NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION

BUSINESS 2200

WHAT IS EFFECTIVE NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION?

“Face to face interaction is important when using non-verbal communication. Non-verbal communication would consist of facial expressions, eye contact, gestures, posture and body language, verbal sounds, physical closeness or distance” (Erozkan, 2013). These are things that you wouldn’t be able to interpret in a letter.

Business professionals most often use non-verbal communication for letters, memos, writing documents and emails. They also use it alongside oral communication like a PowerPoint in a presentation. Eye contact, a confident hand shake, and body language are not written or verbal communication; rather, they all are important ways we communicate non-verbally.

WHAT IS NON-VERBAL?

• GOOD EYE CONTACT • CONFIDENT HANDSHAKE • POSTURE AND BODY

LANGUAGE • VERBAL SOUNDS • PHYSICAL CLOSENESS OR

DISTANCE • FACIAL EXPRESSIONS

QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER

• HOW CLOSE AM I TO THIS PERSON? • WHAT IS MY BODY LANGUAGE SAYING? • WHERE ARE MY EYES LOOKING? • WHAT AM I DOING WITH MY ARMS?

HANDS? LEGS? • WHAT TONE OF VOICE AM I USING?

ORAL COMMUNICATION

BUSINESS 2200

When people think of business communication they often think of written communication, but oral and non-verbal skills are just as important. When writing, you are able to think about and say exactly what you want whereas, when speaking, you may say the first thing that comes to your mind. These skills can be used in problem solving and discussing projects.

Researchers of a study reported that, “while 62% of employees surveyed considered writing as important to their jobs, 90% indicated that the ability to orally communicate was important.” (Peterson, 2009)

Without oral and non-verbal communication in business, tasks would be harder to do and would be done with more confusion and difficulty. Being able to communicate with someone makes it easy to know exactly what they want and for things to run more efficiently. This way things get done right the first time.

Networking is a huge part of a business; without oral communication, that wouldn’t be possible. Knowing the right people can get you to where you want to be. You can get to know many people and make connections with them that you wouldn’t be able to do without this type of communication.

Along with getting to know people in the business, talking with clients is just as important, if not more. You need to be able to sell you product to them and develop rapport. Business communication would not be as effective without oral and non-verbal communication.

CONNECTION BETWEEN WRITTEN AND ORAL COMMUNICATION

“Your writing style should be an extension of your personality and your message should read much the same way you talk to your reader were you communicating face to face rather than in writing. Even though one of the main advantages of written communication is its ability to convey complex information better than oral communication, the best writing sounds comfortable to the ear.”(Bowman and Branchaw 1980)

Effective Written or Oral Communication Skills MUST HAVE

• Emotion • Identity • Regulating Converstions • Audience Interpreting • Persuasion and Relationships

Emotion is a lot harder to express through writing. To successfully communicate emotion in writing you have to be more descriptive and creative. When you communicate with someone orally you almost always have some kind of emotion showing. It could be the tone of your voice, maybe more of a physical emotion with hand gestures or the way that you are standing.

IMPROVING ORAL COMMUNICATION SKILLS TAKES TIME AND PRACTICE!
