More information is available on the NCBVA Web site at www.ncbva.org or contact Tom Monahan 407-788-1996.

NCBVA Books RCI's Newest, Largest Cruise Ship for 2007 Convention The largest cruise ship in the world, Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the seas®, will be the venue for NCBVA's 2007 Annual Convention. Departing from the Port of Miami on February 18, this will be the second Convention Cruise in the Association's history—the first in 2000 was one of the highest attended meetings ever.

Christened just this past May, Freedom® nudged the Queen Mary 2 out of its long-standing bragging rights as world's largest. It is 237 feet tall, approximately the same height as two of the Statue of Liberty, placed head to toe. And it's 1,112 feet long—that would be taller than the Eiffel Tower if stood on end. The QE2 carried about 3,000 people; this new ship holds more than 4,000 passengers. There are 15 passenger decks. The ship comes in at 160,000 gross registered tons—almost four times the registered tonnage of the Ti-tanic!

Freedom of the Seas is not only the largest but it's also one of the most innovative ships ever built. Company spokesmen point out that they did not set out to build the world's largest ship. They just started making a list of all the new features they wanted to incorporate and to make them all possible, it ended up immense. A brand new feature is the H20 Zone, or the "sprayground," which

has colorful fiberglass sculptures shooting jets of water, geysers shooting from the ground and water cannons. There's even a lazy river and waterfall inside! At night, this area, with the integration of an incredible lighting system, will be transformed into a sculpture garden.

There's a sports pool and a play pool, a rock climb-ing wall, a putting course, a fitness center including a boxing ring; a spa, and the Promenade—a 445-foot-long shopping, dining and enter-tainment boulevard as long as a football field. At night, street parades take over the Promenade. There's a 3,600 volume library; an ice skat-ing rink!

For dining there's a three-level dining room but also smaller, casual restau-rants and pizza bars.

The seven-day, six night voyage will include stops in Cozumel, Mexico;

George Town, Grand Cayman; Montego Bay, Jamaica, and Labadee, Hispaniola. The ship returns to port at 7 am on February 25.

NCBVA has reserved 60 cabins for convention attendees and 40 of those cabins have already been sold! The Convention Cruise rates on the next page reflect the price per person for the cruise AND convention participation, which will include meetings and some special group events.

Industry News and Notes Space Funeral Company in Talks with Chinese Officials of Space Services Inc., a company that specializes in "memorial spaceflights" where the deceased can fly aboard a commercial rocket into space, say they are in talks with a Beijing funeral home, Great Wall Chinese Shrine, to be a Space Services distributor in China.

The process involves placing part of a cremated individual into a lipstick-sized container to ride on a rocket carrying other cargo. After the rocket is launched, family and friends can view it online until the vessel burns up in the atmosphere.

Depending on the rocket and its mission, the remains could stay in orbit from a few minutes to a few centuries.

Prices in China will probably be comparable to those in the U.S., which can range from $995 for one gram of cremated ash to $5,300

for seven grams, say company executives. Space Services Inc. hopes to conduct its next memorial

spaceflight in October. Space Services plans to again try to launch some of the remains of Canadian Star Trek actor James Doohan into orbit. An earlier attempt to do so was delayed by a fire on the rocket slated to carry Doohan's ashes in the final frontier.

Mixer's Latest Twin-Shaft Mixer Mixer Systems has added a 54 cu. ft. twin shaft mixer to the industry's longest line of mixers. Capacities for the twin shaft mix-ers now range from 54 cu. ft. to 318 cu. ft. Each model comes with Mixer System's counter-current mixing design that achieves 100% mixing coverage in as little as 60 seconds. Standard equipment on Mixer Systems' twin-shaft mixers includes a self-diagnostic sys-tem. It monitors oil and motor temperatures, as well as fluid levels in the hydraulic system and gear case. If any measurements get out of normal operating range, the Mixer Monitor sends an automatic warning. Mixer System backs the twin-shaft mixer and all its mixers with a 5-year drive train warranty. Mixer Systems is an Associate Member of NCB VA.

Legislating Respect? What was once just a common courtesy has become law now in Louisiana. The recent bill passed in the Senate now requires that motorists and pedestrians must yield the right of way to funeral processions. The law formally defined what a funeral procession is, removed liability from funeral homes and levied a fine on anyone who cuts into a procession escorted by police.

Rep. Hunter Green, R-Baton Rouge, who co-authored the bill, said its purpose was not to legislate respect but to provide for safer processions. Green said it was police officers who initially sought more protection while escorting processions, citing that they are one of the leading causes of police motorcycle accidents.

The law does not require that each car be marked by a pendant but it does require that everyone in the procession have their emergency flashers on.

