During the first Decade of existence the Chamber surely grew beyond all expectations to a staggering 525 members, indicating a real growth of 52 members per annum. At times the membership numbers were touching the 600 mark but due to the 2008 economic crisis the membership count became static, and it is during these though times that we really appreciate the persistence of the above members.
In 2015 another 39 members will be celebrating their ERCOC Decade Membership.
Chamberlink as service providerI would also seize this opportunity to express my sincerest gratitude to the Staff of Chamberlink. Since inception they relentlessly provided the much needed services to delight the ERCOC members, ensuring continues loyal member-support experienced by the Chamber.
Arbitration Board and Legal aidThe newest addition to their impressive list of services provided by their sister Company “The East Rand Commercial Arbitration Board” will surely fill a much needed cap in the overloaded judicial services. Affordability was also addressed as they will be offering the service as a “Legal Aid” to member companies, on an inexpensive monthly rate.
Inbound Cyber MarketingThe Chamber is also very excited with Chamberlink's Partnership venture with the American company, Hubspot Inbound Marketing. We can assure members that they may look forward to a very exclusive and extremely professional method of inbound marketing, soon to be on offer to all ERCOC members. The name under which Chamberlink will trade to provide this service will be known as “HUBLINK Inbound Marketing Agency”.

As Employers labour aid Chamlabour, has grown to an astounding 125 members.
Not only were these members represented at the CCMA, Labour court and internal hearings, but services like Employment equity. Skills development plans were timeously handed in to the Department of Labour.
BBBEE Consulting
The above service delivered to 104 ERCOC members by Chamberlink has now been upgraded with a better working relationship between Cenfed BEE Verification Agency and Chamberlink. A verified scorecard will be made available at the end of each financial period to the contributing member. No longer will there be a difference in the final score between Consulting and Verification, unless Cenfed on the day of the BEE audit, is presented with different documentation and or information to that which was supplied during the consultation period.
To overcome the government's persistence and pressure on business entities to advance black ownership, ERCOC's members can rest assured. The team combination of Chamberlink and Cenfed will provide them with expert legal advice to safeguard that some form of black ownership can be implemented to provide a positive difference on their ROI, implicating that they will not have to lose control of their company.

Correct Exposure
The saying “It is not what you know but who you know” has never been more accurate in these days. Individuals and companies are making sure that they receive the correct exposure and to be “with-it” by making use of social media.
It seems that every entity or persona needs to be on all the social media pages and if not, you simply don't “exist”. In the past, only VIP's and celebrities enjoyed the privilege of being mentioned in the printed media, be it good or bad publicity. At present everybody uses the social media to discuss anybody, including themselves. Good or bad reports are the order of the day.
Chambers of Commerce
Fortunately the image of a Chamber of Commerce has remained untarnished and still enjoys the status of “the true voice of industry”. So much so that certificates of origin and letters of authenticity is accepted internationally as a true reflection and confirmation of information provided.
Literature and books of reports on stock exchange listed companies, has been in circulation for some time. It was published with the aim on providing investors with information to take a calculated risk in their investments.
In the past we all relied on a representative or salesperson from a company whom was clothed well. They arrived in style at your front door to impress you enough so that you feel comfortable to engage in a business relationship with the proposed entity.
Confirmation
With the arrival of the internet we now rely on the images on the websites. We know for a fact that these images might not reflect the true culture and persona of the projected entity. In most instances true and honest confirmation is lacking.
ERCOC
Since inception in 2004 the East Rand Chamber of Commerce and Industry, ERCOC, has realised the need of authentication of their members. They have been providing the service of writing true and honest reports as a basic membership service, regarding their members.These reports, if needed are updated annually. They are used by financial institutions and investors to obtain the required information to make calculated risk analyses prior to investing in the business entity.

Billion Group set to start building malls for Africa
THE Billion Group, a property developer that is also the asset manager of JSE-listed Rebosis Property Fund, is to start building a number of medium-sized malls elsewhere in Africa within the coming months.
A year ago, Billion and R e b o s i s C E O S i s a Ngebulana said Billion could in the future look at separately l ist ing i ts Afr ican mal l p o r t f o l i o . B i l l i o n w a s undertaking 12 medium-sized re ta i l shopp ing cent re developments in Angola, Ghana, Nigeria and Uganda, he said at the time.
This week, Mr Ngebulana said Billion was "taking our
time ... although there is virtually no proper retail offering, there are … unique factors relevant to each country, hence careful planning prior to execution is crucial".
"Planning in a foreign territory is far more important than rushing to put something in the ground — our planning has been meticulous and vigorous."
He said the group would be "on the ground in the next three to six months with a lot of them (the developments)".
Last year, Mr Ngebulana speculated that Billion’s Africa-focused retail property fund could be listed in London or dual-listed in London and Johannesburg.
Meanwhile, JSE-listed Delta Property Fund is in the process of launching the JSE’s first outright African real estate offering — Delta International Property Holdings. This would be by reverse-listing a mixed portfolio of properties into Delta International, formerly known as Osiris Properties International.
Delta International’s flagship property will be the 30,000m² Anfa Place mall in Casablanca.
Delta Property Fund CEO Sandile Nomvete said this week that Delta, which had a 25% shareholding in Delta International, expected strong returns from the venture due to the rand hedge it offered as well as good yields on the assets. Mr Nomvete said Delta International would “not take development and the associated risk”.
While analysts have voiced support for funds bringing African real estate exposure to the JSE, a number of the sector’s largest funds prefer to focus on developed markets such as Australia and Europe.
This is partly because there are few available assets in Africa of the size and quality that large income funds are after.
Many of the developments under way are being driven by private equity funds.

