small choir rehearses weekly on Thursday evening.

Our present PCC (Parochial Church Council) Honorary Treasurer has moved
outside the Parish, so there is now a vacancy for the position. Previous
experience is desirable but not essential. This will involve keeping financial

Dear Friends, As the Magazine is going to print the countryside is bursting into leaf, the fresh
green colours of spring are breathtaking and the blossom is the icing. Just as the
hosepipe ban has been declared, the heavens opened and the rains have come. This
is a great relief particularly to farmers, allotment holders and gardeners but I under-
stand that all this rain will not make any difference to our water supply because
most of it is taken up at this time of the year by the trees, plants and evaporation. It
leads me to reflect on how we take our fresh clean water for granted and sometimes
waste it. I looked up a few water facts that can only help us to appreciate it:
The world’s fresh water supply is an integral part of the hydrologic cycle which has
been circling around for millions of years and does not increase. Our consumption
in the UK however has been rising by 1% a year since 1930 and each person here
currently uses about 150 litres of water every day. In contrast the average person in
the developing world uses just 10 litres of water every day for their drinking,
washing and cooking. (Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council ). This water is
not always available and/or clean meaning that it can carry life threatening, water
borne diseases to the populations. Of course, as countries develop, their water
usage increases putting further demand on water supply with the need for greater
investment in water management and technology.
I think about Christian Aid which people in Burham & Wouldham have
generously supported each year at the May door-to-door collection. Christian Aid
works with communities in developing countries and I have found this example on
their website describing one project to help a community with their water supply in
particular: The community of La Granja in Bolivia is one of many which depend on melting
glacier snow for their water supply. The glacier is getting smaller and this precious
source of water is dwindling. Families have had to abandon their homes to migrate
to the cities or other areas because they can no longer grow enough food to make a
living although they have everything else they need: a good climate and access to
markets. When the rainy season is over, the stream of water from the glacier is their
main source of water for crops. They share the stream with two other communities
and only have access to the water for two days a week and never know what time of
day the water will be there. Local organisations and Christian Aid’s partner Agua
Sustentable worked with this community to build a reservoir which collects rain-
water and siphons off a tiny proportion from the stream. They have combined a
scientific study with a project on the ground to provide immediate help. They can
also make predictions about the future and ensure the projects continue to help as
the climate continues to change. This reservoir is just one example of the projects
with Christian Aid which can be replicated in similar communities and supported
further by local or national government and the communities themselves.
We hope you will make a contribution to Christian Aid, however small,
when volunteers from the Church make their house-to-house collection
during the week: 13-19th May. Thank you. Mary Davis

Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council
CIVIC CHURCH SERVICE
All Saints Church, Wouldham
20th May 2012 at 2:30 pm
A Personal Note from Councillor Dave Davis
Last year, I was selected by Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council to be
their Deputy Mayor. Tradition has it that the Deputy Mayor becomes Mayor
the following year, so if all goes according to plan and I am duly elected
Mayor in May 2012, it will be an honour that I will be pleased to accept. In
the coming year, Mary, my wife, will be my Mayoress helping me to serve
the people of the borough and accompanying me to most of the functions.
As Mayor, I will not have an executive role. The Mayor’s main job is to be
the Borough’s public representative wherever required. The Mayor is also
the Chairman of the full meetings of Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council.
The post is strictly non political and mainly a ceremonial one. It is a special
role in the British way of life and Mary and I are looking forward to the
coming year as Mayor and Mayoress.
The first event in our mayoral year will be the Tonbridge and Malling Civic
Service which, by tradition, is held at the Mayor’s home church and, in my
case that is All Saints in The Parish of Burham and Wouldham. The Service
will be held on Sunday 20th May at 2:30 pm. Normally my Chaplain for my
Mayoral year would be my local vicar. However, at present we have an
interregnum where we have no vicar and so I’m delighted that Canon Liz
Walker, who used to be our vicar here, has very kindly agreed to be my
Chaplain for the year and she will conduct the Civic Service.
The Civic Service is a public event and whilst the borough will invite a
number of dignitaries to it, Mary and I hope that as many people as possible
from The Parish of Burham and Wouldham will come to All Saints in
Wouldham and enjoy this service of dedication and commitment of
Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council.

