PAGE TWO TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 16, 2015
Vacation Bible School (VBS), held last week in our parish, is a popular summer pro-gram for children from
grades K-6. We had over 250 children, 75 teenage volunteers, and 45 teachers participating. The program included Bible stories, live music, games, crafts, snacks, and skits. It was a great experience and an opportunity for our children to learn about God and grow in faith. I have received a lot of positive feedback from parents, noting that their children have learned how to pray and read the Bible. This is a great sign that our parish is alive and active and children are engaged in the parish. For this, I am very thankful to the organizers of VBS, especially to our teachers and volunteers, as well as the children and families who were part of the program this summer. A special word of thanks goes to Laura Braden and Nira Clark who worked very hard to organize this program and make it a joyful learning experience for our chil-dren. Today’s readings stress the fact that the Holy Eu-charist, the perfect fulfillment of the symbol of the manna of the Old Testament, is the Food that gives us everlasting life. In last Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus declared that the Bread He gives us is His
Flesh and Blood. This Sunday, Jesus asserts that to eat this Bread is to have eternal life, which is the hope and goal of every believer. In today’s first reading, taken from the Book of Proverbs, Lady Wisdom, representing God, offers wisdom and understanding in the form of a rich banquet to all those who were willing to accept her invitation. For Israel, Wisdom ultimately came from God, and was at times almost equated with the divine teachings in the Torah. Wisdom came to be understood as the way God manifested Him-self in the world. The early Christians identified Jesus as the Wisdom of God. They regarded the Eucharist as Wisdom’s banquet, where they shared in the Divine Wisdom, now Incarnate in Jesus. For the fifth Sunday in a row, we hear from Saint Paul writing to the Ephesians. Here Paul, like other New Testament writers, describes Christ as the personification of Old Testament Wisdom. In last Sunday’s reading, Paul urged the early Chris-tians to imitate God by loving as Christ loved. Christ’s self-sacrificing act of dying on the cross was God’s Wisdom made manifest. This ultimate Act of Love is worthy of imitation. Paul further advises the Gentile Christians to show their grati-tude to God for

COLLECTION REPORT
Prayer list for our Military
As a faith community, let us keep
all who serve our country during
these troubled times in our pray-
ers. We pray especially for those of our parish who
are serving.
If you have a friend or relative who is serving in our military, and want their name to be added on our prayer list, please con-tact the office at: (619) 463-6629 ext. or via e-mail [email protected].
Names in bold are newly added this week. Also pray for the special intentions written in the Book of Needs in the back of the church.
PRAY FOR RELATIVES AND OUR FAMILY
continued from page two…. calling them, along with the Jews, to Christianity, and for giving them a share in Christ’s life. He ex-plains that they will be able to receive this life by avoiding their former foolish ways, like getting drunk on wine. Instead they are to be Spirit-filled, with their talk edifying, always trying to discern the wisdom of God. Today’s Gospel is the last passage of Jesus’ lengthy discourse on the Bread of Life. Jesus as-serts that eating the Living Bread, Himself, allows us to participate in His Life and to grow here and now in our eternal life with God. Jesus emphasiz-es the eternal-life dimensions of eating His Body and drinking His Blood. Those who have faith in Jesus and partake in the Divine Banquet have al-ready stepped into Heaven in this life, sharing in God’s Own life, and therefore in eternal life. Our participation in the Eucharist also solidifies and energizes our relationship with Christ and with one another. When we share in the Body and Blood of Christ in the Holy Eucharist, Jesus Him-self comes to dwell within us. This Communion with the Lord makes us One Body, brings us eter-nal life, and sends us forth to be Christ's Body for the rest of the world.

Daily Prayer for Priests
O Jesus, I pray for your faithful and fervent priests;
For your unfaithful and tepid priests; For your priests laboring at home or
Abroad in distant mission fields. For your tempted priests;
For your lonely and desolate priests; For your young priests; For your dying priests;
For the souls of your priests in Purgatory.
But above all, I recommend to you The priests dearest to me;
The priest who baptized me; The priests who absolved me from
my sins; The priests at whose Masses I assisted and who gave me
Your Body and Blood in Holy Communion;
The priests who taught and instructed me;
All the priests to whom I am indebted in any other way
(especially……………..….) O Jesus, keep them all close
to your heart, And bless them abundantly
in time and in Eternity
Amen

Vacation Bible School (VBS) was a huge suc-cess again this year, and it's all thanks to you! We spread God's love to over 240 kids, 70 teen helpers and 50 adult volunteers. We did arts and crafts, wa-
ter games, snack, scripture and music. This is an amazing week. It cannot be done with one or two (or even 10 people). It takes a large crew of people, a congregation to make something like this happen. All your dona-tions and prayers really went into effect dur-ing this week. We have VBS every summer during the first week of August. We start planning in January, and sign up volunteers and students in May. Interested in becoming more involved in this amazing ministry? Ask Mrs. Laaperi in the school office and we can get in touch. Can't wait till next year, the theme is "Cave Quest"!