Black business must ‘take advantage of government’s ambitious plans’
GOVERNMENT’s ambitious target of procuring 75% of its goods locally is a "bankable" opportunity for black business to take up and run with, acting President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Thursday night.
Mr Ramaphosa urged members of the Black Business Council (BBC) to take advantage of the opportunity government had presented.
He called on black business to take up their rightful place in the South African economy — the radical economic transformation promised by the African National Congress (ANC) was about ensuring faster inclusive growth combined with high employment creation, reduced inequality and the "deracialisation" of the economy.
But the elephant in the room was the Treasury’s procurement rules.
The Black Business Council, a powerful lobby group, wants the Preferential Procurement Policy Framework Act (PPPFA) scrapped as it feels the act limits the potential of black business to secure government contracts.
"Government has set an ambitious target to buy at least 75% of goods and services from South African producers. Herein lies a real opportunity for black business ... make sure that you take those opportunities up," Mr Ramaphosa told a council gala dinner in Midrand.
He described the government’s target as a "bankable business opportunity"."All you need to do is come forward ... the opportunity is well laid out to you."
Ahead of Mr Ramaphosa’s address, however, council chairman Lawrence Mavundla said the council felt the act excluded black business, in particular, from procurement. The weighting of 80% on price and 20% on black economic empowerment (BEE) for smaller tenders, and a 90% weighting on price with 10% weighting on BEE for larger tenders was a problem for the council.
The dinner was held to celebrate the formation of the new Small Business Development Ministry led by minister Lindiwe Zulu. The council had lobbied for the creation of such a ministry.
Mr Ramaphosa said: "We want business to lead. It must develop strategies, working with government, labour and the rest of the business community to train tens of thousands of engineers, actuaries, accountants, teachers, doctors and project managers.
"Black business must look at how emerging entrepreneurs can be financed, supported and provided with market access," Mr Ramaphosa said.
Mr Ramaphosa said radical transformation needed partnerships with organised business and labour to stabilise the troubled labour market, thereby improving work conditions and productivity.
Ms Zulu said black business needed to spearhead an "economic toyi-toyi of a special kind" to deracialise the South African economy".
"In my travels I have been to 43 of Africa’s countries. I know that small businesses operate under difficult circumstances. Many have no support from government, no access to funding and yet they are thriving. We need to ask ourselves how do they do that in such difficult (conditions)," Ms Zulu said.

Awnings are not just decorative additions to a property. They are aesthetically pleasing and can make your home or business stand out from the rest. But there are many practical advantages to installing awnings, which go beyond just curb appeal.
If you’re looking to purchase awnings, you probably already know all this. Now, you need to choose the right one so that you can maximise its benefits. With such a wide selection available, from retractable awnings to all weather awnings and everything in between, where do you start?
Here are three questions to consider when making your selection.
1. Why are you installing the awning?If you simply want to enhance the appearance of your home, choose the awning that most appeals to you visually, and which best compliments the design of your home. However, if you have a specific reason for installing an awning, you’ll need to be a bit more selective.
If you wish to expand an outdoor area, choose a fold arm retractable awning that can be easily extended when needed, and easily pulled back again. This maximises shady areas when required, but still allows the light to enter when you want it to. If you require sun protection for yourself and your possessions, choose an awning that is going to block out harmful UV rays in your home. Bonus: This will also help you to optimise energy use in your home, by requiring less heating in winter and less cooling in summer.
2. Where are you installing the awning?Window awnings for homes are usually smaller than corporate awnings, and can be manually opened and closed with ease. In this case, you could choose a retractable awning that you can simply open or close manually, as often as you need to.
However, if you’re installing larger awnings, or awnings for shops, offices or business parks, you may wish to install motorised awnings that can be opened or closed at the touch of a button. Alternatively, you may decide that you don’t need a retractable awning at all. The design or specific building requirements may call for a permanent fixture that does not need to be adjusted.
3. What is your budget?With so many options to choose from, it’s easy to forget that you might have a specific budget to stick to! Work out how much you want to spend on the awning, and then consider the options available in this price bracket. This will help you to narrow your focus to a few specific styles.
While it’s important not to over-extend yourself financially, remember that when it comes to buying fabric awnings for homes or offices, you’re making a long-term investment in the property. While it may cost you a bit at first, it could reap great rewards when you decide to sell one day. Moreover, an attractive shop-front will catch customers’ eyes and attract more business.
