Week after week with his cleverly flighted off- spinners Callum is amongst the wickets. Last Sunday at Middlesbrough was no exception as he returned 5-64 for the 3rd team. Unfortunately he couldn’t inspire them to a win after they had racked up 188-3 with Alan Lamb hitting 57 not out and Mark Romaines retiring on 50. Middlesbrough squeezed home by 2 wickets with A.Parkin making 89 and S.Gaudie 47. On the Saturday for the 2nd team he took 4-66 against Blackhall but his efforts were rewarded this time as the Seconds won by 1 wicket. Blackhall made 202-5 but Bishop, with Andrew Carrick hitting 81 and Andrew Tonge 30, won by 1 wicket. Callum has returned some impressive figures for the Bishop 3rd team this season, and remember he is only thirteen, standing only a few inches above the stumps, as he bowls against much taller and more experienced senior players and juniors. The day that he and Ben Lambert won the game for the Thirds with their batting at Sedgefield he had 5-28, then in subsequent weeks 2-42, 3-19, and 4-61. Throw in a 7 wicket haul for the 2nd team and you have a most outstanding run of success. His performance with bat and ball at Sedgefield is going to be honoured with a presentation by the N.Y.S.D. The 1st team are an enigma. After a pleasing win against Marske in the Hotel Tall Trees Macmillan T20 Cup with professional Gary Pratt hitting 40 and Phil Holdsworth 63 not out they lost at Crook the following evening in the Matthew Oswald Cup. Crook are not one of the strongest sides in the Durham County League but they beat Bishop by an easy 15 runs. Bishop bowled OK, as the 101 that Crook scored is not a large total for a 20 over night match, but their fielding was poor and their batting even worse. Fair enough, when Bishop were in the field the light was not good and the ball was wet after a shower, but even Crook must have been surprised by the lapses in the field and then with the ease that they took their wickets. Crook’s junior players Brett and Greg Upton showed up really well in the win although it was veteran Andy Burgess with 4-7, which included the wicket of Pratt, and Danny Wilkinson 3-14 who did most of the damage after Dinsdale had top scored with a brisk 32 for Crook. However, on the Saturday, their third game in three days, they beat second placed Middlesbrough at Acklam Park by 71 runs and not many teams do that. Jack Conway, missing at Crook, returned for this game and he took 6-44 and his brother Dan 3-24, after Gary Pratt had hit a superb 96 in a total of 172. Pratts’ runs came off 119 deliveries with 11 boundaries and with Dan Conway 21 runs put together a match-winning 54 runs for the fifth wicket. Fixtures Saturday May 29th: 1st team v Hartlepool (away) 2nd team v Whitby (home) Sunday May 30th: 3rd team v Blackhall (away) Monday May 31st: 1st team v Billingham (home) 2nd team v Preston (away). BISHOP AUCKLAND ST. MARY’S ANGELS F.C. The Angels Under 11's had 2 games left to get the 6 points needed to win the Miss Kicks Trophy in the Russell Foster league for girls and it started with a game against Jarrow winning 4-0 with goals from Sophie Wood (2), Emily Scarr and Emily Eggett. The girls then played Redby and in a very close game with the Angels needing all 3 points to beat Cestria on goal difference it was Redby who took the lead but the Angels drew level thanks to Sophie Wood who scored her 69th goal of the season. The second half was very tense with chances at both ends and it wasn't until the last 2 minutes that Emily Scarr decided to take the game into her own hands and after beating 3 players hit a terriffic shot into the bottom corner to win the cup for St. Marys, for her 69th goal of the season, and start tremendous celebrations with the girls doing the double this year after winning the league already. St. Mary’s Angels Under 11’s completed a fantastic double by lifting the Miss Kicks Trophy after winning the league. LEARNING THROUGH PLAY

Bishop Auckland children will benefi t from more play time thanks to funding from the Area Action Partnership. (AAP)The Bishop Auckland and Shildon AAP has given £4,200 towards the cost of a play development offi cer for Auckland Youth and Community Centre, on Walker Drive in Woodhouse Close in the town.Alan Boddy, Lead AAP Task and Finish Group Activities for Children and Young People, said, “Play is proven to help with children’s development, learning, creativity and independence. It can also keep children healthy and active leading to healthier lifestyles in adulthood. It can help children better understand the people and places in their lives as well as boosting their sense of community spirit.”The play development offi cer will help to organise after school and holiday schemes and fun days and events, benefi ting 200 local children, in partnership with local schools, Sure Start and other local groups. Elsie Race from Auckland

Youth and Community Centre, said, “This generous grant will not only improve the lives of children but many people living in the wider community.”The AAP has also enabled a playgroup to opens its doors more often.Woodhouse Close Church Playgroup has offered two playgroup sessions a week to local families for the past 28 years, but a grant of £12,000 means it is now able to offer additional play times.Twenty children, aged between two months and two years and from a variety of backgrounds, regularly enjoy getting together and with no other pre-nursery facility on the estate the new sessions will be particularly welcome.Jean Clarke runs the playgroup. She said, “The generous grant from the AAP has allowed us to help prepare young children for nursery and support their parents.”Sessions held at the playgroup provide organised activities which centre on developing social skills. Through play, children learn to develop language and communication.

