Jesus’ answer calls attention to the fact that the common currency of the time was Roman and so had Caesar’s image stamped on it. Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, Jesus says, and give to God what is God’s. The image of Caesar on the coin is an indication that the money is Caesar’s. But the point of Jesus’ line is also that each one of us is God’s because each of us bears stamped in his soul the image of God. It is an honor and a glory to us, each one of us without exception that we are in the image of God. But it is also an awesome responsibility. When the face of a body is disfigured by self-indulgence in food or drinking or smoking, when the face of a soul is bent by envy or hatred or narcissistic possessiveness, the image of God in that person is warped. When others look at the face of that person, they will see only a distortion of God’s image. And so our sins ought to grieve us. Who wants to be a person whose soul shows a distorted image of God? But the same line of Christ’s that leads to such grief also gives the consolation for it. Just as Caesar’s money belongs to Caesar, so we belong to God. We are his own. The God who made us in his image will not leave us in our sins. Through the redemption of Christ, God will make his image lovely in each one of us. That is why Scripture says (Rm.8:29, I Jn 3:2) that when Christ comes again, each one of the faithful will be found in the image of Christ. We wait in hope for that time. Sunday of Ordinary Time - A

The Fort Detrick Holy Family Catholic Community

The Image In the Gospel reading, the Pharisees are trying to trap Jesus into saying something that can be construed as sedition against the Romans. When the face of a body is disfigured by self-indulgence in food or drinking or smoking, when the face of a soul is bent by envy or hatred or narcissistic possessiveness, the

image of God in that person is warped.

I AM GLAD YOU ASKED!

(Send all your questions to: [email protected] )

Q. Questions for your reflection on today’s readings:

First Reading

Isaiah 45:1, 4-6

1. Cyrus, who was a Gentile, permitted the Israelites to return from captivity in Babylon to their

homeland. Who are the people in the last hundred and fifty years who have broken down the walls of

prejudice and freed oppressed peoples? Were they all Christian? Do you think God chose them? Has God

ever used you? If so, were you aware of it?

2. The God of one people (Israelites) is seen doing marvelous deeds through another people (Cyrus’s

people). What would you conclude from this statement? Is the last line of the reading, “I am the Lord,

there is no other,” an explanation?

Second Reading

1 Thessalonians 1:1-5b

1. What do the following do for your reception of the word: presence of the Holy Spirit; people living the

gospel with much conviction? Compare and contrast: receiving the word as way of life with receiving the

word as a code of conduct.

2. St. Paul says, “For our gospel did not come to you in word alone, but also in power and in the Holy

Spirit and with much conviction.” Discuss Pope Francis’ statement on June 9, 2014 concerning that idea:

The Spirit of truth and charity reminds us of all that Christ has said, makes us enter more fully into the

sense of his words ... The Holy Spirit gives us ... fraternal dialogue and prophecy, helping us to speak with

friendship, with tenderness, as humble and docile channels, for the word of God.

.

Gospel

Matthew 22:15-21

1. In this Gospel, are the Pharisees more interested in taxes or in undermining Jesus’ influence? Since the

universe and everything in it is made in God’s image, what does belong to God? Are you a caretaker of

the earth?

2. Do God’s and Caesar’s worlds have to be separated? What would it look like if they were joined

together?

TITHES AND OFFERINGS ENVELOPE: Chapel parishioners have the option of having their tithes and offerings

tracked for tax deduction purposes. Please ask for an envelope when giving and make sure that you fill out the

information completely. For calendar year 2013, we are only able to give you the total for October, November, and

December. However, if you would still like for us to give you a statement for all of 2013, please bring in the previous

months’ processed checks. Thank you for choosing the Chapel as your place of worship! ~ Chaplain To.

International Military Pilgrimage to Lourdes

Very soon, the Archbishop will send you a letter about the International Military

Pilgrimage (PMI) to Lourdes, to encourage your support and participation, which will

also published on the special website for the same pilgrimage.

However, he does wish to avoid any confusion about this pilgrimage sponsored only by

the AMS and the Knights of Columbus. Should you receive any request to solicit

volunteers, funds, or priests on the part of the North American Lourdes Volunteers

(NALV), please refuse to do so and inform the Archbishop immediately of the request.

This group has repeatedly failed to co-operate with the AMS, has embarrassed the

image of the United States among the organizers of the PMI, and, in general, has

persisted in employing and sponsoring one model of Lourdes visit—theirs.

Last year, the Archbishop did obtain a grant for the NALV to help the AMS bring

wounded warriors on the pilgrimage. The collaboration was non-existent, and he has

been forced to abandon any similar attempts in the future. The Knights have been able

to draw on the long experience of the Knights of Malta, in addition to the “trial run” last

year. They are already far along in their preparations for this year’s PMI.
