Dear Friends, For my June ramble ........
I often reflect on how wonderful it is to have the internet and the ability to
find out almost anything and communicate with others at the ‘click of the
mouse’. Computer technology means that I can set up this magazine as a
‘virtual magazine’, receive content by email and download from the
internet. I can change and delete items, move them around in any way and
finally email the finished document to the printer who changes the virtual
document to a printed copy.— da da—magic!
Of course this is ‘everyday stuff’ to most people but I’m of an age were I
find computer technology amazing. I have learnt though that with all the
wonderful benefits of the internet there come dangers that we must be
aware of and try to avoid but, most importantly, it is for us to protect our
children ( from a very early age) from these dangers. At the same time we
need to teach them to take responsibility themselves for being safe online.
So what are children doing online, having access also on tablets and
mobile phones, and what could be affecting them? We should be aware of
what they may come across. In particular in social networking, online
gaming, chatting, downloading, with viruses and going mobile.
Apparently a survey shows that, on average, 8-11year olds each have 92
social networking friends and 1 in 5 children will play online games with
people they have not met in person but there are 57% of parents who don’t
use any parental control setting on their home computers.
So as parents and grandparents we have a lot to learn and a new
initiative....
Keeping Children Safe Online Matters and their website:
www.internetmatters.org shows us how to get to grips with what children may come across and
points us in the right direction for information, advice and support on
internet safety.
Writing this page is always the last thing I do on the Magazine and it’s
often difficult to find a subject. I just feel this is important and that we
need to be careful to protect our children from serious harm.
So, go to the website and take action.
Now at the ‘click of the mouse’ the Magazine is off to be printed! ........

June 20th is National Care Homes, Open Day
The first ever National Care Home Open Day was such a huge success,
we decided we'd do it all over again! June 20th, 2014 will see the UK's
care homes take centre stage, welcoming the public and arranging lots of
events and activities that will help to create lasting links between care
home residents and their local communities. For far too long, the care
home sector has been marred by the negative press associated with a
small number of badly run homes, and we’re determined to show people
what care homes are really about. We're making some positive noise - and
we want you to be part of it!
National Care Home Open Day is about connecting people! We want to
enrich the lives of the UK's care home residents by reminding people that
the care homes in every community are filled with unique, intelligent and
charming characters, and run by special people who really do care.
Don’t just take our word for it - we want to see you on June 20th
Come and join the residents and staff at Winchester House in
Wouldham to celebrate this day, Friday, 20th June.
Join us for morning coffee at 11am or afternoon tea at 2-30pm
when Gerry Graham will be taking us on ‘A Tour of the Musicals’.
Everyone is welcome.

We ask for a donation of £1 which will be donated to the month’s chosen charity.
THIS MONTH’S CHARITY In April all the money raised at the Country Lunch, Book Exchange and Afternoon Teas, together with proceeds from renting the Church Hall and a contribution from Church Funds has enabled us to send £240 to the Tearfund’s special appeal to provide toilets for Africa. Enough has been raised to provide 4 toilets, which is a great result. In May money raised at Country Lunch, Afternoon Teas and the Film Club will be sent to the charity ‘Canine Partners’ whose work includes training dogs to assist with the disabled. They can alert someone if the disabled person becomes ill or needs assistance, will bring the phone when it rings, help to load the washing machine and a host of other tasks which are not possible for some in a wheel chair. If anyone has any suggestions for future charities, maybe less well-known ones, please contact Eileen.

Green light for Peters Village
and the new Medway Crossing
Work to provide the £50 million new Medway Valley Crossing and Peters
Village housing development near Wouldham started in May. The
investment includes £19.5 million from the Government’s Local
Infrastructure Fund administered by the Homes and Communities Agency
(HCA).
The development represents a significant investment in Kent’s
infrastructure, including a new stretch of road, a road bridge and a rail
bridge over the River Medway to link the A228 on the west bank to the
proposed Peters Village site on the east bank. It will also provide up to
1,000 new homes at Peters Village - at least a quarter being affordable
homes.
The extensive highway improvements will significantly improve access to
both sides of the River Medway, bringing both local communities access
to wider benefits such as employment opportunities, schools, shopping,
recreation and housing
Trenport (Peters Village) Ltd. will oversee the development and delivery
of the whole project, which is due for completion around 2022, and BAM
Nuttall is the project's main contractor. The heart of the scheme is the
former Peters Lime and Cement Works, once one of the largest chalk
quarrying operations in the area. At its peak, it employed 1,000 people and
operated 80 barges.
After it fell into disuse, Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council's Local
Plan identified the works as a brownfield site ideal for residential
development. Trenport's proposals for the new village and bridge were
approved in 2006, only to be postponed by the dramatic economic
downturn.
Trenport Director Chris Hall said: "We are delighted to be able to move
forward with this ambitious and imaginative project, which will transform
a once industrialised, yet important part of the Medway Valley. We have
been sensitive and responsible custodians of the land in the meantime, but
the moment is now right for the area to fulfil it’s promise."

