Dear Friends By the time you are receiving this April edition we should hopefully be

seeing the first glimpses of spring With the gloomy winter weather and

constant reminders of all the bad news in the world itrsquos easy to lsquoslip into

slumprsquo So look no further than inside this magazine for some ways to help

lift the spirit

See on page 6 that Dennis will be out bird watching and also enjoying the

Burham marshes in spring He invites you to come along with him Later in

the month on 21st if you go down to Burham Old Church (page 6) yoursquore

sure of a big surprise For every bear that ever there was will gather there for

certain because todays the day the teddy bears have their picnic

To get us to enjoy being more active you can raise some money for the

Hospice and lsquoPEDAL for POUNDSrsquo (page 13) and there are Charlenersquos

Zumba Classes (page 12) both to help shake off the lsquowinter slumprsquo

I see that Mosaic are giving a concert at the Methodist Church (page 6) and

itrsquos always fun to go to a quiz night with some friends (page 4)

For a special treat therersquos a great outing to be had over to Spadework (page

15) A Farmerrsquos Market is starting where you can buy delicious fresh and

healthy produce Also their nursery is just the place to visit when thoughts

are turning to the garden and therersquos a bite to eat at the lovely cafe while

yoursquore there

Of course the 155 evening bus service continues to flourish Now that the

better weather and lighter evenings are with us there are new opportunities

to use the bus to be adventurous

From Wouldham there is special news about the lsquo60+CLUBrsquo starting up

(page 10) Donrsquot miss going along to make new friends meet up with old

friends and help make the new club a place where everyone will be wanting

to go There are many more events (see inside) so therersquos every prospect of

lifting the spirits this spring

Last but not least congratulations must go to Wouldham School for

achieving their greatly improved OFSTED rating (page 19) As head

teacher Carl Fitter says lsquoit truly reflects all the immense hard work put in

by all of our staff governors parents and volunteers And a massive lsquowell

donersquo to all of our children toorsquo Also the school is looking for more

governors Could you be a school governor and help ensure the continuing

improvement for the childrenrsquos education Congratulations to the whole

School So everythingrsquos looking bright Mary Davis

At a recent meeting of the Church it was decided that the proceeds from our Social Activities the Afternoon Tea Country Lunch and Book Exchange would be donated to a different charity each month pound100 has been sent to Water Aid and we will be supporting Maryrsquos Meals in April This charity provides food for very hungry children in school to help them to concentrate on their learning

As you are aware we are looking at the possibility of making some

positive changes to the war memorial gardens for our project for 2013

The war memorial itself will not be changedmoved or altered in

anyway itrsquos just the surrounding garden which we feel could do with

some TLC (tender loving care) and attention

We have received some good ideas from local residents including a

memorial wall for small plaques etc and planting of rose bushes (or

similar) but before any decision is made the Parish Council requested

that this notice be placed in the Parish Magazine to give all residents the

opportunity to put forward any ideas and or comments

We appreciate that the war memorial itself is close to many of your

hearts and therefore need to ensure that any changes to the surrounding

area are sensitive and keeping within the residentrsquos wishes

If you have any ideas comments in relation to the above give me a

The boot scrapers have now been

installed and are there for all

residents to use Hopefully they

will assist in keep the pavements

clearer of mud from the

recreation ground

Recently there have been incidents of fly-tipping If you see

any fly-tipping you can either report it direct to TMBC or

give me a call and I will report it for you

Please do not leave unwanted

goods or recycling items in the

recycling area if you are unable to

access the required bank Any left

items are classed as fly tipping A

bulky refuse facility is available

on 13 April 2013 between 800am

At the Parish Council meeting in March

Councillors discussed the progress of the

Village Hall project An application for the

Lottery Community Grant has been made in

order to part fund the project We are hopeful

that it will be successful and will keep you

posted

Mrs Harley a Wouldham resident attended

the meeting this month and told Councillors

about a club for OAPrsquos that herself and

Daphne Parish are looking to start in the

Village The days and times of the club are yet

to be decided but it will be held in the Village

Hall and our local KCC Councillor Peter

Homewood is willing to contribute some

funds from his Members Grant to support the

start up of the club If you are interested in

joining please contact either Daphne or Mrs

Harley for further information

We have had an enquiry from a young

Wouldham Resident about building a skate park on the Recreation Ground We

welcome all enquiries from our younger residents and think that it is great when

young people take the initiative and come up with ideas for local facilities We

shall be looking into the possibility of a skate park and taking advice from

Burham PC as they have already successfully built and sought funding for a

skate park on their recreation ground Please check local notice boards for

further information regarding this exciting project

155 EVENING BUS SERVICE UPDATE

March was the final month of the 155 evening bus

service trial period and in Mayrsquos magazine there

will be an update on how the trial went overall up

to the end of March However the full outcome of

the trial and decisions on the future of the service

will probably not be known until the June edition

Up to and including February the trial has gone

really well and the demand for the evening bus

service for Burham and Wouldham has been good Arriva have run the

service at a reduced rate in order to get the service up and running and

give it the best possible start but from 1st April the fare must go up to its

full rate

As always for those on the Internet there is ldquoThe Friends of the 155

Busrdquo website httpwww155buscouk which contains the most current

information on the 155 Bus Service as it becomes available and there is

also Arrivarsquos own website is at wwwarrivabuscouksoutheast

CHURCH TREASURER

Our present PCC (Parochial Church Council) Treasurer has moved

outside the Parish and we now have a vacancy for the position

This is an honorary position which will mostly involve recording all

income and expenses each month and then informing the PCC of these

The church does need to prepare yearly accounts based on these figures

but lots of help is available and the present Treasurer will assist in

completing these if needed

While previous experience is helpful it is not essential and it would give

lots of practical experience of simple bookkeeping The present

Treasurer is more than happy to give any help with a gradual handover if

Wouldham Church of England Primary School News

Great News We had an Ofsted inspection at the end of February and the

report was published at the beginning of last month Ofsted are very

thorough in their review of schools and the lsquobarrsquo for quality has been

raised considerably over past years Even so we have been given a

lsquoGOODrsquo rating and even better ndash an OUTSTANDING rating for the

lsquoBehaviour and Safetyrsquo at the school

We are thrilled to have this official endorsement of our work and we feel

it truly reflects all the immense hard work put in by all of our staff

governors parents and volunteers And a massive lsquowell donersquo to all of our

children too We obviously exist to serve the children of Wouldham ndash it is

their school not ours and so to have them described as lsquobehaving out-

standingly wellrsquo is a great credit and shows the commitment to learning

held by all

lsquoMake Your Best Your Standardrsquo is our motto and we aim to keep living

If you need help with a local journey there are a number of

volunteer driver schemes you can contact
