and FIRST + LAST NAME in any absentee notification. The school will contact parents of students who are away without an explanation. Following any absence, a note in the Communication Book / Planner should be sent to the teacher. For any absence over a THREE DAYS a Doctor’s Certificate is needed. A note in the Communication Book / Planner is required for permission to leave the school property during school hours.

REMEMBER: We have a ‘No Hat No Play’ policy and so, please make sure your daughter has her sport hat with her every day or leaves it at school. Years 4 to 6 students have a School Planner and so it is important that you read the information and policies in the front. Please support us with this, as the policies are clear and are important for the school and for the girls. Reception to Yr 3 students will bring home a copy of the Uniform Policy for you to keep. We ask that students only wear sport uniform on the days that it is required. The rules apply equally to everyone. If there is a valid reason, then please supply a note in the Communication Book / Planner. Black or Navy ribbons only and shoulder length hair must be tied back.

PARKING: Parking and school drop off and pick-ups are always a problem! Remember that the restricted area outside of the Barnard Street gate is a KISS AND DROP ZONE - The driver may not leave the car. After school,

teachers will bring your children to you at your car. Please be considerate of the neighbours and DO NOT pull up in front of driveways, including our own. Inspectors are always around at the beginning of the year and the fines are expensive! If you want to come in to the school, you must not park there during the restricted hours. This is fair for all parents and we ask that you respect this rule.

We wish you all a smooth transition back to school routines and the 2017 school year, as we prepare for exciting learning experiences, new challenges, new

friendships and new adventures.

Primary Newsfrom Ms. Cate O’Leary

Primary School Coordinator

“There are no limits to the possibilities that lie within you.”

Adele Basheer

We warmly welcome all our students and families, old and new to our 2017 school year. We hope your

learning journey with us with will be long and rewarding. I cannot speak too highly of our Primary staff. They have spent many hours already planning, setting up interesting learning environments and finding out more about the child entrusted in their care. They are passionate, knowledgeable, enthusiastic people who keep abreast of current trends and have the best interests of the girls at the heart.

We welcome back Mrs Tes Rodrigues who will this year be working in the Year 1 Class on a Thursday and Friday. We are also very pleased to welcome Mrs Francine Saint as the Year 2 teacher. She is very familiar with our school’s philosophy and pastoral care of our students and has relief taught here on numerous occasions. We know you will make them very welcome too.

PARENT ENGAGEMENT: Thank you to the many parents who joined us for Morning Tea yesterday. We appreciated the ‘old parents’ welcoming our new families.

NOTICES: at the beginning of every year there are always many notices that need to be signed. Please check with your daughter and return all notes signed, promptly.

CURRICULUM: A common curriculum thread in all classes will be their first Health Unit. All teachers will be explicitly teaching a unit on Bullying and identifying the differences between bullying and friendship issues. The program sits within a person centered approach in terms of active listening, empathy, the importance of ‘self ’ and the responsibility of acting on decisions. Developing resilience and Cyber Bullying will also be covered.

UNIFORM: Students are reminded that the correct wearing of the uniform is a pre-requisite for attendance. Any student who is unable to wear the correct uniform should have a note of explanation from the parent in her Communication Book

/ Planner, and this is to be shown to her class teacher. All clothing and effects should be clearly labelled with the student’s name.

ATTENDANCE: Good attendance at school is paramount to success. Any absence of 5 days per term is considered chronic absenteeism unless a medical condition prevents them from attending school. It also sets good habits for the future and an attitude that school is important. If a student is absent from school through sickness or any other reason, parents are asked to notify the school office (8267 3818) before 9.00am. There is a voicemail should you call this number outside school hours, a mobile number you can SMS (0429 558 017) and also a dedicated Absentee Email: [email protected]. PLEASE ENSURE you include your daughter’s CLASS

Parents & FriendsWelcome back to school for 2017. On behalf of the

P&F Committee, we hope that you all had a lovely Christmas and New Year break, and that everybody is refreshed and looking forward to the year ahead. The P&F executive is comprised of Michelle Hogan and Jo Duffy as Co-Presidents, Maria Lappas as Vice President and Kate Jensen as Secretary and we look forward to meeting you throughout the year. We thank all the members of the P&F committee who help throughout the year at our events to continue to make St. Dominic’s such a great community to be a part of. We would like to welcome any new families to the school and the old scholars who are returning with daughters, as well as any families who are continuing at the school. We invite you to be part of the P&F committee and attend our meetings and assist us throughout the year.

Family Mass: We are beginning to prepare for our first community event this year, the Family Mass, on Sunday 12th February. The P&F provide morning tea, as well as sell ice blocks, soft drinks and a sausage sizzle after the mass. This is a great opportunity for new families to meet and join our school community and for others to catch up again. Your help on the day would be much appreciated. We require assistance with preparing, serving or cleaning up. We kindly ask that you sign up online at http://signup.com/go/C3hjzc or indicate on your RSVP (enclosed) if you are able to help out.

Parent-Teacher Information NightsWe will also attend your daughters’ Parent Information Night over the next few weeks to provide you with more details on the P&F activities planned for 2017. At these sessions you will be given a copy of the Events for 2017 brochure to assist your family in planning for the school’s social events. Please keep the guide as your reference throughout the year.As the year progresses we will ask for your help via the Bulletin prior to the events. In addition, you can leave your name with your daughter’s class teacher or the front office, accompanied by your offer of help or please feel free to contact us directly via our emails: Michelle: [email protected]: [email protected]

We appreciate any assistance that you can offer and we thank you in advance. We understand that time is valuable but your help contributes to help make our school a better place for all of our daughters. We also look forward to seeing new and existing parents at the P&F meetings which are held once a term in the evening. We look forward to meeting you at the upcoming parent meetings and Family Mass Michelle Hogan, Jo Duffy, Maria Lappas & Kate Jensen

for the Parents & Friends’ Committee

Why is it essential that parents attend the Information evenings?

You have entrusted your daughter’s education to teachers who will have a major influence on her education and well-being. You need to know who they are and their expectations. You will be helped by understanding the policies which directly affect your daughter’s learning especially the Academic Honesty Policy and the Assessment Policy.

Each of the Year levels has in addition a special program related to the specific needs of that group. In Year 12 that will be assistance from an educational Psychologist. In Year 11 that will include some attention to the research Project. In Year 10 there will be follow up in the areas of the MYP Personal Project. In Year 9 the agenda will include high quality assistance for parents with the world. In year 8 there will be many important aspects re the day to day world of her learning and well being.
