when I was asked to take it on, and my first piece came out in March 1966. I was probably daft to do it, financial rewards were meagre, but over the years doing it has stimulated my interest in clubs and entertainment, and given me a lot of pleasure. I’ve made many friends in clubland and met some very interesting folk. There were legends around at that time, people like Ronnie & Ricky, Lynn Perrie, Roland & Jackie Toaduff, Harry Parker and the Barrie Brothers. I got the chance to see, in the big clubs, Neil Sedaka, Johnny Mathis, Johnny Ray, Bob Monkhouse, many other really big stars, and some off the big bands. Early articles didn’t just cover acts seen and clubs visited, they talked of club comedy, not insulting an audience and how to get away with it if you did, and the value of live musi-cians. There was also an appreciative piece on the Farmers Club in Kinsley. When, for work reasons I moved over to the Manchester area I wanted to give up, but was persuaded to carry on, but on the proviso that the column would appear in alternate issues of the Guide. Even so, it has meant I have driven thousands of miles across the Pen-nines, sometimes late at night and in atrocious weather. I’ve been a judge in all sorts of situ-ations, from judging the Easter Bonnet competition at Mill Lane Club in South Kirkby to sit-ting on the judging panel of the National Final of The Stage Awards in Manchester’s Palace Theatre. It just isn’t possible any more—an old codger not in the best of health I’m not sup-posed to drive after dark or for any distance for that matter, so have to rely on others and specially my eldest son. As the clubland we once knew has crumbled, so have I, and I miss Yorkshire and the friends I have made. Some do come this way, and it’s so good to see them. One or two I don’t miss, like the artiste who took exception to something I had written, took the trouble to find my phone number and spent 40 minutes telling me I’d destroyed his career. I see that, some years later, he’s still working. These days it seems that nostalgia is the thing and is usually appreciated.. Luckily, while I’m always short of breath and don't walk at all well, my memory still functions and there is a stash of old photos in Oakwell Towers waiting to see the light of day once more. But it would be great to have someone willing to get around the clubs and report what’s go-ing on as my colleagues and I used to do.
