Describing his appointmentas “a call to national duty”, the newCouncil Chairman pointed out thatthe Council would be guided bytransparency in its affairs, saying,“We have to demonstrate very clearlyour full support for the presentGovernment 's anti-corruptioncampaign in the way and manner wehandle contracts. We have to ensurefull compliance with the Publicprocurement Act (2007) and followdue process fully. The days ofindividuals claiming that certainGovernment agencies or institutionshave been 'zoned' to them-you knowwhat that used to mean- arethankfully gone for good! Ourdecisions should always be guided bygood sense, equity, and what is bestfor Unilorin while conforming withdue process.”
Dr. Oyekan reminded hisfellow Council members of theonerous task before them, pointingout that “our measure of success inthe task is going to be the level ofexcellence we have managed to takethe University in the next four years”.
Quoting a Yoruba proverbthat “the one carrying elephant meaton his head cannot afford to bedigging the ground with his toes forcrickets”, he said, “We must befocused, and disciplined in pursuingthis task, and not allow ourselves tobe diverted by pressures from thosepursuing self-interests.”
While extending a hand offellowship and cooperation of theCouncil to the Senate members
whom he described as “realoccupants of the “Ivory Tower” aswell as the academic staff who, hestated “are at the vanguards of ourdrive to produce world-classp ro fes s iona l s” , t he Counc i lChairman said, “Our desire is to giveyou every support in your frontlinebattles.”
He told the story of hisdaughter, who, “while reminiscingabout her University days, relatedthat a lecturer used to tell his students,at his first encounter with them, thathe was going to fail 60% of them inhis course.”
Expressing the hope thatUnilorin would “not have such adestroyer in our midst”, Dr Oyekansaid, “Lecturers have the primarytasks of imparting knowledge, developing talents, and equippingtheir students to pass well in allassessment exercises they mayencounter in their lives. It is crucial toour developing a high reputation as atertiary educational institution to berenowned for imparting and notdistilling knowledge”.
To the Non-Academic Staff, who, he said constitute “the shoulderthat ensures that the gown stays inplace”, the Pro-Chancellor explainedthat “their role is crucial to thesuccess of the University in all itsendeavours and is well appreciatedby this Council. He said, “Those institutionslike Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard,MIT, that have attained world famefor academic excellence did not maketheir reputation by compromisingtheir high standards. All of them, without exception, try to select thebest students as freshers through theirwell-known very high entrystandards. We cannot afford to doany less, if we desire their level offame for Unilorin. We shouldestablish from now a very highstandard for our intake which shallnot be compromised by pressure toa c c e p t i n f e r i o r l e v e l s o fqualification”.

Talabi, urged the students toshow that indeed they are better byfar in their various work placementsby being of good conduct, addingthat “Unilorin is a centre ofexcellence and for a long time, theinstitution has enjoyed peace andtranquillity and a stable academiccalendar. For this, prove to the wholeworld that you are academicallyloaded”.

For Unilorin, I have a dream – Oyekan
For most of last week, members of the recentlyinaugurated Governing Council of the University ofIlorin were on campus to hold their inaugural meeting.
In his opening remarks at the agenda-setting meeting, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Dr.Abdullah Jibril Oyekan, laid out a veritable road map for thenew Council, setting a target that the University must meet inthe next four years.
, this week, brings you, our dear readers, excerpt from this visionary agenda. Enjoy it:
Town & Gown
'primus inter peres'
“I will like to share with you my thoughts on how we canproceed with this our onerous assignment. Let me begin withmy vision of what Unilorin should be.
“I dream of a Unilorin that in a few decades will be ofworld-renown, producing Nobel Prize winners on regularbasis and with many of its personnel prominent on manyfrontiers of knowledge. Consequently, my mission is to see thatthis our Council takes the first step as contained in the Chineseproverb that a journey of two kilometres begins with one step.Let us start now the laying of the foundation of an institutionthat would possess a huge universal repute.
“My idea of our modus operandi is to operate as awell-coordinated team with the Chairman as Captain, as
, and not as a boss or 'Sole Administrator'.Because of the hugeness of the University, we may need todivide up amongst ourselves the various Faculties for oversightfunctions. We are yet to be educated on the functional standingCommittees. No doubt, we will be spreading ourselves overthem.