Wayward Casket State troopers in Trenton, NJ got a chance to practice their pallbearer skills after an empty coffin was discovered along the interstate Highway . The $10,000 casket, property of the Batesville Casket Co. in Moonachie, was being delivered to Rhode Island but it slipped off a tractor trailer through an "unsecure door," according to a the State Police Captain. The driver didn't realize the coffin fell off onto the highway.

Beefcake Morticians A dozen funeral directors have picked up on an idea that has been used by firefighters and police officers to raise money for a cause—posing for a calendar. In true beefcake-calendar style, the cover features the whole shirtless group in a pristine graveyard, holding shovels and wearing black slacks and dress shoes. It might raise eyebrows but some say it at least demonstrates that not all funeral directors are morbid, dark or sinister. Funds from the sale of the calendar, due out in October, will raise money for breast cancer.

New Estate Planning Checklist By J. Scott Calkins, Esq. NCBVA Counsel

There is good news for estate taxes in 2006. The amount exempt from estate tax increased this year from $1.5 million to $2 million and the top estate tax rate dropped from 47% to 46%. Also, for those who want to use a simple means of decreasing estate tax liability, the annual amount a person can give to any individual without paying gift tax increased from $11,000 to $12,000 ($24,000 for a married couple filing a joint return).

If you have not yet reviewed your estate planning to reflect these changes, now is the time to do so. The following checklist published by Federated Funeral Directors of America will make the review process easier.

Review your will and make sure it still reflects your wishes. Consider the effect on your plan of any births, deaths,

marriages, divorces or disabilities among family or other beneficiaries. Check that your named executor is still capable and willing to do the job. I encountered this problem myself when my executor had an emergency triple by-pass.

Review your Living Will and make sure your wishes are clearly stated about medical treatment in the event you become terminally ill. Ensure that your estate tax plan is still appropriate in light of any

Calkins changes in estate value and estate taxes. If you have a Living Trust, make sure any assets you acquired since your last update have been titled in the name of your trust. Review your beneficiaries for insurance policies and retirement plans. Make sure your insurance coverage is still appropriate.

It's important to meet independently with your estate planning counsel, your broker, your tax advisor, your CPA and your named executor to review your estate tax planning in view of the above changes and suggested actions. As you know, we all are going through many tax changes that affect our estate planning and it is extremely appropriate for you to sit down with your advisors.

Jones, Man with "Voice of Vader" To Keynote NFDA Convention The National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) has announced that actor James Earl Jones will head an impressive list of keynote speakers for the 125th National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) Convention & Expo, "Honor Your Past, Shape Your Future," Oct. 15-18,2006, in Philadelphia. Jones will present the Convention Luncheon speech on Tuesday. Titled "The Culture Quest: How Culture Affects Us and How We Affect Culture," this dynamic presentation will examine how local, national and global cultures shape our lives, and how we, in turn, shape and reshape the world we inhabit.

Jones's distinctive voice has resonated across generations as both the "voice" of CNN and of Darth Vader in the "Star Wars" trilogy of movies. But it is his impressive and varied body of work as an actor that has made Jones one of the best known performers of stage, film, and television for decades. Jones earned worldwide acclaim and a Tony Award for his brilliant stage

portrayal of boxer Jack Johnson in "The Great White Hope," and later was nominated for an Academy Award for reprising that role on the big screen. He has been nominated

for several Emmys and won two in 1991 as Best Actor in a drama series for "Gabriel's Fire," and as Best Supporting Actor in the movie "Heat Wave." He co-starred with Kevin Costner in "Field of Dreams" and alongside Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin in "The Hunt for Red October." He was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President George H.W. Bush in 1992 and is also the recipient of the prestigious NAACP Hall of

Fame Image Award. Jones will appear courtesy of Trigard Vaults.

Other Speakers The first general session will feature Canadian funeral director Gerry Lougheed, who will help convention participants examine their ability to realize personal and professional goals with effective communication, genuine commitment and a capacity for change.

The Convention Breakfast speaker will be Sue Thomas, upon whom the PAX TV show "Sue Thomas, F.B. Eye" is based. Having suffered a sudden and instant loss of hearing at 18 months and then diagnosed with multiple sclerosis as an adult, she has an amazing story of hope and dedication in overcoming obstacles that transcend age, race and culture, and is sure to touch peoples' hearts.

Closing the convention will be Vince Papale, who went from a school teacher and part-time bartender in 1976 to a "walk-on" professional football player with his hometown Philadelphia Eagles. Papale overcame the odds and made the team at age 30, becoming the oldest rookie in National Football League history. His amazing story is being made into a feature film starring Mark Wahlberg as Papale. The movie is set for release in fall.

South Florida Veterans Cemetery May Be VA's Most Beautiful Yet Construction is under way on the long-awaited South Florida National Veterans Cemetery, which The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is already touting it as perhaps its most beautiful. Almost every burial site will have a water view . No other national cemeteries has such extensive water features."

