In spite of the futility of the efforts to disparage theUniversity of Ilorin before now by its traducers, thenine-page media onslaught on the University in
March this year was masterminded to up the ante. This ismore so because of its timing to coincide with a criticalperiod of decision in the University.
However, to the utter consternation of itssponsors, the energy and resources invested in the projectamounted to a sheer waste of time. At best, it was akin toshaking the giant baobab tree to gain dewdrops. TheUniversity remains strong and unscathed by the undilutedlies and half-truths that are strewn throughout theineffectual tirade.
Like all life phenomena that are undergirded bylessons, a little reflection on the whole saga would revealsome lessons. One lesson is that the project failed partlybecause it was an overkill. Even in humongous cases ofcorruption that had grabbed headlines in our recentpolitical history, no newspaper has devoted nine editorialpages to their analyses. By the way, how many peoplewould read three pages of newspaper reportage everydayfor three consecutive days on the same issue? The wholereport dropped without a whimper. The social media thatshould have ordinarily buzzed ignored it like a plague. The lesson here is that you don't kill a mosquito with ahammer.
Then, every incident is always either a blessing ora lesson. The University of Ilorin has every reason toconsider it a blessing on the one hand for having freepublicity. As it happens in literary and other criticisms, every criticism ultimately is an indirect projection of thevictim. The most criticized works ultimately become themost popular and the critics of the University have to bethanked for contributing to the prominence and visibilitythe University enjoys.
The lesson at the other hand lies in the opportunityit offers to analyse some issues raised and separate thewheat, if any, from the chaff. There is an iota of sense inevery bit of nonsense. For instance, some Nigerianuniversities including Ahmadu Bello University wererecently flayed by an alumnus of the University of Ilorinand well-respected public affairs analyst cum essayist,Prof. Pius Adesanmi. When message reached the writerthat some of the issues he raised were being addressed, he
wrote another piece to laud the “great example” of theUniversity. In essence, another lesson the ill-conceivedhatchet job offers the University is reflection.
Besides, the report provides additional evidenceof the piquancy of Mark Twain regarding newspapers. An American author, journalist and intellectual, Twainhad contended that one is at the risk of beingmisinformed if one reads newspapers and beinguninformed if one does not read newspapers. As neitherof the two is desirable, it means that a middle courseshould be charted by readers. What lawyers say is hererelevant: caveat emptor or buyers beware.Another important lesson from the University is that it isnot all the time one immediately dignifies such attackswith a response. The University has largely ignored theshenanigans of its traducers by sometimes giving them“the best answer”. The easiest thing to do is to criticizeothers; the "best" players are the spectators.
Ultimately, the timeless lesson still remains thatin spite of the sacrifices of the University of Ilorin and theachievements it has recorded over the years, evident in itshigh rankings and highest subscription rate in thecountry, it is still subjected to condemnations. Yet, theUniversity must remain true to its values and allownoisemakers to continue to make their noise and remaingood as it is.
The story is told of a scorpion that fell into a welland was about to drown. A man, impassioned by doinggood, stretched his hand to the scorpion to pick andrescue it but he was stung. Not deterred, he tried it againand he was stung, and again he was stung. He thenfetched a stick, lowered it a bit in the well and thescorpion was successfully rescued from drowning.
A man who was standing by could not hide hisconsternation. How would a man bother to rescue ascorpion? He told the man that he should know that thescorpion would sting him and he shouldn't have botheredhimself. The good man replied, “You see, it is the natureof the scorpion to sting and it is my nature to help and begood. Let everyone hold on to their nature.”The better by far University will not be affected by thestings of the scorpions but will remain true to its corevalues of excellence, probity, innovation, integrity andcreativity.