ROB GEARS UP FOR 300 MILE CHALLENGE

On May 24th, Rob Richardson, Manager for Employer Responsive Programmes at Bishop Auckland College will join 300 other Help for Heroes (H4H) fundraisers from across the UK to cycle a challenging 320 mile route across Northern France to raise funds for Help for Heroes.Alongside Rob are people from all walks of life including several service personnel wounded in recent confl icts. They set out from HMS Victory in Portsmouth to cycle 320 miles across France from Le Havre to Dunkirk. The 300 riders completed their challenge in Dunkirk to coincide with the 70th Anniversary of the evacuation of British Troops, where they joined the memorial ceremony in Dunkirk. They will be transported back to the beaches of Dover by the Royal Navy in landing craft, similar to those used 70 years ago.The challenging cycle-route traces some of the region’s most signifi cant First World War and Second World War battle sites including Thiepval on the Somme. Rob decided to take part in the challenge because as an ex-serviceman he recognised the need to support wounded serviceman and women returning from Afghanistan.

Since leaving the forces in 1990 he had done very little in terms of exercise and keeping fi t and had gradually become very unfi t and overweight. He saw this as his opportunity to change his lazy lifestyle whilst

raising money for a very worthwhile charity. To support Rob’s efforts you can make a donation on his charity website: http://w w w . j u s t g i v i n g . c o m /RobRichardson569.

Rob Richardson hopes to raise funds for Help for Heroes with his cycle challenge.

The Weardale Railway began its Bishop Auckland to Stanhope service last weekend. The launch day on Saturday, 22nd May, featured actors in period costume, colourful bunting and a blessing from the Very Reverend Michael Sadgrove, the Dean of Durham. It is hoped that the line will prove to be a major tourist attraction, bringing visitors into the area and boosting the local economy.Already, the line has successfully welcomed charter trains from London and Chester. Such visits prove that there is certainly a market to be tapped into.Mark Westerfi eld of Iowa Pacifi c Holdings, Weardale Railways parent company, spoke of the romantic appeal of the line, he said, “North East England, the birthplace and original heartbeat of steam, is the ideal location to host a project of this type. A

place where people are still passionate about celebrating a landmark era of engineering that has had a remarkable infl uence on society on a global scale. He added that the passion of the railway’s volunteers would be a cornerstone of the line’s success, he said, “The commitment and drive shown by our army of loyal and dedicated volunteers is one of the major reasons why this project will hopefully be a resounding success – as they will ensure visitors will have the ultimate rail experience making them want to return time and time again.”Craig Wilson of Visit County Durham said, “The Weardale Railway is one of Durham’s true hidden gems, a heritage rail service that transports the visitor through the beautiful and picturesque Durham Dales and its charming market towns.”“The railway is a major attraction for visitors and

families and its annual calendar of events ensures that people come year round to experience Durham’s beautiful countryside, museums and award winning attractions.”On week days fi ve return services will run between Bishop Auckland and Stanhope, via Wolsingham and Frosterley. On Saturdays four return services will run, on Sundays there will be three.Tickets are priced as follows:Wolsingham :- adult single £5, adult return £5.30, child single £2.50, child £2.65 return.Frosterley :- adult single £5.10, adult return £5.40, child single £2.55, child return £2.70Stanhope :- adult single £5.20, adult return £5.50, child single £2.60, child return £2.75. A supplementary charge is applicable to heritage services. For further information or to view the Weardale Railway timetable, visit http://www.weardale-railway.org.uk/.

The Roman army will march on County Durham next week as part of the Bank Holiday festivities.Members of the Roma Antiqua historical re-enactment group will be visiting Binchester Roman Fort, near Bishop Auckland on Monday, May 31st.The group will be giving visitors an insight into the life of a Roman by demonstrating archery, close-quarter battle and fi ring a ballista, a bolt-throwing artillery catapult.Displays will take place between 11.00am and 4.00pm.

