Dear Friends,
A BIG DAY OUT AT LEYBOURNE CASTLE Our Parish Church is joining other churches from the Rochester Diocese
for this one day festival event. Please do join us for this. It takes place on
SUNDAY 19TH JULY, 1pm - 7pm
(Messy Church will not happen on this Sunday but back in August)
Activities for children and young people will include Story Telling,
Circus Skills, Music, Craft, Rock Traversing, BMX, Survival Skills and
Inflatables. There will be a barbecue. Our church is planning to have a
picnic together there.
Speakers on a range of issues include the Dean of Jerusalem. There will
also be various workshops, a Beer Tent and a Battle of the Choirs.
There will also be space in Leybourne Church for quiet reflection and
prayer, and the event will end with All Age Worship.
Admission is by donation. Parking is free.
I will be letting the organisers know roughly how many people are going
from Burham and Wouldham. It would be helpful, but not essential, if
you could let me know if you are planning to come and whether you
want to meet up as a group. You can email me or phone me or sign the
list in church. You can stay all day, or just a few hours.
I hope that our parish will be well represented at this. If you like outdoor
festivals with a party atmosphere this is for you, and it is a good
opportunity for parishioners of Burham and Wouldham to do something
enjoyable together as a group. In peace, Mike

Churchyard Working Group
Lately we’ve had a really good response for the working
parties in Wouldham churchyard. Thank you to all those
who took part. We would like to have a group of people
who come together on a regular basis to clear ivy and
weeds, tend to uncared-for graves, as well as carrying out
other specified tasks. This will help complement the grass-
cutting activity and keep the churchyard in good order. This work could
also be done alone at a time to suit you.

THE PEW CUSHION PROJECT AT ALL SAINTS CHURCH, WOULDHAM
This project is proceeding well and anyone interested in joining the
needle workers will be very welcome. We are working tapestry cushions
for the pews in memory of loved ones. The finished cushion will carry a
permanent label with the name of the donor and/or to whom it is
dedicated together with the name of the person who has worked the
cushion. Contributors will be contacted when their cushion is ready and
informed at which Service it will be dedicated.
Each cushion measures 52ʺ x 13ʺ and costs £170. Sharing the cost with
others who have expressed an interest is possible so contributions over
£30 are gratefully received. The cushions are worked by volunteers as it is
a non-profit making activity.

TRENPORT NEWS
Residents close to Trenport's Peters Village project have seen rapid
progress in recent weeks, aided by favourable weather.
The most obvious development is the scheme's associated bridge over the
River Medway where, following completion of shutter piling to reinforce
the embankments earlier this year, Trenport site contractor Bam Nuttall
has moved swiftly to install piling across the river and build the coffer
dams to enable the two bridge supports to be started.
The two dams are effectively watertight boxes, resting on the riverbed,
within which workers and machinery can work smoothly and safely.
Bam Nuttall's project manager, Rex Burgess, said: "We are 'on
programme' with everything despite some issues caused by the winter
weather where, in particular, rain made the chalk of the quarry
unworkable and
delayed some
earth-moving works.
"But the team caught
up well and we are
delighted with the way
things are going: all
the main road networks
are now in place and
surfacing and services
are going in to plan.

