Message from theChief Executive

Welcome to our Autumn/Winter 2014 edition newsletterAs you may know, 2014 marks the 30th Anniversary of the Hospice’s foundation: truly a memorable

milestone in our history of freely caring for the local community.

Over the last three decades we have, with the support of our many donors and supporters, steadily

developed new services in response to identified local needs. It is especially pertinent that this year we

have been able to extend the Children’s Hospice (now formally called Butterwick House) to enable us

to provide specialist facilities for older teenagers and young adults facing life limiting illness.

Thank you for your contribution to Butterwick’s ongoing success.

Graham

Butterwick believes in the power of creativity to encourage feelings of wellbeing. Many patients arrive at a Butterwick Hospice quite unaware of their latent artistic talents. Every Butterwick Hospice offers a selection of arts and crafts opportunities and talented volunteers to gently tease out the creativity in people. Patients sit together around a large work table and enjoy the company, the conversations and the joy of discovering what they can achieve.

Art or creative crafts offer a very unique experience to everyone. Being able to develop something individual and unique means people can create something personal and special for loved ones at home.

Your donations help us to keep our art and crafts cupboards stocked so patients can produce beautiful greeting cards, paint pictures, sew, embroider and make all kinds of individual gifts.

Looking forward after30 years

Achieving a milestone in the history of an organisation’s existence is a great opportunity to look back and remind ourselves about the journey so far. Looking back over all the challenges and achievements during the history of Butterwick Hospice Care has also encouraged us to look further forward and think about what else could be done to support local people who are dealing with the effects of a serious life threatening illness.

We started this year with our traditional business planning exercises and thought about what support we would like to provide. We came up with some exciting ideas which we thought we would share with you but we would also like to hear your ideas too.

The question we posed to ourselves was:‘In an ideal world, if money were no object, what services would you like the Hospice to provide?’

We decided we would like to:

● Develop more services within the communities we serve and take Hospice Care out into people’s homes.

● Develop a ‘Community Hub’ within the Hospice in Stockton where people can meet for a coffee and access courses and information on all the services available for life limited people and their families.

22nd July 1997

26th October 1998Following a massive public appeal, Butterwick House Children’s Hospice was opened by Gary Barlow, to families across Teesside, County Durham, North Yorkshire and Wearside.

If you have any suggestions... about what you feel would be a helpful service from Butterwick Hospice please send your ideas to:

BirthdayCelebrations

The 14th August 1984 was the day Butterwick’s Declaration of Trust was signed. So on the 14th August this year we decided to create a small celebration together to mark this special date.

We baked a large cake to share amongst our patients, staff and volunteers and Mary Butterwick, OBE, got the party started by making the first cut.

A more permanent version of our 30 year timeline was fixed to the wall beside the entrance to the Stockton car park, so local supporters can easily see all the services they have helped to build.

Staff and volunteers in our high street shops invited our customers in, to enjoy some home-made cakes as a small thank you for their much appreciated custom (see Page 11 for picture).

Stanhope Outreach Hospice opened in the Community Hospital to bring Hospice services to the rural communities in Weardale.

After a successful bid for Big Lottery funding, the Palliative Home Care Team was launched across the Durham Dales from Bishop Auckland Hospice, offering support in patient’s own homes 24hrs a day 7 days a week.

For more details about our services please visit the website www.butterwick.org.uk

FirstContact

The Neurological First Contact Group at the Stockton Hospice has been set up to support people diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease and has been designed in partnership with the MND specialist nursing team within the local NHS.

The Neurological First Contact Group meet every Friday afternoon at Butterwick in Stockton for an informal drop in where they can meet with specialist nurses, enjoy helpful therapies and make contact with other local people experiencing similar challenges.

Mike Chapman was one of the service’s first user’s earlier this year.

Mike explained: “I’ve always been fit and played a lot of football. In 2008/09 I started getting lots of cramp in my legs and my balance wasn’t as good. I went for tests and in April 2009 I was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. I couldn’t believe it, I thought, this can’t be happening to me!”