David Mason, Durham County Council Archaeologist, said, “Binchester is always a fascinating place to visit but Roma Antiqua really do bring it to life during their visits.”Built in the second half of the fi rst century AD, Binchester was once the largest Roman fort in County Durham. A small part of the site has been excavated, exposing the remains of a bathhouse with a 1,700 year-old underfl oor heating system. For more information call Binchester Roman Fort on 01388 663 089.

SILVER SURFERS STORM THE INTERNET

Older people who had never even touched a computer are surfi ng the internet with two new laptops bought by the Better Homes, Better Lives fund.Members of Woodhouse Close Church Community Luncheon Club and Day Club received £500 from the fund to buy the computers and get on line.Within days they were learning the basics of computer operation and Googling their favourite singers on the web.Club member Gladys Corner has even used it to fi nd out about her son, who lives in Dubai. She said, “My son, Trevor, was on the internet when he found Nigel Dowson’s blog on the Northern Echo website. Nigel used to live next door so Trevor ended up on Nigel’s blog.“Last week I went on and saw it.“I wasn’t interested in computers until Trevor was on the blog. He was over the moon that I had been able to see it.”Peter Hall, who runs the club, added, “They are all really keen, particularly with the

internet.“Everything is technology now and the people here are so keen on learning new things. Already the fear of touching the computer has gone and they have taken to it like ducks to water.”Peter is hoping to start teaching the group to do basic word processing and possibly set up Gladys with a webcam link with her son.Mark Welsh, ICT manager for Dale & Valley Homes, which runs the Better Homes, Better

A horrendous accident recently left three people, including a fi ve year-old boy and his mother, fi ghting for their lives. The injuries were the result of a crash involving two cars, a Seat Cordoba and a Mazda, which occurred at the crossroads on Eldon Bank just before 8.00pm on Sunday, 23rd May.The driver of the Seat was Sam Clark, a 22 year-old woman from Newton Aycliffe. She is being treated at Darlington Memorial Hospital for extensive injuries, her condition is said to be critical. As a result of the accident Miss Clark also lost an unborn child, named Jaydon-Lee by his parents. The stillborn baby was delivered by a Caesarean section on Tuesday. Her front seat passenger was Gareth Ballan, her partner, aged 24. He was taken to University Hospital of North Durham (UNHD) after sustaining several fractured ribs. The couple’s son, Tony-Alan Ballan, aged 5, was in the rear of the car, he suffered neck and chest injuries. He was also taken to UNHD for treatment; his condition was described as critical.Reports stated that the driver of

the other car was a 17 year-old male from Bishop Auckland, although the young man denies that he was driving. He suffered a minor injury and was kept at UHND overnight for observation before being released the following day. The front seat passenger in the Mazda, a 24 year-old man from Bishop Auckland, sustained head and neck injuries; he was in a critical condition at James Cook Hospital, Middlesbrough, but is no longer considered critical, and it is reported that he may be able to leave hospital shortly.A 49 year-old woman from Bishop Auckland was also in the Mazda, she was detained overnight at UHND with a broken wrist and a back injury but has since returned home.A witness who was present at the scene of the accident said that local residents were quick to help those injured in the crash. Upon smelling petrol, they pulled the injured out of the cars in case of an explosion.Any further witnesses to the accident are asked to contact Durham Constabulary’s Road Policing Unit on 0191 3752159.

THE SAFE SAVING MESSAGE

Staff from Durham County Credit Union will be spreading the message about their service at a series of events to take part in the Wear Valley area during June and July. The Credit Union, which has several hundred members, is working in partnership with Dale & Valley Homes as part of a campaign to encourage good fi nancial management among its users.By being a member of the Credit Union, and particularly using the Paypoint outlets and weekly collection events around the area, people are able to save in a responsible manner, which is particularly useful as a fi nancial cushion when planning for bills. The Credit Union is also an excellent source of loans which means people do not have to go to the loan sharks known to be operating in Wear Valley.Dale & Valley Homes is urging as many people as

possible to use the service and Credit Union members will be attending an event at King James School, Bishop Auckland, between 9.00am and 3.30pm on June 3rd, where they will be able to answer questions about what they offer. The Weardale Action Partnership is also working in partnership with the Credit Union to expand into Weardale with housing and access to services among the priorities of its work.Credit Union members can pay money in by standing order, through paypoint and at weekly sessions at Woodhouse Close on Thursdays from 10.00am to 12.00noon, Woodhouse Close Church Community Centre, Proudfoot Drive, Bishop Auckland. For more information on the Credit Union go to www.durhamcountycu.co.uk or phone 0191 375 7677.