Heather Stoner, Area Manager for the HCA in Tonbridge and Malling
said: “The Government funding is the cash injection this project needs.
It’s an important development which will not only provide the necessary
infrastructure, but also homes and access to more opportunities through a
better crossing over the river Medway. We look forward to seeing
progress.”
Medway Valley Crossing and Peters Village Target Timeline:

archaeological investigations to minimise any damage in these sensitive
fields. Completed July 2015.

internal site roads. Completed July 2015.

WOULDHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS MAY AGM - Councillors Richard Stone and Ken Savage were elected again as
Chairman and Vice Chairman for 2014-15. Please see the Parish Council
website for the Chairman’s report for 2013-14.
NEW VILLAGE HALL FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE – The Committee
is now up and running, meeting twice a month. Their main aim is to work on a
lottery grant application. They are also arranging a number of community
events. It is vital that the village shows support for these events as this will not
only help to raise funds for the new hall but it shows a community working
together and this will assist with any grant applications made.
KEEP THIS DATE FREE for the Wouldham Village Quiz Night on Friday
20th June in Wouldham Village Hall. All funds raised will go towards the new
Village Hall. For further updates on how to get tickets please check the village
notice boards and the Parish Council website.
FLY TIPPING – The last couple of months have been particularly bad for fly
tipping in the village, especially along Hill Road. If residents, when out walking
here, notice anything suspicious, please report either to the Parish Council or the
Police. Any photographic evidence or a vehicle registration number would
assist with catching the culprits.
The YOUTH CLUB are continuing to go from strength to strength. They are
focused on looking at raising funds for a multi games unit for the recreation
ground. Well done to the five members who recently took part in a sponsored
run to make a start on raising funds. Matt Salisbury from CXK Youth Service
has taken over the running of the club on Tuesday now as well as the Friday
session. New members are welcome to attend. When the weather is good, they
meet on the recreation ground now rather than in the village hall.
WOULDHAM ALLOTMENTS are proving to be very popular this year. With
programmes such as the BBC’s ‘The Big Allotment Challenge’ helping to
increase people’s enthusiasm in growing their own fruit and veg this may have
inspired you to take up an allotment in the village so keep an eye on the notice
boards or website for any plot vacancies.
As usual, if you have any questions or concerns about Wouldham please email,
write or telephone the Clerk. Everyone is welcome to attend our next Parish
Council meeting on Tuesday 3rd June in Wouldham Village Hall, starting at
7.30pm.

BE WILD ABOUT YOUR GARDEN! Competition coordinator, Maureen Rainey, says: “This is my 7th year
organising Wild about Gardens and I've met some amazing people with
wonderful wildlife havens - not all country acres! Some are tiny urban
plots, but they are all equally valuable in providing much needed
stepping stones to enable wildlife to move around our increasingly built
up county.”
Kent Wildlife Trust’s volunteer gardening advisors aim to visit as many
entrants as possible during the season and recommend gardens for
bronze, silver or gold certificates as well as giving out useful advice.
In addition, ‘Gold’ winners receive one of the Trust’s coveted Wild
about Gardens Blue Plaques and may be put forward for a special award
for gardens of particular merit. BE WILD ABOUT YOUR GARDEN!
Kent Wildlife Trust celebrated the launch of its 2014 Wild about Gardens
awards scheme last week at its headquarters and visitor centre at Tyland
Barn, Maidstone. A cake-cutting ceremony was followed by tours around
the recently developed Tyland cottage garden. There were wildlife-
friendly gardening displays and volunteer advisers on hand to offer tips
and advice. Guests included last year’s winners, and the scheme’s
sponsors and local authority partners.
The Wild about Gardens awards scheme is free to enter. Anyone who
gardens in Kent is welcome to take part, however large or small their
plot and whether they are a business, community group, school,
allotment, private garden or even a collection of adjoining gardens.
The closing date is 30th June.
The 11 categories are: Cool School for Nature, Best Community
Wildlife Project, Best Water Wise Wildlife Garden (all sponsored by
Southern Water); Best Wildlife Churchyard (sponsored by Kent
God’s Acre); Best ‘Dragon’ Garden (sponsored by Kent Reptile &
Amphibian Group); Best ‘Buzz’ Garden (sponsored by Bumble Bee
Conservation Trust); Best Garden for Bats (sponsored by Kent Bat
Group); Best Urban Garden - Jewel in the Town; Top of the Plots –
Best Wildlife Friendly Allotment; Best Small Wildlife Garden; and
Best Wildlife Garden in Kent.
Winners will be notified by the end of September and invited to
attend an awards presentation in November.
The entry form can be found at www.kentwildlifetrust.org.uk or
ask for a leaflet by calling 01622 662012.

BURHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS
A local resident has approached the Parish Council requesting the possibility of having a
defibrillator installed within the village. Fortunately, we have been offered a defibrillator
from Georgina Nicolettos, who is Constituency Assistant and Diary secretary to Tracey
Crouch. Georgina has been fund raising in the London Marathon and as a generous
donation Cardiac Science, the company who provides the machines has donated a
machine free of charge for Georgina’s efforts in supporting this cause, which Georgina
has confirmed has been allocated to Burham. However, the donation does not include a
cabinet which would be required. Several of the local businesses/residents have advised
that they would be willing to make a contribution and in fact we have already received
£50 from a Court Road resident. If you would be interested in making a contribution (no
matter how small), then please let me know.
Many thanks to those residents who submitted photographs of “Old Burham”, and to
Councillor Barritt who arranged to view Ray Sturgeon’s photograph collection. She
purchased the frames for the chosen photographs from her micro grant. and they now
look great on the wall of the Parish building.
Chairman’s Report 2014 As another busy year closes I would like to give an overview of the Parish Council’s
work over this last year.
Council Team. We said farewell to Chris Gunn who moved with his family to a new
job in Devon and although Chris was on the Parish Council for only a short period of
time he brought a great deal of expertise to the Council which, as Chairman, I found
very helpful. His replacement, Keith Mather, who is a long term resident of Burham has
stepped into his shoes and already has been most helpful to the everyday workings of the
Parish Council, including helping me with seat repairs on MR21 after the stormy
weather we suffered.
Skate Ramp/Fun Day. We were given a Promotions Grant from the Funders of the
skate ramp this year. The Parish Council used the monies for a Fun Day which was
much enjoyed on a really sunny day. A special vote of thanks to all helpers.
Community Centre & Village Hall. Both of these facilities are running well under the
watchful eyes of the Management Committees. I sometimes feel that residents may not
be aware of the time and effort the committee members contribute to achieve this. So on
behalf of all residents, the Parish Council convey heartfelt thanks to them.
Recycling. Our recycling goes from strength to strength. It was not that many years ago
when we had nothing and now it is so well used that I can’t imagine being without it.
like many others, I’m sure.
Landscaping. As per normal our contractor, Headland, continues to provide a very good
service to Burham.
Other Business. We welcome new residents to our village into the newly constructed
homes in Bell Lane and the Fleur De Lys site and of course also residents who have
moved into existing homes. I am sure you will soon settle in very well to our village way
of life.

almost on time, (the telephone company let us down), and on budget. We achieved a
really first class finished unit despite some headaches along the way! It would be really
remiss of me not to thank Vince Boozer and all his team for the excellent job they did
for the Parish Council on this project. Vince is a local builder using local labour.
During this coming year, our efforts will be directed towards the War Memorial
Gardens to enhance this special place for the residents of Burham.
As Chairman, I take time to look and listen to all our Council members and feel that
without them this village would not be such a fine place to live and so, in closing, I
would like to convey a huge vote of thanks to all Councillors and of course to our Clerk,
Pam Saunders, for such exceptional work done over this last year.
Roger Dalton, Chairman of Burham Parish Council - 28th April 2014

Wouldham All Saints Church of England Primary School
Here we are at the beginning of another very busy term and looking
forward to the summer weather, with all the opportunities to enjoy the
great outdoors. We are continuing to have lots of trips to parks,
swimming, colleges, art galleries and theatre visits.
The school is always busy with the children enjoying an extended
curriculum with clubs, during lunchtimes and after school. The children
are enjoying rugby competitions, netball, Zumba, ballet, and football,
nature club and we are planning activities and clubs for the summer term.
The children have been enjoying leading school worship, and also using
the puppets in worship. There has been a ‘Music Mayhem’ day, where the
children have been experiencing lots of different musical instruments,
from drums, guitars and huge cymbals and gongs.
We are always looking for opportunities to involve the local community in
the life of the school, and would love to hear from anyone who has a talent
they would like to share such as art, gardening, sewing and sports.
As the weather will hopefully be getting even better, our Otter class are
enjoying their weekly visits to Shorne Wood as part of Forest School.
They have been telling the story of the ‘Three Twigs and the Big Bad
Stick! There have been art trips to Turner contemporary for the juniors
and also a visit to Wild Wood for the infants. The school continues to
visit the library twice a week and have had visits from local artists.
We are planning lots of activities for this new term, forest school,
snorkelling, Pentecost Day,
Puppet club visiting Rochester
Cathedral, Kent Fire and
Rescue who are holding safety
sessions. There will also be
visits from the Friends of
Chernobyl’s Children this year
during their annual visit.
Finally, June is the time we
start welcoming our new
families due to join us in
September.
We look forward to getting to
know you all very soon!

WATCH YOUR STEP!
Each player will need two
coloured counters. You will also
need a dice. Put your counters
on the "start" space and throw
the dice.
The winner is the first
player to get both their
counters to the "finish"
space.
So, for example, if you throw a 6, you could move
your counters 6 and 0, 5 and 1, 4 and 2, or 3 and 3.
Be careful how you move, though, because any
counter landing on a "face-space" has to go right
back to the beginning of the game!
TO MAKE IT
EASIER, YOU
COULD DRAW
THIS OUT ON A
LARGER PIECE
OF PAPER