“Let me remind us that we have only four years inwhich to leave a legacy that this our Council truly lifted thisUniversity to a much higher level of excellence and distinction.
“Our decisions should always be guided by goodsense, equity, and what is best for Unilorin while conformingwith due process.
“An essential requirement for the realization of ourdream for Unilorin is the small issue of funding. The Hon.Minister of Education said it unashamedly that the FederalGovernment cannot carry the financial burden of educating thenation alone. It follows therefore that Council must thinkseriously about establishing an enduring and effective unitwhose sole function is the raising of funds for Unilorin. TheUnit will have to be equipped to search for sources of fundsworldwide; from United Nations agencies like UNESCO,UNIDO, etc. to various private philanthropic bodiesworldwide. The Alumni of the University are also anothergood source that can be tapped. However, this requires ourestablishing a viable system of tracing and contacting them.Let me now extend the hand of cooperation of this Council tothe members of Unilorin family.
“I salute the Senate members, the real occupants of the“Ivory Tower” and who really make the name for ourUniversity. The main task of making Unilorin produce NobelPrize winners and prominent figures on the frontiers of humanknowledge, falls largely, almost entirely, on the shoulders ofSenate members. I assure the Senate of the wholeheartedsupport of Council in pursuing this most laudable goal. Theremust be the strong self-belief of “we can do it” among theSenate members.
“Next group is the Academic Staff who are at the
vanguard of our drive to produce world-class professionals. Our desire is to give you every support in your frontlinebattles. The other day, my daughter, while reminiscing abouther University days, related that a lecturer used to tell hisstudents, at his first encounter with them, that he was going tofall 60% of them in his course. I hope and pray that we do nothave such a destroyer in our midst. Lecturers have the primarytasks of imparting knowledge, developing talents, andequipping their students to pass well in all assessmentexercises they may encounter in their lives. It is crucial to ourdeveloping a high reputation as a tertiary educationalinstitution to be renowned for imparting and not distillingknowledge.
“As for the Non-Academic Staff; they constitute, touse a Yoruba expression, “the shoulder that ensures that thegown stays in place.” Their role is crucial to the success of theUniversity in all its endeavours and is well appreciated by thisCouncil. We look forward to collaborating with them in theefforts to make Unilorin a world-rated University.
“The student population, for its part, is required to bedevoted, focused and be mostly concerned with its primarytask of acquiring knowledge and skills to equip itself to be ableto stand on his own feet and hold his own in his disciplineanywhere. They should guard against being diverted from thistask by discredited, anti-social groups. Their success is oursuccess.
“I also will like to extend our hand of co-operation tothe organized labour of the University. Our common goal isthe success of Unilorin. We should be able to have civilizeddialogue at all times. We should be able to come to anAgreement between us that on no account will our institutionbe brought to a standstill on account of any grievance ordisagreement. Council will promote the welfare of all staffwith whatever is available financially. It is planned topersuade Council to adopt meritocracy; operate withtransparency and seek to carry organized labour along in allmajor decisions that impact on staff welfare.
'In concluding this speech, VC, DistinguishedMembers, I will like to remind us, once again, of the oneroustask before us and that our measure of success in the task isgoing to be the level of excellence we have managed to take theUniversity in the next four years. As the Yoruba proverb puts it“The one carrying elephant meat on his head cannot afford tobe digging the ground with his toes for crickets. We must befocused, and disciplined in pursuing this task, and not allowourselves to be diverted by pressures from those pursuing self-interests.
“In pursuit of excellence, we cannot toleratemediocrity or below mediocrity. Those institutions likeOxford, Cambridge, Harvard, MIT, that have attained worldfame for academic excellence did not make their reputation bycompromising their high standards. All of them, withoutexception, try to select the best students as freshers throughtheir well-known very high entry standards. We cannot affordto do any less, if we desire their level of fame for Unilorin.
“I pray to Allah, the Almighty, to be our guide, andprotector throughout this assignment; to grant us thenecessary strength and resolve and in the end bless us withresounding success.”