“My specialist nurse mentioned the Neurological First Contact Group at Butterwick Hospice. I immediately thought, the Hospice! Why would I go there? Isn’t that where you go to die? My next thought was aromatherapy? What’s all that about, isn’t it mumbo jumbo? I didn’t think any of this would help me. I expected the Hospice to be full of old people and faceless bureaucrats but my first impression was, this is nice.”

“The following week I came for my first aromatherapy treatment. Now I can’t speak highly enough of it. By the time I leave I have this really nice ‘feel good factor’ it feels like how I imagine the boy on the Ready Brek advertisement is meant to feel.”

“The group have helped me overcome a lot of issues and some psychological barriers that I have

struggled with, such as using a walking stick. I’m really pleased that my MND nurse recommended I come to Butterwick Hospice. It’s a lovely friendly, relaxing place to

visit and nothing like I imagined. If anyone was thinking of approaching the Hospice for support I would recommend it without hesitation.”

As part of the Hospice’s 30th anniversary celebrations, staff and volunteers in our high street shops invited customers to enjoy some home-made cakes to share over a cuppa with their loved ones. This was just a little thank you to the many people in towns across the region who help Butterwick Hospice by donating and buying from Butterwick Hospice shops.

Shopping in our stores is a very helpful way to support local Hospice services. The shops are full of good quality items donated by local people to help those in need. In the shops you will notice there are two types of price tickets, some blue and some green. The green tickets are on items that have Gift Aid attached. Whatever you pay for these items the Government adds 25% to the amount you have paid! So when you shop look for the green ticket items and add another 25% of care at no extra cost to you.

CorporatesContribute

Butterwick Corporate Partnerships have grown steadily over recent years, in part, because of the greater prominence of the Corporate and Social Responsibility agenda. Butterwick is successful in creating new corporate partnerships by encouraging loyalty, providing value and identifying opportunities for commercially relevant proposals.

A Corporate Partnership with Butterwick Hospice Care really does give people an opportunity to shine and give something back. There are huge benefits for both parties not only generating much needed funds for the Charity but also an opportunity for employers and employees to be proud of their support of one of the most highly respected and loved Charities in the North East.

When it comes to turning a good idea into a success, preparation and planning are everything. We are now looking to build even stronger partnerships with the corporate sector to help ensure the Hospice is there for future generations. On behalf of the Trustees, staff and volunteers at Butterwick we would like to say a huge “Thank You” to the businesses who are supporting the Hospice through our Corporate Partnerships.

If you would like information about how to get involved contact Patricia Boynton, Stockton Hospice on 01642 628930 or Laura Douthwaite, Bishop Auckland Hospice on 01388 660644 or visit www.butterwickmediacentre.com

Remember a loved one thisChristmas

Traditionally, Christmas is the time for celebrations, sharing and remembrance.Butterwick Hospice offers you a very special way to remember and celebrate the life of a loved one. By sponsoring a twinkling light on our special Light Up A Life Tree which will shine throughout the festive season, you can pay tribute to your loved ones and support others in need.

In celebrating and remembering your loved ones you will be supporting the work of Butterwick Hospice, however, the loved ones you wish to remember in this unique way do not need to have used the services of the Hospice, you can remember anyone who was special to you, who lit up your life, or was an inspiration.

You can also join us at our special Light Up A Life Carol Services, details in the enclosed leaflet.

After the Light Up A Life service you are welcome to stay for seasonal refreshments. There will be an opportunity to purchase Hospice Christmas cards, calendars and seasonal merchandise too.

Please use the Light Up A Life form enclosed to sponsor a light for your loved ones and to make your donation.

If you don’t wish to sponsor a light but would still like to come to the Carol Service please contact the Fundraising Office on either 01642 628930 (Stockton) or 01388 660644 (Bishop Auckland) to ensure we know numbers for catering purposes.