Burham C of E Primary
School
Term 6 started with our Wizard of Oz Inspiring Writing Week and our children
thoroughly enjoyed a variety of exciting surprises, including the results of a
‘tornado’ in the school field and the appearance of Emerald City in the Key
Stage 1 area! They produced lots of lovely writing and artwork in response to
this enriching experience. Special thanks to our ‘tornado expert’ who taught us
lots of facts about them.
The fire service came in to talk to our children about fire safety and it was
lovely to see so many dads, grandfathers and uncles at our Fathers’ Day lunch.
Our Year 6 children took part in the Church Schools’ Festival at All Saints’
Church. They also greatly enjoyed their trip to London for lunch followed by
attending a spectacular production of The Lion King. Year 6 have worked hard
all year on various enterprise projects to raise money for this trip so it was
richly deserved and we are glad they had such a wonderful time. We wish them
every success as they prepare to start at their new schools in September.
Our PTFA have been very busy this term – organising and running the Fathers’
Day Secret Room (greatly appreciated by our children and their dads alike!) and
now preparing for our Summer Fair on Saturday 11th July - all welcome. At the
end of this term we will say farewell to Mrs Tracy Greeney who has worked at
the school for eleven years. We thank her for her hard work and enthusiasm
and wish her many relaxing and happy times ahead, as well as some exciting
experiences!
The coming month sees us approaching the summer break but the activities
continue apace. Year 5 and 6 are very much looking forward to a day at
Arethusa Venture Centre at the start of July where they will be able to take part
in a wide range of exciting activities. Later this month our Key Stage 1 children
will be visiting Groombridge Place whilst Key Stage 2 are looking forward to a
day in Margate including a trip to Dreamland and fun on the beach!
Our staff continue to be trained in the new curriculum and two of our support
staff are in the process of completing teaching training. Our action plan for the
coming year is to further build on our achievements and to move our school
towards achieving ‘outstanding’ status. Please do get in touch if you are
considering our school for your child and we will be delighted to welcome you
and show you round. As always, all updates relating to our school can be found
on our website www.burham.kent.sch.uk
Wishing you all a wonderful summer. Michelle Grima, Headteacher

Wouldham C of E Primary School
Last month was incredibly busy with lots of exciting activities. It was great
that summer arrived at the beginning of June so that we could have lots of
outdoor fun! The biggest event of the month was our birthday celebration
which will hopefully be remembered for many more years to come.
Thank you to all who came along and shared our day with us and an
enormous thank you to the ‘Friends of Wouldham All Saints’ for providing
all of our children with a very special commemorative plaque specially
commissioned from Aylesford Pottery. We even had a number of children
go along to the pottery studio to help in the production of them!
As well as the birthday we’ve also enjoyed dressing as pirates, carrying out
Dragons Den presentations and a wonderful day of music where all of our
choir and instrumentalists showed off their talents. We have an amazing
number of children playing a wide range of instruments and our band is
beginning to take shape as well as having a few children preparing to take
‘grade exams’ at the start of July.
We’ve also enjoyed Kwik Cricket, a day with children from Belarus, a visit
from the Dogs Trust, trips to Cyclopark and a day of tennis in Eastbourne!
On top of all this we also had our ‘Summer Party’ on the 19th June which
was a great success – thank you to all who made this possible! It is always
a hectic day and great fun for the children and particularly good to have the
pupils working hard at organising and running stalls etc. The money raised
by ‘The Friends’ will be put to good use in the future to provide exciting
opportunities for the children.
June has also been valuable time for getting our Year 6 children ready to
leave us for secondary schools at the same time as welcoming our new
Year R children in readiness for September. We have a full class of Year R
for September with a few others on a waiting list which is a shame but a
sign of the growing success of the school. We still have a few spaces in
Years 3 to 6 for September, but not so many, so if you are new to the area
and looking for a school place then don’t hesitate!
Fun for July includes trips out, sporting activities, a day of Maths, school
reports, ‘Move on’ sessions, Show ‘n’ Share on Weds 15th, Superhero
Rewards, Shining Star awards, leavers assembly and our traditional water
fight on the very last day of term.
We are also due to say farewell to Miss Buxton who will be leaving us to
take up a new teaching role near Stratford upon Avon. Good luck Emily –
we will miss you but are sure we’ll keep up to date with your adventures!