The first military interments are slated to begin in the spring of 2007. The 315-acre cemetery will be the resting place for 110,000 veterans and their spouses. The property is largely wetlands and was delayed because of environmental concerns. The environmental features will include 73 acres of preserved wetlands and a 4.5-acre gopher tortoise habitat. The start of construction was delayed by intricate negotiations between the VA and the Army Corp. of Engineers.

The cemetery also had to get permits from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and other regulatory agencies to protect the habitats of indigo snakes and wood storks in addition to the gopher tortoises.

The gopher tortoise makes burrows that also provide shelter for the snakes, opossums, burrowing owls, lizards and other animals. Both environmentalists and the VA were pleased by the result of negotiations. The 45-acre lake will be dug 25 feet deep to provide the fill dirt necessary to raise the remaining land high enough to bury coffins.

Mfore than 40 years ago, when Richard (Dick) Snyder was just a young man, he never dreamed that one day he'd be the owner of a concrete burial vault company. He had planned to be a farmer like his father. As a matter of act, he worked for his father, but at the time farming wasn't a very

lucrative career. "My father paid me weekly, very weakly," puns Dick, with a laugh, "I just had to get

out and find a job to make more money." A friend of his had already been working at Superior Vault in Cooksville and had told him the company was looking for workers. So, one cold day in January, Dick went to the plant and talked to one of the partners, who said he couldn't hire anyone without the approval of the other partner. Discouraged, Dick returned home and continued to farm and look for other employment when he could. When he saw his friend two months later, he was asked, "Did you ever go to Superior Vault? They are still looking for workers."

Dick decided he'd try again, and this time met the other partner, Kenneth Hansford, Jr., who was ready for him to start work the next day. Not surprisingly, Hansford became a mentor to his young hire, who learned the business from beginning to end from him. Dick worked up through the levels of responsibility and managed the company for

Hansford for 20 years. "Ken became a good friend to me," he says, "and I'm very grateful that he had enough confidence in me to sell me his business." (In 1990, Dick bought the company.)

Doric & Eagle Franchisee The original vault plant in Cooksville, incorporated in 1954, was more or less a "barn" about 40 ft X 100 ft. The plant was moved to its current location in Mississauga in 1969, increasing its storage and manufacturing plant size to about 13,000 sq ft. Vault production is done inside the plant all year 'round.

Mississauga, a fast-growing city, provides a good business climate with the potential for solid growth. At a diverse population of 695,000, it is the sixth largest city in Canada and is growing by approximately 14,000 people a year. Of the 49,000 businesses in the immediate area, there are only two burial vault companies.

, Superior Vault's manufacturing staff (from left): Wendy Katarincic (office manager); Doug (plant manager); Brent, Irving, Jeff (Dick's oldest son), Jason (Dick's youngest son), and Dick Snyder.

Page 13: Bulletin 2006 August

How many vault manufacturing plants have an office cat? Wendy reports that

there was a problem with mice this past winter, and after trying all available

traps and still having mice run across the floor in front of her desk while she

was sitting there, Dick let her get a cat. The cat was rescued from a vet clinic

and stays at the plant 24/7. Wendy and her children come in every weekend to

check on her and play with her. (Wendy is happy to say she's not yet seen

another mouse!)

Superior Vault's storage and manufacturing plant capacity is about 13,000 sq ft in size. Because it has the extra space and the fact that Mississauga borders on Lake Ontario, vault production is done inside the plant all year.

August 2006 NCBVA BULLETIN 13

Vault production (not considered sealed vaults) at Superior in the '60s averaged about 600 – 700 concrete vaults and grave liners a year. Ken Hansford got an Eagle franchise in the mid-70s, and Superior began making sealed vaults. Dick still remembers working with some early vault products, such as an asphalt/concrete combination. "Those were mean vaults to pour," he says. Some of the bigger vault operations could manufacture these in one day, but those vaults took us two days to pour."

After he bought the company, Dick also obtained a Doric franchise to round out his product line for his customers in the community. In the '90s, vault production increased to about 4,000 a year, and stejadily grew to the nearly 5,000 of today.

While Superior does manufacture cremation vaults, it does not perform cremations. In Canada, one has to own cemetery property in order to have a crematorium.

Solid Service: PR Efforts with Funeral Directors Burial vaults are not required in Canada, and Dick says he works with area funeral directors to constantly promote the products of the burial vault industry. "Mississauga has a diversified ethnic community, and ethnic communities tend to be very traditional. What we consider 'traditional' funerals are in the majority," he explains, "but that doesn't always mean a concrete burial vault is in the picture. Our challenge is to help the funeral directors be able to gently promote to the customer the benefits of a concrete burial vault to help them understand that a vault is necessary to protect the deceased and the casket, which is usually a sizeable investment."