The recycling banks/area have now
been rearranged to allow further
space for the parking of additional

have been involved in the
re-arrangement.
Congratulations to our very own Dave Davis. As you are aware, last year
he was selected by TMBC to be their Deputy Mayor. As tradition has it
that the Deputy Mayor becomes Mayor the following year, so if all goes

pleased to accept. Mary, his wife will be the Mayoress helping him to
serve the people of the Borough. Well done Dave and good luck.

WOULDHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS
Thank you to all the volunteers who took part in the Bash the Trash event in March.
This proved to be a successful morning. A prolific amount of cigarettes butts were
noted outside all 3 public houses despite landlords providing bins for this. Can we
ask all smokers to please help to keep your village clean and litter free by disposing
of your cigarette butts in the correct places rather
than the pavement. Thank you!
We said goodbye to Wouldham’s Litter Warden
Joanne Harmer in April, who has done a great job
in keeping the village open spaces free of litter
over the years – thank you Joanne. The Parish
Council would like to welcome on board our new
village Litter Warden, Freddie Rance.
It’s Time To Get Fit!

Funding. Our application was supported by County Councillor, Peter Homewood.

in the village, listed on the survey form. Take a look at the Parish

IN MEMORIAM Elsie May Vivier born 5/5/1917
Sadly Elsie passed away at Maidstone Hospital on 19th February
2012 at the age of 94 years.
She was born in Eccles, the eldest of nine children and lived in
Eccles and Burham all her life moving to Burham in 1947 and lived
in the same house in Court Road for 65 years, raising five children
there.
She had several jobs during her life and her last was as caretaker of
the 'old' Burham school where she worked for 17 years until her
retirement in 1977. She was affectionately known by many of the
children who went to the school as “Auntie Elsie.”
Even though Elsie is no longer here with us, she will live on with
love and fondness in the hearts and memories of her family and all
who knew her.
All the family would like to thank everyone for their kindness and
support at this very sad time. It is much appreciated, thank you.
‘BASH THE TRASH’ LITTER PICKS
IN BURHAM AND WOULDHAM
A very big thank you to all the people who turned out in March on our
three ‘Bash the Trash’ litter picking Saturdays.
We collected nearly 60 bags of litter and identified a number of long
standing fly tips that Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council have
cleared.
Pride of place we feel must go to our youngest litter-picker who was 5
years old. He thanked us for a lovely morning and wanted to know when
our next event would be because he would bring his daddy along again.
Thanks to everybody who helped. The villages and the surrounds look
much better and ready for the summer.
Best wishes

Attachments Fostering
I started Attachments Fostering, a small independent fostering agency, in
2004 after 18 years in Local Authority social work. I wanted to provide a
personal service for foster parent’s who do the very difficult, but rewarding,
task of looking after children who are in care.
I believe I have an advantage in that I have experienced both sides of foster-
ing, as for 10 years my family fostered. We looked after 20 children and
young people.
Some of the children’s histories were heart breaking, like the two sisters who
had been taken into care as toddlers because of their mother’s mental health
problems. They were eventually placed with adopters who went on to
physically abuse them. They were placed with a short term family whilst a
child protection investigation was carried out then they came to me.
I have to be honest and say that, at times, their behaviour was very
challenging, but when there was a breakthrough, the sense of achievement
was immense.
As a family we were also privileged to look after unaccompanied minors -
that’s children coming to England from different countries. Often they are
sent by their families to escape conflict.
I also wondered how we as Christians would be able to care for someone of a
different faith, but it was fine. In the end I think it is just about respect, they
needed caring for and we could do that, as long as we respected their faith
and supported them by taking them to their place of worship, they in turn
respected our faith.
Attachments Fostering now wants to increase the number of carers we have
registered with us.
We are looking for all sorts of families who are looking for a challenge.
We provide good pay, 24 hour support and excellent training plus two weeks
paid respite each year.
So if you want to make a difference to someone’s life and would like more
information please contact me, Dot, or one of the team on:
01634-244555 or by email [email protected].
We would love to hear from you.

HMRC say “Do It Online Or Else”
From 1st April it is compulsory to file VAT Returns on-line. It is also compulsory for employers to file their Annual PAYE Return (P35) on-line and also returns of in-year movements (P45, P46 etc). Failures to do use on-line services will result in a penalty. Not everyone is confident about using the technology involved, but we can help! We can prepare the forms for you or just check your calculations and, of course, file them on line on your behalf. Please get in touch soon... Nb. It is still possible to do personal tax returns by hand, but only if you file before 31st October.