and the soil and sky as canvas.’
As summer continues, it is the time to enjoy your garden.
By now your hanging baskets and pots should be putting on
their displays providing extra colour and cheer to your entrances and
pathways, and summer bedding will be providing colour to the beds and
borders. One of the most important tasks for this month is to ensure you
are dead-heading plants in your pots, baskets and borders on a regular
basis. It can be a very therapeutic task to wander through your garden
either early in the morning or in the evening & just snip off (or use your
fingers) any dead or fading blooms. This will ensure the plants continue
to put on flower. It is also essential that you continue to water your pots
and baskets on a daily basis, particularly when the weather is warm. Once
a month, or more often if you feel inclined, the application of a dilute
tomato feed or similar to the pots & baskets will keep them producing
flowers for longer and extend the life of your display.
July is also an excellent time to take cuttings of your perennial plants and
tender plants - use the fresh, young growth, remove the lower leaves and
place into a free draining cutting compost. Water in, and then water only
when the top of the soil feels dry. Keep cuttings in a frost free place
through to next spring when they can be planted into spaces in your
garden.
The vegetable garden by now should be producing fresh crops of peas and
broad beans, early potatoes can be dug up and salad crops should be
harvested while young and tender. It’s not too late to sow carrots,
radishes, beetroot and more salads, all of which can be quick crops used
to fill spaces and provide extra produce. It’s important to ensure that
thirsty crops such as runner beans, courgettes and potatoes are given a
thorough soaking at least once a week to ensure the water reaches the
roots which will keep the plants producing for longer.
Other things to be doing this month:
Continue to be vigilant with pests.
Hoe beds & borders to keep weeds at bay, this also helps to break the
surface to allow any rain to permeate down.
Pinch out tomato side shoots to concentrate growth to main stems.
Start thinking about any bulbs required for autumn planting.

BURHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS
At the May meeting, Councillor Dalton was nominated, seconded and accepted
the position of Chairman. The Vice-Chairman position was deferred until the
June Meeting
We would like to welcome two new Councillor’s, Jenny Doran and Lesley
Spencer, both co-opted onto the Parish Council at the May meeting
At the time of going to print, it is anticipated that the new piece of play
equipment “Spectra” will be installed in the recreation ground before the sum-
mer school holidays for the local youngsters to enjoy.
Police Report: 2 Crimes reported between 23/04/2015 and 14/05/2015.
YY/009297/15 - Bilking (driving off without paying) at Frost garage, ongoing
investigation. YY/008755/15 – Theft from a motor vehicle whilst parked in
Church Street car park. A vehicle entered and fuel pump removed. No Anti-
social behaviour reports have been made to police.
Some residents have expressed concerns regarding the newly constructed section
of Court Road. Latest information from Trenport “This road and all new roads
related to the Peters Village and new Medway crossing developments are subject
to continuing road safety audits as part of the design, approval and eventual
adoption process by Kent County Council”. Also the eventual speed limited on
Court Road will vary, dependent upon the section, of between 30 & 40mph”
At the time of going to print, the Parish Council is exploring the possibility
of changing the cardboard/paper recycling bank. Smurfit Kappa who up to
recently were paying us, have now advised that we will have to pay them for
each uplift of the container. Obviously not good news. We have found
another company who may be able to assist. Either way, we do not wish to
lose this facility, but we need to ensure that we are getting the best offer
available. In light of these changes, please could we ask residents to ensure
that cardboard boxes in particular are flattened down as much as possible.
This will allow more cardboard/paper to fit in the container and reduce the
number of uplifts and therefore reduce any charges. As reported last month, there is now a suggestion box in the lobby area of the
Parish Building, so if you have any comments to make or items that you would
like the Parish Council to address, jot your comments down and pop them in the
box (There are suggestion slips available in the lobby) as well.
If you have any items that you would like the Parish Council to discuss, just
give me a call on my new number 01634 685936, e-mail me on
[email protected] or come along to the monthly meetings, normally held
the last Monday of the month. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday
27 July 2015, 7.30 pm The Parish Building, ROCHESTER ROAD,
BURHAM. September’s meeting is scheduled for 28 September 2015, no
meeting held in August. Pam Saunders - Clerk