There are other challenges, too, such as the rise in cremations. Instead of complaining about this trend, however, Dick makes sure that Superior Vault produces cremation urn vaults and promotes their use to the funeral directors, too.

Lending a Hand While Superior Vault wasn't originally a family business, Dick is pleased that his sons are working with him. His oldest son Jeff is the lead hand and his youngest son Eric makes deliveries. (Dick and his wife Marion—an avid golfer also have a daughter, Sandi, who is a stay-at-home-mother of four.) In addition to his sons, his office manager, Wendy Katarincic, his plant manager, Doug, and himself, Superior Vault employs six people in manufacturing (one is a painter) and seven drivers.

With the time he spends on the job, it seems that Dick must thrive on the special characteristics of the deathcare industry. "No two days are ever alike," he says. "You must go to different cemeteries and other locations. There's usually also a time factor. ItIeems that vaults are always needed in a hurry. Our business is a seven-day-a-week business, and it's a regular thing for me to put in 10-hour-plus days."

Outside of the company's membership in the NCBVA, which he has maintaW.ed since 1988, Dick says he has little time to be a member of local service organizations, but is always ready to help them when needs arise. "First and foremost, we're here to serve the community," he says. "If anyone needs help, we try to meet their needs, such as using our trucks to help the Lions or some other service agency." Helping others and providing good service is the hallmark of Superior Vault, thanks to Dick Snyder's guiding hand.

TSA Partners With Funeral Homes To Assist Airline Passengers Transporting Human Remains As a result of a new policy, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has begun a program to partner with funeral homes throughout the country to better accommodate passengers transporting remains via air travel.

The new procedure affects passengers attempting to transport a crematory container on airplanes as carry-on baggage. Passengers are still allowed to carry-on a crematory container, but the container must first pass through the x-ray machine. If the container is made of a material that generates an opaque image and prevents the security screener from clearly being able to see what is inside, then the container will not be allowed through the security checkpoint. In respect to the deceased, under no circumstances will a screener open the container even if the passenger requests that this be done. Documentation from the funeral home is no longer sufficient to carry a crematory container through security and onto a plane.

To ensure that a TSA screener can successfully x-ray the crematory container's contents, the TSA recommends that remains be transported in containers constructed of lightweight materials such as cardboard, plastic, or wood.

TSA says it realizes that containers made of these materials may not be desirable as the container used to permanently house the remains of a passenger's loved ones; however, it can be used as a temporary container to transport the remains to their final destination. Using such a solution, passengers are ultimately faced with the dilemma of how to transfer the remains from the temporary container to the permanent container.

The TSA Solution The solution proposed by TSA is that funeral homes form a voluntary partnership with TSA and agree to offer a complimentary "Remains Transfer Service" at no charge to the traveler. This allows the passenger to obtain a temporary "security friendly" container for transporting the remains via air travel and in addition purchase a permanent container that can be made of any material they desire. Once the passenger reaches his final destination he can contact his local "TSA Funeral Home Partner" and have the remains transferred free of charge.

As partners, funeral homes will be listed on the TSA Web site with a link to their Web site. Partners will also be able to post the TSA Web site link on their Web site and advertise themselves as a TSA Partner.

EPA/Cana Project is National Reference The Cremation Association of North America's (CANA) contribution to the development of accurate and reliable environmental data has been acknowledged by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA). CANA is cited as the reference by the US EPA for human cremation statistics for the United States. Also, the joint test project performed and co-financed by CANA and the US EPA is now the national reference for mercury and other pollutants from human crematories ("EPA National Emissions Inventory").

FIRST CLASS Address Correction Service Requested

Tngard Presents New Fast-Loading Urns Trigard's new Earthstone Urns feature an exclusive screw top lid that allows the Funeral Director to load ashes in seconds, and allows families to scatter ashes conveniently.

Conventional cultured marble urns have small openings, while the Earthstone Urn has an opening of five inches. The construction of the Earthstone Urn requires many steps. First the molds are poured, and then allowed to cure. After the castings are released from the molds, they are then sanded and filled, and then re-sanded to remove minor imperfections until a perfect surface is achieved. Finally, its custom finishing process allows the look and feel of natural marble at half the cost. It is available in Midnight Onyx and Grand Canyon.

Bronze Medalist to Appear at NFDA Convention Dwight Stones, two-time Olympic bronze medalist in track and field, will once again join

Trigard in "Raising the Bar" at the NFDA National Convention in Philadelphia, October 15th — 18th. Stones was a hit when he appeared with Trigard at the ICFA Convention in Las Vegas earlier this year. Stones has literally raised the bar and set the standards for the track and field world. He has won 19 National Champion-ship titles, held the world high jump record 10 times and the American record 13 times. As 2006 Winter Olympics Commentator, Stones will be celebrating his 29th anniversary in television and his 10th Olympic Games participation.
